N2 - Politics and economics rely on a well-founded, rapid and flexible assessment of electricity supply security as a basis for strategic decisions. Complex probabilistic simulation models incorporating a large number of possible future scenarios are used for this purpose. However, the long simulation runtimes of several hours per scenario limit the depth of analysis. In addition, the analyses are complicated by the forecasting of time-resolved future boundary conditions. This work demonstrates that machine learning (ML) methods, combined with adapted Design of Experiments (DoE) techniques, allow for a highly accurate approximation of electricity supply security metrics obtained from a complex simulation model based on recursive convolutions. The time reduction compared to the native simulation model is very high, while maintaining a high degree of accuracy. In the area of forecasting time-resolved boundary conditions, the results also demonstrate that ML methods offer considerable potential for improvement over classical methods. In summary, the investigated and proposed ML methods are capable of performing a detailed analysis of the security of electricity supply that is commensurate with its complexity (thousands of future scenarios) within a practical amount of time (less than an hour). With an emphasis on their function in thermal control, this review article offers an in-depth review of PCM applications in electronics, buildings and solar energy systems. PCMs are used in electronics to control device temperatures, which lowers the risk of overheating and increases operational efficiency by 10% to 25%. Through latent heat storage and release in reaction to temperature changes, PCMs are incorporated into walls, floors, and roofs in building applications to improve thermal comfort and cut energy use by 15% to 30%. By storing thermal energy for steady power generation, PCMs increase the dependability and efficiency of solar energy systems by 8%–20%. This review examines the basic ideas behind PCMs, assesses various PCM (such as organic, inorganic, and eutectic PCMs), and details about real-world applications in these energy management fields. Important issues are examined, such as material compatibility, cost-effectiveness, and long-term stability. In order to maximize performance in these crucial applications, the conclusion emphasizes the need for improvements in cost-effective PCM formulations for the improved thermal conductivity (0.2–0.7 W m−1·K−1), and adaptive control systems. While classical approaches primarily emphasize technological and economic aspects, cultural and moral influences are increasingly coming into focus in research. In particular, the treatment of out-groups and the intensity of in-group preferences play a crucial role, as expressed in the societal contrast between social cohesion and individual freedom. A central aspect of this debate is the moral dimension, particularly the tension between universalism, relativism, and particularism. This study examines the impact of universalism on a country's innovativeness by situating the concept within cultural theory and analyzing it empirically. The findings provide new insights into the relationship between cultural values and innovation potential with regard to moral capital in a society. So far, health effects of long-term exposure to ambient ultrafine particles are not well understood, owing to a lack of exposure data and epidemiological studies. Methods We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis on the health effects of long-term exposure to ultrafine particles, including studies published until December 2024. A meta-analysis was conducted for outcomes with at least four available effect estimates. Confidence in the body of evidence was evaluated using the Office of Health Assessment and Translation method. Results We identified 85 studies investigating various mortality, morbidity and subclinical outcomes. In meta-analyses of single-pollutant models, we found positive associations with natural mortality (hazard ratio 1.06, 95% CI 1.04–1.08) and C-reactive protein (10.14% increase (95% CI −0.51–21.99%) per 10 000 pt·cm−3 increase in long-term exposure to ultrafine particles, with low and inadequate levels of evidence, respectively. The remaining studies revealed overall limited evidence for adverse effects on a wide range of outcomes. Less than half of the studies adjusted for co-pollutants. Conclusion The evidence base on long-term health effects of ultrafine particles has increased substantially in the past decade, while the overall evidence for independent effects of long-term ultrafine particle exposure remains inadequate to low. More studies are needed to draw firm conclusions about the independent adverse effects of long-term ultrafine particles on various health end-points, with a special focus on the influence of co-pollutant adjustment. Libro de actas N2 - Cutting of stalk material is a core process within the whole harvesting period. During the entire harvesting, every stalk is cut at least one time. For other agricultural processes, such as grain crop harvesting or mulching of brownfields, cutting processes belong also to the main techniques. They have a significant influence on the efficiency and profitability of agricultural machines. Minimizing wear has a high