The narrative structure of the walking tours connects different tourist sites, heritage sites, and sites of memorials together and employs diverse practices of narration, historical imagination, and walkability as an epistemic practice to produce knowledge. This predesigned narrative material, however, is not directly absorbed as knowledge but is used by participants for their own process of sense and meaning-making that occurs together with walking. With the epistemic focus on walking, the thesis investigates the under-studied sense-making processes from the members' perspective. This is achieved by an ethnographic participant observation study of walking tours in the cities of Delhi and Berlin. The thesis addresses a wider objective through a methodological and reflexive practice of thick comparison within urban ethnography to develop and create a praxeological mode to understand how comparison within transnational research can be initiated and practiced beyond pre-defined quantified parameters. The idea is to keep practices at the center and, through thick comparison, produce comparability as opposed to following and adding to the already existing normative and hegemonic national-based epistemologies. The thesis, with a post-colonial approach, attempts to show how the comparison between Delhi and Berlin can reveal urban nuances and practices that add to a thicker and more diverse understanding of urban theories and concepts while rendering them ever-evolving. In doing so, the project makes a case for thick comparison as a mode of research expanding it beyond a method and engages with the post-colonial discourse through empirically praxeologising the object of research. The central notion of my dissertation is that sense-making and knowledge production during walking are always indexical, temporal, performative, and situated in place and, therefore, can be best studied through the analytical concept of practicing place.}, subject = {Dehli}, language = {en} } @phdthesis{Kasparik2025, author = {Kasparik, Barbara}, title = {Evidence-based trauma treatment for unaccompanied young refugees}, doi = {10.17904/ku.opus-991}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:bvb:824-opus4-9917}, school = {Katholische Universit{\"a}t Eichst{\"a}tt-Ingolstadt}, pages = {144 Seiten : Diagramme}, year = {2025}, abstract = {Unaccompanied young refugees (UYRs) encounter a multitude of stressors prior to, during and after their flight. Consequently, they demonstrate elevated levels of psychological distress and are vulnerable to the development of mental disorders, particularly post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). A treatment manual that has a broad evidence base and is also suitable for the treatment of young unaccompanied refugees, is trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy, which was established by Cohen, Mannarino and Deblinger (2006, 2017). Despite the existence of empirically validated treatment modalities for pediatric PTSD, UYRs frequently fail to receive sufficient psychotherapeutic care. Consequently, there is a necessity to identify factors that can lead to successful psychotherapeutic treatment on the patients, psychotherapists, and the healthcare system level. The present dissertation sought to explore four main questions. The initial publication is a metaanalysis. We found substantial improvement in PTSD symptoms, depression, anxiety, and grief for young patients who participated in TF-CBT, with favorable post-treatment outcomes when compared to all control conditions. The second publication posits that a web-based training approach for TF-CBT results in substantial knowledge gain among its users and is an accessible training method of training for mental health care professionals. The third publication employed qualitative analysis to ascertain the factors that facilitate effective psychotherapy with UYRs, as perceived by psychotherapists. The identified factors encompass the presence of structured training programs, the availability of supportive caregivers and facilities, and the availability of skilled interpreters. At the patient level, the fourth publication identified age, length of stay in the host-country, and the severity of PTSD symptoms as significant correlates with the intention to utilize psychotherapeutic care. The severity of PTSD symptoms emerged as the sole significant predictor of the intention, and utilization was exclusively associated with the expressed intention. This dissertation underscores the need for continuous implementation and dissemination of knowledge among all levels of the actors involved in the process of psychotherapeutic care of UYRs. At the practitioner level, the ongoing provision of structured training in evidence-based manuals is imperative, as their efficacy in practice has been well-documented. Addressing individual barriers faced by patients and their caregivers, including self-stigma and a lack of knowledge about mental illness, through targeted interventions and educational initiatives is also essential. One way to effectively support SRL in CBLEs was shown to be metacognitive prompting, a form