Listening to music before, during, or after sports is a common phenomenon, yet its functions and effects on performance, cognition, and behavior remain to be investigated. In this study we present a novel approach to the role of music in sports and exercise that focuses on the notion of musical self-enhancement (Elvers, 2016). We derived the following hypotheses from this framework: listening to motivational music will (i) enhance self-evaluative cognition, (ii) improve performance in a ball game, and (iii) evoke greater risk-taking behavior. To evaluate the hypotheses, we conducted a between-groups experiment (N = 150) testing the effectiveness of both an experimenter playlist and a participant-selected playlist in comparison to a no-music control condition. All participants performed a ball-throwing task developed by Decharms and Dav{\´e} (1965), consisting of two parts: First, participants threw the ball from fixed distances into a funnel basket. During this task, performance was measured. In the second part, the participants themselves chose distances from the basket, which allowed their risk-taking behavior to be assessed. The results indicate that listening to motivational music led to greater risk taking but did not improve ball-throwing performance. This effect was more pronounced in male participants and among those who listened to their own playlists. Furthermore, self-selected music enhanced state self-esteem in participants who were performing well but not in those who were performing poorly. We also discuss further implications for the notion of musical self-enhancement. // Listening to music before, during, or after sports is a common phenomenon, yet its functions and effects on performance, cognition, and behavior remain to be investigated. Until now, little has been written about the processes underlying the selection of music in daily life. The present study aimed to disentangle some of the complex processes among the listener, situation, and functions of music listening involved in music selection. Utilizing the experience sampling method, data were collected from 119 participants using a smartphone application. For 10 consecutive days, participants received 14 prompts using stratified-random sampling throughout the day and reported on their music-listening behavior. Statistical learning procedures on multilevel regression models and multilevel structural equation modeling were used to determine the most important predictors and analyze mediation processes between person, situation, functions of listening, and music selection. Results revealed that the features of music selected in daily life were predominantly determined by situational characteristics, whereas consistent individual differences were of minor importance. Functions of music listening were found to act as a mediator between characteristics of the situation and music-selection behavior. We further observed several significant random effects, which indicated that individuals differed in how situational variables affected their music selection behavior. Our findings suggest a need to shift the focus of music-listening research from individual differences to situational influences, including potential person-situation interactions.}, language = {en} } @article{LuizardSteffensWeinzierl2020, author = {Luizard, Paul and Steffens, Jochen and Weinzierl, Stefan}, title = {Singing in different rooms: Common or individual adaptation patterns to the acoustic conditions?}, series = {The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America}, volume = {147}, journal = {The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America}, number = {2}, publisher = {ASA}, doi = {10.1121/10.0000715}, year = {2020}, language = {en} } @article{vanRiessenAghamiriStreck2021, author = {van Rießen, Anne and Aghamiri, Kathrin and Streck, Rebekka}, title = {Einblicke in pandemische Alltage der Kinder- und Jugendhilfe oder: Was macht eigentlich 'gute' Soziale Arbeit aus?