Leading edge serrations are well-known for their aeroacoustic potential in reducing aerofoil-turbulence interaction noise and are also associated with certain aerodynamic advantages. To prepare leading edge serrations for industrial application, two obstacles remain to be addressed. First is a combined analysis of the aeroacoustic and the aerodynamic performance of leading edge serrations to develop optimum designs. Second is the need to examine the transferability of the known effects of leading edge serrations from a single aerofoil to full rotors, which are considered to be the final area of application.
This thesis aims to assist in the transfer of a well-investigated aerofoil with serrated leading edges from the rigid to the rotating domain. With this purpose, a single aerofoil type is selected and thoroughly analysed, experimentally and numerically, to generate a reliable data basis for aerodynamic performance and noise reduction capability. Aside from gathering information on the overall performance, the spatial distribution of the noise sources is localised, and the spectral composition of the noise reduction is found to follow a clearly defined scaling law. Aerodynamically, generated vortices are found to be responsible for a complex three-dimensional separation mechanism of the leading edge serrations, causing a delay of stall.
The generated data basis is then used to design low-pressure axial fans of minimum complexity by keeping the initially chosen aerofoil type. The experimentally identified noise reduction mechanisms for the serrated axial fans are found to be more diverse than the single aerofoil and highly dependent on the inflow conditions and the operation point of the fan. A highly similar pattern for the spectral scaling of the noise reduction supports the finding that at optimum operation conditions, the previously identified noise reduction mechanisms for the single aerofoils are transferable to the rotating domain. On the other hand, additional aerodynamic mechanisms are found to dominate the noise reduction for the instability region of the fan, also contributing to reduced blade-to-blade interaction effects. Moreover, the blade-tip leakage flow is altered by delaying the development of coherent structures.
The next step towards a more general description of the aeroacoustic and aerodynamic dependencies is developing a comprehensive model based on artificial neural networks. This model allows a combined analysis of the aerodynamic and acoustic performance of rotors with serrated leading edges and shows an accurate prediction of the overall performance and the spectral composition of the radiated noise. It also enables the development of multi-objective optima for serration designs and motivates further studies into the generalisability of the observed trends. Furthermore, the developed model represents a feasible tool to create tailored serration designs for maximum efficiency in both aeroacoustics and aerodynamics, contributing to the development of future low-noise fans and rotating machinery.

This paper deals with the design of a micro-scale ORC plant for teaching and research including the development of an automated control concept. The aim is to provide a safe and environmentally acceptable micro-scale heat engine, which can be developed, implemented and used in university labs for the education of students as well as for small research projects. The test rig allows the support of several learning outcomes on a multi-disciplinary level particularly for the implementation and simulation of small power systems. Special attention was given to the organic working fluid characteristics and its selection process. In addition to the above-mentioned performance goals, favourable safety properties and low global warming potential were decisive in the selection of the novel organic fluid called 3M™ Novec™ 649. The performance and the fluid behaviour of Novec 649 in a micro-scale power cycle are of major interest and the research goal for the test rig presented in this paper. Due to the expected power output of 1 kW, a scroll expander was chosen as the generator drive for the micro plant. In order to design the major parts of the ORC, the thermodynamic simulation software EBSILON®Professional was used. The supply temperature was set to 140 °C. As a result of the simulation, feasible expander inlet pressures spread from 5.5 bar to 8.5 bar. This leads to thermal efficiencies of the ORC in the order of 5 %. Adding a recuperator to the cycle system decreases the operating pressure range but in the end, the thermal efficiency can be increased by 1.5 %-points up to 6.2 %. Finally, an automated control concept is introduced, where the pump is controlled via the fill level measurement system.

Artificial intelligence methods based on machine learning or artificial neural networks have become indispensable in camera-based driver assistance systems, and also represent an essential building block for future autonomous driving. However, the great successes of these evaluation methods in environment perception and also driving planning are accompanied by equally great challenges in the validation and verification of these systems. One of the essential aspects for this is the required guaranteed safety of the functions under mass production conditions of the vehicles. This article explains this point of view using a detailed example from the field of camera-based driver assistance systems: the determination of inspection limits at the end of the production line. The camera is one of the most important sensor modalities for vehicle environment sensing and as such, the quality of the camera systems plays a key role in the safety argumentation of the overall system. Several illustrative application examples (role of simulations, calibration, influence of the windshield) will be presented. The basic ideas presented can be well transferred to the other sensor modalities (lidar, radar, ToF, etc.). The investigations/evidence show that doubts are allowed whether or how fast autonomous driving on level L4/5 will take hold as robotaxis or – even more challenging – in private ownership on a larger scale.
We present an experimental technique that allows the simultaneous spatial imaging and spectral analysis of falling droplets that exhibit lasing. Single droplet investigations serve as, among other purposes, a preliminary study for spray and combustion researchers. The described setup provides a valuable tool for the evaluation of microdroplet investigations with laser-spectroscopic techniques that rely on laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) or similar spectroscopical phenomena. The emphasis is that both spatial and spectral information are obtained from single-shot images of a falling droplet. Furthermore, combining spatial imaging and a spatially resolving optical multichannel analyzer makes a pointwise rastering of the droplets spectrum possible. This allows for the (almost) unambiguous determination of sources of influence on the spectrum of these droplets-such as geometrical distortion and lasing, nondissolved tracer lumps, and similar phenomena. Although the focus is on the experimental technique itself, we supplement detailed studies of lasing in falling microdroplets. These results were obtained with the aim of developing a system for measuring temperature distributions in droplets and sprays. In the light of these results the practice of calibrating a droplets spectrum by use of a bulk liquid sample needs to be critically reviewed.