level of importance regarding an environmental friendly and resource efficient agriculture. Wear during agricultural cutting processes is mainly caused due to abrasion and impact stress. Blunt and deformed blades affect the energy efficiency and the cutting quality. The increase of fuel consumption and frequent machine breakdowns with an involvement of high labor and material costs generate considerable economic losses. A consequent, methodical optimization of the wear behavior of the blades can offer a high saving potential of ecological and economic resources. The blade geometry, base material and heat respectively surface treatment substantially determine the wear resistance. Under technological and economic considerations these parameters have to be optimized. Therefore, a test method has been developed at the FMDauto in cooperation with the Ennepetaler Schneid- und Mähtechnik (ESM) GmbH & Co KG. The test bench enables to test different blades of agricultural machines under standardized and repeatable conditions. This paper presents the test bench and the results of several wear tests. The examinations of the abrasive wear and the impact stress on cutter blades are shown. Algorithms developed at FMDauto are used to analyze the results. It is carried out that further developments of the analyzing methods to describe the sharpness and disruptions of cutter blades are reasonable. Using CuO–H2O nanofluid in a bottom-heated channel with circular expansion, we examine the complex interactions between forced convection, magnetic fields, and uoyancy effects. Through systematic numerical analysis, we explore the combined influences of Rayleigh, Reynolds, and Hartmann numbers on thermal performance. Our findings reveal significant heat transfer enhancement (up to 137 %) under optimal conditions, particularly with vertical magnetic field orientation at Re = 100 and Ha = 30. The results demonstrate how adiabatic blocks modify flow structures, with larger blocks diminishing vortex intensity while elevated Ra generates secondary vortices that interact with primary circulations. Magnetic field effects show notable dependence on orientation, with vertical fields generally promoting better heat transfer than horizontal configurations. To complement the numerical analysis, we develop a predictive model using Artificial Neural Network (ANN) for Nusselt numbers across various operating conditions, achieving over 99 % accuracy. The integrated computational-ANN approach offers significant advancements in optimizing thermal systems in various areas, ranging from electronics cooling to microfluidic devices. Cutting tools in agricultureare exposed to a high amount of abrasive wear and impact stress. Increasing the wear resistance of cuttings tools has a highsignificance for the efficiency and profitability of agricultural machinery. Blunt and deformed blades decrease the energy efficiencyand the cutting quality. Blade failures cause machine breakdowns and increase labor and material costs. To enable a consistent andsystematic optimization of the blades, a suitable testing method is necessary. Conventional field tests do not provide comparableand repeatable results. Therefore, a test method developed at the FMDauto in cooperation with the Ennepetaler Schneid- undM¨ahtechnik (ESM) GmbH & Co. KG is presented. The test bench provides standardized and repeatable conditions with a similarwear pattern which is found during field operations. One of the remaining challenges is a clear wear characterization. N2 - Field sprayers have nozzles mounted along a spray boom that distribute a mixture of a crop protection agent (CPA) and a carrier liquid, usually water. Since the nozzles apply only a single CPA mixture and often cannot be controlled individually, application is not demand-oriented, which can result in locally insufficient, excessive, or non-optimal CPA application. This paper presents a laboratory model of a newly developed high-speed dosing unit for mixing three CPAs with a carrier liquid, enabling individual plant treatment using only the minimally required amount of CPA. The system operates independently of the carrier liquid’s hydraulic system, responds rapidly, and provides extremely accurate dosing. Based on an application map containing crop status and GPS position, the required application volume, timing, position, and CPA type are determined in an ISOBUS terminal and transmitted to a control unit that actuates the dosing unit. In addition to the newly developed hardware and control system, initial test bench results are presented. This is important, since the increasing miniaturization and performance demands for electronic devices have led in a growing need for advanced thermal management systems capable of handling rapid transient loads. The novelty of the work lies in examining different heat sink layouts that optimize the heat dissipation capabilities of GR42 PCMs while minimizing size and weight for electronic cooling. The experimental testing was conducted using three configurations, namely no fin, circular fin and hexagonal fin, with three input powers (4 W, 8 W, and 12 W). The experimental results show that the hexagonal-fin heat sink, surface area is 25 % more than circular fins, exhibited superior thermal performance without significant variation in input power. Notably, the