Durch das Aufkommen von Crack hat sich die Situation in vielen Drogenszenen stark verändert und stellt die niedrigschwellige Suchthilfe vor große Herausforderungen. Ziel des „Open Drug Scene NRW-Surveys" war es, die Lebensumstände, Konsummuster und den psychosozialen Unterstützungsbedarf von Menschen in offenen Drogenszenen in vier Städten in Nordrhein-Westfalen zu analysieren. Methoden In einer multizentrischen Querschnittserhebung wurden insgesamt 525 Personen in offenen Drogenszenen in Köln, Düsseldorf, Essen und Münster befragt. Die Datenerhebung erfolgte über Interviews in niedrigschwelligen Einrichtungen und im öffentlichen Raum. Es wurde ein Fragebogen mit 55 Items genutzt und Daten zur Soziodemographie, Substanzkonsum, Erfahrungen von Überdosierungen, Hafterfahrungen, Wohnsituation, gesundheitlichen Situation, Nutzung des Hilfesystems sowie Unterstützungsbedarfe abgefragt. Ergebnisse Die Befragten waren im Durchschnitt 44 Jahre alt, 76,4 % waren männlich. Crack war mit 55,8 % die am häufigsten konsumierte Substanz, gefolgt von Heroin (36,2 %). Mit 64,0 % war ein Großteil der der Teilnehmenden wohnungslos und von Obdachlosigkeit waren 36,6 % betroffen. Von mindestens eine drogenbedingte Überdosierung berichteten 44,6 % der Konsument*innen mindestens. In Substitutionstherapie befanden sich 57,9 % der Befragten. Zum Zeitpunkt der Befragung waren 16,9 % der Drogenkonsument*innen nicht krankenversichert. Diskussion und Schlussfolgerung Crack ist am häufigsten konsumierte Substanz in den vier offenen Drogenszenen. Die befragten Menschen befinden sich in stark ausgeprägten multiplen Problemlagen, die sich gegenseitig bedingen. Der Anstieg des Crackkonsums und die hohe Wohnungs- und Obdachlosenrate erfordern gezielte, interdisziplinäre Maßnahmen. Lokale Unterschiede in den Daten der Studienstädte verdeutlichen den Bedarf an regional abgestimmten Hilfsangeboten und lokalen Drogenszeneerhebungen. The Functionally Generated Path (FGP), produced as a surface which envelops the actual occlusal surface of the moving opponent jaw, can be used for compact representation of dynamic occlusal relations. In traditional dentistry FGP is recorded as a bite impression in a patient’s mouth. We propose an efficient computerized technique for FGP reconstruction and validate it through implementation and testing. The distance maps between occlusal surfaces of jaws, calculated for multiple projection directions and accumulated for mandibular motion, provide information for FGP computation. Rasterizing graphics hardware is used for fast calculation of the distance maps. Real-world data are used: the scanned shape of teeth and the measured motion of the lower jaw. The aim of the simulation is visual representation of characteristics relevant to the chewing process. For realtime computer applications such as games, it is essential to represent shadows as accurate as possible. Also, various tv stations work with virtual studio systems instead of real studio sets. Especially for those systems, a realistic impression of the rendered and mixed scene is important. One challenge, hence, is the creation of a natural shadow impression. This paper presents the results of an empirical study to compare the performance and quality of different shadow mapping methods. For this test, a prototype studio renderer was developed. A percentage closer filter (pcf) with a number of specific resolutions is used to minimize the aliasing issue. More advanced algorithms which generate smooth shadows like the percentage closer soft shadow (pcss) method as well as the variance shadow maps (vsm) method are analysed. Different open source apis are used to develop the virtual studio renderer, giving the benefit of permanent enhancement. The Ogre 3D graphic engine is used to implement the rendering system, benefiting from various functions and plugins. The transmission of the tracking data is accomplished with the vrpn server/client and the Intersense api. The different shadow algorithms are compared in a virtual studio environment which also casts real shadows and thus gives a chance for a direct comparison throughout the empirical user study. Our intention is to improve interaction with virtual objects in a virtual set, which are usually not directly visible to the actor, but only on distant displays. Vibrotactile feedback might improve the appearance on tv because an actor is able to look in any desired direction (camera or virtual object) or to read text on a teleprompter while interacting with a virtual object. Visual feedback in a virtual studio lacks spatial relation to the actor, which impedes the adjustment of the desired interaction. The five tactors of the implemented system which are mounted on the tracked arm give additional information like collision, navigation and activation. The user study for the developed system shows that the duration for reaching a certain target is much longer in case no visual feedback is given, but the accuracy is similar. In this study, subjects reported that an activation signal indicating the arrival at the target of a drag & drop task was helpful. In this paper, we discuss the problems we encountered while developing such a vibrotactile display. Keeping these pitfalls in mind could lead to better feedback systems for actors in virtual studio environments. Gerade junge Unternehmen und Startups der Digitalbranche mit Ihren oftmals flachen Hierarchien machen sich agile Werte wie Selbstorganisation, Transparenz, Commitment, Kommunikation auf Augenhöhe und kontinuierliches Feedback zu eigen. Wir haben uns gefragt, ob sich agile Werte, Prinzipien und Methoden nicht auch auf die Hochschullehre übertragen lassen. Führt z.B. der Einsatz agiler Projekttools wie Slack oder Trello zu einer Bereicherung klassischer Lehrformate? Welche