The joint research project CARE REGIO aims to modernize the care system with digital solutions. We focus on the development of a uniform electronic care record, uniform data exchange between care facilities, and technical assistive systems, which shall all be unified in a standardized care-based storage solution.
This mixed-methods study aimed to investigate to what extent two-week device-supported cycle training and app-based fall risk assessment are feasible measures for fall prevention in older people living at home (N = 10). A questionnaire assessed participants’ motivation, and a fall risk score was calculated pre- and post-intervention. Semi-structured interviews with two experts were conducted retrospectively. The results revealed a high subjective motivation during the training and a slight reduction of the fall risk. Both the training and the assessment are feasible and well-received interventions with potential for technology-supported fall prevention.
A new, freely programmable, scalable control system for academic research purposes was developed. The intention was, to have a control unit capable of handling multiple PT1000 temperature sensors at reasonable accuracy and temperature range, as well as digital input signals and providing more powerful output signals at 230V AC than conventional control units. To take full advantage of the system, control-loops are run in real time. The whole system runs independently of a personal computer. The two on-board RS232 connectors allow to connect further units to use more sensors or actuators or to connect other laboratory equipment, as required. To allow usage for long-time experiments, systematically electronic components with low failure-in-time (FIT) rate have been chosen in order to achieve high life expectancy. This paper describes the third prototype, which now provides stable measurements, and an improvement in accuracy compared to the previous designs. A rough estimation about the expected mean time between failures is given. As test case, a thermal solar system to produce hot tap water and assist heating in a single-family house was implemented. The solar fluid pump was power-controlled and several temperatures at different points in the hydraulic system were measured and used in the control algorithms. The hardware design proved suitable to test several different control strategies and their corresponding algorithms for the thermal solar system.

Audio Feedback for Device-Supported Balance Training: Parameter Mapping and Influencing Factors
(2020)
Recent studies suggest that real-time auditory feedback is an effective method to facilitate motor learning. The evaluation of the parameter mapping (sound-to-movement mapping) is a crucial, yet frequently neglected step in the development of audio feedback. We therefore conducted two experiments to evaluate audio parameters with target finding exercises designed for balance training. In the first experiment with ten participants, five different audio parameters were evaluated on the X-axis (mediolateral movement). Following that, in a larger experiment with twenty participants in a two-dimensional plane (mediolateral and anterior-posterior movement), a basic and synthetic audio model was compared to a more complex audio model with musical characteristics. Participants were able to orient themselves and find the targets with the audio models. In the one-dimensional condition of experiment one, percussion sounds and synthetic sound wavering were the overall most effective audio parameters. In experiment two, the synthetic model was more effective and better evaluated by the participants. In general, basic sounds were more helpful than complex (musical) sound models. Musical abilities and age were correlated with certain exercise scores. Audio feedback is a promising approach for balance training and should be evaluated with patients. Preliminary evaluation of the respective parameter mapping is highly advisable.
In “concept for a new precise academic gripper” the mechanical aspects of the new gripper were presented [3]. In this paper, the idea is improved and expanded towards a clever control part. This paper mainly focuses on the functional ideas and the state of research concerning the imaging tasks. Experiment and intermediate results of the imaging process are discussed. Different approaches of skin colour detection in diverse colour spaces have been tested. Skin colour detection is investigated whether skin colour can be monitored to improve work safety in terms of functional safety. To enhance versatility, several ideas are combined to form a clever gripping device.
A non-randomized controlled effectiveness study of a smoking cessation intervention for adolescents
(2020)
Summary: Despite a remarkable decrease of smoking prevalence among German teenagers over the last 20 years, a substantial number of adolescents report current cigarette use, especially youth with low socioeconomic status. This study investigated the effectiveness of a school-based psychosocial adolescent smoking cessation intervention under real-world conditions.
Methods: The intervention consisted of six sessions of school-based group counseling, using moti- vational enhancement and cognitive-behavioral content, along with 4 weeks of follow-up care by text messaging and phone calls. A total of 47 smoking cessation classes were implemented in secon- dary schools all over Germany. The intervention group (IG) consisted of 272 currently smoking students nested in 41 schools, and the control group (CG) comprised 240 currently smoking stu- dents nested in 10 schools. Assignment to IG and CG was non-randomized. Logistic regression analyses (complete case, intention to treat, and full-information-maximum-likelihood) were con- ducted to test group differences in past 30-day smoking abstinence at 6-month follow-up. Baseline differences between IG and CG and intraclass correlation were accounted for in the analyses.
