The control component consists of a model predictive control applica-tion (MPC) with a flexible objective function and on-line tunable weights, which runs on a In-dustrial PC and uses a reduced order dynamic model of the receiver’s thermal and flow dy-namics. The second component consists of a service-life monitoring unit, which estimates the service-life consumption of the absorber tubes depending on the current mode of operation based on thermal stresses and creep fatigue in the high temperature regime. The calculation of stresses is done based on a detailed finite element study, in which a digital twin of the re-ceiver was developed. By parallelising the model solver, the estimation of service-life con-sumption became capable of real-time operation. The system has been implemented at a test facility in Jülich, Germany, and awaits field experiments. In this paper, the modeling and archi-tecture are presented along simulation results, which were validated on a hardware-in-the-loop test bench. The MPC showed good disturbance rejection while respecting process variable constraints during the simulation studies. The forecast accuracy of distal volcanic ash clouds is important for providing valid aviation advice during volcanic ash eruption. However, because the distal part of volcanic ash plume is far from the volcano, the influence of eruption information on this part becomes rather indirect and uncertain, resulting in inaccurate volcanic ash forecasts in these distal areas. In our approach, we use real-life aircraft in situ observations, measured in the northwestern part of Germany during the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption, in an ensemble-based data assimilation system combined with a volcanic ash transport model to investigate the potential improvement on the forecast accuracy with regard to the distal volcanic ash plume. We show that the error of the analyzed volcanic ash state can be significantly reduced through assimilating real-life in situ measurements. After a continuous assimilation, it is shown that the aviation advice for Germany, the Netherlands and Luxembourg can be significantly improved. We suggest that with suitable aircrafts measuring once per day across the distal volcanic ash plume, the description and prediction of volcanic ash clouds in these areas can be greatly improved. Until now, little has been written about the processes underlying the selection of music in daily life. The present study aimed to disentangle some of the complex processes among the listener, situation, and functions of music listening involved in music selection. Utilizing the experience sampling method, data were collected from 119 participants using a smartphone application. For 10 consecutive days, participants received 14 prompts using stratified-random sampling throughout the day and reported on their music-listening behavior. Statistical learning procedures on multilevel regression models and multilevel structural equation modeling were used to determine the most important predictors and analyze mediation processes between person, situation, functions of listening, and music selection. Results revealed that the features of music selected in daily life were predominantly determined by situational characteristics, whereas consistent individual differences were of minor importance. Functions of music listening were found to act as a mediator between characteristics of the situation and music-selection behavior. We further observed several significant random effects, which indicated that individuals differed in how situational variables affected their music selection behavior. Our findings suggest a need to shift the focus of music-listening research from individual differences to situational influences, including potential person-situation interactions. The eruption started in late August 2014 and is still ongoing as of January 2015. The main threat from this event has been atmospheric pollution of SO2 that is carried by wind to all parts of the country and produces elevated concentrations of SO2 that have frequently violated National Air Quality Standards (NAQS) in many population centers. The Volcanic Ash Research (VAR) group in Iceland is focused on airborne measurement of ash contamination to support safe air travel, as well as various gas concentrations. In relation to the Holuhraun eruption the VAR group has organized an investigation campaign including 10 measurement flights and performed measurements of both the source emissions and the plume distribution. SO2 concentrations measured at the source showed clear potential for creating pollution events in the toxic range and contamination of surface waters. The data obtained in the measurement campaign was used for calibration of the WRF-chem model of the dispersion of SO2 and volcanic ash concentration. The model has both been run in operational forecast mode (since mid October) as well as in a dynamical downscaling mode, to estimate the dispersion and fallout of SO2 from the plume. The model results indicate that a large part of the sulphur was precipitated in the Icelandic highlands. The first melt waters during the spring thaw are likely to contain acid sulphur compounds that can be harmful for vegetation, with the highland vegetation being the most vulnerable. These results will be helpful to estimate the pollution load on farmlands and pastures of farmers. Collecting and labeling these drive scenes is a very time-consuming and expensive process. Currently, it is not possible to reuse these drive scenes with different optical properties, because there exists no numerically efficient model for the transfer function of the optical system. We present a numerical model for the point spread function (PSF) of an optical system that can efficiently model both experimental measurements and lens design simulations of the PSF. The numerical basis for this model is a nonlinear regression of the PSF with an artificial neural network. The novelty lies in the portability and the parameterization of this model. We present a lens measurement series, yielding a numerical function for the PSF that depends only on the parameters defocus, field, and azimuth. By convolving existing images and videos with this PSF, we generate images as if seen through the measured lens. The methodology applies to any optical scenario, but we focus on the context of autonomous driving, where the quality of the detection algorithms depends directly on the optical quality of the used camera system. With this model, it is possible to reuse existing recordings, with the potential to avoid millions of test drive miles. The parameterization of the optical model allows for a method to validate the functional and safety limits of camera-based advanced driver assistance systems based on the real, measured lens actually used in the product. This deposited ash has been frequently remobilized by the wind causing concern for the health of Icelanders living in the region. An investigation was carried out to determine whether it would be possible to produce forecasts of days when high airborne ash concentrations were likely to occur. Information about the spatially varying surface characteristics of the region of deposited ash is not available so in the modeling approach adopted here ash is released from the surface at a rate proportional to the cube of the excess friction velocity (local friction velocity minus a threshold) only when the friction velocity exceeds a threshold. Movement of the resuspended ash is then modeled in a Lagrangian dispersion model. Modeled ash concentrations are compared to observed concentrations from two periods; PM10 observations between 23 May and 2 July 2010 and airborne particle counts between 21 September 2010 and 16 February 2011. More than 66% of the resuspension episodes between May and July are captured by the model and the relative magnitudes of the modeled episodes in this period are in good agreement with the observations. 66% of episodes between October and February are also captured by the model although there is an increase in the false alarm rate which appears to be due to the influence of precipitation. This paper is meant to evaluate current cross-platform development for mobile applications. The background for its necessity, its conceptual approach and the problems to face when developing cross-platform were determined and explained in detail. Afterwards, certain solutions were evaluated against the former insights. Based on the results, an informed discussion and conclusion was performed. The mobile environment consist of only two big players by now, Android and iOS. These operating systems differ in architecture, design and consequently in the way applications are developed for each of them. Therefore, high demands are made towards cross-platform solutions. Tools which allow for the creation of applications for multiple platforms at once have to match native applications in regard to user experience and performance. At the same time they need to be able to optimize developments with the goal of being cost efficient. Apache Cordova, Xamarin and NativeScript were selected for evaluation in regard to their ability to meet these requirements. Cordova acts as the comparison group of cross-platform tools. It is the big player in the field and there are reasons for this. However, aspiring solutions with higher nativity and ambitious approaches are emerging. Xamarin and NativeScript deliver top quality results while offering loosely coupled developments. Therefore it is possible to develop high quality applications and still benefit from the advantages of platform-independent solutions. As a consequence mobile development is about to change in the foreseeable future. More sophisticated approaches may lead to a higher number of developments done cross-platform, and rightfully so. We hypothesize that muscle elasticity of the lower extremities differs between patients with COPD and age-related controls. The shear modulus of the soleus muscle was measured non-invasively using MR elastography (MRE) at 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% of the subject’s maximum applied force. The results from this study showed statistical differences between the patients and controls, even though there were no statistical differences in the maximum applied force.
