Bridging theory and practice in higher art education — didactic considerations and a course example
- From 2022 to 2024, I taught postcolonial theory and decolonial positions to students of all art and design disciplines and at all levels in their studies, within the Theory and History Department of the weißensee school of art and design berlin. Taking the stand that knowledge is not only discursive but that various media offer various ways of grasping the world, I endeavoured to provide courses that bridged theory and practice, through exhibition or publication projects, ultimately aiming to support the development of artistic practices based on research in the humanities. Including a syllabus for a specific teaching project within the Ethnological Museum in Berlin, the following text describes methods and considerations I took for my seminars that can be useful to others teaching at the confluence of theory and practice, or supporting the development of artistic practices based on research.
