As-Cast Ausferritic Ductile Iron
- It is well established that ductile iron (DI) with an ausferritic matrix shows superior mechanical properties compared to the conventional ferritic/pearlitic cast irons. Due to its excellent strength and toughness combination, ausferritic DI can compete successfully in the steel and aluminum markets. The goal of this work was to develop a process to produce as-cast ausferritic DI without a subsequent heat treatment. DI keel blocks were poured in our metal casting laboratory. After a premature shakeout at high temperature, the castings were cooled in air until the temperature range for the ausferritic transformation, and then introduced in an insulating medium holding them during the ausferritic reaction. Several holding temperature-time combinations and their effect on microstructure and properties were investigated. With the appropriate combination, the as-cast ausferritic DI satisfied the requirements of ASTM A897/897M- 06 (2011) for ADI. Steering knuckles were also produced and their mechanical properties evaluated matching the ADIIt is well established that ductile iron (DI) with an ausferritic matrix shows superior mechanical properties compared to the conventional ferritic/pearlitic cast irons.
