It has been developed by the authors and installed as a mandatory part of the curriculum in three master's degree programs for engineering students. The participants of the course are postgraduates with different nationalities, mostly German, and different technical backgrounds. They study Mechanical Engineering, Simulation and Experimental Technology, or International Business Engineering. The basic idea of the course concept goes far beyond simply teaching the standards of academic writing and skills for using scientific publications. By using a learnercentered approach, the students get engaged in typical activities around an active attendance of a real conference. Students learn to locate the field of their bachelor thesis or project report in the world of research communities, scientific journals and engineering conferences. They learn about conferences matching their bachelor/project topic. They write a paper complying with common academic standards, submit it to a mock-up conference, and review submissions of their fellow students. Students also produce a poster and have to defend it in a poster session held publicly on the campus. Engineering Conferences is a course on scientific communication and presentation that also aims at the development of other skills and competences needed in the world of modern engineering.}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{ZielkeBernstCrombachetal.2018, author = {Zielke, Thomas and Bernst, Irina and Crombach, Tobias and Becker, Martin and Lippel, Jens}, title = {WHAT CAN BE LEARNED BY GRADING ANALYTICS?}, series = {INTED 2018: 12th International Technology, Education and Development Conference : 5-7 March, 2018, Valencia (Spain) : conference proceedings}, volume = {12th International Technology, Education and Development Conference}, booktitle = {INTED 2018: 12th International Technology, Education and Development Conference : 5-7 March, 2018, Valencia (Spain) : conference proceedings}, editor = {G{\´o}mez Chova, Luis and L{\´o}pez Mart{\´i}nez, A. and Candel Torres, I.}, publisher = {IATED Academy}, address = {Valencia, Spain}, isbn = {978-84-697-9480-7}, doi = {10.21125/inted.2018.0593}, pages = {3097 -- 3106}, year = {2018}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{ZhaoMeuterNunnetal.2012, author = {Zhao, Kun and Meuter, Mirko and Nunn, Christian and Muller, Dennis and Muller-Schneiders, Stefan and Pauli, Josef}, title = {A novel multi-lane detection and tracking system}, series = {2012 IEEE Intelligent Vehicles Symposium (IV)}, booktitle = {2012 IEEE Intelligent Vehicles Symposium (IV)}, publisher = {IEEE}, isbn = {978-1-4673-2119-8}, doi = {10.1109/IVS.2012.6232168}, pages = {1084 -- 1089}, year = {2012}, language = {en} } @article{ZerrerPressmannPuschmannetal.2026, author = {Zerrer, Patrick and Pressmann, Paul and Puschmann, Cornelius and Krieter, Philipp}, title = {Beyond the Black Box: A Multimodal Approach to Understanding In-App Communication}, series = {Medien \& Kommunikationswissenschaft}, volume = {74}, journal = {Medien \& Kommunikationswissenschaft}, number = {1}, publisher = {Nomos Verlag}, issn = {1615-634X}, doi = {10.5771/1615-634X-2026-1-31}, pages = {31 -- 51}, year = {2026}, abstract = {Mobile devices are increasingly central as sources of up-to-date information, making the precise recording of information behavior on these devices more relevant for research. Established methods of automated data collection are reaching their limits when capturing in-app communication, such as political content within social media applications. The first case study focuses on identifying relevant exposure across different apps on a mobile device using app tracking and screen recordings. The second case study focuses on linking exposure to seen content and deriving respective content features to obtain an enriched dataset. Virtual sets typically use static virtual elements or animated objects with predefined behavior so that actors can practice their performance and errors can be corrected in the post production. With the demand for inexpensive live recording and interactive TV productions, virtual objects will be dynamically rendered at arbitrary positions that cannot be predicted by the actor. Perceptive aids have to be employed to support a natural interaction with these objects. In