The first paper covers the integrated resilient network design problem under transportation cost un-certainty. The focus is on the integration of strategic, tactical, and operational resilience decisions, as well as the influence of the ability to predict disruptions in the short-term, and potential limitations of the operational decisions within capacity limits. The problem is modeled as a two-stage stochastic program. In addition, a problem-specific Benders decomposition algorithm is developed with a non-standard split of decision variables to solve particularly large problem instances. The second paper focuses on the data-driven optimization of the operational inventory replenishment decision under transportation cost uncertainty. The problem is presented as a multi-stage stochastic program. To solve the problem, a cost-focused machine learning framework is proposed that uses the replenishment decisions under perfect information to train a decision tree that then learns a cost-optimal replenishment policy. The third paper evaluates the influence of product characteristics by considering the multi-product two-echelon resilient network design problem under transportation cost uncertainty. Both different product characteristics and the dependency of considering multiple products are analyzed. The fourth paper outlines a seven-step framework that covers the end-to-end steps a decision maker needs to follow to increase their supply chain resilience. The framework guides decision makers through the process from outlining clear resilience objectives to monitoring overall and enduring success. In addition, problem specifics and characteristics for the network design problem under waterborne disruptions are outlined to facilitate future research.}, subject = {Operations Research}, language = {en} } @phdthesis{Schwegler2026, author = {Schwegler, Pia Maria}, title = {Psychotherapists' readiness and professional quality of life in treating traumatized refugees}, doi = {10.17904/ku.opus-1045}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:bvb:824-opus4-10459}, school = {Katholische Universit{\"a}t Eichst{\"a}tt-Ingolstadt}, pages = {VII, 107 Seiten : Diagramme}, year = {2026}, abstract = {Approximately 123.2 million people are currently forcibly displaced worldwide, with many seeking protection in Germany. Traumatic experiences, displacement, and post-migratory stressors often lead to psychological distress and mental health disorders among this vulnerable population. Psychotherapeutic approaches, such as cognitive behavioral therapy and traumaspecific interventions, have proven effective in reducing symptoms of psychological distress among refugees. However, despite high need, few receive adequate care. This is in part due to structural and political barriers, limited access to Germany's healthcare system, and psychotherapists' attitudes toward treating refugees. The present dissertation consists of three publications exploring the latter factor, focusing on therapists' treatment readiness, expected therapeutic outcomes, previous work experience, and professional quality of life as potential obstacles to care. By examining these potential obstacles, this dissertation aims to identify opportunities for enhancing awareness of personal reservations and doubts concerning the treatment of refugee patients among mental health professionals, and to offer a revised perspective on the demands associated with this work. The first publication analyzed the readiness of German psychotherapists to treat refugees, focusing on how patients' countries of origin affect therapists' readiness to offer treatment as well as therapists' expectations of treatment success. The study employed six case vignettes that varied by patients' gender and country of origin (Syria, Ukraine, Germany). One of these vignettes was randomly presented to a total of n = 623 licensed psychotherapists and n = 218 psychotherapists in training. The participants rated their readiness to treat the presented patient and the anticipated treatment outcome. The results indicate significantly lower readiness to treat refugees than non-refugees. No significant differences were found between Syrian and Ukrainian patients. Regarding expected treatment outcome, therapists anticipated lower success rates for refugees. The vignettes with the Syrian patients received the lowest ratings. The second publication examined whether professional quality of life (ProQOL) and prior experience working with refugees affect therapists' readiness to provide treatment to this group. ProQOL includes the following three aspects: Burnout, compassion satisfaction, and secondary traumatic stress. Among the 821 licensed psychotherapists and psychotherapists in training surveyed, moderate levels of compassion satisfaction and low levels of burnout and secondary traumatic stress were reported, indicating low overall strain. Compassion satisfaction was positively and secondary traumatic stress negatively correlated with readiness to treat. Incorporating the variable of patients' refugee background into the analysis negated the effect of secondary traumatic stress on treatment readiness, while the influence of compassion satisfaction remained unchanged. Therapists with prior experience in treating refugees