While the properties of electro-acoustic sources can be well represented by advanced loudspeaker formats with high resolution, the complex, time-variant behavior of natural acoustic sources such as speakers, singers or musical instruments is not in any way considered by current techniques for acoustical simulation and auralization. In the talk, we will present measurement results of the sound power and directivity of natural acoustic sound sources and their dependence on pitch and dynamic level, as well as measurements of typical movements of the source during musical performances. We will demonstrate the physical and perceptual relevance of these effects both in the direct field and in room acoustical environments based on a technical and perceptual evaluation, and discuss new approaches to include these effects in numerical simulations. To provide such a recording, the sound field of an 18-channel loudspeaker orchestra fed by anechoic recordings of a chamber orchestra was captured in two rooms with nine different receivers. In addition, impulse responses were recorded for each sound source and receiver. The anechoic audio signals, the full loudspeaker orchestra recordings and all measured impulse responses are available with open access in the SOFA 2.1 (AES69-2022) format. The system provides a multichannel live audio transmission from which a head-related signal with approximated interaural time and level differences can be derived and played via headphones, head tracking, and a corresponding rendering software. The latter is mainly calculating imperceptible interpolation between channel pairs during head movements. This contribution evaluates the potential of this format for the creation of virtual acoustic envi- ronments. Based on the technical realization of a 16-channel MTB array with omnidirectional diffuse field-corrected electret condenser microphone capsules, the plausibility of 8 and 16-channel recordings was tested against a physical sound source. Furthermore, the sound quality of the pseudobinaural rendering was assessed based on different items of the Spatial Audio Quality Inventory (SAQI) compared to a true dynamic binaural reference. The results show that the overall plausibility of the MTB signal with optimal interpolation is close to the reference. Even if there are small differences with respect to tone color and spatial sound source attributes, the degree of externalization and even the perceived source elevation were, despite the absence of pinna cues, well comparable to the true binaural reference. Promoting whole, building strategies that employ passive measures with energy efficient systems and technologies using renewable energy, became a European political strategy since the publication of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive recast in May 2010 by the European Parliament and Council. Designing successful NZEBs however, represents a challenge since the definitions are yet generic assessment method and monitoring approach are under development and the literature is relatively scarce about the best sets of solutions for different typologies and climates likely to deliver an actual and reliable performance in terms of energy balance (consumed vs generated) on a cost-effective basis. Beside this, the lessons learned from already built NZEBs examples are relatively scarce. The authors of this paper, who are participants in the IEA SHC Task 40-ECBCS Annex 52, “Towards Net Zero Energy Solar Buildings”, are willing to share insights from on-going research work on some best practice leading NZEBs residential buildings. Although there is no standard approach for designing a Net Zero-Energy Building (there are many different possible combinations of passive and efficient active measures, utility equipment and on-site energy generation technologies able to achieve the net-zero energy performance), a close examination of the chosen strategies and the relative performance indicators of the selected case studies reveal that it is possible to achieve zero-energy performance using well known strategies adjusted accordingly to balance climate driven-demand for space heating/cooling, lighting, ventilation and others energy uses with climate-driven supply from renewable energy resources. MoO3-coated alumina was used as the support, providing both high specific surface area and strongly interacting sites for the deposition of the active metals. A bulk Cu/Co ratio of ~2 was found to be most suitable in terms of activity and product distribution. Surface enrichment of Mo for all samples was observed by XPS, which significantly influenced the performance of the catalysts. Mo was found to be both a structural and a chemical promoter. Strong metal–support interactions were further achieved by modification of alumina with magnesia. With 12 wt% Mg incorporated, the catalysts showed 40% total oxygenate selectivity including 11% selectivity to ethanol. T1 - Results of airborne measurements in the plume near and far from the 2014 Bardarbunga-Holuhraun eruption T2 - Geophysical Research Abstracts: EGU General Assembly 2015 N2 - The Volcanic Ash Research (VAR) group is focused on airborne measurement of ash contamination to support safe air travel. In relations to the recent eruption, the group measured ash and several gaseous species in the plume 10-300 km from the volcano. The eruption emitted ash turned out to be mostly in the fine aerosol range (much less than 10 micrometers in diameter). Our highest measured concentrations were lower than 1 mg/m3 indicating that commercial air traffic was not threatened (greater than 2 mg/m3) by the ash contamination. But we measured sulfur dioxide (SO2 ) up to 90 mg/m3, which presented a potentially dangerous pollution problem. However, airborne measurements indicate that the sulfur concentration decays (probably due to scavenging) as the plume is carried by the wind from the volcano, which limits the area of immediate danger to the public. Here we present size distribution for particulate matter collected during flights, near and far from the crater at various times. The particle data is then compared with simultaneously collected sulfur dioxide data and the rate of decay of is estimated. Sulfur and particle concentration variations with height in the far plume are presented. Some airborne measurements for H2S, NO, NO2 and CO2 will also be presented. This includes correlation matrices for simultaneous measurements of these gases and comparison to National Air Quality Standards and background values. For realtime computer applications such