of support which aims at activating strategies that are not used spontaneously. Young learners in lower secondary schools were found to possess basic forms of metacognitive SRL skills, however, in CBLEs, they were observed to experience difficulties in using them. Aim and Method: To gain in-depth insights into the effects of metacognitive prompting in young learners, in the research in the present thesis, two empirical studies were conducted to explore young learners' prompted and unprompted SRL activities and the relation to recall and transfer learning performance. In the first study, prompted (n = 17) and unprompted (n = 16) 6th grade students were compared in their SRL activities by means of the think-aloud method during a 30-minutes learning session in the CBLE. Furthermore, process mining to analyze the sequential structure of the SRL activities and a recall knowledge test to assess learning performance were used. In the second study, 6th grade students received metacognitive prompts (n = 38) or no prompts (n = 34) to investigate their metacognitive SRL activities using self-reports and their online learning behavior during a three weeks learning period using trace data. Also, their recall and transfer learning performance was measured. Results: The results show that learning with metacognitive prompts, in the first study, lead to higher domain-general metacognitive SRL activities, and in the second study, to higher self-reported metacognitive SRL activities. The prompts did not yield significant differences in learning performance. However, in the second study, prior performance level was identified as a significant moderator influencing the interaction between the prompts and transfer learning performance. Conclusion: In the present research, adaptive metacognitive prompting was shown to be a promising tool to support young learners in their metacognitive SRL activities in an authentic CBLE. Future research is needed to more precisely understand young learners' needs for adaptive SRL support in CBLEs, focusing particularly on low achieving young learners. The present research highlights the developmental perspective of SRL in metacognitive prompting for young learners and draws conclusions in terms of prompt compliance and prompt design. Operating at the intersection of American cultural studies and game studies, it opposes formalist and static notions of space and place by emphasizing the processual, affect-based, and embodied aspects of practices of play. Through the metaphor of playing place, the project foregrounds the relational, spatially productive, and heterogenetic qualities of play ensembles. Its simultaneous critique of the anthropocentric subjectivity of classic theories of play on the one side and the neglect of game studies to think beyond docile and instrumental play on the other aims at an affirmative and yet critical perspective on forms of play and games as play partners. The resulting approach to the medialities of digital game play is dedicated to both exploring and questioning dominant spatialities and hegemonic forms of play in three case studies. A diverse range of recent titles is addressed as discursive cultural sites of ant/agonistic, extractivist, and mental spatialities produced and negotiated in digital game play. The project's three case-based chapters hence examine the racial connotations of the ghoul in the Fallout game series, neoliberal and colonial extractivisms of farming practices together with Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Conan Exiles, as well as counter-hegemonic practices of recent indie games in the context of mental health discourses. Die Dissertation untersucht die politische Interessenvertretung von Hochschulen und außeruniversit{\"a}ren Forschungsorganisationen und deren Verb{\"u}nden in Deutschland. Im Zentrum steht die Frage, inwieweit diese Institutionen strategische Kommunikation nutzen, um ihre Interessen gegen{\"u}ber der Politik zu vertreten. Wissenschaftslobbying wird hierbei als Teilbereich der strategischen Organisationskommunikation betrachtet, eingebettet in gesellschaftliche, organisationale und individuelle Handlungsebenen. Ein integratives theoretisches Konzept kombiniert kommunikationswissenschaftliche Ans{\"a}tze mit gesellschaftstheoretischen Perspektiven. Das daraus entwickelte Modell eines „Lobbying-Kreislaufes" beschreibt politische Interessenvertretung als zyklischen Prozess, der analytische Einordnung, strategische Entscheidung und operative Umsetzung umfasst. Empirisch basiert die Arbeit auf einer qualitativen Vorstudie mit 18 Leitfadengespr{\"a}chen sowie einer quantitativen Erhebung unter Kommunikationsverantwortlichen von 645 Wissenschaftseinrichtungen, von denen 100 Frageb{\"o}gen ausgewertet wurden. Die Ergebnisse zeigen ein heterogenes Bild: W{\"a}hrend wenige Institutionen als Lobbying-Aktive strategisch und professionell vorgehen, scheitern viele als Lobbying-Passive an organisatorischen H{\"u}rden. Die Mehrheit der Hochschulen und Forschungsorganisationen lehnt Lobbying offiziell ab, obwohl sie de facto eigene Interessen vertreten. Ein zentraler Befund ist, dass die