A mandatory course for master students in engineering T2 - Creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship for engineering education excellence : proceedings of the 46th SEFI Annual Conference 2018, Copenhagen, Denmark N2 - Undergraduate students in engineering often have little exposure to the world of scientific publishing and the culture of sharing research work. While the beneficial exchange between research and teaching is well promoted, while the benefits of conference participation for students have already been surveyed and while courses on scientific writing are readily available, the concept of mini-conferences as part of the curriculum combines all three aspects into one. Therefore, the course "Engineering Conferences" was developed and installed as a mandatory part of a master program for engineering students. The idea is to go beyond simply teaching the standards of academic writing and skills for using scientific publications. By using a learner-centered approach, the students are engaged in typical activities around an active attendance of a real conference. Based on their bachelor thesis, they write a paper complying with common academic standards, submit the paper and review submissions of their fellow students. They also produce a poster and defend their work in a poster session held publicly on campus. This contribution is based on the experience from the first four terms teaching the course. It explains the didactic rationale behind the concept and individual teaching modules, it comprises the collection of useful resources for teaching and organizing scientific publishing and it includes the consequences drawn from course evaluation results. This results in an increasing demand for mobility solutions while it is also worldwide aimed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This paper summarizes the results of a comparative study concerning the greenhouse gas emissions (based on carbon footprint) caused by alternative urban passenger transportation systems. The emissions for the vehicles and their infrastructure are analyszed over the entire life cycle from manufacturing up to their end of life. An existing cable car sytem in La Paz, Bolivia was analysed and evaluated in comparison to other modes of transportation such as small busses, large busses and a tram. According to the system definitions and the considered balance framework the study shows that beside the use of the systems the materials and the manufacturing as well as the infrastructure have a significant impact on the total emissions over the life cycle. To put focus on the „true and real“ impacts to the society it is preferable to consider the measurement results in total absolute emissions. It allows for an evaluation of the individual’s gaze and other related information. There is a wide variety of application areas for eye tracking, however the usage in engineeringindustry is still limited. This paper presents a case study for the use of eye tracking in a testingstation for electrical circuit breakers. The case study aims to evaluate the measurement and analysispossible with the Tobii wearable eye tracking system. From the case study, possibilities, limitationsand considerations for eye tracking in industrial settings are identified and discussed. The paperconcludes that while eye tracking can be used to effectively capture and visualize insightfulinformation, it faces major challenges related to subjectivity in analysis and labour intensiveness. At the same time, development cycles are becoming ever shorter and the requirements for safety, conformity and sustainability ever higher. In this article, a meta-analysis is carried out on the possibility of integrating sustainability aspects as requirements in a systems engineering approach and the differences are discussed. Methodology/approach - A systematic literature search of articles in ScienceDirect between 2016 and 2023 is carried out. The keywords are sustainability and system engineering incl. synonyms. In a further step, the papers are screened for their relevance to product service systems and the relevance for the purpose. Findings – To address sustainability in complex technical systems, a holistic, model-based approach is required to ensure that sustainability aspects are considered. By using frameworks and methods such as macPro² and SysLM, requirements and indicators for sustainability can be integrated into the development phase, whereas currently only the environmental dimension is usually considered via resource and energy indicators. Research limitations/implications – In order to achieve a complete picture, additional databases must be considered and research results from ongoing projects must be awaited.