Results: There were no differences in school characteristics between IG and CG schools at baseline. At 6-month follow-up, the IG had a significantly higher abstinence rate than the CG (Intent-to- treat analysis: 14 % IG vs. 5 % CG; adjusted odds ratio = 2.73; 95 % confidence interval: 1.19 – 6.27). Results were consistent for complete case and full-information-maximum-likelihood analyses.
Conclusions: Results suggest that school-based psychosocial interventions can be feasible and effec- tive for smoking cessation among adolescents in schools with a higher proportion of youth with low socioeconomic status.
Social Media in B2B
(2020)
This study contributes to the emerging scientific literature about social media marketing by providing a realistic overview about the usage methods and effects of social media in German B2B companies. It furthermore shows how these usage methods are related to specific effects. Basis for this study are theoretical findings from literature review that have been examined then with the help of a quantitative survey. A theoretical framework has been developed and 14 hypotheses have been defined to discuss the topic.
138 German B2B organizations from various industries reveals that they attach great importance to social media marketing in general, but do not want to spend more than 20 % of their marketing-budget for social media. These companies use social media as brand building, sales support and knowledge management tool, but do not use it as recruiting, customer relationship management or innovation management tool. Furthermore, within these 138 German B2B companies, brand advocacy can be caused by social media usage as a brand building tool, customer satisfaction can be caused by social media usage as a sales support tool and the effect ‘conversations with customers’ can be caused by social media usage as a customer relationship management tool.
Results also indicate that it cannot be proved within these 138 German B2B companies, that employer branding is caused by social media usage as recruiting tool, that customer loyalty is caused by social media usage as sales support tool, that open innovation is caused by social media usage as innovation management tool and that thought leadership is caused by social media usage as knowledge management tool. Another finding of this study is that smaller and larger German B2B companies attach the same importance on social media.
Current chatbot development platforms and frameworks facilitate setting up the language and dialog part of chatbots, while connecting it to backend services and business functions requires substantial manual coding effort and programming skills. This paper proposes an approach to overcome this situation. It proposes an architecture with a chatbot as frontend using an IoT (Internet of Things) platform as a middleware for connections to backend services. Specifically, it elaborates and demonstrates how to combine a chatbot developed on the open source development platform Rasa with the open source platform Node-RED, allowing low-code or no-code development of a transactional conversational user interface from frontend to backend.
Past studies have used power plant dispatch models with fixed plant portfolios to demonstrate that flexible capture systems may allow operators to increase profits in current electricity markets by increasing plant output at times of high demand. Some of these studies have also speculated that flexible capture systems may be valuable in future electricity systems with high shares of renewable energy as they could allow fossil fuel plants with capture to rapidly respond to changes in residual load. However, few studies have actually examined the role that plants with flexible capture could play in future power systems. Thus, this study examines the role that power generation with flexible capture systems could play in a future European power system where 80% of generation (by energy) is supplied by renewables. The results show that conventional base- and mid-load capacity decreases while the peak-load capacity (i.e., open cycle gas turbines) increases. In European regions with high shares of renewables, the residual load duration curve become steeper, and hourly changes in residual load increase significantly and happen more frequently at low load levels. The shift towards peak capacity and general decrease in load factors places technologies with high capital costs at a relative disadvantage. In the scenario in which CO2 prices reach 650 per tonne CO2 in 2050, approximately one-fifth of the CCS capacity deployed is equipped with flexible capture. However, in a scenario in which CO2 prices reach € 100 per tonne CO2 in 2050, very little capacity is equipped with flexible capture systems as the cost of emitting CO2 offsets the value of flexibility.
Zu alt für „New Work“?
(2019)
Mitarbeiter verlassen keine Unternehmen, sondern schlechte Führungskräfte.
In the Automotive industry and especially in the ADAS domain, functions like “Vehicle Detection”, “Lane Detection” undergo a very costly and time-consuming validation process before their final deployment in the vehicle.
