In view of the challenges democracy is currently facing, at both European and national level, such as growing polarisation, increasing threats to human security and expanding digitalisation, it is important to defend and consolidate it, as a sine-qua-non element of "the European way of life". Education for responsible democratic citizenship (RDC) or education for democracy (EfD) for short is a way of doing so. EfD strategies and tools to strengthen the democratic agency/capacity for action of citizens, the youth in particular, through transformative learning, has been the focus of the DEMOCRAT project (March 2023 to February 2026). This Policy Brief was initially drafted after the seven first months of the DEMOCRAT project but is now being finalised with the experience of two-and-a-half years of project implementation in mind. Key findings and proposed policy actions presented here include: · To safeguard democracy within the European Union, transformative education for democracy must be reinforced, also taking into account fast-moving digitalisation and fast-breached planetary boundaries. · The shift to transformative education for democracy should be based on a coherent competence framework defined in complementarity with the frameworks of citizenship competences proposed by the EU (Key Competences for Lifelong Learning) and the Council of Europe (Competences for Democratic Culture). The four key RDC competences identified by DEMOCRAT are: Solidary Participation, Deliberation, Judgement, and Democratic Resilience. · The above competence framework should be translated by EU member states and schools in different parts of Europe into a sample curriculum for responsible democratic citizenship adjusted to their education systems and societies. · Schools have to be laboratories of democratic practice on a daily basis and across subjects, not just for a few hours of civic education or education for democracy per week, and need to connect with a conducive local, regional, national, European, global and digital environment. · Students need to be aware of both their rights and responsibilities, and be guided to act on both, within their peer groups and in relation to their teachers, parents, local authorities and other relevant stakeholders. A crucial aspect of any approach to education for democracy is the competence of the teacher to create an environment in which the students can learn democracy in action and not just in words}, subject = {Demokratische Bildung}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{YerichukdeBanffyHallCoffmanetal.2016, author = {Yerichuk, Deanna and de B{\´a}nffy-Hall, Alicia and Coffman, Don and Cooper, N. and Deane, K. and Johnston, T. and Kleber, M. and Shiobara, M. and Willingham, L. and Veblen, K.}, title = {Policy Directions for Community Music: Looking Back, Looking Forward}, series = {Innovation and Change in Community Music Proceedings of the XV International Seminar of the ISME Commission on Community Music Activity Edinburgh College, Edinburgh, Scotland 19-23 July 2016}, booktitle = {Innovation and Change in Community Music Proceedings of the XV International Seminar of the ISME Commission on Community Music Activity Edinburgh College, Edinburgh, Scotland 19-23 July 2016}, editor = {Cohen, Mary L.}, publisher = {International Society for Music Education}, isbn = {978-0-6481219-1-6}, pages = {132 -- 151}, year = {2016}, language = {en} } @misc{Radtke2021, type = {Master Thesis}, author = {Radtke, Linn}, title = {Power and Intersectionality Matters! On that account, policy and research are focused almost exclusively on women - often on the reconciliation of work and childbearing - and social policy at the state level. In our study, we concentrate on men who reconcile gainful employment with elderly care, and we include the company level - a level of analysis often neglected in traditional theoretical approaches and typologies of comparative welfare state research. In Germany, during the last decade, the share of sons who are responsible for taking care of their elderly relatives has remarkably increased. In our qualitative research, we carried out comparative case studies in eleven German companies. We conducted around 60 interviews with male employees caring for an elderly relative, as well as with members of the works councils and human resources departments in different kinds of companies. We analysed which familial, social, professional, legal as well as occupational resources are central for these men, how they cope with reconciling work and care, and which gaps in the welfare system they identify. Interestingly, the overwhelming majority of the caring sons claim not to have problems in reconciling work and care, although they spend significant time on caring. In this paper we try to explain this pattern by looking at their typical care arrangements. We found that while women tend to organise employment around care, men rather seem to organise care around their employment. Given the feminist critique of the "adult worker model" this is an interesting result and needs theoretical reflection. Do men have the solution to the