T1 - The democratic quality of political depictions in fictional TV entertainment. A comparative content analysis of the political dramaBorgenand the journalistic magazineBerlin direkt
JF - Communications
N2 - AbstractThe quality of political reporting in the news media is a focal point of communication research. Politics, however, is not only conveyed via traditional sources of information, but via fictional sources. In particular, political dramas (e. g., The West Wing, Borgen) enjoy great popularity and are often acknowledged for their realistic depiction of politics. Still, little is known about the democratic quality of such fictional depictions. This paper aims to fill the gap by contrasting the depiction of politics in the fictional TV series Borgen with political reporting in a traditional TV magazine (Berlin direkt). The comparative content analysis is based on ten issues that are covered in both formats and focuses on the quality criteria of relevance, pluralism, and democratic discourse norms. Findings show no significant differences between Borgen and Berlin direkt for any of the three criteria, clearly indicating that fictional TV series can offer the same content quality as political reporting.

T1 - A smart measuring system for intelligent data acquisition in steel plants
T2 - METEC & 4th ESTAD 2019, European Steel Technology and Application Day, CCD Congress Center Düsseldorf, 24-28 June 2019
N2 - Sensing and acquiring reliable physical values are the fundamentals, not only for a predictive maintenance or quality assessment, but especially for big data analysis and sophisticated Industry 4.0 applications. In steel plants, physical values are distributed over the complete process chain of steel making while the environmental conditions are harsh with respect to high temperature, aggressive fluids, water, shock and dust. These conditions render the use of electronic devices focusing a consumer market impossible. The developed self-contained smart measuring system presented in this paper survives in harsh environments and is composed of small-sized modules providing miscellaneous functionalities. The high degree of modularity in hard-and software facilitates a cost-effective adaptation to many applications, like vibration monitoring, temperature logging or torque measurement. Different onboard measurement components are available yet, namely high sensitive bridge amplifiers for strain measurements, accelerometers, gyroscopes, orientation-, temperature- and humidity sensors as well as an unique system identification. A communication module enables wireless transmission of the acquired data via Bluetooth or NFC online. Moreover, different power supply features are supported by the power module: Ultra-low power modes for long-life battery use, recharging of lithium cells, and an inductive power supply for wireless power transfer for applications with moving or rotating components. The heart of the system is a powerful ARM based microcontroller which enables an intelligent analysis of the data in situ. This is especially important where data size and complexity is the relevant factor for example in area-wide sensor networks.

T1 - Evaluation of low cost and mid cost sensors for fine particulate matter at urban sites
T2 - Geophysical Research Abstracts: EGU General Assembly 2019
N2 - High ambient air concentrations of fine particulate matter are a problem in many European cities, especially in traffic loaded street canyons. Therefore, the introduction of traffic restricted or traffic reduced areas is discussed as a countermeasure in several towns. However, at that point it is not always clear, in what extent the restriction of traffic in presently overloaded streets causes the exceeding of limit values in other areas of the town after the redirection of the traffic. Presently this cannot be recorded appropriately, when the concentrations of fine particulate matter are monitored only at rarely distributed single points by the official measurement systems of the environmental state agencies.
On the other hand, meanwhile there are low cost and mid cost sensors for the measurement of fine particulate matter available, which enable the parallel monitoring with many measurement systems in an extended area of the town. By this way, the effect of traffic restrictions on the distribution of fine particulate matter in the city can potentially be observed. However, at this point the question arises, how reliable the results are, which are delivered by the low and mid cost sensors for fine particulate matter. For this reason different low cost and mid cost sensors have been evaluated for this study and intercompared with certified reference measurement systems for fine particulate matter. The study comprised the sensors SDS011 (Nova Fitness), which is in use already for several citizen science projects in Germany, SPS30 (Sensirion), OPC-R1 (Alphasense), OPC-N2 (Alphasense) and OPC-N3 (Alphasense).
This study was performed at urban sites in Düsseldorf (Germany) for several weeks and covered different traffic loads and different meteorological situations, in order to get representative results. As atmospheric humidity can influence the measurement results, the humidity was measured in parallel to the fine particulate matter. It could be shown that the validity of the measurement results of fine particulate matter could be improved, when the parallel readings of the humidity were taken into account.

