To quantify the influence we developed a probabilistic framework based on polynomial chaos (PC) that propagates stochastic input variables through any computational model. We considered a stochastic E-ρ relationship and a stochastic hip contact force, representing realistic variability of experimental data. Their influence on the prediction of principal strains (ϵ1 and ϵ3) was quantified for one human proximal femur, including sensitivity and reliability analysis. Large variabilities in the principal strain predictions were found in the cortical shell of the femoral neck, with coefficients of variation of ≈40\%. Between 60 and 80\% of the variance in ϵ1 and ϵ3 are attributable to the uncertainty in the E-ρ relationship, while ≈10\% are caused by the load magnitude and 5-30\% by the load direction. Principal strain directions were unaffected by material and loading uncertainties. The antero-superior and medial inferior sides of the neck exhibited the largest probabilities for tensile and compression failure, however all were very small (pf<0.001). In summary, uncertainty quantification with PC has been demonstrated to efficiently and accurately describe the influence of very different stochastic inputs, which increases the credibility and explanatory power of personalized analyses of human proximal femurs.}, language = {en} } @article{FriedrichLoosenLiangetal.2015, author = {Friedrich, Linus and Loosen, Simon and Liang, Ke and Ruess, Martin and Bisagni, Chiara and Schr{\"o}der, Kai-Uwe}, title = {Stacking sequence influence on imperfection sensitivity of cylindrical composite shells under axial compression}, series = {Composite Structures}, volume = {134}, journal = {Composite Structures}, publisher = {Elsevier}, issn = {0263-8223}, doi = {10.1016/j.compstruct.2015.08.132}, pages = {750 -- 761}, year = {2015}, language = {en} } @article{GuoRuess2015, author = {Guo, Yujie and Ruess, Martin}, title = {A layerwise isogeometric approach for NURBS-derived laminate composite shells}, series = {Composite Structures}, volume = {124}, journal = {Composite Structures}, publisher = {Elsevier}, issn = {0263-8223}, doi = {10.1016/j.compstruct.2015.01.012}, pages = {300 -- 309}, year = {2015}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{GuoRuess2015, author = {Guo, Yujie and Ruess, Martin}, title = {Isogeometric Weak Coupling of Shell Structures}, series = {56th AIAA/ASCE/AHS/ASC Structures, Structural Dynamics, and Materials Conference 2015, Kissimmee, Florida, USA, 5 - 9 January 2015}, booktitle = {56th AIAA/ASCE/AHS/ASC Structures, Structural Dynamics, and Materials Conference 2015, Kissimmee, Florida, USA, 5 - 9 January 2015}, publisher = {Curran}, address = {Red Hook}, isbn = {978-1-62410-342-1}, doi = {10.2514/6.2015-0965}, pages = {1 -- 14}, year = {2015}, language = {en} } @article{ElhaddadZanderBogetal.2018, author = {Elhaddad, Mohamed and Zander, Nils and Bog, Tino and Kudela, L{\´a}szl{\´o} and Kollmannsberger, Stefan and Kirschke, Jan and Baum, Thomas and Ruess, Martin and Rank, Ernst}, title = {Multi-level hp-finite cell method for embedded interface problems with application in biomechanics}, series = {International Journal for Numerical Methods in Biomedical Engineering}, volume = {34}, journal = {International Journal for Numerical Methods in Biomedical Engineering}, number = {4}, publisher = {Wiley}, issn = {2040-7947}, doi = {10.1002/cnm.2951}, year = {2018}, abstract = {This work presents a numerical discretization technique for solving 3-dimensional material interface problems involving complex geometry without conforming mesh generation. The finite cell method (FCM), which is a high-order fictitious domain approach, is used for the numerical approximation of the solution without a boundary-conforming mesh. Weak discontinuities at material interfaces are resolved by using separate FCM meshes for each material sub-domain and weakly enforcing the interface conditions between the different meshes. Additionally, a recently developed hierarchical hp-refinement scheme is used to locally refine the FCM meshes to resolve singularities and local solution features at the interfaces. Thereby, higher convergence rates are achievable for nonsmooth problems. A series of numerical experiments with 2- and 3-dimensional benchmark problems is presented, showing that the proposed hp-refinement scheme in conjunction with the weak enforcement of the interface conditions leads to a significant improvement of the convergence rates, even in the presence of singularities. Finally, the proposed technique is applied to simulate a vertebra-implant model. The application showcases the method's potential as an accurate simulation tool for biomechanical problems involving complex geometry, and