Precise forecasting of thermal loads is a critical factor for economic and efficient operation of district heating and cooling networks. If thermal loads are known with high accuracy in advance, use of renewable energies can be maximized, and – in combination with thermal storage units – fossil generation, in particular in peaking units, can be avoided. Machine learning has proven to be a powerful tool for time series forecasting, and has demonstrated significant advancements in recent years. This paper presents the scientific methodology and first results of the publicly funded research project “deepDHC”, which aims at a broad benchmarking of traditional and advanced machine learning methods for thermal load forecasting in district heating and cooling applications. The analysis covers autoregressive forecasting approaches, decision trees such as “adaptive boosting”, but also latest “deep learning” techniques such as the “long short-term memory” (LSTM) neural network. This work is based on data from the district heating network of the city of Ulm in Germany. First, different performance metrics for evaluating forecasting qualities are introduced. Second, approaches for data screening and results of a linear and non-linear correlation analysis are presented. Third, the machine learning tuning process is described. For thermal load forecasting, weather data are key input parameters. This work uses hourly weather forecasts from weather models provided by the German meteorological service. These weather data are updated automatically, and have been statistically corrected in order to represent very accurate point forecasts for up to ten days ahead. In addition, a user-friendly web interface has been developed for use by the district heating network operator. The performance of different machine-learning algorithms is compared based on 72 h heating load forecasts.
Punching is a wide-spread production process, applied when massive amounts of the ever-same cheap parts are needed. The punching process is sensitive to a multitude of parameters. Unfortunately, the precise dependencies are often unknown. A prerequisite for optimal, reproducible and transparent process alignment is the knowledge of how exactly parameters influence the quality of a punching part, which in turn requires a quantitative description of the quality of a part. We developed an optical inline monitoring system, which consists of a combined imaging and triangulation sensor as well as subsequent image processing. We show that it is possible to capture images of the cutting surface for every part within production. We automatically derive quality parameters using the example of the burnish height from 2D images. In addition, the 3D parameters are calculated and verified from the triangulation images. As an application, we show that the status of tool wear can be inferred by monitoring the burnish height, with immediate consequences for predictive maintenance. Although limited by slow images processing in our prototype, we conclude that connecting machine and process parameters with quality metrics in real time for every single part enables data-driven process modelling and ultimately the implementation of intelligent punching machines.
We study the efficient computation of power indices for weighted voting games using the paradigm of dynamic programming. We survey the state-of-the-art algorithms for computing the Banzhaf and Shapley–Shubik indices and point out how these approaches carry over to related power indices. Within a unified framework, we present new efficient algorithms for the Public Good index and a recently proposed power index based on minimal winning coalitions of the smallest size, as well as a very first method for computing the Johnston indices for weighted voting games efficiently. We introduce a software package providing fast C++ implementations of all the power indices mentioned in this article, discuss computing times, as well as storage requirements.
Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) is playing a vital role in the development of human life. Understanding and identifying the necessity of Functional Safety (FuSa) for automated driving systems (ADS) is the focus of this presentation.
Several assist systems like ACC, LDW is now in demand from vehicle user because of comfort and safety. Since current standards focus on systems that are controlled by humans it is very important to clarify which of the given regulations are appropriate to define a common safety management system for automated vehicles. Besides, it is necessary to point out the gaps and missing topics that have to be recorded in specifications to provide a safe operation of tomorrow's vehicles.
Highly automated driving systems perceive the necessity of implementing safety and security features. In the presentation, Automation level 3 or higher is considered for implementing safety including security. Additionally, the necessity of the FuSa for ADAS/ADS is established and gives a glimpse of the research aspect in this area.
The development of a safety case for an automated driving system (ADS) with highly automated driving (HAD) functions is a flourishing area of research. One of the research sections is considering ethics commission (EC) rules with Functional Safety (FuSa), Safety Of The Intended Functionality (SOTIF) and Cybersecurity for ADS. A new Method should be able to provide the evidence to build confidence and ensure the robustness of ADS. Pegasus has already presented an approach for the representation of the logical structure of safety argumentation but has fallen short of applying it by actually modelling the ethic rules (or other safety princples like NHTSA, UL4600, etc) into the structure and connecting them with a concrete ADS safety case. Moreover, the representation of atomic consideration of design principles and their interrelation with ethical rules is incapacitated. Therefore, an elaborate approach will be presented (based on the Pegasus method), to show the relation of Safety (FuSa, SOTIF, cybersecurity and others) with ethical aspects in the development of ADS vehicle and support to build a strong safety argumentation for an ADS safety case.
