Are status symbols a barrier to intrinsic equality within the organisation?
Quantitative research approach using an anonymous online survey developed and adapted to the research topic, which was published and accessible to economically active individuals with work experience.
This research highlights the potential negative impact of status symbols on an employee’s intrinsic equality and consequently employee motivation. The research provides value for organisations as it shows that they need to analyse how the perceived equality in their organisational environment is impacted by status symbols.
The widespread implementation of smart meters (SM) and the deployment of the advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) provide large amounts of fine-grained data on prosumers. Machine learning (ML) algorithms are used in different techniques, e.g. non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM), to extract useful information from collected data. However, the use of ML algorithms to gain insight on prosumer behavior and characteristics raises not only numerous technical but also legal concerns. This paper maps electricity prosumer concerns towards the AMI and its ML based analytical tools in terms of data protection, privacy and cybersecurity and conducts a legal analysis of the identified prosumer concerns within the context of the EU regulatory frameworks. By mapping the concerns referred to in the technical literature, the main aim of the paper is to provide a legal perspective on those concerns. The output of this paper is a visual tool in form of a table, meant to guide prosumers, utility, technology and energy service providers. It shows the areas that need increased attention when dealing with specific prosumer concerns as identified in the technical literature.
The first part of this chapter gives some theoretical background on interculturality. International hospitality is characterized by many factors, one of them being the fact that most people working
in this field travel a lot and travel a lot abroad. This leads to countless individual experiences, of which many are told and retold as anecdotes. However, as the name says, this is only anecdotal
knowledge. Anecdotal knowledge is knowledge based on own experiences, which comes with emotions, with authenticity and often with the personal satisfaction to have overcome a difficult situation. It will often liberally be generalized and, with the gut feeling of conviction be used as a tool to convince oneself, stating, “I really know!” The fact that one seems to master those experiences somehow can quickly make one feel qualified to talk seriously about this subject. The
essential difference between (individual) anecdotal knowledge and systematic knowledge, however, is that systematic knowledge is the documented, structured, and analyzed essence of many people. It relates to models and theory, to systematic and documented observation, to controlled reduction of complexity, and hence to the capacity to formulate hypotheses and predictions which
in turn can be verified repeatedly. Only this systematic type of scientific knowledge is used in this chapter. It might frustrate some long-time cherished anecdotal obviousnesses of a few readers. Sorry for this.
The rapidly developing concept of carsharing is an essential and scalable part of sustainable, multimodal mobility in urban environments. There is a clear need for carsharing operators to understand their users and how they use different transportation modes to intensify the development of carsharing and its positive impacts on the environment and urban cohabitation. We foster this understanding by analyzing usage data of carsharing in a medium-sized German city. We compare user groups based on individual characteristics and their carsharing usage behavior. We focus on a station-based two-way carsharing scheme and its relation to free-floating carsharing. Based on different clustering and segmentation approaches, we defined 20 particularly interesting user groups among the carsharing users and analyzed noticeable usage patterns. Additionally, we examined these partially overlapping user groups in the spatial dimension. With these results, we support research and operators in understanding carsharing customers and assessing users’ individual behavior.
Public fast charging infrastructure (FCI) is essential for the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs). To reach higher EV penetration, investments into the development of a comprehensive and widespread fast charging network are necessary. However, current investments in FCI are only profitable in specific locations resulting in a severe lack of deployments in most areas. The wish for rapid development of both, EVs and related charging opportunities, requires political support measures for FCI. This paper investigates various support measures regarding their contribution to a comprehensive expansion of FCI through profitability enhancement. We illustrate the impact of different support measures on the profitability of three different charging power categories at three different located charging sides along the German freeway. Besides the traffic volume, the profitability of FCI strongly depends on the location's surrounding charging facilities and population characteristics and decreases with increasing charging power. Currently available support measures such as investment subsidies or the exemption from the electricity tax do not contribute significantly to a widespread expansion of FCI. Changes in the demand charges have a higher potential to support nationwide investments in FCI.
The proposed contribution addresses the growing need for systematic and efficient development methods for assisted and automated driving features. Active Lane Departure Warning (ALDW) systems with correcting steering interventions are the specific object of this research. Due to NCAP requirements ALDW systems are widespread in modern cars, but often lack drivers’ approval, as several related studies have shown. Causes are assumed to lie in unspecified attribute requirement metrics and missing target values. Based on typical ALDW usage scenarios on different road types, such as freeway, highway and country road, an advanced catalogue of subjective evaluation criteria was developed
and deployed in a comprehensive proband study with experts involving four distinct ALDW equipped passenger cars. Characteristic driving maneuvers with the intention to provoke controlled ALDW interventions complemented the subjective assessment with objective data. Statistically correlating derived objective key performance indicators with the respective subjective ratings established a link between drivers’ impressions and measurable system behavior. These dependencies allowed the conclusion of target values for a certain range of desired subjective ALDW characteristics fulfilling the initial requisites.