our work we study the effect of haptic feedback for a simple form of interaction. Actors are equipped with a custom built haptic belt and get vibrotactile feedback during a small navigational task (path following). We present a prototype of a wireless vibrotactile feedback device and a small framework for evaluating haptic feedback in a virtual set environment. Hence, the perception chain for autonomous driving is safeguarded against perturbations by imposing exaggerated optical quality requirements. Due to the non-linear coupling of optical elements, system requirements of camera-based Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) can not be easily decomposed into individual part tolerances of the objective lens and the windscreen. This holds true for intensity-based part measurements, e.g. slanted edge measurements according to ISO12233, which can fundamentally not capture interference effects of the complex light field. Instead wavefront-based part measurements are required. Unfortunately, state-of-the-art wavefront measurement techniques are limited by the spanned sensitive area of the Shack-Hartmann lenslet array or the aperture stop of a corresponding interferometrical setup, respectively. Further, both measurements are limited by using collimated light only, whereas the target application has a large (angular) field of view, requiring many different measurements. We address those bottlenecks by proposing a novel wavefront aberration measurement procedure based on the Background Oriented Schlieren (BOS) method utilizing image auto-correlation. We analytically derive the governing equations for determining the Zernike coefficients of a wavefront aberration map in the knowledge of the local refractive power map obtained by a high-resolution BOS measurement. Furthermore, we experimentally demonstrate the feasibility of the measurement technique. Applying this novel method yields the promise of affordable wavefront aberration measurements only requiring a high-resolution camera and a sophisticated alignment strategy.}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{WolfGaidaStuhlsatzetal.2010, author = {Wolf, Christian and Gaida, Daniel and Stuhlsatz, Andr{\´e} and McLoone, S. and Bongards, Michael}, title = {A Comparison of Performance of Advanced Pattern Recognition Methods for Organic Acid Prediction in Biogas Plants Using UV/vis Spectroscopic Online-Measurements}, series = {Proceedings of the 2010 International Conference on Life System Modeling and Simulation (LSMS), Wuxi, China, 2010}, booktitle = {Proceedings of the 2010 International Conference on Life System Modeling and Simulation (LSMS), Wuxi, China, 2010}, year = {2010}, language = {en} } @article{WolfGaidaStuhlsatzetal.2013, author = {Wolf, Christian and Gaida, Daniel and Stuhlsatz, Andr{\´e} and Ludwig, Thomas and McLoone, Se{\´a}n and Bongards, Michael}, title = {Predicting organic acid concentration from UV/vis spectrometry measurements - a comparison of machine learning techniques}, series = {Transactions of the Institute of Measurement and Control}, volume = {35}, journal = {Transactions of the Institute of Measurement and Control}, number = {1}, publisher = {sage journals}, doi = {10.1177/0142331211403797}, pages = {5 -- 15}, year = {2013}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{WoldeckeMarinosGeiger2013, author = {Woldecke, Bjorn and Marinos, Dionysios and Geiger, Christian}, title = {Poster: MagicLensVS - Towards a flexible framework for quick setup of visual feedback in a virtual studio}, series = {2013 IEEE Symposium on 3D User Interfaces (3DUI), 16.03.2013 - 17.03.2013, Orlando}, booktitle = {2013 IEEE Symposium on 3D User Interfaces (3DUI), 16.03.2013 - 17.03.2013, Orlando}, publisher = {IEEE}, isbn = {978-1-4673-6098-2}, doi = {10.1109/3DUI.2013.6550239}, pages = {183 -- 184}, year = {2013}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{WohlmacherMertlKlapperichetal.2022, author = {Wohlmacher, Bernhard and Mertl, Fabian and Klapperich, Holger and Huldtgren, Alina}, title = {Hybrid Ludo: Combination of a Tangible UI for Seniors and a Web-based Ludo Game}, series = {Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies for Ageing Well and e-Health, April 23-25, 2022}, booktitle = {Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies for Ageing Well and e-Health, April 23-25, 2022}, editor = {Ziefle, Martina and Mulvenna, Maurice and Maciaszek, Leszek}, publisher = {SciTePress}, isbn = {978-989-758-566-1}, issn = {2184-4984}, doi = {10.5220/0011069500003188}, pages = {283 -- 290}, year = {2022}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{WohlmacherKlapperichMertleetal.2023, author = {Wohlmacher, Bernhard and Klapperich, Holger and Mertle, Fabian and Huldtgren, Alina}, title = {Overcoming technology and communication barriers in intergenerational communication with a tangible interface}, series = {MuC '23: Mensch und Computer 2023, Rapperswil Switzerland, September 3 - 6, 2023}, booktitle = {MuC '23: Mensch und Computer 2023, Rapperswil Switzerland, September 3 - 6, 2023}, editor = {Stolze, Markus and Loch, Frieder and Baldauf, Matthias and Alt, Florian and Schneegrass, Christina and Kosch, Thomas and Hirzle, Teresa and Sadeghian, Shadan and Draxler, Fiona and Bektas, Kenan and Lohan, Katrin and Knierim, Pascal}, publisher = {Association for Computing Machinery}, address = {New York}, isbn = {979-8-4007-0771-1}, doi = {10.1145/3603555.3608554}, pages = {508 -- 512}, year = {2023}, abstract = {Despite the higher uptake of digital media also in older age groups, there are still challenges for people of high ages and with cognitive or motoric problems, which prevent them from learning and using devices like smartphones or tablets. Tangible user interfaces provide an opportunity to connect these people to social media, thereby increasing their digital participation in society and reducing loneliness. In this paper, we discuss the challenges of intergenerational communication and research the opportunities affiliated with tangible technologies to overcome technology barriers for adults of high ages. We present a hybrid system for social media interactions between young smartphone users and their old relatives, who do not use mobile technologies. The system consists of a tangible user interface designed specifically for old adults that connects to a standard mobile messenger service. TAMI was designed in a user-centered process to fulfill the needs of older adults and tested in a longer-term field study with pairs of young and old relatives.}, language = {en} } @article{WittpahlZakourLehmannetal.2018, author = {Wittpahl, Christian and Zakour, Hatem Ben and Lehmann, Matthias and Braun, Alexander}, title = {Realistic Image Degradation with Measured PSF}, series = {Electronic Imaging, Autonomous Vehicles and Machines 2018}, journal = {Electronic Imaging, Autonomous Vehicles and Machines 2018}, number = {17}, publisher = {Society for Imaging Science and Technology}, issn = {2470-1173}, doi = {10.2352/ISSN.2470-1173.2018.17.AVM-149}, pages = {149}, year = {2018}, language = {en} } @article{WinklerBeckerDoolanetal.2012, author = {Winkler, Michael and Becker, Klaus and Doolan, Con and Kameier, Frank and Paschereit, Christian Oliver}, title = {Aeroacoustic Effects of a Cylinder-Plate Configuration}, series = {AIAA Journal}, volume = {50}, journal = {AIAA Journal}, number = {7}, publisher = {ARC}, doi = {10.2514/1.j051578}, pages = {1614 -- 1620}, year = {2012}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{WindteRadespielNeef2005, author = {Windte, Jan and Radespiel, Rolf and Neef, Matthias}, title = {Aerodynamic Analysis of Flapping Airfoil Propulsion at Low Reynolds Numbers}, series = {MEGAFLOW - Numerical Flow Simulation for Aircraft Design}, volume = {NNFM, 89}, booktitle = {MEGAFLOW - Numerical Flow Simulation for Aircraft Design}, editor = {Kroll, Norbert and Fassbender, Jens K.}, publisher = {Springer-Verlag}, address = {Berlin, Heidelberg}, isbn = {978-3-540-24383-0}, doi = {10.1007/3-540-32382-1_21}, pages = {299 -- 313}, year = {2005}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{WillinghamGerardYerichuketal.2018, author = {Willingham, Lee and Gerard, Yun and Yerichuk, Deanna and de B{\´a}nffy-Hall, Alicia}, title = {Community Music in Higher Education : Addressing Excellence (Standards) and Inclusivity (Accessibility)}, series = {Proceedings of the XV International Seminar of the ISME Commission on Community Music Activity Tbilisi State University, Tbilisi, Georgia 10th-14th}, booktitle = {Proceedings of the XV International Seminar of the ISME Commission on Community Music Activity Tbilisi State University, Tbilisi, Georgia 10th-14th}, editor = {Camlin, Dave}, address = {Tbilisi, Georgia}, pages = {262 -- 297}, year = {2018}, language = {en} } @techreport{Williams2016, author = {Williams, Erica J.