}, series = {Forum f{\"u}r Kinder- und Jugendarbeit}, volume = {37}, journal = {Forum f{\"u}r Kinder- und Jugendarbeit}, number = {3/4}, publisher = {Verb. The aim is to provide a safe and environmentally acceptable micro-scale heat engine, which can be developed, implemented and used in university labs for the education of students as well as for small research projects. The test rig allows the support of several learning outcomes on a multi-disciplinary level particularly for the implementation and simulation of small power systems. Special attention was given to the organic working fluid characteristics and its selection process. In addition to the above-mentioned performance goals, favourable safety properties and low global warming potential were decisive in the selection of the novel organic fluid called 3M™ Novec™ 649. The performance and the fluid behaviour of Novec 649 in a micro-scale power cycle are of major interest and the research goal for the test rig presented in this paper. Due to the expected power output of 1 kW, a scroll expander was chosen as the generator drive for the micro plant. In order to design the major parts of the ORC, the thermodynamic simulation software EBSILON®Professional was used. The supply temperature was set to 140 °C. As a result of the simulation, feasible expander inlet pressures spread from 5.5 bar to 8.5 bar. This leads to thermal efficiencies of the ORC in the order of 5 \%. Adding a recuperator to the cycle system decreases the operating pressure range but in the end, the thermal efficiency can be increased by 1.5 \%-points up to 6.2 \%. Finally, an automated control concept is introduced, where the pump is controlled via the fill level measurement system.}, language = {en} } @article{DeckertKalefeldKutz2020, author = {Deckert, Carsten and Kalefeld, Jannik and Kutz, Martin}, title = {Gesch{\"a}ftsmodelle f{\"u}r das Internet der Dinge: Welche Gesch{\"a}ftsmodellinnovation passt zum Unternehmen?}, series = {ZWF Zeitschrift f{\"u}r wirtschaftlichen Fabrikbetrieb}, volume = {115}, journal = {ZWF Zeitschrift f{\"u}r wirtschaftlichen Fabrikbetrieb}, number = {12}, publisher = {Hanser}, issn = {0947-0085}, doi = {10.3139/104.112265}, pages = {928 -- 933}, year = {2020}, language = {de} } @article{SchittkowskiRulandLaudenschlegeretal.2018, author = {Schittkowski, Julian and Ruland, Holger and Laudenschleger, Daniel and Girod, Kai and K{\"a}hler, Kevin and Kaluza, Stefan and Muhler, Martin and Schl{\"o}gl, Robert}, title = {Methanol Synthesis from Steel Mill Exhaust Gases: Challenges for the Industrial Cu/ZnO/Al 2 O 3 Catalyst}, series = {Chemie Ingenieur Technik}, volume = {90}, journal = {Chemie Ingenieur Technik}, number = {10}, publisher = {Wiley}, issn = {1522-2640}, doi = {10.1002/cite.201800017}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:hbz:due62-opus-34526}, pages = {1419 -- 1429}, year = {2018}, language = {en} } @article{UnterfraunerVoigtHofer2021, author = {Unterfrauner, Elisabeth and Voigt, Christian and Hofer, Margit}, title = {The effect of maker and entrepreneurial education on self-efficacy and creativity}, series = {Entrepreneurship Education}, volume = {4}, journal = {Entrepreneurship Education}, number = {4}, publisher = {Springer Nature}, issn = {2520-8152}, doi = {10.1007/s41959-021-00060-w}, pages = {403 -- 424}, year = {2021}, language = {en} } @article{UnterfraunerVoigt2017, author = {Unterfrauner, Elisabeth and Voigt, Christian}, title = {Makers' ambitions to do socially valuable things}, series = {The Design Journal}, volume = {20}, journal = {The Design Journal}, number = {sup1}, publisher = {Taylor \& Francis}, issn = {1756-3062}, doi = {10.1080/14606925.2017.1352835}, pages = {3317 -- 3325}, year = {2017}, language = {en} } @article{SeebacherVanaVoigtetal.2021, author = {Seebacher, Lisa M. and Vana, Irina and Voigt, Christian and Tschank, Juliet}, title = {Is Science for Everyone? The implementation of innovative control and optimization algorithms, such as Nonlinear Model Predictive Control, requires an online estimation of operating states of biogas plants. This state estimation allows for optimal control and operating decisions according to the actual state of a plant. In this paper such a state estimator is developed using a calibrated simulation model of a full-scale biogas plant, which is based on the Anaerobic Digestion Model No.1. The use of advanced pattern recognition methods shows that model states can be predicted from basic online measurements such as biogas production, CH4 and CO2 content in the biogas, pH value and substrate feed volume of known substrates. The machine learning methods used are trained and evaluated using synthetic data created with the biogas plant model simulating over a wide range of possible plant operating regions. Currently, there are no means available to detect ash in flight as the particles are too fine (radii < 30 μm) for on-board radar detection and, even in good visibility, ash clouds are difficult or impossible to detect by eye. The economic cost and societal impact of the April/May 2010 Icelandic eruption of Eyjafjallaj{\"o}kull generated renewed interest in finding ways to identify airborne volcanic ash in order to keep airspace open and avoid aircraft groundings. We have designed and built a bi-spectral, fast-sampling, uncooled