<title language="eng">Realisation and experimental characterisation of a coherent time-division multiplexing receiver for spatial-division multiplexed transmission</title>
To meet the increasing demand of capacity in communications, research must stay ahead of the industry so that the industry can continue to supply the demand in the future. A promising approach to this is to explore the efficient use of spatial-division multiplexing. This thesis investigates the realization and characterization of a coherent fibre-optical time-division multiplexing receiver for spatial-division multiplexed transmission. It is a laboratory testbed to investigate spatial-division multiplexing in order to draw conclusions about the properties of components. The work demonstrates through the construction and commissioning of this receiver that the investigation of emerging fibre types under laboratory conditions can be carried out equivalently to conventional investigations with less equipment. The possibility to characterise mode-dependent loss is made possible by scaling the packets equivalent to the loss of the delay fibres. Skew investigations are carried out by measuring the delay fibres to sample accuracy and investigating the relationship between temperature and skew. Compared to other work, this builds on data-based rather than blind digital signal processing. The principle of this approach is demonstrated using two spatial paths of a 3-mode few-mode fibre. Dataaided digital-signal processing is used. Practical constraints and limitations of the time-division multiplexing approach for spatial multiplexing are explored. The behaviour under temperature fluctuations corresponds to the refractive index change of all fibres, whereby the relative delay on the signal path leads to a skew between the temporal packets. A delay imbalance between the signal and LO path leads to a failure of the channel estimation in a coupled transmission. The scalability is investigated by comparing a 2- and 3-path setup. The received superimposed power of the signal and LO path is reduced when the number of spatial paths is increased. The results provide an attractive opportunity to explore spatial-division multiplexing in a laboratory setting and thus to extend the capacity limits of optical fibre-based transmissions in the future.
