TY - THES A1 - Torrez Galeano, Jarvin Marconi T1 - Assessing the Socio-economic Impact of Rural Road Projects in Nicaragua: A Study of the Road Integration Program II N2 - This thesis focuses on rural roads in Nicaragua, specifically examining the socio-economic impact of the Road Integration Program II between 2017 and 2022. In addition to contributing to the suggested areas for research in the literature on rural roads, this study complements the existing evaluation of the program, which primarily focused on short-term economic indicators. The research approach employed in this thesis includes a case study of the Road Integration Program II, utilizing secondary data sources and analyzing it using a before-and-after and with-and-without approach between intervened and nonintervened municipalities. The findings from this research provide evidence that the program has had a positive impact on formal employment. However, the impact on health is only evident on one of the two roads, while there is no significant impact on school enrollment rates, with a decrease observed in the ratio of girls to boys in secondary school on one of the roads. Consequently, the main conclusions drawn from this study highlight that rural roads, while offering substantial socio-economic benefits, require additional policies to be effective. The author presents policy recommendations regarding the promotion of the transport sector, tourism, and agriculture, investments in human capital, gender mainstreaming, and improvements in data collection.
