Accountability in a Globalising World : International Non-Governmental Organisations and Foundations
(2009)
Vorwort
(2009)
Introduction
(2012)
Today is a new metropolitan age and for the first time ever more people live in cities than they do anywhere else. As cities strengthen their international and cultural influence, the global world is acted out most articulately in the world's urban hubs - through its diverse cultures, broad networks and innovative styles of governance. Looking at the city through its internal dynamics, the book examines how governance and cultural policy play out in a national and international framework.
Making a truly global contribution to the literature, editors Isar and Anheier bring together a truly international and highly-respected collection of scholars. In doing so, they skilfully steer debates beyond the city as an economic powerhouse, to cover issues that fully comprehend a city's cultural dynamics and its impact on policy including alternative economies, creativity, migration, diversity, sustainability, education and urban planning.
Innovative in its approach and content, this book is ideal for students, scholars and researchers interested in sociology, urban studies, cultural studies, and public policy.
Inter-parliamentary cooperation and its challenges: The case of Economic and Financial Governance
(2015)
What capacities do states need to deal with the challenges of the contemporary age? How can the capacity of public administration be enhanced to meaningfully contribute to public problem-solving? The Governance Report 2014 develops a framework to explore the administrative capacities of the public sector in OECD countries, analyses how these capacities have been used to develop innovative policy approaches to key governance challenges , and explores governance innovations to enhance governance capacities. In addition, the Report presents a dashboard of indicators that assess administrative capacities from multiple perspectives. The Governance Report 2014 advances the debate on the problem-solving capacity of the modern state in the light of ongoing and future challenges.
In its focus on the relationships between civil society activity across the political spectrum, communications and democratic change, Global Civil Society 2007/8 explores how activists and organisations are exploiting the effects of globalisation to create or expand spaces for debate and discussion, often using new forms of communications, even in closed regimes such as Burma, Iran and China. In addition to a focus on the civil society activity in illiberal regimes, this edition of the Yearbook examines the effectiveness of democracy promotion efforts by donor organisations and NGOs in transition countries, and how best to reinvigorate democracy in established democratic societies so that citizens can have a greater say in decisions that affect their lives. Global Civil Society 2007/8 is the seventh Yearbook in a series that has become the standard work on all aspects of contemporary global civil society for activists, practitioners, students and academics alike. It is essential reading for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the key actors, forms and manifestations of global civil society around the world today. The Global Civil Society Yearbook is a collaboration between LSE's Centre for the Study of Global Governance, UCLA's Center for Civil Society and for 2007/8 the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania.(About the Book, Publishers Information)
(Buchinhalt, Verlagsangabe)

Gerhard Hammerschmid and Tamyko Ysa Global diffusion of an Anglo-Saxon concept The idea of public–private partnership (PPP) as a model for public procurement and financing public investments arrived on a wave of public management modernization issues in the early 1990s in Europe and was first implemented on a broader basis in the UK under the Private Finance Initiative (PFI). A European Investment Bank (2007) report clearly shows that the UK is still a forerunner in terms of both number of PPP projects and volume. Out of a cumulative value of €194.7 billion that has been signed up until the end of 2006, the UK accounts for 57.7 per cent. However, it is also clear that the UK market is maturing (e.g. Ysa, 2007), whereas the rest of the European PPP market is growing. International organizations such as the World Bank, the OECD and the International Monetary Fund, together with multinational professional companies (e.g. PwC, 2005; Deloitte, 2006a, 2006b; DLA Piper, 2007; Ernst & Young, 2008), played an important role in the international diffusion of PPPs both as promoters and as knowledge carriers. Within Europe especially, the European Commission has given a strong impetus in a similar form when launching a Green Paper on PPPs in 2004 (European Commission, 2004). PPPs have raised high expectations among scholars, governments and practitioners in Europe alike. They are seen as ‘a new generation of management reforms’ (Pollitt, 2003, p. 53) and have found their way into many government programmes throughout Europe. The German federal...(Publishers information)
Many countries are still struggling to adapt to the broad and unexpected effects of modernization initiatives. As changes take shape, governments are challenged to explore new reforms. The public sector is now characterized by profound transformation across the globe, with ramifications that are yet to be interpreted. To convert this transformation into an ongoing state of improvement, policymakers and civil service leaders must learn to implement and evaluate change. This book is an important contribution to that end.
Reforming the Public Sector presents comparative perspectives of government reform and innovation, discussing three decades of reform in public sector strategic management across nations. The contributors examine specific reform-related issues including the uses and abuses of public sector transparency, the
This volume will greatly aid practitioners and policymakers to better understand the principles underpinning ongoing reforms in the public sector. Giovanni Tria, Giovanni Valotti, and their cohorts offer a scientific understanding of the main issues at stake in this arduous process. They place the approach to public administration reform in a broad international context and identify a road map for public management. (About the book, Publisher Information)
Based on an executive survey this article analyses the extent to which a new managerial logic has replaced traditional administrative values and identity in Austria. We do not find any strong evidence of a new managerial logic but rather modifications, local translations and the emergence of a hybrid identity.
Stiftung Mercator staged a round-table discussion on the topic of Cultural Diplomacy, China and the Roles of Foundations. This special publication picks up on and addresses in greater detail the topics and results of the round-table discussions. As well as discussing the various definitions of the terms “soft power” and “cultural diplomacy”, the publication raises the question of what foundations can do in concrete terms to build trust between China and the West.(About the book)
The chapter situates governance innovations within the broad innovation literature. It offers a multi-dimensional concept of innovations; reviews causes and conditions for innovation such as innovator characteristics and innovation systems; highlights the interdependent relationship between innovation and isomorphism; and identifies the main characteristics of innovations in the realm of governance. Our engagement with the literature reveals seven propositions and hypotheses that can guide research on governance innovations in the future.
It is a decade since the debut of the landmark Global Civil Society yearbook. During that time, as the yearbook has attempted to debate, map and measure the shifting contours of this contested phenomenon, relationships between state and society have shifted. On both sides promises have been made and broken, expectations raised and shattered, partnerships brokered and roles reversed. Moreover, from the instigation of the International Criminal Court by a coalition of NGOs to the mass protests of civilians across North Africa, the influence of non-state actors has become impossible to discount.
In this anniversary edition, activists and academics look back on ten years of 'politics from below', and ask whether it is merely the critical gaze upon the concept that has changed - or whether there is something genuinely new in kind about the way in which civil society is now operating.