hexagonal-fin heat sink achieved the desired set point temperature of 55 ◦C in 33 % less time than the circular-fin design and 45 % less time than the heat sink without fins. Furthermore, the peak temperatures increased up to 21 % for circular fins. During the charging cycles, the enhancement ratios vary from 72 % and begin to narrow to 25 % during discharge cycles. The hexagonal-fin configuration also exhibited superior melting dynamics, completing the phase transition 44 % faster at higher input power than the circular fins, and established a thermal deviation of nearly 51 % less than finless heat sinks. These findings underscore the critical role of fin geometry and PCM integration in achieving uniform temperature distribution and improved energy storage efficiency. Overall, the hexagonal-fin heat sink with GR42 PCM shows strong potential as a passive cooling solution for low-power portable electronic devices. However, in teaching academic writing, lecturers have to deal with the two challenges of decreasing reading competence in young people and increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in reading and writing assignments. In engineering in particular, literacy understood as reading and writing competence is essential - whether for understanding complex tasks, analysing case studies or dealing with technical documents such as the product requirements document. Against this background, it is crucial to develop strategies and discuss modern approaches to specifically promote students' reading and writing skills and thus create an essential basis for successful scientific work and problem-solving. While for a solution of this task the brain has access to a massive parallelism and a vast, hierarchically organized, and auto-associative memory, common computer architectures are just able to a sequential processing of information stored in a non auto-associative memory. Even modern, parallelly operating, multi-processor systems are far away from the performance of our brain. However, nowadays, it is possible to solve complex and memory extensive pattern recognition problems, like the recognition of handwritten digits or the transcription of speech, satisfactorily with a common computer by the use of modern statistical and algorithmic learning approaches. One of the most successful pattern recognition methods is the so-called Support Vector Machine (SVM). The SVM is based on the learning paradigm of structural risk minimization, which outperforms empirical approaches if only few data is available for solving the considered classification problem. Although the SVM has proven very good recognition performances in many cases, the SVM also comes up with limitations, for example if specific a priori knowledge shall be used. In particular, the increasing complexity of applications requires a high adaptivity of the classification method to the specific problem. Also concerning this point, the SVM is limited due to a restricted variety of implementable classification functions. The objective of the present thesis is the development of new learning algorithms for the classification of patterns, that on the one hand overcome the limitations of the SVM, but on the other hand are based on the same theoretical concepts facilitating the good performance of the SVM. Two new algorithms will be presented that are justified by a theoretical generalization of the SVM, and which will be utilized for the first time for a practical implementation. In contrast to the SVM, the new methods make accessible a much larger function class for constructing a classifier. This is an important prerequisite for flexible adaptation of the classifier to difficult classification tasks with particular requirements as well as for the integration of a priori knowledge about the problem at hand. In this work, the way to implementable algorithms leads across different mathematical reformulations of the original problem. Starting with the theoretical generalization of the SVM, it results a restricted optimization problem that is difficult to solve in general. In a first step, this problem is expressed in terms of a restricted minimax-problem by a modification of the suitable classification functions to a still very large function class consisting of (affine-)linear combinations of at least one-time continuously differentiable functions. In the next step, the minimax-problem is converted into a so-called Semi-Infinite Problem (SIP). It turns out, that this particular mathematical problem is appropriate in order to obtain a solution of the original problem for the considered function class using well-known optimization methods. To further exploit the problem structure, an equivalent dual problem is derived from the SIP. Therefore, we prove a duality theorem about the equality of the optimal values of the dual and the original problem. For solving the dual problem, a multilevel iterative approach is developed from which the proposed algorithms follow by pursuing different solution strategies. Moreover, all sub-optimization methods of any stage necessary for an implementation in software are developed. Namely, these are an adapted interior-point-method, a simulated annealing based search heuristics and a particular gradient decent approach. Furthermore, options are depicted for an improvement