Kommunikation mit der Politik oft allein der Einrichtungsleitung obliegt, w{\"a}hrend Kommunikationsverantwortliche kaum eingebunden werden. Zudem mangelt es an strategischer Planung und interner Abstimmung. Auch bei den Hochschulverb{\"u}nden zeigt sich ein uneinheitliches Bild: Nur ein Viertel der Befragten stuft ihren wichtigsten Verbund als Lobbyverband ein, und die Mehrzahl ist unzufrieden mit dessen Arbeit. However, the complex interactions between environmental factors and birch pollen production are not fully understood. This doctoral thesis aims to investigate the impacts of genetic, climatic, and other environmental drivers on pollen production across different birch species and climatic conditions in Europe. The research therefore gains major importance since climate change conditions are believed to alter the risk and severity of allergic diseases and may change conditions for reproduction in forest tree species. The major questions addressed in this PhD thesis are: 1. What are the pollen production estimates for Betula species? In other words, how many inflorescences and pollen are produced by distinct types of the tree species? 2. Is there a year-to-year variation in birch pollen production? 3. How do genetic and environmental factors influence birch pollen production at local and regional scales? The research presented in this thesis is based on three peer-reviewed publications that employed a multi-faceted approach to address the overarching research questions. The first study (Chapter 4) assessed pollen production in cloned individuals of weeping birch (Betula pendula) over three consecutive years (2019-2021) in a seed plantation in Germany, with catkin samples collected from 28 birch trees. The second study (Chapter 5) investigated pollen production of downy birch (Betula pubescens) along an altitudinal gradient of 522 meters in the European Alps during 2020 and 2021, with catkin samples collected from 17 birch individuals at nine different altitudinal locations. The third study (Chapter 6) evaluated the continental-scale impacts of meteorology (temperature, precipitation) and atmospheric gases (ozone, carbon dioxide) on downy birch pollen production across 37 International Phenological Gardens (IPGs) in Europe, with catkin samples collected over three consecutive years (2019-2021) and tree age was approximated by stem circumference. We adopted a standardized method to extract pollen from catkins and maintained methodological consistency across all three studies. For Chapter 4 and Chapter 5, environmental factors such as air temperature, air quality, and solar radiation were monitored at the study sites. For Chapter 6, high-resolution (0.1°) gridded meteorological data were obtained from the E-OBS dataset, and concentrations of O3, NO2 and CO2 were derived from Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) reanalysis. The major statistical analyses included non-parametric tests such as the Kruskal-Wallis test, Mann-Whitney U test, Spearman's correlation, and mean regression. Additionally, the research incorporated a distribution-free quantile regression method, where the quantiles of the response distribution (pollen production) were modeled directly. This allowed for assessing the impacts of factors such as temperature and O3 levels across different quantiles of the response variable. All statistical analyses were carried out using R versions 4.1.2, 4.2.2, and 4.3.2. We estimated mean pollen production for two birch species: 1.66 million pollen grains per catkin for B. pendula (Chapter 4) and between 0.4 and 8.3 million pollen grains per catkin for B. pubescens (Chapter 5 and Chapter 6). Moreover, significant annual fluctuations were noted in both pollen and catkin production. Our findings also include indication of masting behaviour in the selected birch trees (Chapter 4 and Chapter 5), suggesting that annual variations in pollen production could be influenced by masting, which may mask the effects of environmental factors such as temperature. At the seed plantation site, we observed that genetic variability in birch trees leads to increased variability in pollen production (Chapter 4). Consequently, to effectively investigate the effects of environmental factors, we employed a research design that minimized genetic variability among trees. This approach was applied in our study across Europe using IPG birches, which exhibit reduced genetic variability (Chapter 6). The results from studies in the European Alps (Chapter 5) and across Europe (Chapter 6) showed significant positive correlations between air temperature and pollen production in birch. In der Ambivalenztheoretischen Perspektive auf Inklusion (API) stehen Normen- und Anforderungskonflikte im Mittelpunkt, die unweigerlich auftreten, wenn Individuen in eine bildungsspezifische Umwelt einbezogen werden. Were they part of the resistance to the regime? What is the substantial historiographical contribution of a comparison between National Socialism and the last military dictatorship in Argentina? These are the questions which shape this dissertation. The Jehovah's Witnesses were the only Christian religious