After the completion of the development process, image based detection algorithms usually rely on huge data sets of previously recorded data for performance testing and validation. Though vision data sets like “KITTI Vision Benchmark Dataset” and others are currently available for public use, there still lies numerous requirements that need
to be satisfied and steps that need to be followed in order to pave the way for a proper and meaningful use of the recorded data sets in the scope of image based function testing and validation. Using the publicly available recorded data may be in some cases a good starting point but as we all know sooner or later we will need a more
customized/personalized recorded data sets that capture more precise and detailed specifications like the camera’s technical specifications or even its mounting position in the car. Furthermore, depending on the image based function under investigation, recorded data should also reflect certain driving scenarios in specific environmental conditions (rain, snow, fog, at sun rise, at daytime, at night …) or specific driving parameters like, speed, acceleration, grip, car
orientation, position in lane, etc. that that may be too hard to safety due to safety, financial restrictions or even time
limitations.
In this article we present a method which indicates the most important parameters of influence concerning the fuel consumption and regulated emissions. Using RDE measurements a consumption map of the vehicle and enhanced mathematical models are created that allow the prediction of fuel consumption and emissions for simulated driving routes.
The results show that the simulated fuel consumption fits the measured consumption of the vehicle very good. The deviations between calculated and measured NO2 and NO are relatively high. This is due to the lack of simulation of the emissions after-treatment which is not possible as the relevant parameters are not monitored.
Further investigations are planned for hybrid vehicles, extended environmental con-ditions and modelling of the aftertreatment.

Load Forecasting in District Heating Systems Using Stacked Ensembles of Machine Learning Algorithms
(2021)
For district heating, heat demand forecasting is playing a key role for an optimised power plant dispatch. Machine Learning can help to significantly improve forecasts of thermal loads. The prediction quality of neural networks is higher than that of decision trees in most cases. However, compared to decision trees neural networks have weaknesses when extrapolating outside known ranges. This work presents a novel method called “Deep DHC” (Deep Learning for District Heating and Cooling), which combines these two approaches in order to benefit from strengths of both methods. On the one hand, the novel approach uses conventional decision tree based regression algorithms such as the AdaBoost and Random Forest, as well as artificial neural networks. In addition to common feed forward neural networks (FNN), a deep learning network structure, which consists of long short-term memory (LSTM) cells, is used for the first time. The LSTM method has already proven to be very powerful in modern speech recognition. In order to achieve best possible heat demand forecasts, the aforementioned methods for load forecasting are combined and weighted by an additional machine learning method. Results show that it is possible to achieve a further improvement in forecasting quality for district heating loads by purposefully combining individual forecasting methods. Hence, mean and absolute deviations are significantly reduced in comparison to the individual methods.
The present study investigated the mental workload associated with driving a vehicle equipped with Lane Keeping Assistance System (LKAS). Specifically, an experiment was carried out with16participants driving with LKAS in four real-world scenarios. Effects on mental workload were evaluated with psychophysiological measures such as heart rate and skin conductance response (SCR). The driving performance, which is also a measure of evaluating mental workload, was assessed by measure such as steering reversal rate, variation of lateral position and steering effort. The result suggested that LKAS has reduced physical workload in the steering task. However, the lane keeping performance was not improved. Moreover, the NASA-TLX showed that participants perceived higher mental workload while driving with LKAS. This effect was mirrored in the SCR. The objective data showed that LKAS was associated with higher steering reversal rate, which might explain the reason of participants perceiving higher mental workload. Overall, it was suggested that the mental workload was higher with the tested LKAS.
Due to the rapid progress in the development of automated vehicles over the last decade, their market entry is getting closer. One of the remaining challenges is the safety assessment and type approval of automated vehicles, as conventional testing in the real world would involve an unmanageable mileage. Scenario-based testing using simulation is a promising candidate for overcoming this approval trap. Although the research community has recognized the importance of safeguarding in recent years, the quality of simulation models is rarely taken into account. Without investigating the errors and uncertainties of models, virtual statements about vehicle safety are meaningless. This paper describes a whole process combining model validation and safety assessment. It is demonstrated by means of an actual type-approval regulation that deals with the safety assessment of lane-keeping systems. Based on a thorough analysis of the current state-of-the-art, this paper introduces two approaches for selecting test scenarios. While the model validation scenarios are planned from scratch and focus on scenario coverage, the type-approval scenarios are extracted from measurement data based on a data-driven pipeline. The deviations between lane-keeping behavior in the real and virtual world are quantified using a statistical validation metric. They are then modeled using a regression technique and inferred from the validation experiments to the unseen virtual type-approval scenarios. Finally, this paper examines safety-critical lane crossings, taking into account the modeling errors. It demonstrates the potential of the virtual-based safeguarding process using exemplary simulations and real driving tests.
