This discussion paper aims at presenting examples of digitally-supported teaching formats concerning biodiversity- and ecosystem-related content at Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development (HNEE). Thus, the paper encourages reflections about these teaching formats, but also the associated challenges and limitations. Introductory aspects about the role of digital teaching in education for sustainable development are followed by a brief recapitulation of important trends regarding digitalization in biodiversity- and ecosystem-related teaching at HNEE prior to the Corona crisis. Selected examples are used to illustrate a Corona-induced burst of digitalization. A following chapter focuses on the further-development of digital teaching formats as catalyzed by the Corona crisis, as well as reflections about the implementation of these formats in the everyday teaching routines at HNEE. These include gamification elements on digital devices in the field, the use of web apps with georeferenced databases, various digital camera systems particularly in bee education, and newly developed digital-interactive educational trails. The latter focus on the indicator group of birds; not only because birds are highly relevant to nature conservation and land use and are extremely well-studied, but also because birds appear ideal from a didactic point of view. The publication also deals with the use of species identification apps and attempts a critical reflection in respect thereof. In the following, the opportunities and risks related with digital formats in ecological, nature conservation and biodiversity-related teaching at HNEE are reflected on. The paper concludes that looking at a monitor might block or hinder a person`s ability to view and appreciate nature, but it might also expand and enrich this view. The latter is the case when digital information accompanies and deepens a person`s own experiences of nature. This can be achieved when digital formats are understood for what they are: powerful tools, but never a replacement for peoples` "hands on" nature.
This publication explores how system innovations with municipalities as partners can contribute to sustainability transformation. The findings are based on a qualitative case study conducted from November 2021 to November 2023. Overall, three questions were pursued: Firstly, how could the system innovation in Eberswalde develop through existing partnerships? Secondly, which everyday practices of municipalities influenced the innovation development process? And thirdly, which characteristics and attributes of the organizations and individuals involved were important for the development of the system innovation? The here presented development of the system innovation is a joint effort. All partners made relevant contributions. As the innovation affects provision of public services, the municipalities, which are responsible for those in Germany, played a special role: they used their influence and applied their leeway, particularly in decisive regulatory procedures, to contribute to the development of the innovation. This was possible, among other things, because the innovation was linked to key strategy papers in the examined municipalities. The results show different everyday practices of municipalities are linked to the development of system innovation, such as (1) development of strategies, (2) alignment of mandatory tasks with strategies, (3) formal and informal communication, (4) management of expert committees, (5) decision-making, (6) involvement of various stakeholders and (7) leadership of employees. The innovation development process benefited from a wide variety of characteristics and attributes of the participants. The decisive factor was not that one individual or organization should hold as many as possible, but that they should be available and accessible as widely as possible within the cooperation network.
In order to meet the global challenge of shaping sustainable development, the com-petencies of education for sustainable development (ESD) are needed as key skills for all relevant professions. This approach is expressed in the UNESCO program “ESD-2030” (National Action Plan On Education For Sustainable Development (NAP) 2017), which is the roadmap for integrating ESD in the education sector. The inte-gration of ESD in the framework documents relevant to higher education is support-ed by the working group “Sustainability at Brandenburg Universities”. This guide on the curricular integration of higher education for sustainable development (HESD) is a contribution to capacity building at Brandenburg's universities.
This thesis examines the transfer and application of community-supported economy (CSX) in the specific field of gastronomy. The aim of the research is to develop an application-oriented CSX model as a prototype of transformative economics for this supply field.
First, the introduction elaborates the arguments in favour of conceptualising and further developing of alternative entrepreneurial practice from the perspective of transformative economics. The theoretical discussion then locates the work first in the context of an expanded concept of economics and then introduces three alternative economic concepts that are important for the study. Finally, existing CSX models are discussed, and a synthesis is developed from them as a working basis for the research.
Between the theoretical discussion and the empirical study lies an intermediate step with the transfer. This is where the concrete transfer of the CSX model to gastronomy takes place. In combination with desk research on existing examples of alternative economic practice in gastronomy, the first possible contents of the model of community-supported gastronomy as well as open questions arise.
These open questions form the basis for the following empirical study. In the sense of a "multi-method design", it combines guided expert interviews with a transdisciplinary workshop. The collected data was analysed by means of content structuring qualitative content analysis.
The central result of the research is a model of community-supported gastronomy that defines 18 characteristics in three thematic categories which enterprises can use to realise a community-based form of economic activity in the sense of the CSX model. In addition, the research is able to make statements about the types and areas of gastronomy in which community-based economy is rather easy or rather difficult to realise. By means of various questions on the foundation of a community-supported gastronomy, the results of the research provide potential users with orientation in the foundation process. The application-oriented research is summarised in its central product, the community-supported gastronomy model, in the form of a self-standing manual.