group which was banned and persecuted by the militaries in the 1970s. This research reconstructs their experiences and, most important, how they perceived them. In other words, it is the aim of this research to describe the Eigen-Sinn of Jehovah's Witnesses. Coined by Alf L{\"u}dtke to analyze the ambiguous behavior of the German working class during the first half of the XX century, Eigen-Sinn is a concept for understanding individual behaviors and actions in relation with power and domination. The NS Regime was a central element in the Eigen-Sinn of the Jehovah's Witnesses in Argentina in 1970s. For them, the hostile measures of the military regime was a revival of the persecution suffered by their coreligionists in Europe under the NS Regime. Based on this interpretation, the European experiences shaped the social behavior of the Jehovah's Witnesses in Argentina by providing them an interpretative framework which was central at the moment of facing the military regime. This parallel between the European and Argentinean experiences is specially relevant for the Argentinean historiography, where the discussion about the nature of the military regime is still open. Due to the atrocities committed by the Argentinean militaries, this dictatorship is categorized, by some scholars, among the genocides of the XX century. This research shares light in this open discussion by comparing the military regime in Argentina with the NS dictatorship not from a theoretical approach but from an empirical research about the historical experiences of Jehovah's Witnesses under both regimes.}, subject = {Zeugen Jehovas}, language = {en} } @phdthesis{Hellmann2024, author = {Hellmann, Sebastian}, title = {Modeling the complex relationship between task difficulty, accuracy, response time, and confidence}, doi = {10.17904/ku.opus-952}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:bvb:824-opus4-9527}, school = {Katholische Universit{\"a}t Eichst{\"a}tt-Ingolstadt}, pages = {VII, 247 Seiten : Illustrationen, Diagramme}, year = {2024}, abstract = {Confidence, a subjective evaluation about the correctness of one's own decision, is influenced by many aspects of the decision itself, for example the level of difficulty. Empirically, the time it takes to make a decision is also related to confidence, such that faster decisions are usually accompanied with higher confidence compared to slower decisions. The mathematical framework of sequential sampling models offers a way to formalize a unified theory of the complex relationship between task difficulty, response times, and confidence judgments. The three studies in this thesis utilized the sequential sampling framework to yield insight into the decision dynamics and computations that give rise to confidence judgments in perceptual decisions. In Study 1 and 2, a variety of dynamical confidence models are compared with respect to their fit to empirical data from experiments comprising different visual discrimination tasks with a difficulty manipulation. In Study 1, I formulated the dynamical weighted evidence and visibility (dynWEV) model and in Study 2, I refined the model to the dynamical visibility, time, and evidence model (dynaViTE) model. The dynaViTE model describes the decision process as a drift diffusion model. In addition, dynaViTE assumes a period of post-decisional accumulation of evidence and a parallel accumulation of visibility evidence, which accrues evidence about task difficulty. In dynaViTE, confidence is determined by a combination of decision evidence and visibility evidence in the form of a weighted sum, penalized by the duration of evidence accumulation. In Study 1, I compared different dynamical confidence models, which are based on either a race of accumulators or the drift diffusion model, on their fit to data from two experiments comprising different visual discrimination tasks with a difficulty manipulation. The newly proposed dynWEV model outperformed all competitors suggesting that confidence is not only determined by evidence about stimulus identity but is influenced by independent evidence about task difficulty, which is conveyed by choice-irrelevant stimulus features. Study 2 examined the role of the duration of evidence accumulation in the computation of confidence. Theoretically supported by a formal analysis of confidence in a Bayesian optimal observer model, I generalized the dynWEV model to include a penalization of the time it takes to accumulate evidence and form a decision in the computation of confidence, resulting in the dynaViTE model. The dynaViTE model is compared against three of its special cases that either ignore accumulation time, visibility evidence, or both accumulation time and visibility evidence in the computation of confidence. We used previously published empirical data from four experiments, three visual discrimination tasks with a difficulty manipulation, and one visual two-alternative forced choice task with a difficulty and a speed-accuracy manipulation. The results suggest that human observers indeed explicitly consider accumulation time when making confidence judgments. However, depending on