Abstract
This study investigates the potential for Swiss industries in Southwest China and how this
potential reflects the strengths of Swiss industries. It also provides recommendations for how
this potential can be better realised. The study is based on a quantitative analysis of
secondary sources as well as on a qualitative analysis of expert interviews. The findings of
the analysis indicate that the main potential for Swiss industries is related to the growing
demand for consumer goods. Therefore, producers directly or indirectly involved in
producing consumer goods and services have the highest potential. With regard to the
existing industry clusters in Southwest China, the following key Swiss industries were found
to have the highest potential: Pharma/Chemistry, Luxury goods, Mechanical engineering,
Electrical engineering /Electronics and Food. It was also found that in order to fully exploit
the potential of Swiss industries, more FDI is needed. This in turn could be achieved through
Swiss business support institutions in Southwest China. It was concluded that a combined
Swiss consulate and Swiss Business Hub would be the ideal institution to achieve this. As
this study only assesses the general economic trends in Southwest China, further research on
trends at the industry or firm level is recommended.