it demonstrates its flexibility in dealing with different To prepare leading edge serrations for industrial application, two obstacles remain to be addressed. First is a combined analysis of the aeroacoustic and the aerodynamic performance of leading edge serrations to develop optimum designs. Second is the need to examine the transferability of the known effects of leading edge serrations from a single aerofoil to full rotors, which are considered to be the final area of application. This thesis aims to assist in the transfer of a well-investigated aerofoil with serrated leading edges from the rigid to the rotating domain. With this purpose, a single aerofoil type is selected and thoroughly analysed, experimentally and numerically, to generate a reliable data basis for aerodynamic performance and noise reduction capability. Aside from gathering information on the overall performance, the spatial distribution of the noise sources is localised, and the spectral composition of the noise reduction is found to follow a clearly defined scaling law. Aerodynamically, generated vortices are found to be responsible for a complex three-dimensional separation mechanism of the leading edge serrations, causing a delay of stall. The generated data basis is then used to design low-pressure axial fans of minimum complexity by keeping the initially chosen aerofoil type. The experimentally identified noise reduction mechanisms for the serrated axial fans are found to be more diverse than the single aerofoil and highly dependent on the inflow conditions and the operation point of the fan. A highly similar pattern for the spectral scaling of the noise reduction supports the finding that at optimum operation conditions, the previously identified noise reduction mechanisms for the single aerofoils are transferable to the rotating domain. On the other hand, additional aerodynamic mechanisms are found to dominate the noise reduction for the instability region of the fan, also contributing to reduced blade-to-blade interaction effects. Moreover, the blade-tip leakage flow is altered by delaying the development of coherent structures. The next step towards a more general description of the aeroacoustic and aerodynamic dependencies is developing a comprehensive model based on artificial neural networks. This model allows a combined analysis of the aerodynamic and acoustic performance of rotors with serrated leading edges and shows an accurate prediction of the overall performance and the spectral composition of the radiated noise. It also enables the development of multi-objective optima for serration designs and motivates further studies into the generalisability of the observed trends. Furthermore, the developed model represents a feasible tool to create tailored serration designs for maximum efficiency in both aeroacoustics and aerodynamics, contributing to the development of future low-noise fans and rotating machinery.}, language = {en} } @techreport{DeckertSchomakerKnappitsch2020, author = {Deckert, Carsten and Schomaker, Rahel M. and Knappitsch, Eithne}, title = {Culture and Entrepreneurship: The Political, Social and Individual Influences on Opportunity Entrepreneurs}, publisher = {Hochschule D{\"u}sseldorf}, address = {D{\"u}sseldorf}, organization = {Hochschule D{\"u}sseldorf}, issn = {2627-8375}, doi = {10.20385/2627-8375_3}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:hbz:due62-opus-23837}, pages = {33}, year = {2020}, abstract = {The impact of culture on entrepreneurship is a widely accepted phenomenon. Cultural factors influence entrepreneurship via different mechanisms on the macro-, meso-, and micro-level of a country. Building on existing research, we draw a clear link between national cultural dimensions and entrepreneurship, using a new model that arranges different cultural dimensions in groups based on their particular function: political, social, or individual (PSI-model) and that distinguishes between values and practices where relevant. The PSI-model provides a coherent theoretical framework on which different cultural dimensions and their impact on entrepreneurship can be analysed, allowing for particular attention to be drawn to social practices and social values. This paper contributes to a better understanding of the relationship between culture and entrepreneurship, providing empirical evidence of how specific cultural dimensions influence entrepreneurship. The findings are of relevance from a policy perspective and can be used to generate practical recommendations for national institutions interested in promoting entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial activities. This results in an increasing demand for mobility solutions while it is also