T1 - Investigation of the α-pinene photooxidation by OH in the atmospheric simulation chamber SAPHIR
JF - Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics
N2 - Abstract. The photooxidation of the most abundant monoterpene, α-pinene, by the hydroxyl radical (OH) was investigated at atmospheric concentrations in the atmospheric simulation chamber SAPHIR. Concentrations of nitric oxide (NO) were below 120 pptv. Yields of organic oxidation products are determined from measured time series giving values of 0.11±0.05, 0.19±0.06, and 0.05±0.03 for formaldehyde, acetone, and pinonaldehyde, respectively. The pinonaldehyde yield is at the low side of yields measured in previous laboratory studies, ranging from 0.06 to 0.87. These studies were mostly performed at reactant concentrations much higher than observed in the atmosphere. Time series of measured radical and trace-gas concentrations are compared to results from model calculations applying the Master Chemical Mechanism (MCM) 3.3.1. The model predicts pinonaldehyde mixing ratios that are at least a factor of 4 higher than measured values. At the same time, modeled hydroxyl and hydroperoxy (HO2) radical concentrations are approximately 25 % lower than measured values. Vereecken et al. (2007) suggested a shift of the initial organic peroxy radical (RO2) distribution towards RO2 species that do not yield pinonaldehyde but produce other organic products. Implementing these modifications reduces the model–measurement gap of pinonaldehyde by 20 % and also improves the agreement in modeled and measured radical concentrations by 10 %. However, the chemical oxidation mechanism needs further adjustment to explain observed radical and pinonaldehyde concentrations. This could be achieved by adjusting the initial RO2 distribution, but could also be done by implementing alternative reaction channels of RO2 species that currently lead to the formation of pinonaldehyde in the model.

T1 - Possibilities, Limitations and Considerations for Eye Tracking in Industrial Environments: Experience from a Case Study
T2 - International Conference on Competitive Manufacturing (COMA 19) proceedings : 30 January 2019-1 February 2019, Stellenbosch, South Africa
N2 - Eye tracking is a measurement technique for determining the orientation and viewing direction of an individual’s eyes. It allows for an evaluation of the individual’s gaze and other related information. There is a wide variety of application areas for eye tracking, however the usage in engineeringindustry is still limited. This paper presents a case study for the use of eye tracking in a testingstation for electrical circuit breakers. The case study aims to evaluate the measurement and analysispossible with the Tobii wearable eye tracking system. From the case study, possibilities, limitationsand considerations for eye tracking in industrial settings are identified and discussed. The paperconcludes that while eye tracking can be used to effectively capture and visualize insightfulinformation, it faces major challenges related to subjectivity in analysis and labour intensiveness.

T1 - The development of community music in Munich
N2 - In German music education, the focus has historically been on formal music education in schools. Participatory music making in the community, or community music, has so far received little attention in theory or practice. This thesis constitutes the first in-depth analysis of the development of community music in Germany, conducted using empirical data and literature analysis. The development of the Munich Community Music Action Research Group is highlighted as an example of the potential of community music in the German context. The research shows that the context-specific development of a framework for community music in Germany, within the community music spirit of participation reflected in the action research methodology, gives voice to and connects community musicians, and has contributed considerably to the development of community music theory and practice, not only in Munich, but across Germany.

T1 - Steel Mills as Syngas Source for Methanol Synthesis: Simulation and Practical Performance Investigations
JF - Chemical Engineering Transactions
N2 - In the present contribution, the utilization of steel-mill gases for an industrial methanol synthesis process is described. The focus of this work is on the influence of syngas compositions derived from steel-mill gases on an industrial Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalyst. Elevated CO2 and H2O concentrations seem to have an irreversible impact on the activity of the catalyst. In order to obtain realistic gas composition for the catalyst tests, a process simulation of the methanol synthesis was conducted. The calculated gas compositions at the reactor inlet were applied in a practical test in order to evaluate the catalyst stability under steel mill gas conditions. No noticeable deactivation was observed.