When will automated vehicles come onto the market? This question has puzzled the automotive industry and society for years. The technology and its implementation have made rapid progress over the last decade, but the challenge of how to prove the safety of these systems has not yet been solved. Since a market launch without proof of safety would neither be accepted by society nor by legislators, much time and many resources have been invested into safety assessment in recent years in order to develop new approaches for an efficient assessment. This paper therefore provides an overview of various approaches, and gives a comprehensive survey of the so-called scenario-based approach. The scenario-based approach is a promising method, in which individual traffic situations are typically tested by means of virtual
simulation. Since an infinite number of different scenarios can theoretically occur in real-world traffic, even the scenario-based approach leaves the question unanswered as to how to break these down into a finite set of scenarios, and find those which are representative in order to render testing more manageable. This
paper provides a comprehensive literature reviewof related safety-assessment publications that deal precisely with this question. Therefore, this paper develops a novel taxonomy for the scenario-based approach, and classifies all literature sources. Based on this, the existing methods will be compared with each other and,
as one conclusion, the alternative concept of formal verification will be combined with the scenario-based approach. Finally, future research priorities are derived.
Unified Framework and Survey for Model Verification, Validation and Uncertainty Quantification
(2020)
Simulation is becoming increasingly important in the development, testing and approval process in many areas of engineering, ranging from finite element models to highly complex cyber-physical systems such as autonomous cars. Simulation must be accompanied by model verification, validation and uncertainty quantification (VV&UQ) activities to assess the inherent errors and uncertainties of each simulation model. However, the VV&UQ methods differ greatly between the application areas. In general, a major challenge is the aggregation of uncertainties from calibration and validation experiments to the actual model predictions under new, untested conditions. This is especially relevant due to high extrapolation uncertainties, if the experimental conditions differ strongly from the prediction conditions, or if the output quantities required for prediction cannot be measured during the experiments. In this paper, both the heterogeneous VV&UQ landscape and the challenge of aggregation will be addressed with a novel modular and unified framework to enable credible decision making based on simulation models. This paper contains a comprehensive survey of over 200 literature sources from many application areas and embeds them into the unified framework. In addition, this paper analyzes and compares the VV&UQ methods and the application areas in order to identify strengths and weaknesses and to derive further research directions. The framework thus combines a variety of VV&UQ methods, so that different engineering areas can benefit from new methods and combinations. Finally, this paper presents a procedure to select a suitable method from the framework for the desired application.
The goal of the presented work is to develop an automotive radar sensor behavioral model to outline closed loop interaction of driver and vehicle in a synthetic environment. For this interaction open simulation interface (OSI) and functional mock-up interface (FMI) standards are used. This paper describes the architecture overview, working concept of FMI, OSI and different radar functions like radar channel and digital signal processing (DSP) in detail. The description of the scenario for the verification of radar behavioral model results and development of highly automated driving (HAD) functions for the closed loop simulation is elaborated in this paper.
The enormous power consumption of Bitcoin has led to undifferentiated discussions in science and practice about the sustainability of blockchain and distributed ledger technology in general. However, blockchain technology is far from homogeneous - not only with regard to its applications, which now go far beyond cryptocurrencies and have reached businesses and the public sector, but also with regard to its technical characteristics and, in particular, its power consumption. This paper summarizes the status quo of the power consumption of various implementations of blockchain technology, with special emphasis on the recent 'Bitcoin Halving' and so-called 'zk-rollups'. We argue that although Bitcoin and other proof-of-work blockchains do indeed consume a lot of power, alternative blockchain solutions with significantly lower power consumption are already available today, and new promising concepts are being tested that could further reduce in particular the power consumption of large blockchain networks in the near future. From this we conclude that although the criticism of Bitcoin's power consumption is legitimate, it should not be used to derive an energy problem of blockchain technology in general. In many cases in which processes can be digitised or improved with the help of more energy-efficient blockchain variants, one can even expect net energy savings.