infrared camera device (AVOID) to examine its ability to detect volcanic ash from commercial jet aircraft at distances of more than 50 km ahead. Here we report results of an experiment conducted over the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of France, confirming the ability of the device to detect and quantify volcanic ash in an artificial ash cloud created by dispersal of volcanic ash from a second aircraft. A third aircraft was used to measure the ash in situ using optical particle counters. The cloud was composed of very fine ash (mean radii ~10 μm) collected from Iceland immediately after the Eyjafjallaj{\"o}kull eruption and had a vertical thickness of ~200 m, a width of ~2 km and length of between 2 and 12 km. Concentrations of ~200 μg m(-3) were identified by AVOID at distances from ~20 km to ~70 km. For the first time, airborne remote detection of volcanic ash has been successfully demonstrated from a long-range flight test aircraft.}, language = {en} } @article{SaeedrashedBenim2019, author = {Saeedrashed, Younis Saida and Benim, Ali Cemal}, title = {Validation Methods of Geometric 3D-CityGML Data for Urban Wind Simulations}, series = {E3S Web of Conferences}, volume = {128}, journal = {E3S Web of Conferences}, publisher = {edp sciences}, issn = {2267-1242}, doi = {10.1051/e3sconf/201912810006}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:hbz:due62-opus-27906}, year = {2019}, language = {en} } @article{BenimCicekEker2018, author = {Benim, Ali Cemal and Cicek, Aydin and Eker, Arif Mert}, title = {A numerical analysis of the thermohydraulics of an EGS project in Turkey}, series = {MATEC Web of Conferences}, volume = {240}, journal = {MATEC Web of Conferences}, publisher = {edp sciences}, issn = {2261-236X}, doi = {10.1051/matecconf/201824005001}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:hbz:due62-opus-27910}, year = {2018}, language = {en} } @article{PfeiffelmannDiederichGueletal.2019, author = {Pfeiffelmann, Bj{\"o}rn and Diederich, Michael and G{\"u}l, Fethi and Benim, Ali Cemal and Hamberger, Andreas and Heese, Markus}, title = {Analysis of combustion, heat and fluid flow in a biomass furnace}, series = {E3S Web of Conferences}, volume = {128}, journal = {E3S Web of Conferences}, publisher = {edp sciences}, issn = {2267-1242}, doi = {10.1051/e3sconf/201912803003}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:hbz:due62-opus-27880}, year = {2019}, language = {en} } @article{PfeiffelmannOezmanBenimetal.2019, author = {Pfeiffelmann, Bj{\"o}rn and {\"O}zman, Cansu and Benim, Ali Cemal and Joos, Franz}, title = {Variable temperature effects on TEG performance}, series = {E3S Web of Conferences}, volume = {128}, journal = {E3S Web of Conferences}, publisher = {edp sciences}, issn = {2267-1242}, doi = {10.1051/e3sconf/201912807004}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:hbz:due62-opus-27893}, year = {2019}, language = {en} } @article{BenimDiederichGuel2018, author = {Benim, Ali Cemal and Diederich, Michael and G{\"u}l, Fethi}, title = {Prediction and measurement of the aerodynamic performance of a wind turbine}, series = {MATEC Web of Conferences}, volume = {240}, journal = {MATEC Web of Conferences}, publisher = {edp sciences}, issn = {2261-236X}, doi = {10.1051/matecconf/201824004001}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:hbz:due62-opus-27925}, year = {2018}, language = {en} } @article{HeinzeFehselJappe2019, author = {Heinze, Thomas and Fehsel, Imke and Jappe, Arlette}, title = {Reformimpulse durch hochschulpolitische Beratung? Rituals are also common in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). In contrast to OCD, the proposed associations between rituals and intrusive thoughts/appearance preoccupation have not been empirically investigated for BDD. We examined if the assumed effect of gazing rituals on attractiveness ratings exists and if it is associated with dissociation. In an experiment, we asked N = 65 non-clinical females to focus on the nose of a photographed face at pre- and post-test. The extensive amounts of frequently interacting cellular building blocks and their inherent multifunctionality permits highly adaptive behavior and obstructs a purely reductionist approach. Recently, it became evident that this extension consists of two distinct substructures, designated lamellipodium and lamellum, which differ significantly in their kinetic and kinematic properties as well as their biochemical composition. We developed a stochastic two-dimensional computer simulation that includes chemical reaction kinetics, G-actin diffusion, and filament transport to investigate the formation of growing actin