worldwide aimed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This paper summarizes the results of a comparative study concerning the greenhouse gas emissions (based on carbon footprint) caused by alternative urban passenger transportation systems. The emissions for the vehicles and their infrastructure are analyszed over the entire life cycle from manufacturing up to their end of life. An existing cable car sytem in La Paz, Bolivia was analysed and evaluated in comparison to other modes of transportation such as small busses, large busses and a tram. According to the system definitions and the considered balance framework the study shows that beside the use of the systems the materials and the manufacturing as well as the infrastructure have a significant impact on the total emissions over the life cycle. To enable a computational treatment, the measured shapes of the eggs are parametrized by idealizing them in terms of elementary geometric forms. As the egg shapes show a variation within each class, "mean" shapes are considered. The sink velocities are obtained through the computationally obtained drag coefficients. The latter are defined by means of steady-state calculations. Predicted sink velocities are compared with the measured ones. It is observed that the calculated values show a better agreement with the measurements, for ASC and TRI, compared to the theoretical sink values delivered by the Stokes theory. However, the observed agreement is still found not to be very satisfactory, indicating the role of further parameters, such as the uncertainties in the characterization of egg shapes or flocculation effects even in clean tap water.}, language = {en} } @article{PfeiffelmannBenimJoos2021, author = {Pfeiffelmann, Bj{\"o}rn and Benim, Ali Cemal and Joos, Franz}, title = {Water-Cooled Thermoelectric Generators for Improved Net Output Power: A Review}, series = {Energies}, volume = {14}, journal = {Energies}, number = {24}, publisher = {MDPI}, issn = {1996-1073}, doi = {10.3390/en14248329}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:hbz:due62-opus-37323}, year = {2021}, abstract = {Thermoelectric generators (TEGs) have the ability to convert waste heat into electrical energy under unfavorable conditions and are becoming increasingly popular in academia, but have not yet achieved a broad commercial success, due to the still comparably low efficiency. To increase the efficiency and economic viability of TEGs, research is performed on the materials on one hand and on the system connection on the other. In the latter case, the net output power of the cooling system plays a key role. At first glance, passive cooling seems preferable to active cooling because it does not affect the net electrical output power. However, as shown in the present review, the active cooling is to be preferred for net output power. The situation is similar in air and water-cooling. Even though air-cooling is easier to set up, the water-cooling should be preferred to achieve higher net output power. It is shown that microchannel cooling has similar hydraulic performance to conventional cooling and inserts increase the net output power of TEG. As the review reveals that active water-cooling should be the method of choice to achieve high net output power, it also shows that a careful optimization is necessary to exploit the potential.}, language = {en} } @article{SenthurAnandRameshKumaretal.2022, author = {Senthur, N.S. and Anand, C and Ramesh Kumar, M and Elumalai, P.V. and Shajahan, Mohamed Iqbal and Benim, Ali Cemal and Nasr, Emad Abouel and Hussein, H.M.A. and Parthasarathy, M.}, title = {Influence of cobalt chromium nanoparticles in homogeneous charge compression ignition engine operated with citronella oil}, series = {Energy Science \& Engineering}, volume = {10}, journal = {Energy Science \& Engineering}, number = {4}, publisher = {Wiley}, issn = {2050-0505}, doi = {10.1002/ese3.1088}, pages = {1251 -- 1263}, year = {2022}, language = {en} } @article{BenimCanalBoke2021, author = {Benim, Ali Cemal and Canal, Cansu Deniz and Boke, Yakup Erhan}, title = {A Validation Study for RANS Based Modelling of Swirling Pulverized Fuel Flames}, series = {Energies}, volume = {14}, journal = {Energies}, number = {21}, publisher = {MDPI}, issn = {1996-1073}, doi = {10.3390/en14217323}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:hbz:due62-opus-37365}, year = {2021}, abstract = {A swirling pulverized coal flame is computationally investigated. A Eulerian-Lagrangian formulation is used to describe the two-phase flow. Turbulence is modelled within a RANS (Reynolds averaged numerical simulation) framework. Four turbulence viscosity- (TV) based models, namely the standard k-ε model, realizable