Package ‘CoopGame’
(2019)
The theory of cooperative games with transferable utility offers useful insights into the way parties can share gains from cooperation and secure sustainable agreements, see e.g. one of the books by Chakravarty,Mitra and Sarkar (2015, ISBN:978-1107058798) or by Driessen (1988,ISBN:978-9027727299) for more details. A comprehensive set of tools for cooperative game theory with transferable utility is provided. Users can create special families of cooperative games, like e.g. bankruptcy games, cost sharing games and weighted voting games. There are functions to check various game properties and to compute five different set-valued solution concepts for cooperative games. A large number of point-valued solution concepts is available reflecting the diverse application areas of cooperative game theory. Some of these point-valued solution concepts can be used to analyze weighted voting games and measure the influence of individual voters within a voting body. There are routines for visualizing both set-valued and point-valued solutions in the case of three or four players.
With the digital transformation and the increasing technological requirements that the tourism industry has to face in the future, the importance of data quality and digital data streams is growing. As more and more data is collected from a few large platforms and often used as an exclusive basis for the development of new services, both, the tourism industry and users are becoming increasingly dependent on the business models and applications of global players. In order to guarantee a digital market for data and applications in the coming years and to find an answer on how to react actively to the outlined developments, it is necessary to consider certain data as infrastructure and as a public good. Following this thought, it must be ensured that the relevant digital information flows in tourism will be transparent and openly available as a crucial basis for innovation and new business models for the general public in the future. The provision of data as Open Data is an approach that has become more and more established worldwide and beyond the field of tourism, and it has been anchored in legislation since the signing of the Open Data Charter by the G8 states in June 2013 (1). In addition to increasing transparency and more data democracy, Open Data is also associated with high economic expectations.
An EU study estimates that, based on the free flow of data, the added value for the European data economy could increase from just under € 300 billion in 2016 to € 739 billion in 2020 (2). For Germany, the authors of a study commissioned by the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung estimated between 20.1 and 131.1 billion euros in potential added value through Open Data by 2026, depending on the degree to which Open Data can be established as a key strategic component of social action (3). However, in the field of tourism, the topic of Open Data is still relatively new. For this reason, a Think Tank with international and cross-industry experts set a first goal to discuss and evaluate the significance of Open Data for the tourism industry in September 2017. At the heart of the shared vision on exploiting the emerging opportunities is the development of an Open Digital Data Infrastructure for tourism, where all relevant information in tourism should be provided as Open Data through a coordinated collaboration and cross-industry networking of stakeholders. The joint development of an Open Knowledge Graph for tourism in Europe based on Linked Open Data proposed by Prof. Dr. Fensel of the Semantic Technology Institute in Innsbruck could be an approach to realise the vision.
Since trust is an important basis for creating purposeful networks of people and data, the development of coordinated strategies for the implementation of the vision was primarily considered as a leadership challenge. In addition, the need to prepare the topic of Open Data in tourism for different stakeholders in such a way that the respective challenges and opportunities for tourism become transparent and clearly understandable, was also identified. This white paper summarizes the main findings of the Think Tank and provides an overview and recommendations on current developments in Open Data in tourism. At the same time, it is a call to the industry to actively participate in the strategic discussion and to take on part of the leadership task for the implementation of an Open Digital Data Infrastructure in tourism.
The public goods game is a famous example illustrating the tragedy of the commons (Hardin in Science 162:1243–1248, 1968). In this game cooperating individuals contribute to a pool, which in turn is distributed to all members of the group, including defectors who reap the same rewards as cooperators without having made a contribution before. The question is now, how to incentivize group members to all cooperate as it maximizes the common good. While costly punishment (Helbing et al. in New J Phys 12:083005, 2010) presents one such method, the cost of punishment still reduces the common good. The selfishness of the group members favors defectors. Here we show that including other members of the groups and sharing rewards with them can be another incentive for cooperation, avoiding the cost required for punishment. Further, we show how punishment and this form of inclusiveness interact. This work suggests that a redistribution similar to a basic income that is coupled to the economic success of the entire group could overcome the tragedy of the commons.