as games, it is essential to represent shadows as accurate as possible. Also, various tv stations work with virtual studio systems instead of real studio sets. Especially for those systems, a realistic impression of the rendered and mixed scene is important. One challenge, hence, is the creation of a natural shadow impression. This paper presents the results of an empirical study to compare the performance and quality of different shadow mapping methods. For this test, a prototype studio renderer was developed. A percentage closer filter (pcf) with a number of specific resolutions is used to minimize the aliasing issue. More advanced algorithms which generate smooth shadows like the percentage closer soft shadow (pcss) method as well as the variance shadow maps (vsm) method are analysed. Different open source apis are used to develop the virtual studio renderer, giving the benefit of permanent enhancement. The Ogre 3D graphic engine is used to implement the rendering system, benefiting from various functions and plugins. The transmission of the tracking data is accomplished with the vrpn server/client and the Intersense api. The different shadow algorithms are compared in a virtual studio environment which also casts real shadows and thus gives a chance for a direct comparison throughout the empirical user study. The aim of this article is to evaluate the effectiveness of using a Myo control armband and the Kinect 2 for recognition of gestures in order to interact with virtual objects in a weather report scenario. The Myo armband has an inertial measurement unit and is able to read electrical activity produced by skeletal muscles, which can be recognized as gestures, which are trained by machine learning. A Kinect sensor was used to build up a dataset which contains motion recordings of 8 different gestures and was also build up by a gesture training machine learning algorithm. Both input methods, the Kinect 2 and the Myo armband, were evaluated with the same interaction patterns in a user study, which allows a direct comparison and reveals benefits and limits of each technique. Workshop der GI-Fachgruppe VR/AR N2 - In this paper we propose an integrated immersive augmented reality solution for a software tool supporting spacecraft design and verification. The spacecraft design process relies on expertise in many domains, such as thermal and structural engineering. The various subsystems of a spacecraft are highly interdependent and have differing requirements and constraints. In this context, interactive visualizations play an important role in making expert knowledge accessible. Recent immersive display technologies offer new ways of presenting and interacting with computer-generated content. Possibilities and challenges for spacecraft configuration employing these technologies are explored and discussed. A user interface design for an application using the Microsoft HoloLens is proposed. To this end, techniques for selecting a spacecraft component and manipulating its position and orientation in 3D space are developed and evaluated. Thus, advantages and limitations of this approach to spacecraft configuration are revealed and discussed. N2 - Field sprayers have nozzles mounted along a spray boom that distribute a mixture of a crop protection agent (CPA) and a carrier liquid, usually water. Since the nozzles apply only a single CPA mixture and often cannot be controlled individually, application is not demand-oriented, which can result in locally insufficient, excessive, or non-optimal CPA application. This paper presents a laboratory model of a newly developed high-speed dosing unit for mixing three CPAs with a carrier liquid, enabling individual plant treatment using only the minimally required amount of CPA. The system operates independently of the carrier liquid’s hydraulic system, responds rapidly, and provides extremely accurate dosing. Based on an application map containing crop status and GPS position, the required application volume, timing, position, and CPA type are determined in an ISOBUS terminal and transmitted to a control unit that actuates the dosing unit. In addition to the newly developed hardware and control system, initial test bench results are presented. KW - Interview KW - Agilität KW - Digitale Lehre Y1 - 2017 UR - http://hochschulradio.de/insider-am-freitag-10-november/ PB - Hochschule Düsseldorf CY - Düsseldorf ER - TY - JOUR A1 - Bayer, Markus A1 - Pabst, Andrea T1 - Heroes and victims: economies of entitlement after violent pasts JF - Peacebuilding KW - FBSK_Webseite Y1 - 2018 U6 - https://doi.org/10.1080/21647259.2017.1303868 N1 - The research for the article was conducted as part of the project ‘Nonviolent Resistance and Democratic Consolidation’ funded by the German Research Foundation. We present a structured analysis of the documentation and development requirements in the ISO 27001 standard. Moreover, we investigate to what extent existing security requirements engineering approaches fulfill these requirements. We developed relations between these approaches and the ISO 27001 standard using a conceptual framework originally developed for comparing security requirements engineering methods. The relations include comparisons of important terms, techniques, and documentation artifacts. In addition, we show practical applications of our results. The problem is even more complex for cloud computing systems, because of the international distribution, huge amounts of processed data, and a large number of stakeholders that own or process the data. Approaches exist to deal with parts of the problem, but they are isolated from each other. We present an integrated method for elicitation of legal requirements. A cloud computing online banking scenario illustrates the application of our methods. The running example deals with the problem of storing personal information in the cloud and based upon the BDSG (German Federal Data Protection Act). We describe the structure of the online banking cloud system using an existing pattern-based approach. The elicited information is further refined and processed into functional requirements for software development. Moreover, our method covers the analysis of security-relevant concepts such as assets and attackers particularly with regard to laws. The requirements artifacts then serve as inputs for existing patterns for the identification of laws relevant for the online banking cloud system. Finally, our method helps to systematically derive functional as well as security requirements that realize the previously identified laws.