care-blindness of the "adult worker model" without falling into the "cold modern model of care"? Which resources are mainly used in "adult worker care arrangements"? Recently, the personality inventory for ICD-11 (PiCD) has emerged as one of the most widely used measures of these ICD-11 personality trait domains. Methods The current study contributed to the validation of the PiCD validation by exploring its stability and predictive links with psychological distress over 6 months in a sample of 206 German community adults. Results The PiCD trait domain scales displayed strong differential (all r ≥ .80) and absolute stability (all |d| ≤ .09). Additionally, PiCD negative affectivity predicted depression, anxiety, and stress, and PiCD detachment predicted depression over 6 months beyond baseline. Conclusion In sum, this study demonstrated the stability of the PiCD trait domain scores, supporting their utility for capturing relatively stable traits as described in the ICD-11. Emotion regulation is important for success and wellbeing in further life. It is developed in interaction with parents as attachment figures. Teachers can also be important persons for the child in the context of bonding. This leads to the question of how early childhood teachers can support children learning to regulate their emotions. We analyze with the content analysis, four programs for promoting social and emotional skills that are currently used in Germany. The main question is if the programs include elements that increase teachers' skills in supporting the children in regulating their emotions. The categories to analyze the programs are derived from theories of teacher-child interaction. In addition to programs for promoting emotional and social development, we will discuss aspects of shaping interaction as essential elements in promoting emotion regulation. The research shows that the context-specific development of a framework for community music in Germany, within the community music spirit of participation reflected in the action research methodology, gives voice to and connects community musicians, and has contributed considerably to the development of community music theory and practice, not only in Munich, but across Germany.}, language = {en} } @article{UnterfraunerVoigtHofer2021, author = {Unterfrauner, Elisabeth and Voigt, Christian and Hofer, Margit}, title = {The effect of maker and entrepreneurial education on self-efficacy and creativity}, series = {Entrepreneurship Education}, volume = {4}, journal = {Entrepreneurship Education}, number = {4}, publisher = {Springer Nature}, issn = {2520-8152}, doi = {10.1007/s41959-021-00060-w}, pages = {403 -- 424}, year = {2021}, language = {en} } @article{SchneiderYoonMokrosetal.2022, author = {Schneider, Sabrina and Yoon, Dahlnym and Mokros, Andreas and Schwarz, Maximilian Fritz and Baster, Angelina and K{\"o}hler, Denis}, title = {The Elemental Psychopathy Assessment (EPA): Factor structure and construct validity across three German samples}, series = {Psychological Assessment}, volume = {34}, journal = {Psychological Assessment}, number = {8}, publisher = {American Psychological Association}, issn = {1939-134X}, doi = {10.1037/pas0001126}, pages = {717 -- 730}, year = {2022}, subject = {Psychopathie}, language = {en} } @article{Virchow2004, author = {Virchow, Fabian}, title = {The groupuscularization of neo-Nazism in Germany: the case of the Aktionsb{\"u}ro Norddeutschland}, series = {Patterns of Prejudice}, volume = {38}, journal = {Patterns of Prejudice}, number = {1}, publisher = {Taylor \& Francis}, organization = {Taylor \& Francis}, issn = {0031-322X}, doi = {10.1080/0031322032000185587}, pages = {56 -- 70}, year = {2004}, language = {en} } @incollection{UnterfraunerVoigtSchrammeletal.2018, author = {Unterfrauner, Elisabeth and Voigt, Christian and Schrammel, Maria and Menichinelli, Massimo}, title = {The Maker Movement and the Disruption of the Producer-Consumer Relation}, series = {Internet Science}, volume = {Lecture Notes in Computer Science: 10750}, booktitle = {Internet Science}, editor = {Diplaris, Sotiris and Satsiou, Anna and F{\o}lstad, Asbj{\o}rn and Vafopoulos, Michail and Vilarinho, Thomas}, publisher = {Springer International Publishing}, address = {Cham}, isbn = {978-3-319-77546-3}, doi = {10.1007/978-3-319-77547-0_9}, pages = {113 -- 125}, year = {2018}, language = {en} } @article{HautmannSteinEichelbergeretal.2011, author = {Hautmann, Christopher and Stein, Petra and Eichelberger, Ilka and Hanisch, Charlotte and Pl{\"u}ck, Julia and Walter, Daniel and D{\"o}pfner, Manfred}, title = {The Severely Impaired Do Profit Most: Differential Effectiveness of a Parent Management Training for Children with Externalizing Behavior Problems in a Natural Setting}, series = {Journal of Child and Family Studies}, volume = {20}, journal = {Journal of Child and Family Studies}, number = {4}, publisher = {Springer}, doi = {10.1007/s10826-010-9409-0}, pages = {424 -- 435}, year = {2011}, language = {en} } @article{RoseSchielSchroederetal.2017, author = {Rose, Uwe and Schiel, Stefan and Schr{\"o}der, Helmut and Kleudgen, Martin and