Emerging digital technologies enable the creation of new services and business models, leading to ecosystems’ continuous change. In the tourism industry, new digital-savvy players like Airbnb have entered and created entirely new market segments, while many existing players are challenged to redefine their business logic. However, the literature does not provide a generic overview of the value network in tourism, including new market players, and their ways of interacting. Therefore, this paper develops a current overview of the value network of the European tourism ecosystem. By analyzing the business models and value streams of 704 European enterprises based on Crunchbase data, we identified 27 distinct roles and their respective interrelations in the domain. To validate the proposed value network, we conducted five expert interviews. Our results highlight the continuously growing importance of intermediaries in tourism. Furthermore, new technology players offer new opportunities for innovative services, creating high dynamism in the industry. Nonetheless, local entities, such as residents and communities, play a central role in European tourism and need to be included in experiences provided to tourists. Scholars and practitioners might use the results to identify disruptive actors and opportunities for innovation and niche creation. Additionally, the results can be used as a basis for further analysis of the ecosystem’s ongoing changes induced through technological advancements or external events such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
Are men and women in leadership roles different? How do the self-images of male and female leaders differ? Is there a linkage between leadership, gender and self-image? Based on a omprehensive overview of relevant theoretical concepts and scientific literature, the Leadership Tasks Survey was used for a self- assessment of 91 German leaders. The collected data was processed and statistically analyzed. The concepts of leadership, gender and self-image are strongly linked to each other. Differences exist between the self-images of men and women in leadership positions with women having the more negative, self-critical self- image. These differences were found to be statistically significant. Introduction; Literature Review; Research questions and methods; Empirical results; Conclusion; About the author; Bibliography
Equations of the form ?[?] = 0, ?: ? ⟶ ?̅ smooth, ?, ?̅ real Banach spaces are investigated with the aim of continuing the basic solution ?[0] = 0 with ? ′ [0] Fredholm operator to a solution curve ?[?(?)] = 0 with the implicit function theorem. If ? ′ [0] is surjective, then the transversality condition of the implicit function theorem can be satisfied in a straightforward way, yielding a regular solution curve, whereas otherwise the equation ?[?] = 0 has to be extended appropriately for reaching a surjective linearization accessible to the implicit function theorem. This extension process, implying in the first step the standard bifurcation theorem of simple bifurcation points, is continued arbitrarily, yielding a sequence of bifurcation results presumably being applicable to bifurcation points with finite degeneracy.
The system of undetermined coefficients of a bifurcation problem
?[?] = 0 in Banach spaces is investigated for proving the existence of families of solution curves by use of the implicit function theorem. The main theorem represents an Artin-Tougeron type result in the sense that approximation of order 2? ensures exact solutions agreeing up to order ? with the approximation
[13], [22]. Alternatively, it may be interpreted as Hensel’s Lemma in Banach spaces. In the spirit of [9] and [18], the required surjectivity condition is interpreted as a direct sum condition of order ? that allows for solving the remainder equation
with respect to graded subspaces derived from an appropriate filtration [24], [25]. In the direction of these subspaces, the determinant can be calculated in a finite dimensional setting, enabling the investigation of secondary global bifurcation phenomena by sign change of Brouwer’s degree [18]. The direct sum
condition seems to be a generalization of the direct sum condition introduced in [9].
The implicit function theorem delivers stability of ? leading coefficients [?̅1 , … , ??̅] with respect to perturbations of order 2? +1 and uniqueness in pointed wedges around the solution curves. Further, denoting by ?̅∞ the subset of arc space ?∞ with [?̅1 , … , ??̅] fixed, ?̅∞ is iteratively approximated by ?̅ 2?+? as ? → ∞. In addition, a lower bound of the Greenberg function ?(?) of a singularity is constructed by use of a step function obtained from ?-degree of different solution curves.
Finally, based on Kouchnirenko’s theorem [17] and an extension in [6], the results are applied to Newton-polygons where it is shown that the Milnor number of a singularity can be calculated by the sum of ?-degrees of corresponding solution curves. Simple ???-singularities are investigated in detail. The main theorem represents a version of strong implicit function theorem in Banach spaces, possibly comparable to theorems in [2]. Moreover, our aim is to extend the direct sum condition of order ? from [9] to certain topics in singularity and approximation theory. Generalizations to modules as well as specializations to polynomials seem to be promising.