T1 - Gazing at facial features increases dissociation and decreases attractiveness ratings in non-clinical females - A potential explanation for a common ritual in body dysmorphic disorder
JF - PloS one
N2 - Rituals, such as gazing at faces, are common in body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) and appear in cognitive-behavioral models as a maintaining factor. Rituals are also common in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). In contrast to OCD, the proposed associations between rituals and intrusive thoughts/appearance preoccupation have not been empirically investigated for BDD. We examined if the assumed effect of gazing rituals on attractiveness ratings exists and if it is associated with dissociation. In an experiment, we asked N = 65 non-clinical females to focus on the nose of a photographed face at pre- and post-test. In between, participants gazed at the nose of either the same (relevant gazing) or another face (irrelevant gazing). We found increasing dissociation after gazing in both conditions and a differentially stronger decrease of attractiveness ratings in the relevant gazing condition. Our findings support the hypothesized effect of gazing rituals on attractiveness evaluation in cognitive-behavioral models for BDD.

T1 - Attraktive E-Learning-Angebote schnell und kostenfrei entwickeln? Kein Problem!

T1 - Modeling Music-Selection Behavior in Everyday Life: A Multilevel Statistical Learning Approach and Mediation Analysis of Experience Sampling Data
JF - Frontiers in psychology
N2 - Music listening has become a highly individualized activity with smartphones and music streaming services providing listeners with absolute freedom to listen to any kind of music in any situation. Until now, little has been written about the processes underlying the selection of music in daily life. The present study aimed to disentangle some of the complex processes among the listener, situation, and functions of music listening involved in music selection. Utilizing the experience sampling method, data were collected from 119 participants using a smartphone application. For 10 consecutive days, participants received 14 prompts using stratified-random sampling throughout the day and reported on their music-listening behavior. Statistical learning procedures on multilevel regression models and multilevel structural equation modeling were used to determine the most important predictors and analyze mediation processes between person, situation, functions of listening, and music selection. Results revealed that the features of music selected in daily life were predominantly determined by situational characteristics, whereas consistent individual differences were of minor importance. Functions of music listening were found to act as a mediator between characteristics of the situation and music-selection behavior. We further observed several significant random effects, which indicated that individuals differed in how situational variables affected their music selection behavior. Our findings suggest a need to shift the focus of music-listening research from individual differences to situational influences, including potential person-situation interactions.

T1 - Vocational Rehabilitation of Young Adults with Psychological Disabilities
JF - Journal of Occupational Rehabilitation
N2 - Objective Vocational rehabilitation measures support youth and young adults with disabilities to obtain vocational training and to enter the labor market. In Germany, a growing number of young people with psychological disabilities in vocational rehabilitation can be observed. The study at hand focuses on this group and examines their (un-)unemployment biographies before vocational rehabilitation, their access to vocational rehabilitation and identifies their individual challenges within the process of vocational rehabilitation. Methods Using a multi-methods approach, we analyze representative administrative data of the German Federal Employment Agency as well as biographical interviews conducted with young rehabilitants. We compare the population of young rehabilitants with psychological disorders to those with other disabilities in terms of vocational rehabilitation and initial labor market entry in order to get a representative picture about their school to work transitions. Since rehabilitants with psychological disabilities tend to be older than the remaining population, analyses are stratified by age groups. In addition, qualitative in-depth interviews provide an additional and deeper understanding of specific employment barriers youth with psychological disorders have to overcome. Furthermore, the individual perspective gives insight on how the crucial transition from school to work is perceived by the population under study. Results The pathway into vocational rehabilitation of youth with psychological disorders is often characterized by obstacles in their transition from school to work. During rehabilitation, it appears essential to provide psychological stabilization along with vocational training. Although their average level of education is higher than those of other rehabilitants, labor market transition after (often company-external) vocational training challenges many young people with psychological disabilities, leaving many of them with comparatively poor labor market prospects. Conclusions Young persons with psychological disabilities, who come from regular schools or dropped out from regular school or university, seem to find their way to vocational rehabilitation more indirectly. Furthermore, vocational rehabilitation itself is often prolonged for those with psychological disabilities possibly due to a corresponding stabilization process. However, vocational rehabilitation can be a core element within the stabilization process of a psychological disease.

