Ambient OH and HO2 concentrations were measured by laser induced fluorescence (LIF) during the PRIDE-PRD2006 (Program of Regional Integrated Experiments of Air Quality over the Pearl River Delta, 2006) campaign at a rural site downwind of the megacity of Guangzhou in Southern China. The observed OH concentrations reached daily peak values of (15-26) × 106 cm-3 which are among the highest values so far reported for urban and suburban areas. The observed OH shows a consistent high correlation with j(O1D) over a broad range of NOx conditions. The correlation cannot be reproduced by model simulations, indicating that OH stabilizing processes are missing in current models. The observed OH exhibited a weak dependence on NOx in contrast to model predictions. While modelled and measured OH agree well at NO mixing ratios above 1 ppb, a continuously increasing underprediction of the observed OH is found towards lower NO concentrations, reaching a factor of 8 at 0.02 ppb NO. A dependence of the modelled-to-measured OH ratio on isoprene cannot be concluded from the PRD data. However, the magnitude of the ratio fits into the isoprene dependent trend that was reported from other campaigns in forested regions. Hofzumahaus et al. (2009) proposed an unknown OH recycling process without NO, in order to explain the high OH levels at PRD in the presence of high VOC reactivity and low NO. Taking a recently discovered interference in the LIF measurement of HO2 into account, the need for an additional HO2 → OH recycling process persists, but the required source strength may be up to 20\% larger than previously determined. Recently postulated isoprene mechanisms by Lelieveld et al. (2008) and Peeters and M{\"u}ller (2010) lead to significant enhancements of OH expected for PRD, but an underprediction of the observed OH by a factor of two remains at low NO (0.1-0.2 ppb). If the photolysis of hydroperoxy aldehydes from isoprene is as efficient as proposed by Peeters and M{\"u}ller (2010), the corresponding OH formation at PRD would be more important than the primary OH production from ozone and HONO. While the new isoprene mechanisms need to be confirmed by laboratory experiments, there is probably need for other, so far unidentified chemical processes to explain entirely the high OH levels observed in Southern China.}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{WeberHewelingFischeretal.2017, author = {Weber, Konradin and Heweling, Georg and Fischer, Christian and Lange, Martin and B{\"o}hlke, Christoph}, title = {Octocopter investigation of the vertical and horizontal variation of ultrafine particles, fine particulate matter and soot in the traffic plume emitted from a Rhine river bridge in Duesseldorf, Germany}, series = {Geophysical Research Abstracts: EGU General Assembly 2017}, volume = {19}, booktitle = {Geophysical Research Abstracts: EGU General Assembly 2017}, publisher = {Copernicus}, address = {G{\"o}ttingen}, year = {2017}, abstract = {For this study an octocopter UAV was used for carrying an ultrafine (UFP) particle monitor, an optical particle counter (OPC) and a micro aethalometer. Hydroxyl radicals (OH) are the most important reagent for the oxidation of trace gases in the atmosphere. OH concentrations measured during recent field campaigns in isoprene-rich environments were unexpectedly large. A number of studies showed that unimolecular reactions of organic peroxy radicals (RO2) formed in the initial reaction step of isoprene with OH play an important role for the OH budget in the atmosphere at low mixing ratios of nitrogen monoxide (NO) of less than 100 pptv. It has also been suggested that similar reactions potentially play an important role for RO2 from other compounds. Here, we investigate the oxidation of methacrolein (MACR), one major oxidation product of isoprene, by OH in experiments in the simulation chamber SAPHIR under controlled atmospheric conditions. The experiments show that measured OH concentrations are approximately 50\% larger than calculated by the Master Chemical Mechanism (MCM) for conditions of the experiments (NO mixing ratio of 90 pptv). The analysis of the OH budget reveals an OH source that is not accounted for in MCM, which is correlated with the production rate of RO2 radicals from MACR. In order to balance the measured OH destruction rate, 0.77 OH radicals (1σ error: ± 0.31) need to be additionally reformed from each reaction of OH with MACR. The strong correlation of the missing OH source with the production of RO2 radicals is consistent with the concept of OH formation from unimolecular isomerization and decomposition reactions of RO2. The comparison of observations with model calculations gives a lower limit of 0.03 s-1 for the reaction rate constant if the OH source is attributed to an isomerization reaction of MACR-1-OH-2-OO and MACR-2-OH-2-OO formed in the MACR + OH reaction as suggested in the literature (Crounse et al., 2012). This fast isomerization reaction would be a competitor to the reaction of this RO2 species with a minimum of 150 pptv NO. The isomerization reaction would be the dominant reaction pathway for this specific RO2 radical in forested regions, where NO mixing ratios are typically much smaller.