With healthcare widely recognized as one of the highest-impact frontiers for
digital transformation today, it also poses a seemingly insurmountable challenge
by nature of its inherent complexity. Technological change, under the mantle
of digital health, is pioneering the way forward and aiming to both answer
existing healthcare problems and expand the horizon of what is possible in
healthcare. However, despite the popularity of digital health, many initiatives
do not grow and evolve to create lasting change in health. At the heart of
digital health lies innovation as the primary engine to harness transformative
power. Thus, to succeed, new products and businesses within digital health
must foster that innovation. One potential is through the implementation of
design-inspired methodologies. Thus, it is the goal of this paper to identify how
digital health initiatives are exploring that potential and the practical implementation,
particularly within the geographic context of Berlin-Brandenburg
as a cluster for digital health and entrepreneurship. To achieve this goal, a
theoretical foundation is built on the intersections of digital health, innovation,
and design. After establishing the theoretical perspective towards the topic,
a mixed methods research approach is used to integrate qualitative interview
data with quantitative survey data from a cross-section of digital health players.
Finally, the data collected is analyzed on the basis of established theory to
identify trends and patterns in innovation methodology applications within
digital health.