}, title = {Marketing Communications in English}, publisher = {Wayzgoose Press}, address = {Eugene}, year = {2016}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{WillersCurcicBosch2017, author = {Willers, Oliver and Curcic, Michael and Bosch, Robert}, title = {Fingerprinting MEMS Gyroscopes}, series = {11th Smart Systems Integration Conference 2017 International Conference and Exhibition on Integration Issues of Miniaturized Systems Cork, Ireland 8-9 March 2017}, booktitle = {11th Smart Systems Integration Conference 2017 International Conference and Exhibition on Integration Issues of Miniaturized Systems Cork, Ireland 8-9 March 2017}, editor = {Thomas, Otto}, publisher = {Curran Associates, Inc.}, isbn = {978-1-5108-4478-0}, pages = {133}, year = {2017}, language = {en} } @article{WilleRuessRanketal.2016, author = {Wille, Hagen and Ruess, Martin and Rank, Ernst and Yosibash, Zohar}, title = {Uncertainty quantification for personalized analyses of human proximal femurs}, series = {Journal of Biomechanics}, volume = {49}, journal = {Journal of Biomechanics}, number = {4}, publisher = {Elsevier}, issn = {0021-9290}, doi = {10.1016/j.jbiomech.2015.11.013}, pages = {520 -- 527}, year = {2016}, abstract = {Computational models for the personalized analysis of human femurs contain uncertainties in bone material properties and loads, which affect the simulation results. To quantify the influence we developed a probabilistic framework based on polynomial chaos (PC) that propagates stochastic input variables through any computational model. We considered a stochastic E-ρ relationship and a stochastic hip contact force, representing realistic variability of experimental data. Their influence on the prediction of principal strains (ϵ1 and ϵ3) was quantified for one human proximal femur, including sensitivity and reliability analysis. Large variabilities in the principal strain predictions were found in the cortical shell of the femoral neck, with coefficients of variation of ≈40\%. Between 60 and 80\% of the variance in ϵ1 and ϵ3 are attributable to the uncertainty in the E-ρ relationship, while ≈10\% are caused by the load magnitude and 5-30\% by the load direction. Principal strain directions were unaffected by material and loading uncertainties. The antero-superior and medial inferior sides of the neck exhibited the largest probabilities for tensile and compression failure, however all were very small (pf<0.001). In summary, uncertainty quantification with PC has been demonstrated to efficiently and accurately describe the influence of very different stochastic inputs, which increases the credibility and explanatory power of personalized analyses of human proximal femurs.}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{WilczekSteffensWeinzierl2019, author = {Wilczek, Tobias and Steffens, Jochen and Weinzierl, innovations, such as personalized medicine, self diagnostic tools for everyday use, or hybrid healthcare models. However, the development of these technologies often overlooks the perspectives of patients and their families and socio-cultural surroundings, posing significant social, technological, and ethical challenges related to data bias, empowerment or surveillance, respectively. Bringing together interdisciplinary, interprofessional, and intersectoral collaboration in a systematic way seems to be a crucial element for adressing these issues and ensuring the meaningful integration of sensitive data and AI technologies into patient-centred healthcare arrangements. In this workshop, researchers and practitioners from diverse related disciplines, including HCI, AI, social and cultural sciences, healthcare, gerontology, etc., are invited to share their case studies on innovative health technologies and medical AI. Drawing from contextual best practices, as well as challenges and failures, the workshop organizers aim to collectively devise a systematic approach for co-designing and implementing telemedical innovations in real-world healthcare settings.}, subject = {K{\"u}nstliche Intelligenz}, language = {en} }