This paper presents a mobile approach of integrating tangible user feedback in today’s virtual TV studio productions. We describe a tangible multitouch planning system, enabling a single user to prepare and customize scene flow and settings. Users can view and interact with virtual objects by using a tangible user interface on a capacitive multitouch surface. In a 2D setting created TV scenes are simultaneously rendered as separate view using a production/target renderer in 3D. Thereby the user experiences a closer reproduction of a final production and set assets can be reused. Subsequently, a user can arrange scenes on a timeline while maintaining different versions/sequences. The system consists of a tablet and a workstation, which does all application processing and rendering. The tablet is just an interface connected via wireless LAN.
Four Metamorphosis States in a Distributed Virtual (TV) Studio: Human, Cyborg, Avatar, and Bot
(2013)
The major challenge in virtual studio technology is the interaction between the actor and virtual objects. Within a distributed live production, two locally separated markerless tracking systems where used simultaneously alongside a virtual studio. The production was based on a fully tracked actor, cyborg (half actor, half graphics), avatar, and a bot. All participants could interact and throw a virtual disc. This setup is compared and mapped to Milgram’s continuum and technical challenges are described.

Preface

Cyberspatial audio applications are distinguished from the broad range of spatial audio applications in a number of important ways that help to focus this review. Most significant is that cyberspatial audio is most often designed to be responsive to user inputs. In contrast to non-interactive auditory displays, cyberspatial auditory displays typically allow active exploration of the virtual environment in which users find themselves. Thus, at least some portion of the audio presented in a cyberspatial environment must be selected, processed, or otherwise rendered with minimum delay relative to user input. Besides the technological demands associated with realtime delivery of spatialized sound, the type and quality of auditory experiences supported are also very different from those associated with displays that support stationary sound localization.
We give an enumeration of possible problem frames, based on domain characteristics, and comment on the usefulness of the obtained frames. In particular, we investigate problem domains and their characteristics in detail. This leads to fine-grained criteria for describing problem domains. As a result, we identify a new type of problem domain and come up with integrity conditions for developing useful problem frames. Taking a complete enumeration of possible problem frames (with at most three problem domains, of which only one is constrained) as a basis, we find 8 new problem frames, 7 of which we consider as useful in practical software development.
Virtual (tv) studios gain much more acceptance through improvements in computer graphics and camera tracking. Still commercial studios cannot have full interaction between actors and virtual scene because actors data are not completely digital available as well as the feedback for actors is still not sufficient. Markerless full body tracking might revolutionize virtual studio technology as it allows better interaction between real and virtual world. This article reports about using a markerless actor tracking in a virtual studio with a tracking volume of nearly 40 cubic meter enabling up to three actors within the green box. The tracking is used for resolving the occlusion between virtual objects and actors so that the Tenderer can output automatically a mask for virtual objects in the foreground in case the actor is behind. It is also used for triggering functions scripted within the Tenderer engine, which are attached to virtual objects, starting any kind of action (e.g., animation). Last but not least the system is used for controlling avatars within the virtual set. All tracking and rendering is done within a studio frame rate of 50 Hz with about 3 frames delay. The markerless actor tracking within virtual studios is evaluated by experts using an interview approach. The statistical evaluation is based on a questionnaire.
Live video broadcasting requires a multitude of professional expertise to enable multi-camera productions. Robotic systems allow the automation of common and repeated tracking shots. However, predefined camera shots do not allow quick adjustments when required due to unpredictable events. We introduce a modular automated robotic camera control and video switch system, based on fundamental cinematographic rules. The actors' positions are provided by a markerless tracking system. In addition, sound levels of actors' lavalier microphones are used to analyse the current scene. An expert system determines appropriate camera angles and decides when to switch from one camera to another. A test production was conducted to observe the developed prototype in a live broadcast scenario and served as a video-demonstration for an evaluation.
