Social Segregation Pattern, Driving Forces and Outcomes — Case Studies: Berlin and Brussels

  • This thesis analyses social segregation patterns in Berlin and Brussels by first clarifying the driving forces and the outcomes of social segregation and then presenting case studies of the two cities. This thesis argues that the five major driving forces of social segregation are economic restructuring, low state intervention, liberal housing regime, large and fast-growing immigration, and historical events such as city divisions and crises. When social segregation in one city is severe, city residents are faced with deeper relational conflicts. This will lead to the growth of entirely different cultures and values, and thus increase misunderstanding between different communities. Case-studies revealed the driving forces and outcomes of social inequality of Berlin and Brussels. Berlin, having grown rapidly after reunification, has seen the greatest challenges as a result of a steep increase of immigration. Brussels, in contrast, having long been a large and well-developed globalized city, sees economic inequality as the major driving force of its social segregation. Ultimately, the comparison of the two cities cannot be confirmed without empirical analysis, however, this thesis provides an overview of social segregation patterns in Berlin and Brussels, and a strong foundation for further analysis of whether Berlin can expect to develop a segregation pattern similar to Brussels’s in the future