}, language = {en} } @article{AckermannFiedlerBrinkmannetal.2020, author = {Ackermann, David and Fiedler, Felicitas and Brinkmann, Fabian and Schneider, Martin and Weinzierl, Stefan}, title = {On the Acoustic Qualities of Dynamic Pseudo-Binaural Recordings}, series = {Journal of the Audio Engineering Society}, volume = {68}, journal = {Journal of the Audio Engineering Society}, number = {6}, publisher = {Audio-Engineering Society}, issn = {0004-7554}, doi = {10.17743/jaes.2020.0036}, pages = {418 -- 427}, year = {2020}, abstract = {The motion-tracked binaural (MTB) technique allows the dynamic, pseudobinaural rendering of spatial sound scenes recorded by a circular array of microphones on a rigid sphere. The system provides a multichannel live audio transmission from which a head-related signal with approximated interaural time and level differences can be derived and played via headphones, head tracking, and a corresponding rendering software. The latter is mainly calculating imperceptible interpolation between channel pairs during head movements. This contribution evaluates the potential of this format for the creation of virtual acoustic envi- ronments. Based on the technical realization of a 16-channel MTB array with omnidirectional diffuse field-corrected electret condenser microphone capsules, the plausibility of 8 and 16-channel recordings was tested against a physical sound source. The expansion of decentralized energy resources and the integration of new consumers due to sector coupling (e.g. heat pumps or electric vehicles) into low voltage grids increases the need for grid expansion and usage of flexibilities in the grid. A high observability of the current grid status is needed to perform these tasks efficiently and effectively. Therefore, there is a need to increase the observability of low voltage grids by installing measurement technologies (e.g. smart meters). Multiple different measurement technologies are available for low voltage grids which can vary in their benefit to observation quality and their installation costs. This conclusion of Huellermeier et al. underpins the importance of calibrated uncertainties. Since AI-based algorithms are heavily impacted by dataset shifts, the automotive industry needs to safeguard its system against all possible contingencies. One important but often neglected dataset shift is caused by optical aberrations induced by the windshield. For the verification of the perception system performance, requirements on the AI performance need to be translated into optical metrics by a bijective mapping (Braun, 2023). Given this bijective mapping it is evident that the optical system characteristics add additional information about the magnitude of the dataset shift. As a consequence, we propose to incorporate a physical inductive bias into the neural network calibration architecture to enhance the robustness and the trustworthiness of the AI target application, which we demonstrate by using a semantic segmentation task as an example. By utilizing the Zernike coefficient vector of the optical system as a physical prior we can significantly reduce the mean expected calibration error in case of optical aberrations. As a result, we pave the way for a trustworthy uncertainty representation and for a holistic verification strategy of the perception chain.}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{MuellerLehmannBraun2019, author = {M{\"u}ller, Patrick and Lehmann, Matthias and Braun, Alexander}, title = {Optical quality metrics for image restoration}, series = {Digital Optical Technologies 2019}, volume = {Proceedings, Vol. 11062}, booktitle = {Digital Optical Technologies 2019}, editor = {Kress, Bernard C. and Schelkens, Peter}, address = {Munich}, organization = {International Society for Optics and Photonics}, doi = {10.1117/12.2528100}, pages = {1106214}, year = {2019}, abstract = {Image restoration is a process used to remove blur (from different sources like object motion or aberrations) from images by either non-blind or blind-deconvolution. The metrics commonly used to quantify the restoration process are peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and structural similarity index measure (SSIM). Often only a small sample of test images are used (like Lena or the camera guy). In optical design research PSNR and SSIM are not normally used, here image quality metrics based on linear system theory (e.g. modulation transfer function, MTF) are used to quantify optical errors like spherical or chromatic aberration. In this article we investigate how different image restoration algorithms can be quantified by applying image quality metrics. We start with synthetic image data that is used in camera test stands (e.g. Siemens star etc.), apply two different spatially variant degradation algorithms, and restore the original image by a direct method (Wiener filtering within sub-images), and by an iterative method (alternating direction method of multipliers, ADMM). Afterwards we compare the quality metrics (like MTF curves) for the original, the degraded and the restored image. As a first result we show that restoration algorithms sometimes fail in dealing with non-natural scenes, e.g. slanted-edge targets. Further, these first results indicate a correlation between degradation and restoration, i.e. the restoration algorithms are not capable of removing the optically relevant errors introduced by the degradation, a fact neither visible nor available from the PSNR values. We discuss the relevance in the context of the automotive industry, where image restoration may yield distinct advantages for camera-based applications, but testing methods rely on the used image quality metrics.