<title language="eng">The contrast of wabi sabi and modernism and how both concepts combined can act as an approach for sustainable fashion</title>
This thesis examines the contrasting aesthetics of modernism and wabi sabi. Wabi sabi, a Japanese aesthetic concept encompassing as the wisdom of natural simplicity, is rooted in notion of embracing imperfection and incompleteness. In contrast to wabi sabi is the concept of modernism, which revolves around the idea of functionality and efficiency. The essence of both concepts can be adapted to everyday life today. The obtaining of functionality and efficiency is suggested as worth striving for. The world is becoming increasingly fast-paced, which is also evident in the economic sector, literally epitomized in the term „fast fashion“. To create a solution for this problematic is to combine the values of wabi sabi with the general aesthetics of the Western world and modernism to create a more complex, versatile aesthetic that takes into account the environment. To attain this goal, it is necessary to understand the core tenets of both concepts and place them in the context of modern life. This entails examining how wabi sabi can exist in modern life and examine its compatibility with digitization. Not only digital space, but also the correlation with real space will be considered, as well as the broader role of space and time in design. Moreover, the similarities and differences between the two concepts will be researched. In order to create a sustainable collection that not only takes environmental factors into account but also harmonizes the aesthetics of both concepts, it will be examined how they can be adapted to sustainable fashion.