of efficiency for future implementations. Besides the emphasis on the theoretical development of new learning methods and their practical implementations, all algorithms were implemented in the MATLAB(R) programming environment for the experimental part of the present thesis. Hence, they are also available for further research purposes in future. For the first time, classification results are explored and evaluated in comparison to the SVM on different data sets. As test data, an artificial 2d-dataset as well as two real-world datasets were used. In the concluding experiment, a scenario is prototypically considered to which the SVM is only inadequately applicable and which shall precisely prove the capability of the new methods in that case. It follows, regarding the considered datasets, the proposed learning methods reach comparably good classification accuracy like the SVM in standard applications. Moreover, the particular benefit of the new methods is reflected theoretically and experimentally in the ability to solve classification problems using decision functions that are not accessible to SVMs. Thereby, the underlying ideas, which make the SVM excel compared to other approaches with respect to generalization performances in case of few available learning information, are adequately transported into the proposed new environment. This opens the way for a design and a use of new classifiers that have not been implementable in a robust and generalizing basic concept so far. We propose a Generalized Discriminant Analysis (GerDA) based on DNNs to learn discriminative features of low dimension optimized with respect to a fast classification from a large set of acoustic features for emotion recognition. On nine frequently used emotional speech corpora, we compare the performance of GerDA features and their subsequent linear classification with previously reported benchmarks obtained using the same set of acoustic features classified by Support Vector Machines (SVMs). Our results impressively show that low-dimensional GerDA features capture hidden information from the acoustic features leading to a significantly raised unweighted average recall and considerably raised weighted average recall. In steel plants, physical values are distributed over the complete process chain of steel making while the environmental conditions are harsh with respect to high temperature, aggressive fluids, water, shock and dust. These conditions render the use of electronic devices focusing a consumer market impossible. The developed self-contained smart measuring system presented in this paper survives in harsh environments and is composed of small-sized modules providing miscellaneous functionalities. The high degree of modularity in hard-and software facilitates a cost-effective adaptation to many applications, like vibration monitoring, temperature logging or torque measurement. Different onboard measurement components are available yet, namely high sensitive bridge amplifiers for strain measurements, accelerometers, gyroscopes, orientation-, temperature- and humidity sensors as well as an unique system identification. A communication module enables wireless transmission of the acquired data via Bluetooth or NFC online. Moreover, different power supply features are supported by the power module: Ultra-low power modes for long-life battery use, recharging of lithium cells, and an inductive power supply for wireless power transfer for applications with moving or rotating components. The heart of the system is a powerful ARM based microcontroller which enables an intelligent analysis of the data in situ. This is especially important where data size and complexity is the relevant factor for example in area-wide sensor networks. Most studies tend to overestimation in this respect: acted data is often used rather than spontaneous data, results are reported on pre-selected prototypical data, and true speaker disjunctive partitioning is still less common than simple cross-validation. A considerably more realistic impression can be gathered by inter-set evaluation: we therefore show results employing six standard databases in a cross-corpora evaluation experiment. To better cope with the observed high variances, different types of normalization are investigated. 1.8k individual evaluations in total indicate the crucial performance inferiority of inter- to intra-corpus testing. T1 - Enhanced prediction of heat transfer in jet impingement cooling using an artificial intelligence: A case study JF - Case Studies in Thermal Engineering N2 - This paper is about the gas turbine cooling model using the extended jet array. The aim of the present study is to explain the effect of the impinging jet configuration of elongated jet holes on the heat transfer distribution with a deep Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). CNNs preserve spatial relationships through convolutional operations—unlike traditional Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), which require flattening of input data—allowing for higher accuracy with smaller datasets and faster training due to fewer trainable parameters. The goal is to understand how accurate and fast deep learning models with limited data can deliver predictions for complex systems such as jet impingement cooling. The proposed CNN model was