networks in migrating cells. Model parameters were chosen based on experimental data or theoretical considerations. In this work, we demonstrate the system's ability to form two distinct networks by self-organization. We found a characteristic transition in mean filament length as well as a distinct maximum in depolymerization flux, both within the first 1-2 microm. The separation into two distinct substructures was found to be extremely robust with respect to initial conditions and variation of model parameters. We quantitatively investigated the complex interplay between ADF/cofilin and tropomyosin and propose a plausible mechanism that leads to spatial separation of, respectively, ADF/cofilin- or tropomyosin-dominated compartments. Tropomyosin was found to play an important role in stabilizing the lamellar actin network. In contrast to classical man-made machines, much of the cellular organization originates from inherent self-assembly and self-organization allowing a high degree of autonomy for various functional units. Recent experimental and theoretical studies revealed numerous examples of cytoskeleton components that arrange and organize in a self-regulative way. In the present review we want to shortly summarize some of the principle mechanisms that are able to inherently trigger and regulate the cytoskeleton organization. Although taken individually most of these regulative principles are rather simple with intuitively predictable consequences, combinations of two or more of these mechanisms can quickly give rise to very complex, unexpected behavior and might even be able to explain the formation of different functional units out of a common pool of available building blocks.}, language = {en} } @article{StuhrmannHuberKaes2011, author = {Stuhrmann, Bj{\"o}rn and Huber, Florian and K{\"a}s, Josef}, title = {Robust organizational principles of protrusive biopolymer networks in migrating living cells}, series = {Plos One}, volume = {6}, journal = {Plos One}, number = {1}, publisher = {Public Library of Science (PLoS)}, issn = {1932-6203}, doi = {10.1371/journal.pone.0014471}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:hbz:due62-opus-34901}, year = {2011}, abstract = {Cell migration is associated with the dynamic protrusion of a thin actin-based cytoskeletal extension at the cell front, which has been shown to consist of two different substructures, the leading lamellipodium and the subsequent lamellum. While the formation of the lamellipodium is increasingly well understood, organizational principles underlying the emergence of the lamellum are just beginning to be unraveled. We report here on a 1D mathematical model which describes the reaction-diffusion processes of a polarized actin network in steady state, and reproduces essential characteristics of the lamellipodium-lamellum system. We observe a steep gradient in filament lengths at the protruding edge, a local depolymerization maximum a few microns behind the edge, as well as a differential dominance of the network destabilizer ADF/cofilin and the stabilizer tropomyosin. We identify simple and robust organizational principles giving rise to the derived network characteristics, uncoupled from the specifics of any molecular implementation, and thus plausibly valid across cell types. An analysis of network length dependence on physico-chemical system parameters implies that to limit array treadmilling to cellular dimensions, network growth has to be truncated by mechanisms other than aging-induced depolymerization, e.g., by myosin-associated network dissociation at the transition to the cell body. Although it is known that cytoskeletal coordination is vital for cell function, the mechanisms by which cross-linking proteins coordinate actin and microtubule activities remain poorly understood. In particular, it is unknown how the distinct mechanical properties of different actin architectures modulate the outcome of actin-microtubule interactions. To address this question, we engineered the protein TipAct, which links growing microtubule ends via end-binding proteins to actin filaments. We show that growing microtubules can be captured and guided by stiff actin bundles, leading to global actin-microtubule alignment. Conversely, growing microtubule ends can transport, stretch and bundle individual actin filaments, thereby globally defining actin filament organization. Our results provide a physical basis to understand actin-microtubule cross-talk, and reveal that a simple cross-linker can enable a mechanical feedback between actin and microtubule organization that is relevant to diverse biological contexts.}, language = {en} }