}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{GroteKastsianMoennigmann2011, author = {Grote, Wolfgang and Kastsian, Darya and M{\"o}nnigmann, Martin}, title = {Optimal power system unit commitment with guaranteed local stability}, series = {Proceedings of the 2011 American Control Conference}, booktitle = {Proceedings of the 2011 American Control Conference}, publisher = {IEEE}, issn = {2378-5861}, doi = {10.1109/ACC.2011.5991058}, pages = {4526 -- 4531}, year = {2011}, abstract = {This article deals with the cost optimal commitment of power systems. The aim of the survey is not to estimate arm's length profit allocations but rather to elicit fairness considerations in different transfer pricing related scenarios. In a digital economy framework where arm's length profits are distributed extremely inequitably, subjects perceive this distribution of profits as most unfair compared to more balanced scenarios. Consequently, subjects propose a "fair" distribution of profits that substantially differs from the exogenously given arm's length allocation. In scenarios with a more balanced arm's length allocation of profits, we find that the perceived fairness for the expert groups increases while a control group of business students is almost not influenced by the arm's length allocation of profits.}, language = {en} } @article{MartensHerder1999, author = {Martens, William L. and Herder, Jens}, title = {Perceptual criteria for eliminating reflectors and occluders for efficient rendering of environmental sound}, series = {The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America}, volume = {105}, journal = {The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America}, number = {2}, doi = {10.1121/1.425349}, pages = {979}, year = {1999}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{MartensHerder1999, author = {Martens, William L. and Herder, Jens}, title = {Perceptual criteria for eliminating reflectors and occluders from the rendering of environmental sound}, series = {137th Regular Meeting of the Acoustical Society of America and the 2nd Convention of the European Acoustics Association}, booktitle = {137th Regular Meeting of the Acoustical Society of America and the 2nd Convention of the European Acoustics Association}, publisher = {Acoustical Society of America, European Acoustics Association}, address = {Berlin}, year = {1999}, abstract = {Given limited computational resources available for the rendering of spatial sound imagery, we seek to determine effective means for choosing whatcomponents of the rendering will provide the most audible differences in the results. [Scognamiglio 2008] The Energy Performance of Building Directive (EPBD) [EU 2010] establishes that starting from 31st December 2020 all new buildings have to be Nearly Zero Energy. The main architectural implication for this condition is that if up until now the domain of design was the building itself, now it is the building and possibly other spaces, that have to be conceived for placing the energy generation devices. Photovoltaics (PV) is particularly suited for reaching the (Nearly) Net ZEB status, due to its technical features, the existing knowledge on how to use PV in buildings, and since it is the easiest and most reliable way to get the (Nearly) Net Zero Energy objectives. [Torcellini 2006] A relevant international effort on the subject of the Net Zero Energy Buildings (Net ZEBs) - Net ZEB meaning that the buildings are connected to an energy infrastructure - is ongoing in the International Energy Agency (IEA), joint Solar Heating and Cooling (SHC) Task 40 and Energy Conservation in Buildings and Community Systems (ECBCS) Annex 52, titled "Towards Net Zero Energy Solar Buildings" [IEA 2008a]. The authors of this paper, all participating in the IEA research group, investigate how the use of PV for Net ZEBs can influence the building's design, taking into account different building typologies (e. g. new ones vs. existing ones, listed buildings, etc.). Similarities and differences between PV and Solar Thermal (ST) are discussed, too. In view of the challenges democracy is currently facing, at both European and national level, such as growing polarisation, increasing threats to human security and expanding digitalisation, it is important to defend and consolidate it, as a sine-qua-non element of "the European way of life". Education for responsible democratic citizenship (RDC) or education for democracy (EfD) for short is a way of doing so. EfD strategies and tools to strengthen the democratic agency/capacity for action of citizens, the youth in particular, through transformative learning, has been the focus of the DEMOCRAT project (March 2023 to February 2026). This Policy Brief was initially drafted after the seven first months of the DEMOCRAT project but is now being finalised with the experience of two-and-a-half years of project implementation in mind. Key findings and proposed policy actions presented here include: · To safeguard democracy within the European Union, transformative education for democracy must be reinforced, also taking into account fast-moving digitalisation and fast-breached planetary