compared with the numerical and experimental data. Jet impingement cooling was examined with four different Reynolds numbers (16250, 21700, 27100, 36250) and six dimensionless gaps between the jet and the target surface (G/D = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6). Mean and local Nusselt number (Nu) distributions were investigated in particular. G/D = 2 was selected as the test data for the model among the configurations. While the CFD model failed to identify this peak performance point, the CNN model accurately captured this maximum behavior despite being trained only on other configurations. Moreover, the CNN model demonstrated more suitable prediction accuracy in the first two jet impingement regions than the CFD data, especially in capturing peak Nusselt numbers and localized hot spots. It has been determined that the CNN model provided more accurate predictions of the local Nusselt numbers within the measurement region compared to the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) study for the average Nu, the proposed CNN model showed a closer agreement to experimental data than numerical simulation by 4.15 % at the Re = 32500 and G/D = 2. At the same time, development cycles are becoming ever shorter and the requirements for safety, conformity and sustainability ever higher. In this article, a meta-analysis is carried out on the possibility of integrating sustainability aspects as requirements in a systems engineering approach and the differences are discussed. Methodology/approach - A systematic literature search of articles in ScienceDirect between 2016 and 2023 is carried out. The keywords are sustainability and system engineering incl. synonyms. In a further step, the papers are screened for their relevance to product service systems and the relevance for the purpose. Findings – To address sustainability in complex technical systems, a holistic, model-based approach is required to ensure that sustainability aspects are considered. By using frameworks and methods such as macPro² and SysLM, requirements and indicators for sustainability can be integrated into the development phase, whereas currently only the environmental dimension is usually considered via resource and energy indicators. Onboard instruments included gas detectors (e.g., SO2, CO2), visible & thermal IR cameras, air samplers, temperature pressure & humidity sensors, particle counters, & a nephelometer. Deployments are timed to support bimonthly overflights of the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) onboard the NASA Terra satellite (26 deployments to date). In situ observations of dilute plume SO2 concentrations (~1-20ppmv), plume dimensions, and associated temperature, pressure, & humidity profiles, validate detailed radiative transfer-based SO2 retrievals, as well as archive-wide ASTER band-ratio SO2 algorithms. Our recent UAV-based CO2 observations confirm high concentrations (e.g., ~3000ppmv max at summit jet), with 1000-1500ppmv flank values, and essentially global background CO2 levels (400ppmv) over distal surroundings. Transient Turrialba He detections (up to 20ppmv) were obtained with a small (~10kg) airborne mass spectrometer on a light aircraft—a UAV version (~3kg) will deploy there soon on the UCR DELTA 500. Thus, these platforms, though small (most payloads <500gm), can perform valuable systematic measurements of potential eruption hazards, as well as of volcano processes. Because they are economical, flexible, and effective, such platforms promise unprecedented capabilities for researchers and responders throughout Central and South America, undertaking volcanic data acquisitions uniquely suited to such small aircraft in close proximity to known hazards, or that were previously only available using full-sized manned aircraft. This work was carried out, in part, at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory of the California Institute of Technology under NASA contract. Even in Germany the airports of Bremen, Hamburg and Berlin were closed for several hours on 25 May 2011. During this eruption period in May 2011, a team of the Duesseldorf University of Applied Sciences, the University of Iceland, the University of Reykjavik and the IMO has performed airborne in-situ measurements over Iceland and Germany as well as ground based measurements in the south of Iceland. The ground based measurements were performed continuously during the whole eruption period at two significant positions (Skogar and Hvollsvöllur) with optical particle counters (OPCs). The measurement method was based on measuring the airborne concentrations of the classic aerosol components (PM10, PM2.5 and PM1) and TSP (total suspended particles) every 6 seconds. Additional measurement flights on Iceland were started already one day after the beginning of the eruption (twelve in-situ measurement flights) and marked the spatial and temporal spread of volcanic ash in the atmosphere. For the flights light slow flying piston engine powered airplanes where used. The flights over Iceland focused on the western part of Iceland in the region of Reykjavik and Keflavik and over the international airport in Keflavik and were mostly coordinated by ISAVIA. The measurement flights helped to keep Keflavik International Airport open for many additional hours despite of adverse