Tophoven, Silke and Rauch, Angela and Freude, Gabriele and M{\"u}ller, Grit}, title = {The study of mental health at work. design and sampling}, series = {Scandinavian journal of public health}, volume = {45}, journal = {Scandinavian journal of public health}, number = {6}, publisher = {Sage}, pages = {584 -- 594}, year = {2017}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{UnterfraunerVoigtSchoen2019, author = {Unterfrauner, Elisabeth and Voigt, Christian and Sch{\"o}n, Sandra}, title = {Towards a Model of Early Entrepreneurial Education: Appreciation, Facilitation and Evaluation}, series = {Methodologies and Intelligent Systems for Technology Enhanced Learning, 8th International Conference}, volume = {Advances in Intelligent Systems and Computing: 804}, booktitle = {Methodologies and Intelligent Systems for Technology Enhanced Learning, 8th International Conference}, editor = {Di Mascio, Tania and Vittorini, Pierpaolo and Gennari, Rosella and de La Prieta, Fernando and Rodr{\´i}guez, Sara and Temperini, Marco and Azambuja Silveira, Ricardo and Popescu, Elvira and Lancia, Loreto}, publisher = {Springer International Publishing}, address = {Cham}, isbn = {978-3-319-98871-9}, doi = {10.1007/978-3-319-98872-6_17}, pages = {139 -- 146}, year = {2019}, language = {en} } @incollection{VoigtKieslingerSchaefer2017, author = {Voigt, Christian and Kieslinger, Barbara and Sch{\"a}fer, Teresa}, title = {User Experiences Around Sentiment Analyses, Facilitating Workplace Learning}, series = {Social Computing and Social Media. In Germany, a growing number of young people with psychological disabilities in vocational rehabilitation can be observed. The study at hand focuses on this group and examines their (un-)unemployment biographies before vocational rehabilitation, their access to vocational rehabilitation and identifies their individual challenges within the process of vocational rehabilitation. Methods Using a multi-methods approach, we analyze representative administrative data of the German Federal Employment Agency as well as biographical interviews conducted with young rehabilitants. We compare the population of young rehabilitants with psychological disorders to those with other disabilities in terms of vocational rehabilitation and initial labor market entry in order to get a representative picture about their school to work transitions. Since rehabilitants with psychological disabilities tend to be older than the remaining population, analyses are stratified by age groups. In addition, qualitative in-depth interviews provide an additional and deeper understanding of specific employment barriers youth with psychological disorders have to overcome. Furthermore, the individual perspective gives insight on how the crucial transition from school to work is perceived by the population under study. Results The pathway into vocational rehabilitation of youth with psychological disorders is often characterized by obstacles in their transition from school to work. During rehabilitation, it appears essential to provide psychological stabilization along with vocational training. Although their average level of education is higher than those of other rehabilitants, labor market transition after (often company-external) vocational training challenges many young people with psychological disabilities, leaving many of them with comparatively poor labor market prospects. Conclusions Young persons with psychological disabilities, who come from regular schools or dropped out from regular school or university, seem to find their way to vocational rehabilitation more indirectly. Furthermore, vocational rehabilitation itself is often prolonged for those with psychological disabilities possibly due to a corresponding stabilization process. However, vocational rehabilitation can be a core element within the stabilization process of a psychological disease.}, language = {en} } @book{OPUS4-3228, title = {War isn't hell, it's entertainment}, editor = {Schubart, Rikke and Virchow, Fabian}, publisher = {McFarland \& Company Publ.}, address = {Jefferson, N.C.}, isbn = {978-0786435586}, year = {2009}, language = {en} } @article{MuellerKoehlerHenningetal.2025, author = {M{\"u}ller, Romina and K{\"o}hler, Denis and Henning, Julia and Josupeit, Jan and Neher, Frederic and Hagen, Susanne}, title = {Well-Being, Quality of Life, and Personality in German Heart Transplant Patients}, series = {Open Journal of Medical Psychology}, volume = {14}, journal = {Open Journal of Medical Psychology}, number = {4}, issn = {2165-9389}, doi = {10.4236/ojmp.2025.144016}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:hbz:due62-opus-57415}, pages = {286 -- 297}, year = {2025}, abstract = {Background: Heart transplantation constitutes not only a profound physiological impact but also imposes immense psychological strain, necessitating a deeper comprehension and optimal promotion of subjective well-being. Objective: Quantitative data collection of relationships between the subjective well-being of heart transplant patients and selected influencing factors was investigated. Material and Methods: In a random