Firstly, a set of atomic claims from both ethical rules and ADS design and safety principles is generated. Secondly, based on goal structuring notation (GSN), a subsequent safety argumentation and evidence is demonstrated from the generated claims for a dedicated HAD transverse guidance funtion from the ethical aspect. Finally, it is shown how consulted claims reflect safety and how safety can fulfil the ethical goals for ADS.
The laser sintering of polymers is an additive manufacturing technology that is becoming increasingly established in the industrial environment. This study investigated the thickness‐ dependent permeation properties of laser‐sintered (LS) polymers as required to design and produce components with a special barrier performance to gaseous substances. Helium and oxygen permeation experiments were carried out on quenched and standard LS polyamide 12 (PA12) sheets generated with two, four, six, and eight layers at a constant powder layer thickness of 100 μm. The structural properties of the sheets were examined by differential scanning calorimetry, light microscopy, and X‐ray micro‐computed tomography. A reduction in thickness resulted in higher diffusion coefficients for both types of LS sheets. An explanation could be the large volume fraction of poorly sintered powder particles adhering to the surfaces and incomplete melting and low consolidation of the polymer at small thicknesses. The thickness‐dependency of the solubility coefficients was the opposite, especially for the standard LS sheets, which might be related to the larger pore volume in thicker sheets. As both effects compensated for each other, nearly constant permeation coefficients for all thicknesses were observed. The results provide further insights into different material characteristics of thin LS PA12 structures and offer new information on factors relevant to their solution and diffusion behavior.

This mixed-methods study aimed to investigate to what extent two-week device-supported cycle training and app-based fall risk assessment are feasible measures for fall prevention in older people living at home (N = 10). A questionnaire assessed participants’ motivation, and a fall risk score was calculated pre- and post-intervention. Semi-structured interviews with two experts were conducted retrospectively. The results revealed a high subjective motivation during the training and a slight reduction of the fall risk. Both the training and the assessment are feasible and well-received interventions with potential for technology-supported fall prevention.
A new, freely programmable, scalable control system for academic research purposes was developed. The intention was, to have a control unit capable of handling multiple PT1000 temperature sensors at reasonable accuracy and temperature range, as well as digital input signals and providing more powerful output signals at 230V AC than conventional control units. To take full advantage of the system, control-loops are run in real time. The whole system runs independently of a personal computer. The two on-board RS232 connectors allow to connect further units to use more sensors or actuators or to connect other laboratory equipment, as required. To allow usage for long-time experiments, systematically electronic components with low failure-in-time (FIT) rate have been chosen in order to achieve high life expectancy. This paper describes the third prototype, which now provides stable measurements, and an improvement in accuracy compared to the previous designs. A rough estimation about the expected mean time between failures is given. As test case, a thermal solar system to produce hot tap water and assist heating in a single-family house was implemented. The solar fluid pump was power-controlled and several temperatures at different points in the hydraulic system were measured and used in the control algorithms. The hardware design proved suitable to test several different control strategies and their corresponding algorithms for the thermal solar system.

Audio Feedback for Device-Supported Balance Training: Parameter Mapping and Influencing Factors
(2020)
Recent studies suggest that real-time auditory feedback is an effective method to facilitate motor learning. The evaluation of the parameter mapping (sound-to-movement mapping) is a crucial, yet frequently neglected step in the development of audio feedback. We therefore conducted two experiments to evaluate audio parameters with target finding exercises designed for balance training. In the first experiment with ten participants, five different audio parameters were evaluated on the X-axis (mediolateral movement). Following that, in a larger experiment with twenty participants in a two-dimensional plane (mediolateral and anterior-posterior movement), a basic and synthetic audio model was compared to a more complex audio model with musical characteristics. Participants were able to orient themselves and find the targets with the audio models. In the one-dimensional condition of experiment one, percussion sounds and synthetic sound wavering were the overall most effective audio parameters. In experiment two, the synthetic model was more effective and better evaluated by the participants. In general, basic sounds were more helpful than complex (musical) sound models. Musical abilities and age were correlated with certain exercise scores. Audio feedback is a promising approach for balance training and should be evaluated with patients. Preliminary evaluation of the respective parameter mapping is highly advisable.
In “concept for a new precise academic gripper” the mechanical aspects of the new gripper were presented [3]. In this paper, the idea is improved and expanded towards a clever control part. This paper mainly focuses on the functional ideas and the state of research concerning the imaging tasks. Experiment and intermediate results of the imaging process are discussed. Different approaches of skin colour detection in diverse colour spaces have been tested. Skin colour detection is investigated whether skin colour can be monitored to improve work safety in terms of functional safety. To enhance versatility, several ideas are combined to form a clever gripping device.