There is a need for further research on individual features of the community-supported gastronomy model as well as the sustainability impact of community-supported gastronomy.
The largest impact of land-use change on catchment hydrology can be linked to deforestation. This change, driven by exponential population growth, intensified food and industrial production, has resulted in alterations in river flow regimes such as high peaks, reduced base flows, and silt deposition. To reverse this trend more extensive management practices are becoming increasingly important, but can also lead to severe losses in agricultural production. Land-use optimization tools can help catchment managers to explore numerous land-use configurations for the evaluation of trade-offs amongst various uses. In this study, the Soil and water assessment tool (SWAT) model was coupled with a genetic algorithm to identify land-use/management configurations with minimal trade-offs between environmental objectives (reduced sediment load, increased stream low flow) and the crop yields of maize and soybean in Nyangores catchment (Kenya). During the land-use optimization, areas under conventional agriculture could either remain as they are or change to agroforestry or conservation agriculture (CA), where the latter was represented by introducing contour farming and vegetative filter strips. From the sets of the resulting Pareto-optimal solutions we selected mid-range solutions, representing a fair compromise among all objectives, for further analysis. We found that a combined measure implementation strategy (agroforestry on certain sites and conservation agriculture on other sites within the catchment) proved to be superior over single measure implementation strategies. On the catchment scale, a 3.6% change to forests combined with a 35% change to CA resulted in highly reduced sediment loads (−78%), increased low flow (+14%) and only slightly decreased crop yields (<4%). There was a tendency of the genetic algorithm to implement more extensive management practices in the upper part of the catchment while leaving conventional agriculture in the lower part. Our study shows that a spatially targeted implementation strategy for different conservation management practices can remarkably improve environmental sustainability with only marginal trade-offs in crop production at the catchment-level. Incentive policies such as payments for ecosystem services (PES), considering upstream and downstream stakeholders, could offer a practical way to effect these changes.
The objective of this study was to analyse and better understand the so far insufficiently researched career paths and the associated challenges and needs of women working in the German tourism industry. As a result, a greater awareness and understanding of the issue of gender equality in the German tourism industry should be achieved, thus contributing to a more equal career development for women.
As a research design, a mixed methods approach was adopted. It follows a sequential structure in which the main focus is on qualitative research based on focus group discussions. The quantitative pre-study preceding the focus groups was conducted in the form of a standardized online questionnaire using QuestionPro software, where a total of 156 women took part in. For the focus group discussions, a guideline was developed that served as the basis for the five discussions with a total of 28 participants. The evaluation was carried out in the form of a content-structuring qualitative content analysis using the computer-aided software MAXQDA. To provide a theoretical basis for both the pre-study and the focus group discussions, various theories on the emergence of gender inequality and the ERG theory, which deals with needs in the working environment, were taken into account.
The results show that the career as a whole is very important to the women surveyed. The women's understanding of their careers in relation to the tourism industry goes hand in hand with a career development that is characterized by sideways movements, a high degree of flexibility and a wide variety of work experiences in different industry segments and positions. This indicates that it will
be important in the future to realize alternatives to the hierarchical career ladder and to strive for a redefinition of the traditional career concept in the debate within companies and society. Furthermore, various challenges were identified at different hierarchical levels that women are confronted with in the work environment in tourism. In addition to the confrontation with established
male networks, the lack of visible female role models, prejudices based on gender-specific stereotypes and the incompatibility of family and career were identified as obstacles to women's career development. A lack of self-confidence and entrenched corporate and social structures can represent additional barriers. These findings underline the need to address the specific challenges faced
by women in the German tourism industry in order to promote more equitable career development and sustainable tourism. Moreover, with regard to the shortage of skilled workers and the so-called 'war for talents', various needs of women are recognized at different levels and defined in more detail in relation to the tourism working environment. Both in the quantitative survey and in the
focus groups, great importance was attached to growth needs, such as the opportunity for self-realization and development or a sense of purpose. At the same time, however, existential needs such as working conditions and salary were also important to the women. In this context, it is noteworthy that needs from different levels of ERG theory were combined. This provides an indication that needs at different levels can also have an effect at the same time.
One limitation of the research is the lack of figures on the gender-specific employment structure in the German tourism industry. This data needs to be collected in the future to enable further research. There is also a need for further research into an intersectional approach that also takes other genders, social identities and their intersections into account.
