The Chylla–Haase polymerization reactor is widely accepted as a benchmark process for the evaluation of control strategies for batch reactors. In this contribution a control concept based on Exact I/O-Linearization is proposed and compared to a conventional cascade control structure. In order to adapt the exact linearization control strategy to various polymerization products and batch conditions, an advanced probabilistic inference algorithm (Sigma-Point Kalman Filter) is applied and investigated. Sigma-Point Kalman Filters have the major improvement of simplified implementation compared to local linearization methods (i.e. Extended Kalman Filter) because no analytical Jacobians are required. Stochastic simulation studies are introduced and show the effectiveness, accuracy and benefit of the control concept. Within several scenarios a satisfying robustness against structural errors in the underlying model equations for the nonlinear control law and the inference algorithm is demonstrated. Furthermore it is pointed out, that with little effort in reassembling the plant design, control performance can be improved significantly.

Many different cell types are able to migrate by formation of a thin actin-based cytoskeletal extension. Recently, it became evident that this extension consists of two distinct substructures, designated lamellipodium and lamellum, which differ significantly in their kinetic and kinematic properties as well as their biochemical composition. We developed a stochastic two-dimensional computer simulation that includes chemical reaction kinetics, G-actin diffusion, and filament transport to investigate the formation of growing actin networks in migrating cells. Model parameters were chosen based on experimental data or theoretical considerations. In this work, we demonstrate the system's ability to form two distinct networks by self-organization. We found a characteristic transition in mean filament length as well as a distinct maximum in depolymerization flux, both within the first 1-2 microm. The separation into two distinct substructures was found to be extremely robust with respect to initial conditions and variation of model parameters. We quantitatively investigated the complex interplay between ADF/cofilin and tropomyosin and propose a plausible mechanism that leads to spatial separation of, respectively, ADF/cofilin- or tropomyosin-dominated compartments. Tropomyosin was found to play an important role in stabilizing the lamellar actin network. Furthermore, the influence of filament severing and annealing on the network properties is explored, and simulation data are compared to existing experimental data.

The study examined whether the extent of negative body-related thoughts and emotions evoked by looking in a mirror can be changed by cognitive-behavioural body image therapy (BIT) and whether any remaining cognitive and affective responses dropped faster after the treatment. Females with eating disorders (n = 17) looked in a mirror for 40 minutes under standardised conditions before and after BIT. A control group (CG) (n = 24) was also exposed to their own bodies twice. Cognitive and affective reactions were assessed four times during the session. Hierarchical Linear Modelling revealed that among eating-disordered patients, the entrance levels of negative thoughts and feelings were lower at post compared to pre-BIT, whereas they remained stable in the CG. The extent of reduction of the remaining body image distress was not changed after the treatment. BIT seems to be a potent treatment of negative emotions and cognitions in an in vivo situation.

Striving for smaller losses in turbomachinery has led to many advancements in the design of seals. Modern sealing concepts such as brush seals hold a great potential to increase the efficiency of both flight engines and stationary turbines. At the same time, in order to maintain stable operating conditions of the rotor, swirl-induced forces must be kept at a minimum in the sealing channels. Therefore, the influence of the permeable and flexible bristle pack of brush seals on the flow around the rotor surface must be known. In this paper the swirl flow in the cavities of two different seal geometries is studied experimentally and numerically. A conventional three-tooth labyrinth serves as a reference. A second seal arrangement with a bristle pack upstream of two teeth is compared with the reference labyrinth. The swirl is evaluated experimentally from total and static pressure measurements in various axial and circumferential positions. Additionally, the axial swirl distribution is calculated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Here, the numerical model of the brush seal is based on the porous medium approach and is calibrated using the experimental values of the leakage and the bristle clearance by adjusting the thickness of the bristle pack. The calibrated CFD model is then used to study the impact of the brush seal on the swirl component of the sealing flow. The observed significant decrease of the swirl by the brush seal shows good agreement with the experimental data. The impact of changes in bristle pack clearance on the swirl is also investigated and compared with experimental evidence. The aim is to show that the brush seals have a natural tendency to interrupt seal swirl. They can therefore be used for swirl control in order to create a beneficial impact on the dynamic stability of turbomachines.
Vitaler Wissensaustausch

We give an enumeration of possible problem frames, based on domain characteristics, and comment on the usefulness of the obtained frames. In particular, we investigate problem domains and their characteristics in detail. This leads to fine-grained criteria for describing problem domains. As a result, we identify a new type of problem domain and come up with integrity conditions for developing useful problem frames. Taking a complete enumeration of possible problem frames (with at most three problem domains, of which only one is constrained) as a basis, we find 8 new problem frames, 7 of which we consider as useful in practical software development.
Problem frames are patterns for analyzing, structuring, and characterizing software development problems. This paper presents a formal metamodel for problem frames expressed in UML class diagrams and using the formal specification notation OCL. That metamodel clarifies the nature of the different syntactical elements of problem frames, as well as the relations between them. It provides a framework for syntactical analysis and semantic validation of newly defined problem frames, and it prepares the ground for tool support for the problem frame approach.
We present a process to develop secure software with an extensive pattern-based security requirements engineering phase. It supports identifying and analyzing conflicts between different security requirements. In the design phase, we proceed by selecting security software components that achieve security requirements. The process enables software developers to systematically identify, analyze, and finally realize security requirements using security software components. We illustrate our approach by a lawyer agency software example.