reported higher compassion satisfaction, lower burnout scores, and greater readiness to provide care than those without such experience. However, ProQOL was not significantly correlated with readiness to treat refugees. The third publication examined the ProQOL of psychotherapists and child welfare workers who worked with unaccompanied young refugees (UYR), as well as potential influencing factors. The comparison revealed that child welfare workers experience significantly higher levels of strain than psychotherapists. Psychotherapists with prior experience of treating refugees reported greater compassion satisfaction. Regression analysis showed that a high number of PTSD cases in treatment was associated with increased secondary traumatic stress among psychotherapists. Additionally, trauma-specific training was linked to higher secondary traumatic stress levels in this group. No significant predictors of ProQOL were identified for child welfare workers. This dissertation contributes to the current state of research, as it addresses key barriers in the psychotherapeutic care of refugees. By examining psychotherapists' treatment readiness, expected treatment success, and professional quality of life, it reveals psychological factors that may impede refugees' access to care. The findings emphasize the critical need for trauma-specific training, both prior to and following licensure, highlighting its importance for access to qualified care for refugees independent of their countries of origin. Furthermore, the dissertation advocates for early exposure to refugee populations during clinical training. Having prior experience in this area enhances treatment readiness and compassion satisfaction, suggesting that early engagement may foster professional confidence and reduces therapeutic resistance. Adding further depth to this analysis, including child welfare workers working with UYR enriches the understanding of occupational stress and compassion satisfaction in the context of child welfare. By comparing psychotherapists and child welfare workers, this body of work identifies notable disparities in stress levels, thereby calling for more consistent and structured support across professional domains. In sum, this dissertation contributes to the academic discourse on refugees' mental health and offers practical recommendations for improving mental healthcare utilization by addressing therapists' characteristics such as ProQOL. To improve these characteristics one may discuss supervision, education or systemic reforms as implications of this dissertation.}, subject = {Ukrainischer Fl{\"u}chtling}, language = {en} } @phdthesis{Mehl2026, author = {Mehl, Martin Johannes}, title = {Today's challenges for the modern Welfare State}, doi = {10.17904/ku.opus-1044}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:bvb:824-opus4-10445}, school = {Katholische Universit{\"a}t Eichst{\"a}tt-Ingolstadt}, pages = {v, 111 Seiten : Diagramme, Karten}, year = {2026}, abstract = {Understanding redistribution preferences in diverse societies is central to current debates on the European welfare state, yet empirical evidence remains incomplete. This dissertation contributes new evidence towards closing this gap. All three papers build on the large-scale comparative dataset of the ESS. In the first two papers OECD and Eurostat statistics are used to measure immigration. In addition asylum inflows are tracked by means of data from the European Observation Network for Territorial Development and Cohesion (ESPON) in the second paper. In the third paper detailed household income information from the European Union Statistics on Income and Living Conditions (EU-SILC) is used to enable a microsimulation of transfers required to eliminate poverty under a EU-wide Social Benefit Scheme. Combined, these data allow for both the replication of earlier findings (as in the first paper) and the development of new identification strategies (as in the second and third papers). Across the three studies, three consistent findings emerge. First, material self-interest remains stable over the three research papers: higher income is in general associated with less support for redistribution. Second, the Progressive's Dilemma is not robust across time or space as the effect of heterogeneity is context-sensitive. Thus, short-run refugee inflows do not automatically undermine solidarity. In contrast, support for redistribution declines in regions less exposed to refugee inflows after 2015, while remaining largely unchanged in regions hosting large numbers of refugees, a robust pattern that runs counter to the Progressive's Dilemma hypothesis. Third, when redistribution is scaled to the European level, support depends crucially on incidence: individuals in net payer countries, and those who fear lower domestic benefits from EU social policies, are less supportive. Generally, these results suggest that while self-interest is a stable driver, diversity and ethnic heterogeneity are far more complex and indeed context-dependent. This dissertation contributes to the literature in three ways. First, it demonstrates the importance of replication and extension tests that vary along temporal, spatial, and measurement dimensions. The current literature should consider how its empirical