predictions by the London VAAC model, because it was possible to observe the particle concentration on-line during the flights. In Germany a measurement flight was performed on 25 May 2012 over the northern part of Germany where the volcanic ash cloud was forecasted from the dispersion model of the London VAAC. This flight was performed on the behalf of the German Weather Service (DWD). The measurement flights revealed most time relative low airborne ash concentrations over western Iceland, although the groundbased measured ash concentrations in the south of Iceland nearer to the Grimsvötn were very high. In Germany the measured concentrations during the flight were low enough to be consistent with the re-opening of the airports Bremen, Hamburg and Berlin, which were closed by the authorities for several hours on 25 May 2011 because of high concentration predictions by the VAAC-model. The measurement flights clearly proved that OPCs, based on slow flying piston-motor driven aircrafts, are very suitable for the determination of airborne ash particles during volcanic eruptions. This is an important issue for air traffic safety. A process of interest is the production of 1,3-butadiene (BD), which is primarily derived as a by-product of naphtha steam cracking. A sustainable alternative path involves converting renewable ethanol to BD via the Lebedev process, which requires a catalyst with balanced redox, acidic, and basic sites. Due to the necessity of a multifunctional catalyst, existing materials for this reaction are either comprised of catalyst mixtures or supported catalysts. In this study, we introduce a bulk material, saponite, containing M–O–Si sites, which combine required catalytic sites for the ethanol to BD (ETB) reaction in one material. The product composition in ethanol conversion were strongly dependent on the type of 3d-metal used, while no conclusive correlation between surface properties, conversion, and product composition was observed. Herein, using V-Sap*, we achieved an ethene productivity of 448 gethene kgcat−1 h−1 (74%) at 573.15 K. High acetaldehyde productivity was maintained with Cu-Sap* (466 gAcA kgcat−1 h−1, 49%) at 573.15 K and Zn-Sap (528 gAcA kgcat−1 h−1, 55%) at 723.15 K. Mg-Sap primarily produced ethene but also yielded 10 gBD kgcat−1 h−1 BD at 723.15 K. Higher BD outputs were observed with Ni-Sap (31 gBD kgcat−1 h−1 at 523.15 K) and Mn-Sap* (51 gBD kgcat−1 h−1 at 723.15 K). This underscores the potential of saponite-based materials for flexible product outputs in ethanol conversion, influenced by the choice of integrated 3d-metal. A1 - Benim, Ali Cemal T1 - Thermomagnetic convection and entropy generation in a hybrid nanofluid filled wavy-walled cavity heated non-uniformly JF - Archives of Thermodynamics N2 - In this work, thermomagnetic convection and irreversibility production in a hybrid nanofluid-filled wavy-walled porous thermal system containing a semi-circular heated bottom is presented. Both the sidewalls of the enclosure are cooled and undulated with varying undulation numbers. The lower wall is partially undulated following a semi-circular-shaped object and is heated isothermally. The horizontal walls are insulated. The cavity is occupied with Cu-Al2O3/water-based hybrid nanofluid and porous substances under the impact of the evenly applied horizontal magnetic field. This work significantly contributes to the existing research rendering an exhaustive understanding of the hydrothermal flow-physics as well as irreversibility production of a hybrid nanofluid in the cavity having surface undulation. The Galerkin weighted finite element method is utilized to solve the mathematical model. The hydrothermal performance of the thermal system is considerably influenced by various pertinent factors such as Darcy-Rayleigh number, Darcy number, Hartmann number, and number of undulations. The wall undulations have a critical role in altering the hydrothermal performance. Heatlines are used to analyse heat transport dynamics from the protruded hot surface to the heat sink. The protruded heater wall induces the formation of a hot upward plume in the nearest fluid layers. The flow divides into two parts forming a pair of circulations due to symmetrical cooling at the sidewalls. The flow behaviours are significantly dampened by increasing the Hartmann number. The associated total entropy generation is also demonstrated. This study contributes to the existing domain knowledge and provides insights for designing and optimizing similar thermal systems. The most common approach consists of dispersing small particles of dry ice, silver iodide, or other salts in the atmosphere. Here we show, using field experiments conducted under various atmospheric conditions, that laser filaments can induce water condensation and fast droplet growth up to several μm in diameter in the atmosphere as soon as the relative humidity exceeds 70%. We propose that this effect relies mainly on photochemical formation of p.p.m.-range concentrations of hygroscopic Hno3, allowing efficient binary Hno3–H2o condensation in the laser filaments. Thermodynamic, as well as kinetic, numerical modelling based on this scenario semiquantitatively reproduces the experimental results, suggesting that particle stabilization by Hno3 has a substantial role in the laser-induced condensation.