sample of 97 heart transplant patients, quality of life was measured with the MLDL, subjective well-being with the HSWBS, social support with the SUCE-4, social activities, personality traits with the BFI-10 and the UGTS, as well as disease management according to the EFK, and physical complaints with the ERSD-SC TM were determined using an online survey. Results: In addition to physical well-being, social life, personality traits, the type of disease (chronic or spontaneous), and functional capacity have a significant impact on subjective well-being. Conclusion: In addition to physical well-being, psychosocial monitoring should also be established in transplantation medicine, and the long-term involvement of psychotherapists, psychiatrists, and social workers should be considered. After a heart transplantation, caring for the mind is just as essential as caring for the body, as subjective well-being is a product of the reciprocal influences of physical and psychological states.}, subject = {Herztransplantation}, language = {en} } @article{TophovenDuPrelPeteretal.2015, author = {Tophoven, Silke and Du Prel, Jean-Baptist and Peter, Richard and Kretschmer, Veronika}, title = {Working in gender-dominated occupations and depressive symptoms}, series = {Journal for Labour Market Research}, volume = {48}, journal = {Journal for Labour Market Research}, number = {3}, pages = {247 -- 262}, year = {2015}, abstract = {Gender-specific differences in the frequency of depression to the disadvantage of women have been known for decades. In Germany, there is evidence that the prevalence of mental disorders also differs by occupation. The present study investigates whether for women working in male-dominated occupations and for men working in female-dominated occupations is related to depressive symptoms independently from other factors like work stress and work-family conflict. Special attention is paid to gender differences. Moreover, women are distinguished according to their working time (full-time or not). We use data from the first wave of the lidAstudy for our analyses. We make use of the applied Beck Depression Inventory, the effort-reward imbalance scales as well as the work-family conflict scale. Occupational gender segregation is defined as a share of 80 \% of men and women per occupation, respectively. For women, the results of the multivariate analyses show an independent relationship between depressive symptoms and working in male-dominated occupations. Furthermore, significant interactions between occupational gender segregation and work stress are observed in both men and women regarding depressive symptoms.}, language = {en} } @incollection{CelikKarabaş2022, author = {{\c{C}}elik, Fatma and Karaba{\c{s}}, Beyza}, title = {You don't talk about that!? - A survey on prospective social worker's knowledge on CSA and their use of media}, series = {Child Sexual Abuse and the Media}, booktitle = {Child Sexual Abuse and the Media}, editor = {Stelzmann, Daniela and Ischebeck, Josephine}, publisher = {Nomos Verlagsgesellschaft}, address = {Baden-Baden}, isbn = {978-3-7489-0440-3}, doi = {10.5771/9783748904403-123}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:hbz:due62-opus-44412}, publisher = {Hochschule D{\"u}sseldorf}, pages = {123 -- 134}, year = {2022}, abstract = {Well-trained professionals, like social workers, are essential for effective prevention of child sexual abuse (CSA). This paper highlights publics that present themselves as counterpublics but which in actual fact reinforce existing hierarchies, particularly patriarchal structures. The case study of Girl Defined Ministries, a fundamentalist evangelical influencer duo based in Texas, links the research fields of digital religion and anti-feminist defensive publics, revealing parts of anti-feminism online that have hitherto been the reserve of digital religion studies. A consideration of the national history and religious developments of recent decades in the United States allows for a deeper understanding of this type of religious influencer. Girl Defined post content about their concept of "Biblical womanhood" on multiple platforms. In the present study, 56 blog articles by Girl Defined were analysed using qualitative content analysis through the analytical lens of the Social Identity model of Deindividuation Effects (SIDE), which reflects on how group identity is formed by simultaneously enhancing in-group and devaluing out-group norms. The findings demonstrate that Girl Defined portray the out-group, feminism, as an anti-God ideology responsible for the collective misery of women in Western societies, and hold women responsible for their own discontent by choosing the wrong path. Girl Defined therefore promote their in-group values, gender roles for women defined by God, and submission to men as the only way to live a joyful life. Presenting themselves as a persecuted and ostracised counterpublic to a feminist mainstream is central to Girl Defined's argument. The paper adds to the existing literature on women anti-feminist and religious influencers as a development of mediatization.}, language = {en} }