the task at hand, either visibility accumulation or accumulation time may be less relevant in the formation of confidence, which suggests that some stimuli or experimental tasks leads to different strategies in confidence computations. The third study showcases the R package dynConfiR, which includes an implementation of several dynamical confidence models together with high-level functions for parameter estimation and prediction of response time distributions. The package offers an efficient and intuitive model fitting function, which simplifies the workflow for modeling studies with confidence and response time data to calling a few lines of code. Thus, the dynConfiR package provides useful tools for analyzing response time and confidence data across a variety of experiments. In sum, the dynaViTE model forms a computational model, which formalizes the relationship between task difficulty, choice, response time, and confidence judgment. The dynaViTE model extends previous theories of confidence by including the parallel assessment of independent evidence about task difficulty and the incorporation of accumulation time in the computation of confidence. The studies presented in this thesis deliver substantial evidence in supporting both features, the parallel accumulation of visibility and the incorporation of accumulation time in the computation of confidence. It is a response to the processes of de-placing, which are perhaps most visible in the properties of shame. De-placing is a key concept in this thesis, describing an (affective) inability to speak or be heard. A feminist analysis of shame outlines it as a mechanism of hegemonic patriarchal power dynamics, facilitating the placelessness of victims of sexualized violence. However, a feminist analysis of both shame and power also demands room for resistance. The possibilities of resistance are explored as processes of re-placing. This analysis is placed in the center of a (feminist) tension between disempowerment and empowerment, proposing a conceptual approach that embraces a productive tension in the \#MeToo movement. The \#MeToo movement constructs itself on the basis of autobiographical narratives; some as short as a Tweet and others as long as a memoir. Thus, this thesis explores the productive ambivalence between narratives of shame/de-placing and agency/re-placing through literary analysis. These readings focus on how \#MeToo literature negotiates narratives of shame and shame resistance - powerlessness and empowerment - through digital spheres, the courtroom, and the site of abuse. The autobiographical narratives that dynamically construct the \#MeToo movement dismantle the de-placing properties of shame in their collectivized demand to (agentically) be in place. Yet, these narratives reveal the limits of (affective) agency vis-{\`a}-vis the hegemonic patriarchal power dynamics they respond to. Neben kurzfristig auftretenden Ereignissen (z.B. Umweltkatastrophen) tragen auch die globalen Megatrends wie der digitale, demografische oder der Klimawandel zu einer Ver{\"a}nderung der Destinationsstrukturen bei. Dennoch zeigen empirische Studien, dass eine dauerhaft angelegte Anpassung bislang eher in den Hintergrund des strategischen Destinationsmanagements r{\"u}ckt und Probleme h{\"a}ufig in der Implementierung von Prozessen zu finden sind. Problematisch daran ist jedoch, dass eine strategische Anpassung h{\"a}ufig erst dann Dringlichkeit erlangt, wenn die Ver{\"a}nderungen bereits eingetreten oder unumkehrbar sind. Diese Ausgangssituation wird zus{\"a}tzlich dadurch versch{\"a}rft, dass Ver{\"a}nderungen nicht einzeln, sondern parallel zutage treten, deren Auswirkungen sich wechselseitig verst{\"a}rken k{\"o}nnen. Setzt man den Einfluss einer stetigen Dynamik voraus, so muss angenommen werden, dass sich auch die Anpassungserfordernisse in Destinationen kontinuierlich {\"u}ber die Zeit ver{\"a}ndern. Um die bestehenden Strukturen einer Destination an die Ver{\"a}nderungsdynamiken anzugleichen, bedarf es somit an Flexibilit{\"a}t, Lernbereitschaft und eines gewissen experimentellen Verst{\"a}ndnisses. Ein solcher Zustand der Reflexivit{\"a}t ist aber nur dann zu erreichen, wenn auch die Strukturen und Prozesse im Governance-System offen angelegt sind und eine laufende Abstimmung sowie kritische Reflexion von Entscheidungen erm{\"o}glichen. Adaptive Governance-Formen gelten demnach als wichtige Einflussparameter einer flexiblen Anpassung. Um die Problematik zur Gestaltung von Anpassungsprozessen tiefer zu erforschen, n{\"a}hert sich diese Dissertation aus Sicht der Adaptive Governance-Forschung an und versucht die zentralen Erkenntnisse auf die Destinationsforschung zur {\"u}bertragen. Im Fokus steht hierbei die Untersuchungsfrage: Welche Eigenschaften einer Adaptive Governance lassen sich im Destinationskontext identifizieren und inwieweit tragen sie dazu bei, den Prozess der Anpassung dauerhaft zu bew{\"a}ltigen? Mit der Beantwortung dieser Frage m{\"o}chte die Dissertation die Relevanz des Adaptive Governance Ansatzes f{\"u}r die Tourismusforschung untersuchen. Ziel ist es zu pr{\"u}fen, inwieweit das Konzept der Adaptive