TY - CHAP A1 - Hössl, Timo ED - Stolle, Reinhard T1 - Lean Management in Practice: A Case Study on Process Optimization and Digitization in Yard Management T2 - Applied Research Conference 2025 N2 - This paper presents a case study on the application of lean management in yard logistics at a regional construction company. Using the design science research method, key inefficiencies were identified through process mapping and performance analysis. Lean tools such as 5S, Kanban, and Visual Management were proposed to optimize material handling and improve transparency. While the focus lies on supporting logistics processes, the approach is closely related to lean construction management and can optimally— and in some cases necessarily—support lean execution on construction projects. The study demonstrates the relevance of lean management for small and medium-sized enterprises in construction logistics and highlights the importance of stakeholder involvement and process visualization. The project is carried out by Regio Augsburg Wirtschaft GmbH in cooperation with Technical University of Applied Sciences Augsburg and is funded by the Bavarian State Ministry of Finance and Home Affairs. The aim of the project is to assess the current status of sustainable development, to identify challenges and opportunities and to derive concrete recommendations for action and support services for the region. At the same time, it will strengthen the A³ region as a sustainable business location and make future development measurable. The online survey with 57 questions, which is based on international standards such as the DNK, GRI, SDGs, ESRS and ISO 26000, is conducted on an annual basis. The results are used to develop specific recommendations for action for the individual organizations, a comparison over time and comparisons between other characteristics such as the sector. The recommendations for action relate to the promotion of sustainability in the A3 region. This paper utilizes a PESTEL analysis and a Vester Sensitivity Model to examine the sector's primary challenges. The analysis, which is based on 32 influencing factors, identifies textile recycling and infrastructure as critical levers for sustainable transformation. The findings provide a systemic perspective on interdependencies and support strategic decision-making in the context of the NuCollect research project.