basis evolves over time and space. Also, the second paper provides new causal evidence on how asylum inflows shape redistribution preferences by exploiting the so-called "asylum crisis" as a natural experiment that generated exogenous variation in regional ethnic heterogeneity rates. Third, it highlights the role of fiscal incidence in shaping support for cross-national redistribution schemes. Taken together, these contributions advance our understanding of how solidarity, self-interest, and ethnic heterogeneity interact in modern European welfare states. The first paper features an extension test of David Rueda's (2018) study "Food Comes First, Then Morals: Redistribution Preferences, Parochial Altruism, and Immigration in Western Europe". It analyzes how household size, an extended time horizon, and the inclusion of Eastern European countries affect the original findings. Building on these results, the second essay—joint work with Jakob Sch¨auble and J¨org Althammer—exploits the European refugee crisis of 2015/16 as a quasi-natural experiment to study the causal effects of increased ethnic heterogeneity on natives' willingness to support welfare programs. The third essay analyzes how support for a European-wide minimum income scheme differs between individuals living in net payer versus net recipient countries. While much research on Latin American extractivism centres on environmental impacts or organised resistance, this study places the voices of women miners at the centre of analysis. Women miners traditionally play an indispensable role in gold mining, either as alluvial artisanal miners in the ancient form of the barequeo or as scrap workers, known as chatarreras. These women operate in a paradoxical space: as both participants in and disproportionately affected by neoliberal extractive economies, their labour is essential yet criminalised, while their presence is visible yet institutionally and academically ignored. Framed by a revised feminist empowerment (RFE) framework developed through Latin American feminist theory, this research draws on feminist phenomenology, positionality, and qualitative fieldwork, including semi-structured group interviews in the regions of Andes, Buritic{\´a}, Zaragoza, Toledo, and Segovia, carried out between April 2022 and February 2024. It demonstrates that empowerment is not a static outcome, but a circular, relational, and negotiated process shaped by patriarchal power relations, critical consciousness, intersectionality, and multiple forms of violence, including economic, territorial, and sexual violence. ASGM, while a source of subsistence and cultural identity, also exposes the miner women, the Mineras, to mercury pollution, precarious labour, and systemic invisibilisation. Formalisation efforts and extractivist policies place the Mineras in a state of invisibility and exclusion rather than providing solutions. Yet, through collective organising, sisterhood, ancestral practices, and community-based alternatives, these women envision and actively create post-extractivist feminist visions grounded in dignity and community care. 2.921 m³. However, the acquisition of EFL speaking skills is a process which takes time (B{\"o}ttger, 2016) and is challenging for young learners in educational settings, where there is limited time in the curriculum for English teaching each week (Read, 2020). Learning to speak is a complex process (Levelt, 1989). Therefore, learners need support for understanding and production (Cameron, 2001). They need to be offered ample opportunities to speak in different situations (B{\"o}ttger, 2016). This research project explored whether drama based on picturebooks had the potential to help mixed-ability learners to develop their speaking skills and in what ways. Picturebooks were chosen because they are recommended for use in the primary classroom (ZSL Zentrum f{\"u}r Schulqualit{\"a}t und Lehrerbildung) and are often used in English lessons (B{\"o}ttger, 2020). The intervention was tested with 9-10-year-old learners in the final year of primary school in four different schools. A mixed method approach was taken and the data was merged to draw inferences about the development of learners' speaking skills (Creswell, 2022). Quantitative data was collected from pre and post speaking assessments, structured classroom observations and learner self-assessments. The data was analysed using SPSS. Qualitative data was collected from unstructured classroom observations recorded in a research journal. This were analysed with MAXQDA. The analysis of the data indicated that the intervention had the potential to help mixed-ability learners to develop their oral skills. Linguistic skills developed because learners' use of vocabulary in speech broadened, and learners used more English after the intervention, including more chunks of language. Assessment of cognitive skills showed some evidence of the development of thinking skills, planning simple speech, the ability to pay attention, concentrate, and memorize repeated phrases and vocabulary. However, very little evidence of self-repair of utterances was found and no development could be confirmed in learners' phonology or pronunciation skills. All the learners who participated in the intervention established basic social contact.