Auswirkungen haben sie möglicherweise auf Lernintensität und Lehreffizienz? Lässt sich mit "agileren" Lehrformaten auch ein Beitrag zur Entwicklung der digital literacy von Studierenden erzielen, um sie auf diesem Weg besser auf eine zunehmend digitalisierte Lebens- und Arbeitswelt vorzubereiten? In this paper, we present an approach for generating log files based on mobile screen recordings as a data source for Learning Analytics. Logging mobile application usage is limited to rather general system events unless you have access to the source code of the operating system or applications.To address this we generate log files from mobile screen recordings by applying computer vision and machine learning methods to detect individually defined events. In closing, we discuss how these log files can be used as a data source for Learning Analytics and relevant ethical concerns. Even though there are many benefits, the potential of immersive modelling has only been partly exploited due to unresolved problems such as ergonomic problems, numerous challenges with user interaction and the inability to perform exact, fast and progressive refinements. This paper explores past research, shows alternative approaches and proposes novel interaction tools for pending problems. An immersive modelling application for polygon meshes is created from scratch and tested by professional users of desktop modelling tools, such as Autodesk Maya, in order to assess the efficiency, comfort and speed of the proposed application with direct comparison to professional desktop modelling tools. Differing perspectives, processes, methods, tools, vocabularies, and standards are problems that arise in this context. We present an approach to support bringing together disciplines based on a common body of knowledge (CBK), in which knowledge from different disciplines is collected, integrated, and structured. The novelty of our approach is twofold: first, it introduces a CBK ontology, which allows one to semantically enrich contents in order to be able to query the CBK in a more elaborate way afterwards. Second, it heavily relies on user participation in building up a CBK, making use of the Semantic MediaWiki as a platform to support collaborative writing. The CBK ontology is backed by a conceptual framework, consisting of concepts to structure the knowledge, to provide access options to it, and to build up a common terminology. To ensure a high quality of the provided contents and to sustain the community’s commitment, we further present organizational means as part of our approach. We demonstrate our work using the example of a Network of Excellence EU project, which aims at bringing together researchers and practitioners from services computing, security and software engineering. We describe a tangible multitouch planning system, enabling a single user to prepare and customize scene flow and settings. Users can view and interact with virtual objects by using a tangible user interface on a capacitive multitouch surface. In a 2D setting created TV scenes are simultaneously rendered as separate view using a production/target renderer in 3D. Thereby the user experiences a closer reproduction of a final production and set assets can be reused. Subsequently, a user can arrange scenes on a timeline while maintaining different versions/sequences. The system consists of a tablet and a workstation, which does all application processing and rendering. The tablet is just an interface connected via wireless LAN. This paper discusses spatial sound authoring and its applications, including shared virtual reality environments based on VRML. New utilities introduced by this research are an inspector for sound sources, an interactive resource manager, and a visual soundscape manipulator. The tools are part of a sound spatialization framework and allow a designer/author of multimedia content to monitor and debug sound events. This article examines to what extent German tertiary education lives up to this expectation. The analysis of German module descriptions in engineering shows that there are no courses dedicated to creativity and that creativity and its techniques are mentioned only sparsely in the modules of the engineering curriculum. Surveys amongst our students show that they are usually familiar with techniques which are based on generating alternatives such as brainstorming and morphological box, but lack knowledge about techniques based on challenging assumptions such as forced connection. They tend to favour discursive techniques over intuitive ones and techniques which use generation of alternatives as an idea-generating principle. A combination of creativity techniques seems to be most conducive to creative output in our course. Finally, we present some first findings on creative sessions in remote work with the help of virtual whiteboards, which have gained in importance since the pandemic. Methodology – Firstly, we present an document analysis of the modules of Bachelor and Master programs of mechanical engineering at German universities and universities of applied sciences. Secondly, we present results from surveys in our Master course in “Innovation and Technology Management” where we gathered data from students over several years and performed an external evaluation of the output using Consensual Assessment Technique (CAT). These results include which creativity techniques the students know prior to the course and which they prefer as well as which techniques seem to be conducive to engineering creativity. Furthermore we surveyed their experiences with creative sessions as remote work. Conclusion – Overall, the article shows the importance to teach prospective engineers the basics in creativity. Students should have the opportunity to