TY - THES A1 - Adhikari, Kapil T1 - Implementation_of_Multichannel_Systems_on_a_Zynq-Based_System-on-Module_for_Terahertz_Spectroscopy N2 - The Terahertz Sensors and Systems group at Fraunhofer HHI has developed a single channel continuous wave terahertz spectrometer. This spectrometer utilizes photoconductive antennas to convert an optical beat signal, generated by two lasers operating at different wavelengths, into the THz frequency range. Its potential for real-world applications is demonstrated through thickness measurements of multilayer dielectric samples. Scaling the system to a multichannel configuration would enable simultaneous measurements at multiple spatial points, enhancing imaging resolution and expanding it to industrial applications, such as radar-based object tracking and detection in autonomous vehicles and drone navigation. This thesis investigates two innovative approaches for scaling the single channel terahertz spectrometer to a multichannel configuration using the RedPitaya STEMLab 125-14. The RedPitaya board consists of a Zynq7020 System on Chip (SoC), a dual channel Analog-Digital-Converter (ADC) and a dual channel Digital-Analog-Convert (DAC). The first approach explores channel expansion through an external 8 channel ADC (ADC20Click), utilizing the Linux kernel’s SPI driver for communication. The second approach implements a synchronized cluster of multiple RedPitaya devices in a master-slave architecture, leveraging their integrated ADCs and distributed clock synchronization. The SPI communication between the RedPitaya and the ADC20Click, operating on a Linux-based system, faced challenges in achieving synchronized data acquisition due to the non-deterministic nature of OS scheduling. Consequently, the sampling rate varied between 5 ksps to 8 ksps. Given the current system architecture, this variability makes the approach unsuitable for integration. However, for other THz applications that can tolerate lower sample rates and non-synchronized operation, this method could still be a viable option. In contrast, the approach utilizing multiple RedPitaya boards in a cluster successfully achieved synchronized data acquisition across multiple ADC channels. This was accomplished by generating and distributing clock and synchronization signals from the master device to the connected slave devices. A constant delay between sample acquisitions across devices was observed, which could be compensated using a delay unit with configurable delay lengths. The system maintained a unified and scalable hardware architecture. Integrating the new approach into the existing THz spectrometer, it demonstrated synchronized measurements across three channels, utilizing one ADC channel from each RedPitaya board in the cluster. Compared to the current system, the RedPitaya cluster managed to achieve a similar dynamic range of 60 dB for a single shot measurement, enabling the development of a multi-channel CW spectrometer using the proposed approach. However, a significant aspect often overlooked is the integration of Explainable AI, specifically interpretable machine learning approaches. This thesis explores the relevance and applicability of existing XAI methods to contemporary transformer based models, widely used in applications such as ChatGPT. Through the development of an explainable application prototype, this study assesses the feasibility of integrating XAI techniques into practical, industry level applications. Wabi sabi, a Japanese aesthetic concept encompassing as the wisdom of natural simplicity, is rooted in notion of embracing imperfection and incompleteness. In contrast to wabi sabi is the concept of modernism, which revolves around the idea of functionality and efficiency. The essence of both concepts can be adapted to everyday life today. The obtaining of functionality and efficiency is suggested as worth striving for. The world is becoming increasingly fast-paced, which is also evident in the economic sector, literally epitomized in the term „fast fashion“. To create a solution for this problematic is to combine the values of wabi sabi with the general aesthetics of the Western world and modernism to create a more complex, versatile aesthetic that takes into account the environment. To attain this goal, it is necessary to understand the core tenets of both concepts and place them in the context of modern life. This entails examining how wabi sabi can exist in modern life and examine its compatibility with digitization. Not only digital space, but also the correlation with real space will be considered, as well as the broader role of space and time in design. Moreover, the similarities and differences between the two concepts will be researched. However, its environmental impact has been disregarded thus far. In this thesis, local energy and resources consumption of the prediction in four AIED models are measured using two different measurement approaches. The results suggest that boolean or mathematically explainable models such as decision tree and logistic regression have a low energy demand. On the other hand, in models that use a complex optimization process or have mulitple interconnected layers like support vector machine (SVM) or multilayer perceptron (MLP), the resource demand rises significantly. A decision tree model is recommended as the model of choice to deploy on the learning platform as it reveals the lowest emissions in both measurements and shows high performance prediction values. The thesis concludes with recommendations for AIED developers and policy ecommendations and pledges for higher attention on the environmental impact of AIED. The research applies Benjamin J. Cohen's cost and benefit methodology to assess the costs and benefits associated with RMB internationalization. The study finds that the RMB internationalization campaign gained significant momentum after the global financial crisis, with the RMB becoming the 5th most active currency for global payments and gaining inclusion in the SDR currency basket. The paper assumes that Chinese policy is primarily motivated by China's great power ambitions and pursuit of political prestige and autonomy. By examining the costs and benefits of RMB internationalization, the study confirms this assumption but with ambivalent results. The potential economic benefits appear significant, but the limited availability of quantitative data and the early stage of RMB internationalization hinder a thorough interpretation. On the other hand, the political benefits, often derived from the economic benefits, are supported by evidence from the literature, indicating their importance to Chinese authorities. The costs associated with RMB internationalization, which are harder to determine at this stage, seem to be outweighed by the benefits and may even have a net positive impact, such as currency appreciation. However, the meaningfulness of these results may be limited as more data becomes available in the future, potentially proving them inaccurate. Overall, this thesis contributes to the existing literature by applying Cohen's cost and benefit methodology to the Chinese RMB internationalization campaign and highlighting the political dimension of China's monetary ambitions. Furthermore, this thesis deals with the question of how emotions can be visualised in art. Therefore, art therapy is introduced to examine to which extent art and therapy are interrelated and mutually supportive. A second example is furthermore specified by the personal processing of emotions in art in addition to abstract, expressionistic works of art created by the author. The thesis then focuses on the personal experience of BPD and explains in detail what BPD can feel like to a person affected by it. Concrete examples are given to broaden the understanding. The aim of this thesis is to visualise the emotional states of BPD by means of a clothing collection to find out if the process of visualisation and expression can benefit a mentally ill person. The design process is based on the previously elaborated criteria and characteristics of BPD and visualisations are supported by abstract expressionist paintings made by the author. The current state of copyright is examined through a review of copyright literature followed by a structured legal discussion, using the principle of proportionality as a framework to debate its relevancy within the modern digitalised economy and highlight how the excessive privatisation of cultural products and ideas may be problematic for society. Empirical evidence further confirms that, in some cases, it may be beneficial to reduce copyright protection in favour of more flexible rights systems for both private copyright holders and society in its aggregate, and hence, existing alternatives to copyright, such as the Creative Commons, are explored. However, despite the development of new digital technologies and internet platforms empowering artists and creators to publish and choose the protection of their work independently, most continue to maintain all rights reserved.