Governance zur Bewertung und Gestaltung von Anpassungsprozessen auf Destinationsebene geeignet ist. Die auf Grundlage der Literaturstudie ermittelten Bestimmungsfaktoren einer Adaptive Governance dienen aus empirischer Sicht als analytischer Rahmen zur Beschreibung der bestehenden Strukturen und Gestaltungsprozesse und unterst{\"u}tzen dabei, die destinationsspezifischen Anforderungen abzuleiten. F{\"u}r die Durchf{\"u}hrung der empirischen Untersuchung wurde die vergleichende Fallstudie als qualitativ-interpretative Forschungsmethode ausgew{\"a}hlt. Verschiedene Anpassungsprozesse im Untersuchungsraum Bayern bilden hierbei den Untersuchungsgegenstand. Das Untersuchungsdesign folgt einem zweistufigen Vorgehen: Erstens, diente eine explorative Vorstudie dem Ziel geeignete Untersuchungsf{\"a}lle zu identifizieren und relevante Anpassungsthemen in der Praxis bayerischer Destinationen zu ermitteln. In der zweiten Stufe erfolgte die Mehrfallstudie basierend auf den vier ausgew{\"a}hlten F{\"a}llen Fr{\"a}nkisches Seenland, Bad Hindelang, Chiemsee-Chiemgau und Fichtelgebirge. F{\"u}r die Auswertung der 31 qualitativen, leitfadengest{\"u}tzten Interviews wurde das Analyseverfahren GABEK® eingesetzt, die es erm{\"o}glicht, Einflussfaktoren und Kausalmechanismen zu identifizieren. Die Ergebnisdarstellung erfolgte sowohl Einzelfallspezifisch als auch fall{\"u}bergreifend. Die zentralen Untersuchungsergebnisse zeigen, dass die Funktion eines handlungsfeld{\"u}bergreifenden K{\"u}mmerers, der den Wandel aktiv begleitet sowie Aspekte des Lernens und Reflektierens eine große Rolle im Destinationsgeschehen Bayerns einnehmen. Jedoch mangelt es vielfach an Kontinuit{\"a}t und eines ad{\"a}quaten institutionellen Rahmens, solche Lernmechanismen zu unterst{\"u}tzen. Der Mehrwert zur Ber{\"u}cksichtigung der Adaptive Governance Prinzipien im vorherrschenden Destination Governance Verst{\"a}ndnis besteht also darin, dieses um ein st{\"a}rker reflexives Verst{\"a}ndnis zu erweitern und dadurch die Anpassungsf{\"a}higkeit einer Destinationsgemeinschaft dauerhaft zu st{\"a}rken. Analyzing 10,079 tokens from the International Corpus of English (ICE) and using mixed-effects logistic regression analysis, the study investigates whether the strength of processing factors and stylistic variables is correlated with Dynamic Model stages. Moreover, drawing on Hierarchical Configural Frequency Analysis (HCFA) and Large Number of Rare Events (LNRE) models, it tests Hoffmann's (2021) Dynamic Model Productivity hypothesis, which predicts that more advanced varieties should exhibit a higher productivity of constructional slots, while varieties at lower stages of evolution should rely more on a small set of prototypical fillers. The results are largely in line with Hoffmann's (2011) analysis of preposition placement, which found that Kenyan English is more strongly affected by processing constraints than British English, while stylistic variables have a weaker effect in the L2 variety. Even though processing constraints turn out to strongly affect the constructional choices of speakers of all varieties, less advanced varieties are more likely to use pied-piped WH-interrogative constructions with adjunct PPs, which suggests that varieties at lower stages of evolution have a stronger preference for constructions that facilitate parsing in contexts in which the processing load is not maximal. Furthermore, in line with the frequent claim that New Englishes are characterized by a lack of register distinctions, the strength of stylistic variables turns out to be correlated with Dynamic Model stages. While Phases IV and V have formal pied-piped and informal stranded finite WH-relative clause constructions, Phase III only has the pied-piped variant. This effect can be attributed to two factors: the formal input that is typical of postcolonial Englishes, and the processing complexity of stranding constructions. That preposition stranding is less deeply entrenched in varieties at lower stages is also indicated by the fact that the slots of stranding constructions show a higher productivity in varieties at higher developmental stages, whereas less advanced varieties rely more on entrenched verb-preposition strings (e.g. refer to) and WH + P combinations (e.g. what…about). At the same time, earlier Dynamic Model phases exhibit more variation in the preposition slot of pied-piped finite WH-relative clause constructions, which can be attributed to the weaker entrenchment of constructions and a preference for explicit and transparent form-meaning pairings in these varieties. In sum, the results suggest that differences between the construction networks of varieties at different evolutionary stages result from a complex interplay of processing factors, input effects, second-language learning principles and, at least to a certain degree, cross-linguistic influence. In addition, the study shows that varieties of the same phase pattern very similarly in terms of their constructional choices, which provides support for Schneider's (2007) classification of varieties according to Dynamic Model stages.}, subject = {Englisch}, language = {en} }