acquire knowledge about and apply different creativity techniques, as different techniques have different strengths and weaknesses and, thus, different areas of fruitful application. They should also have the chance to try out different modes such as in-person sessions and virtual sessions, as some of the future work will most likely shift online. Furthermore, a combination of different creativity techniques makes it more likely that engineers break through their usual systematic-analytic way of thinking and helps them to think outside the box to find creative solutions for the pressing problems of our time. To address the growing need for structured research data management (RDM) at UASs, the FDM@HAW network has emerged as a potential connector between NFDI and UAS landscape. It aims to raise awareness of NFDI services across a diverse UAS network, and articulate UAS-specific requirements back to NFDI. In doing so, it strengthens mutual integration and fosters targeted support. With over 200 institutions [1], UASs constitute a significant part of the German science system. Traditionally focused on teaching, UASs have become drivers of applied research and regional innovation. Their contributions to education and research make them essential actors in shaping RDM in Germany. Research at UASs benefits business, science, and society. In many federal states, the right to award doctorates further reinforces their research activities. Strengthening RDM competencies is important to ensure that valuable research data from UAS meet the FAIR principles. Furthermore, employers benefit from graduates equipped with strong data literacy. Despite their potential, UASs remain underrepresented in the NFDI (and partly in the RDM community). Low participation in NFDI consortia and limited association membership indicate a broader lack of engagement, largely due to low awareness of NFDI among UAS researchers and administrations [2, p.42] [3, p.6]. The NFDI structure report 2024 addresses this gap and calls for broader contact to UASs [4, p.27]. Structural challenges limit UAS engagement in RDM and the NFDI, including high teaching loads, minor resources, and partnerships prioritizing data protection over openness or commercial interests. In response, many UASs have implemented strategic networking in research, teaching, and infrastructure to overcome resource limitations. This approach also drives the development of RDM structures, often via projects or state-level initiatives. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research supports 14 projects [5] through its funding guideline for RDM at UASs. This initiative led to the establishment of the FDM@HAW network in 2023, connecting these projects. Since its formation, the network has engaged in continuous exchange on RDM development and contributed to events such as Love Data Week, the FORTRAMA conference [6], Volkswagen Foundation's Digital Skills in Science Week [7] and E-Science-Tage [8]. These activities have helped sharpen the network's focus, identify shared priorities and integrate new members. Members contribute ideas, tools and services developed in RDM projects or collaborations - such as the "NFDI Survival Kit" [9] and the "NFDI-N(HAW)igator" [10] - to promote RDM awareness and inform about NFDI on a national scale. In line with NFDI's mission to "improv[e] the possibilities for using data for science and society" [11], FDM@HAW seeks to disseminate knowledge of and strengthen competence in delving into these possibilities. The network provides valuable support to activate a target group that has largely been untapped. Close cooperation between NFDI and FDM@HAW will then contribute to the successful development of a nationwide RDM ecosystem. In the presentation, proposals for cooperation will be outlined. Collocated with a large screen rear-projection stereographic display the PSFC features realtime control of virtual room characteristics and direction of two separate sound channels, smoothly steering them around a configurable soundscape. The PSFC controls an entire sound field, including sound direction, virtual distance, and simulated environment (reverb level, room size and liveness) for each source. It can also configure a dry (DSP-less) switching matrix for direct directionalization. The PSFC speaker dome is about 14 m in diameter, allowing about twenty users at once to comfortably stand or sit near its sweet spot. Emphasis was placed on detailed measurements at the inlet and exit of the last stage guide vane. Two configurations were examined – the first used a guide vane with lean in the last stage and a the second used a guide vane combining both lean and sweep. The experimental results from the two configurations have been compared with data from various design methods, ranging from through-flow to 3D multistage viscous simulations with mixing planes. Despite the challenges in modelling complex rotating blades in a wet steam environment, good agreement between the numerical and experimental results was obtained, and the new stator vane combining lean and sweep achieved the desired increase in reaction at the hub section. However, exceeding of limit values for fine particulate matter PM10 and PM2.5 is still a problem in major German cities. Therefore, fine particulate matter is monitored in Germany by environmental state agencies at fixed stations with certified instruments. These certified instruments are able to deliver reliable and high quality results. However, because of the costs of these certified instruments and the maintenance efforts, only few measurements stations are placed in the cities at places, which are regarded as representative for the air pollution. On the other hand, it is of interest to know the concentration of fine particulate