N2 - Multi-user virtual reality is transforming towards a social activity that is no longer only used by remote users, but also in large-scale location-based experiences. Usage of realtime-tracked avatars in co-located business-oriented applications with a ”guide-user-scenario” is examined for user-related factors of Spatial Presence, Social Presence, User Experience and Task Load. A user study was conducted in order to compare both techniques of a realtime-tracked avatar and a non-visualised guide. Results reveal that the avatar-guide enhanced and stimulated communicative processes while facilitating interaction possibilities and creating a higher sense of mental immersion for users and engagement.

N2 - We report about several experiments on applying mixed reality technology in the context of accessing collective memories from atomic bombs, Holocaust and Second World War. We discuss the impact of Virtual Reality, Augmented Virtuality and Augmented Reality for specific memorial locations. We show how to use a virtual studio for demonstrating an augmented reality application for a specific location in a remote session within a video conference. Augmented Virtuality is used to recreate the local environment, thus providing a context and helping the participants recollect emotions related to a certain place. This technique demonstrates the advantages of using virtual (VR) and augmented (AR) reality environments for rapid prototyping and pitching project ideas in a live remote setting.

N2 - The efforts of governments to reach out to their citizens abroad become evident in diaspora policies. Broadly, diaspora policies are defined as state institutions and practices that apply to members of that state’s society who reside outside of the national territory. There is an increase in diaspora policies in Sub-Saharan African countries. However, little is known about the political interests behind diaspora policies.
This is the starting point for this dissertation, which aims to develop a deeper understanding of diaspora policies. The objective of this research is to determine factors that de-scribe and explain diaspora policies.
This investigation takes the form of a structured focused comparison between the policy analysis of the two cases Cameroon and Ghana. Within the case studies, there is a special focus on two central diaspora policy measures: dual citizenship and voting rights for those abroad. In a certain sense Ghana’s diaspora policy is more developed than Cameroon’s. Moreover, it also contains measures aiming at the so-called “old African diaspora”.
The most obvious finding to emerge from this study is that diaspora policy explaining factors have to be seen within the polity of a country. Transition and democratization processes play a crucial role for diaspo-ra policies. Therefore, this study reveals differences between authoritarian and democratic states.
First and foremost, governmental elites seek to secure their power and support of citizens abroad, which applies to both democratic and authoritarian regimes. However, in authoritarian systems general reservations about political participation impact and restrict cooperation with the diaspora. Moreover, inclusion of migrants through an active diaspora policy is not encouraged at all. Authoritarian regimes target segments of the diaspora that do not oppose the existing status quo. Further, diaspora policy is used to demonstrate an openness which in fact is not given.
This research has also shown that while in authoritarian systems the political elites dominate diaspora politics and leave no space for other actors, party differences are gaining importance for diaspora politics in the context of democratic transition. Political parties compete for the support of citizens abroad, build and use networks with members of the diaspora to secure and gain power. Next to political parties, other actors can impact diaspora politics in democratic system.
With greater democratization, citizens abroad have a higher influence on diaspora politics through active membership in political parties or through politi-cal lobbying. However, diaspora’s influence also depends on its strengths and national fragmentation as well as strong networks with other political actors in the country of origin.
One more significant finding to emerge from this dissertation is that return migration creates connections and networks between citizens abroad and political elites in the country of origin. This may be explained by the fact that returnees often hold political offices and are a central interface between diaspora politics and citizens abroad. In general, therefore, it seems that more return migration creates a stronger impulse for a more active diaspora policy within the political system.
If states open political space, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) plays a central role, espe-cially in the design of diaspora policies. However, it has to be questioned whether this weakens the owner-ship of diaspora policies of the governments of countries of origin. In addition, research institutions also strengthen diaspora policies. In particular, within a democratic context they can shape diaspora policies. These findings suggest that these institutions should be included in research on diaspora policies in order to explain the diaspora policy of a specific state. Further, the research shows that normative and idealistic aspects have to be taken into account as they can form a basis for diaspora policy.
Moreover, the study results reveal the need for a differentiation between different diaspora policy measures. Diaspora political measures, which are accompanied by political rights (especially dual citizenship and voting rights abroad), are subject to stronger political interests than it is the case with development-related diaspora promotion.