k-ε model, renormalization group theory k-ε model, and the shear stress transport k-ω model are used. In addition, a Reynolds stress transport model (RSM) is employed. The models are assessed by comparing the predicted velocity fields with the measurements of other authors. In terms of overall average values, the agreement of the predictions to the measurements is observed to be within the range 20-40\%. A better performance of the RSM compared to the TV models is observed, with a nearly twice as better overall agreement to the experiments, particularly for the swirl velocity. In the second part of the investigation, the resolution of the discrete particle phase in modelling the turbulent particle dispersion (TPD) and particle size distribution (SD) is investigated. Using the discrete random walk model for the TPD, it is shown that even five random walks are sufficient for an accuracy that is quite high, with a less than 1\% mean deviation from the solution obtained by thirty random walks. The approximation of the measured SD is determined by a continuous Rosin-Rammler distribution function, and inaccuracies that can occur in its subsequent discretization are demonstrated and discussed. An investigation on the resolution of the SD by discrete particle size classes (SC) indicates that 12 SC are required for an accuracy with a less than 1\% mean deviation from the solution with 18 SC. Although these numbers may not necessarily be claimed to be sufficiently universal, they may serve as guidance, at least for SD with similar characteristics}, language = {en} } @article{DenizCanalBokeAydinetal.2021, author = {Deniz Canal, Cansu and Boke, Yakup Erhan and Aydin, Ozer and Benim, Ali Cemal}, title = {COMPUTATIONAL ANALYSIS OF PULVERIZED COAL CO-FIRING WITH BIOMASS IN 150MWe UNIT OF TUNCBILEK THERMAL POWER PLANT}, series = {Isi Bilimi ve Teknigi Dergisi - Journal of Thermal Science and Technology}, volume = {41}, journal = {Isi Bilimi ve Teknigi Dergisi - Journal of Thermal Science and Technology}, number = {1}, publisher = {Turkish Society for Thermal Sciences \& Technology}, issn = {1300-3615}, doi = {10.47480/isibted.979314}, pages = {37 -- 50}, year = {2021}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{WinnitzkiSpiegelAdam2021, author = {Winnitzki, Michael and Spiegel, Thomas and Adam, Mario}, title = {Ans{\"a}tze des maschinellen Lernens f{\"u}r die Prognose des Strombedarfes von Ortsnetzstationen als Beitrag f{\"u}r Steuerungsaufgaben in der Niederspannung. The aim of forecasting is to determine future demand based on data from the past. The use of a specific method is not always easy and depends on a number of factors. To help prospective engineers find the most suitable forecasting method for a specific problem, a forecasting game was developed and then evaluated. The paper describes the design and the evaluation of the forecasting game. In order to provide an overview of existing forecasting methods, the first part of the paper examined the mathematical fundamentals of eight different forecasting methods and outlined the requirements for their application. The second part of the paper describes the creation of a forecasting game in which prospective engineers can learn how to determine the appropriate forecasting method for specific scenarios. In total, five scenarios covering the three different demand patterns (linear/stationary, trend and seasonal) as well as the forecast quality methods were developed and can be played through. For each scenario, the player has to choose the most appropriate forecasting method for a specific problem based on a self-created task description. To make the game as realistic as possible, a fictional company with a background story was designed. The last part was about the evaluation of the forecasting game. For the evaluation, a student survey to gather the opinions of the students was conducted. The results of the student survey show an overall positive evaluation of the simulation game by the students. However, the test also showed that the game takes a certain amount of time. Since only 15 of the approximately 30 students who tested the game participated in the evaluation, the results are not significant.}, language = {en} } @misc{OPUS4-705, title = {471 - Fachbereichsordnung f{\"u}r den Fachbereich Maschinenbau und Verfahrenstechnik der Hochschule D{\"u}sseldorf vom 29.08.2016}, address = {D{\"u}sseldorf}, organization = {Hochschule D{\"u}sseldorf}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:hbz:due62-opus-9818}, pages = {12}, year = {2016}, abstract = {Aufgrund der \S\S 2 Abs. 4 S. 1, 26 Abs. 3 des Gesetzes {\"u}ber die Hochschulen des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen (HG NRW) vom 16.09.2014 (GV.
