Extensive soil erosion, caused by intensive use of modern agriculture, led to the destruction of soil monuments in Central Europe from the middle of the 20th century onwards (Bork et al. 1998).
The colluvias accumulated by these processes on the lower slope were investigated at the site Gortz on the Havel River System of the Havel by the University of Applied Sciences, Berlin in 2016. Consistent mapping of finds and their projection in a GIS into profile view as well as the combination of neighbouring strata enabled an improved dating of colluvias. In addition, the method facilitated the dating of historical water levels, which are also applicable to parts of the Lower Havel.
As a result, strong anthropogenic activities such as clay quarrying and bank straightening could be demonstrated for the Late Slavonic Period. A water level increase of Lake Oberer Beetzsee from a value under 29.4 m above sea level/ Normalhöhennull (a.s.l/NHN) in the 11th/12th century to approximately 29.8 m a.s.l/NHN in the 13th century could be observed via an interlocking horizon. However, isolated flooding events during the 13th century AD can be recorded up to a height of 30.5 m a.s.l/NHN. With a modern colluvium of one meter in thickness, the evidence of an acute endangerment of the ground monument by modern agriculture succeeded.
