- This bachelor's thesis examines the implementation of smart grids as a central component of the energy transition in Germany and analyzes the role of blockchain technology in this transformation process. Considering the increasing integration of renewable energies and the associated decentralization of energy supply, conventional power grids face fundamental challenges that require a comprehensive modernization of the grid infrastructure.
Following an introduction to the theoretical foundations of smart grids and their essential components, the thesis undertakes a systematic analysis of the technological, regulatory, societal, economic, and ecological challenges in smart grid implementation. In the technological domain, the focus is particularly on requirements for grid stability, information and communication technologies, and energy management systems. The regulatory analysis centers on the Act on the Digitalization of the Energy Transition and other relevant legal frameworks, while the societal dimension illuminates acceptance issues and necessary incentive systems. Economic and ecological aspects complete this multidimensional examination.
The second research focus centers on blockchain technology and its potential to address some of the identified challenges. The thesis analyzes various application areas of blockchain in the energy sector, including energy information monitoring, peer-to-peer energy trading, and cybersecurity in smart grids. Both the advantages and the challenges and limitations of the technology are critically reflected upon.
The findings of the thesis demonstrate that the successful implementation of smart grids requires an integrated approach that combines technological innovations with appropriate regulatory frameworks, societal acceptance, and economic viability. Blockchain technology can make a valuable contribution, particularly regarding decentralization, transparency, and automation of energy transactions, but itself still faces developmental challenges. This bachelor's thesis thus provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of smart grid implementation and outlines perspectives for the future design of a sustainable, digital energy system.