boundaries. · The shift to transformative education for democracy should be based on a coherent competence framework defined in complementarity with the frameworks of citizenship competences proposed by the EU (Key Competences for Lifelong Learning) and the Council of Europe (Competences for Democratic Culture). The four key RDC competences identified by DEMOCRAT are: Solidary Participation, Deliberation, Judgement, and Democratic Resilience. · The above competence framework should be translated by EU member states and schools in different parts of Europe into a sample curriculum for responsible democratic citizenship adjusted to their education systems and societies. · Schools have to be laboratories of democratic practice on a daily basis and across subjects, not just for a few hours of civic education or education for democracy per week, and need to connect with a conducive local, regional, national, European, global and digital environment. · Students need to be aware of both their rights and responsibilities, and be guided to act on both, within their peer groups and in relation to their teachers, parents, local authorities and other relevant stakeholders. A crucial aspect of any approach to education for democracy is the competence of the teacher to create an environment in which the students can learn democracy in action and not just in words}, subject = {Demokratische Bildung}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{YerichukdeBanffyHallCoffmanetal.2016, author = {Yerichuk, Deanna and de B{\´a}nffy-Hall, Alicia and Coffman, Don and Cooper, N. and Deane, K. and Johnston, T. and Kleber, M. and Shiobara, M. and Willingham, L. and Veblen, K.}, title = {Policy Directions for Community Music: Looking Back, Looking Forward}, series = {Innovation and Change in Community Music Proceedings of the XV International Seminar of the ISME Commission on Community Music Activity Edinburgh College, Edinburgh, Scotland 19-23 July 2016}, booktitle = {Innovation and Change in Community Music Proceedings of the XV International Seminar of the ISME Commission on Community Music Activity Edinburgh College, Edinburgh, Scotland 19-23 July 2016}, editor = {Cohen, Mary L.}, publisher = {International Society for Music Education}, isbn = {978-0-6481219-1-6}, pages = {132 -- 151}, year = {2016}, language = {en} } @article{LepaSteffensHerzogetal.2020, author = {Lepa, Steffen and Steffens, Jochen and Herzog, Martin and Egermann, Hauke}, title = {Popular Music as Entertainment Communication: How Perceived Semantic Expression Explains Liking of Previously Unknown Music}, series = {Media and Communication}, volume = {8}, journal = {Media and Communication}, number = {3}, publisher = {Cogitatio}, doi = {10.17645/mac.v8i3.3153}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:hbz:due62-opus-23602}, pages = {191 -- 204}, year = {2020}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{SchrammKrugerNiemannetal.2019, author = {Schramm, Alexander and Kruger, Karl and Niemann, J{\"o}rg and Grote, Wolfgang}, title = {Possibilities, Limitations and Considerations for Eye Tracking in Industrial Environments: Experience from a Case Study}, series = {International Conference on Competitive Manufacturing (COMA 19) proceedings : 30 January 2019-1 February 2019, Stellenbosch, South Africa}, booktitle = {International Conference on Competitive Manufacturing (COMA 19) proceedings : 30 January 2019-1 February 2019, Stellenbosch, South Africa}, editor = {Dimitrov, Dimiter and Hagedorn-Hansen, Devon and Leipzig, Karl von}, publisher = {Department of Industrial Engineering, Stellenbosch University}, address = {Stellenbosch}, isbn = {978-0-7972-1779-9}, pages = {390 -- 396}, year = {2019}, abstract = {Eye tracking is a measurement technique for determining the orientation and viewing direction of an individual's eyes. A novel coupling of HVAC-systems (heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems) with DAC-technology (direct air capturing technology) is proposed to separate CO2 in the exhaust air of buildings and recirculate the CO2-depleted air back into the building. In a mainly theoretical approach, the corresponding potentials and limitations of the novel HVAC/DAC-coupling in recirculation mode are evaluated. For that purpose, CO2-loads in the feed and exhaust air of four buildings located in Germany were measured using calibrated non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) sensors with pyroelectric detection principle. Subsequent numerical model simulations resort to typical meteorological data as well as building operation parameters grouped in different scenarios. The measurement and simulation results were assessed with regard to: (i) the unique possibilities of a HVAC/DAC-coupling in recirculation mode for the improvement of indoor air quality, (ii) the energy saving potentials through reduced air conditioning requirements enabled by a HVAC/DAC-coupling in recirculation mode, and (iii) the potential allocation of CO2 separated from building exhaust air for energetic and/or material reutilization in decentralized systems. In conclusion, a HVAC/DAC-coupling in recirculation mode can not only reduce the energy demand of buildings but also facilitates access to unutilized CO2-resources transported in the built environment and additionally offers the potential to improve indoor air quality.