matter in areas and at places, which are not covered by the fixed measurement stations of the environmental state agencies. In this situation citizen science projects started in Germany using low cost sensors for fine particulate matter. In principle, with these low cost sensors citizens could measure fine particulate matter at places and in situations of their interests. However, at that point the question of reliability of the low cost sensor data arises. Therefore the Duesseldorf University of Applied Sciences (HSD) in Germany started a project for the testing and evaluation of low-cost sensors. For this reason 20 low-cost sensor units have been built up based on the SDS 011 sensor of Nova Fitness Inc. within the Laboratory for Environmental Measurement Techniques at HSD. The sensor measurement data can be transferred into a network and can be visualized on a digital map. This testing and evaluation at HSD of the low-cost sensors comprised: • Short term and long term comparison studies within the laboratory and at different urban sites with a certifiedwide range aerosol measurement system (Grimm WRAS). • Short term and long term comparison studies within the laboratory and at different urban sites with mid-cost sensors (Alphasense AN2). • Intercomparison testing and evaluation of sensors of the same production charge. • Intercomparison testing and evaluation of sensors of different production charges. • Testing and evaluation of the sensors at different meteorological conditions. The results of this testing and evaluation will be presented at the conference. Borrowing from the wave-particle duality in physics one could say that there is an originality-effectiveness duality at work for creativity. The paper explores how this tension pervades Amabile's (1997) componential theory of organizational creativity with the components organizational motivation, management practices (including work assignment and work control) and resources. As a method the so called value square (" Wertequadrat ") developed by Helwig (1967) and Schulz von Thun (1998) is used which balances a value with its countervalue. The author identifies a tension of corporate tradition and corporate change for organizational motivation, a tension of skills and challenges for work assignment, a tension of management by control and management by loss of control for work control as well as a tension of organizational efficiency and organizational slack for resources. Additionally different implications of these tensions for the resistance of a company to creativity, for an organizational climate conducive to creativity as well as for resource allocation in creative endeavours are discussed. This means that a problem that is already challenging, namely planning, executing, and controlling logistical processes, gets even more complex and requires aspects of systems thinking to incorporate environmental and social impacts. Classical approaches of teaching, e.g. lectures with presentations and short exercises on closed problems, do not do justice to the complexity and intricacies of the topic sustainability. In such a context, projectbased learning (PBL) where students do group work on open-ended problems with real-world complexity seems to be a more adequate means to teach the subject. The paper describes a PBL course in which students worked on projects to conceptualize micro-depots for parcel delivery in different areas of Düsseldorf. A micro-depot is a temporary storage location in a city from which parcels can be delivered by cargo bikes. The aim was to locate the micro-depot, design the delivery routes, check the feasibility, and calculate the reduction of greenhouse gases and other emissions. The course was taught in cooperation with a partner from the courier, express, and parcel delivery industry. The paper describes the experiences with the course and gives recommendations for a successful implementation of PBL in courses on sustainability. It has been developed by the authors and installed as a mandatory part of the curriculum in three master’s degree programs for engineering students. The participants of the course are postgraduates with different nationalities, mostly German, and different technical backgrounds. They study Mechanical Engineering, Simulation and Experimental Technology, or International Business Engineering. The basic idea of the course concept goes far beyond simply teaching the standards of academic writing and skills for using scientific publications. By using a learnercentered approach, the students get engaged in typical activities around an active attendance of a real conference. Students learn to locate the field of their bachelor thesis or project report in the world of research communities, scientific journals and engineering conferences. They learn about conferences matching their bachelor/project topic. They write a paper complying with common academic standards, submit it to a mock-up conference, and review submissions of their fellow students. Students also produce a poster and have to defend it in a poster session held publicly on the campus. Engineering Conferences is a course on scientific communication and presentation that also aims at the development of other skills and competences needed in the world of modern engineering. Only ten epidemiological studies examined long-term UFP exposure and health effects according to the most recent review from 2019 that included studies until 2017. We systematically reviewed the literature on health effects of long-term exposure to UFP. METHOD [|] Epidemiological studies were searched comprehensively in PubMed and LUDOK (the Swiss literature database on air pollution and health) from January 2017 to September 2023. Original epidemiologic studies were included if they reported on the general or sub-populations, assessed long-term exposure of UFP measures, investigated clinical or preclinical health outcomes and reported a quantifiable measure of association. Internal validity of studies was evaluated with a risk of bias instrument. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conversation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection and supervised by the German Environment Agency (FKZ 3721 61 202 0). RESULTS [|] We identified 53 original studies investigating long-term associations. The vast majority were cohort studies (79.2%) conducted in the general population (62.3%). Half (54.7%) were located in western Europe. UFP was measured and modelled in various ways; more than a third of the studies (41.5%) used land-use regression models. Thirty studies adjusted for at least one co-pollutant. Most identified outcomes were cardiometabolic (43.4%), respiratory (13.2%) and birth outcomes (13.2%). Positive associations with long-term UFP exposure were reported for cardiometabolic, respiratory and birth outcomes for 78.5%, 42.9% and 50.0% of studies, respectively. CONCLUSIONS [|] The evidence base has increased substantially since the publication of the 2019 review. Positive associations were reported, in particular for cardiometabolic outcomes. A1 - Weber, Konradin T1 - Systematic observations of Volcán Turrialba, Costa Rica, with small unmanned aircraft and aerostats (UAVs): the Costa Rican Airborne Research and Technology Applications (CARTA) missions [Abstract] T2 - American Geophysical Union, Fall Meeting 2014 N2 - For several years, the University of Costa Rica, NASA Centers (e.g., JPL, ARC, GSFC/WFF, GRC) & NASA contractors-partners have made regular in situ measurements of aerosols & gases at Turrialba Volcano in Costa Rica, with aerostats (e.g., tethered balloons & kites), & free-flying fixed wing UAVs (e.g., Dragon Eye, Vector Wing 100, DELTA 150), at altitudes up to 12.5Kft ASL within 5km of the summit. Onboard instruments included gas detectors (e.g., SO2, CO2), visible & thermal IR cameras, air samplers, temperature pressure & humidity sensors, particle counters, & a nephelometer. Deployments are timed to support bimonthly overflights of the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) onboard the NASA Terra satellite (26 deployments to date). In situ observations of dilute plume SO2 concentrations (~1-20ppmv), plume dimensions, and associated temperature, pressure, & humidity profiles, validate detailed radiative transfer-based SO2 retrievals, as well as archive-wide ASTER band-ratio SO2 algorithms. Our recent UAV-based CO2 observations confirm high concentrations (e.g., ~3000ppmv max at summit jet), with 1000-1500ppmv flank values, and essentially global background CO2 levels (400ppmv) over distal surroundings. Transient Turrialba He detections (up to 20ppmv) were obtained with a small (~10kg) airborne mass spectrometer on a light aircraft—a UAV version (~3kg) will deploy there soon on the UCR DELTA 500. Thus, these platforms, though small (most payloads <500gm), can perform valuable systematic measurements of potential eruption hazards, as well as of volcano processes. Because they are economical, flexible, and effective, such platforms promise unprecedented capabilities for researchers and responders throughout Central and South America, undertaking volcanic data acquisitions uniquely suited to such small aircraft in close proximity to known hazards, or that were previously only available using full-sized manned aircraft. Due to the wide range of organic working fluids available the fluid selection adds an additional degree of freedom to the early design phase of an ORC process. Despite thermodynamic aspects such as the temperature level of the heat source, other technical, economic and safety aspects have to be considered. For the fluid selection process in this paper, 22 criteria were identified in six main categories while distinguishing between elimination and tolerance criteria. For an ORC design, the suggested method follows a practical engineering approach and can be used as a structured way to limit the number of interesting working fluids before starting a detailed performance analysis of the most promising candidates. For the first time the selection process is applied to a two-stage reference cycle which uses the waste heat of a large reciprocating engine for cogeneration power plants. It consists of a high temperature and a low temperature cycle in which the condensation heat of the high temperature (HT) cycle provides the heat input of the low temperature (LT) cycle. After the fluid selection process the detailed thermodynamic cycle design is carried out with a thermodynamic design tool that also includes a database for organic working fluids. The investigated ORC cycle shows a net thermal efficiency of about 17,4% in the high temperature cycle with Toluene as the working fluid and 6,2% in low temperature cycle with iso-Butane as the working fluid. The electric efficiency of the cogeneration plant increases from 40,4% to 46,97% with the both stages of the two-stage ORC in operation. Collecting data on student behavior and action in these environments raises the question of how personal privacy can be addressed, as students are the most important stakeholder in the process. In our study we propose a simple but powerful approach to enhance student privacy: a switch to turn the data collection on and off. We let the students decide for themselves when they want to stop and go on with the collection of their data. In this paper, we take a closer look at how our students make use of this option and when and how this influences the collected data by exemplarily investigating the data of two of our participants in detail.
