Due to the current CITES regulation of January 2017 regarding the trade of tropical woods, it becomes inevitable to generate alternative materials with similar material properties to be generated and established. Part of this study is an acoustic comparison of two guitars. One made of untreated tropical wood [Dalbergia nigra Benth.)] and one made of European thermally modified wood (TMT) species. [Pyrus (L.) and Alnus (Mill.)]. The method used allows a significant statement about the acoustic radiation performance of stringed and plucked instruments. The experimental setup consists of an impulse hammer for excitation of a force in the center of the bridge and a microphone for recording the signal radiated by the guitar body at a distance of one meter from the sound hole. A front-end was used to record the data, and further processing was done using analysis software to determine frequency response functions (FRFs) of the two instruments. The FRFs determined can be subdivided into several ranges which contain the different acoustic information about bass range, loudness, clarity, brightness and sharpness of the instruments. Examination of the frequency ranges reveals an acoustic similarity between the two guitars. Slight differences can be seen in the bass and loudness areas, where the guitar from TMT has a higher average level. Clearer differences are offered by the areas of clarity, where the guitar made of tropical wood shows a higher average level. In summary, the method gives an efficient acoustic impression as a function of the natural frequencies of the two guitars. The measured data show similarities and thus comparable acoustic properties of the instruments. However, additional effects such as psychoacoustic sensations or musical taste for the complete acoustic impression of an instrument are also of importance. Therefore, further empirical and fundamental research is needed to obtain a more detailed acoustic impression of the instruments. However, measuring insect biomass can be methodologically challenging, and very labour intensive. For many datasets, weight measurements are not available and the original samples may have already been lost. Size-weight equations provide a straightforward method for estimating insect biomass when the insect’s body length is known. If insects have been determined to species level one can also use the average body length given in literature. Based on the correlation between the body length and the weight of an insect, there is a variety of size-weight equations for different groups of insects. They are widely used in insect research, but have rarely been tested with independent data. We evaluated two size-weight models for carabid beetles, by Szyszko (1983) and Booij et al. (1994), drawing on previously published independent data by comparing model predictions with actual measurements of biomass, using relative deviation graphs and observed versus predicted from regression. Moreover, we also tested if the inclusion of additional taxonomic parameters, in this case subfamily, can improve results. We found that both models produced systematically biased results: Szyszko´s model gave more accurate results for larger species, while the model of Booij et al. did so for smaller species. This bias is most likely caused by the different origin of the respective training data. This underlines the restricted applicability of such models. We demonstrate that additional taxonomic parameters have the potential to increase the accuracy of size-weight equations and represent a potential solution to the issue of restricted applicability. As actual biomass measurements for carabids are scarce, data availability is limited to only few subfamilies. Until data on more subfamilies become available, we recommend a combined use of both evaluated models: Szyszko’s model for carabids ≥ 11.8 mm, and the model of Booij et al. for carabids < 11.8 mm, respectively. The findings from ProAkis (2015) show that different types of organisations such as administrative offices, public or semi-public advisory services, rural academies/universities, producer organisations, other NGOs or private consultants engaged in the Agricultural Knowledge and Innovation System (AKIS) can act as ISS. The funding of ISS can be public, private or a mix of both. A literature review indicates that studies often focus on the larger “enabling environment” and the structure of the Agricultural Knowledge and Innovation Systems (AKIS). Moreover, many authors pay particular attention to the role of public or semi-public farm advisory organisations (Knierim et al., 2015; Sulaiman 2015). The paper is based on the analysis of more than 200 case studies of publically or privately funded interactive innovation projects within the EU and beyond. The selection of cases took place under the framework of the Horizon2020-funded European research and innovation project LIAISON. European and national databases contain several thousands of projects in agriculture, forestry and rural development. We selected projects applying the interactive innovation approach from a) EU programmes (EIP-Agri, Horizon2020, Interreg, and LIFE+); b) nationally/regionally or privately funded projects; and c) informal initiatives or networks in the agri-food, forestry, bioeconomy or nature conservation area. The results indicate that publically funded IIS play a core role for legal/administrative compliance of projects. Semi-public advisory services take up this role as well, and they are strong in linking farmers with scientists, technicians, entrepreneurs etc. However, they often exist and offer efficient ISS only for those industries that have a long tradition for a sector or area (e.g. dairy, pork, poultry or club fruit). This paper shows that different types of organisations (research institutes, farmers or producer organisations, NGOs, processing or marketing SMEs, or public bodies) provide various forms of support for the studied interactive innovation groups. No particular type of organisation such as the farm advisory services are more suitable than the other organisations for the delivery of ISS. Instead, it depends on former collaboration, the particular topic, objective or capacities available as well as the cultural/political context who engages in interactive innovation and provides innovation support. Particularly, the log parameters exert a considerable influence on the volume of the stack, such as (1) the log midpoint diameter, (2) average bark thickness, (3) crookedness, and (4) log taper. Although many of these parameters have already been studied and some are already considered in many countries when measuring wood stacks, their influence has not been analyzed individually so far since a broad statistical database is needed and the data collection is very costly. Consequently, a 3D-simulation model was developed based on a cross-platform game engine. This model generates virtual wood stacks based on a data set of logs which are defined by the user. The simulation of a stack can be done in a few seconds only and each stack generated can be visualized once all iterations are done. The simulation results are the stacked cubic volume, solid wood cubic volume, and the respective conversion factors. The model, fed with both real data and user-defined data, allows for a detailed analysis of the effect of each parameter on the results, as the user can vary their values discretionary. To obtain the first results from real data, 1000 logs of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) were measured. The first simulations based on these data show reliable results and it is possible to quantify the influence of the proportion of crooked wood in a pile on the stack volume and the conversion factor. In addition, the results are highly in line with the real trials that have already been performed in parallel. A further scientific evaluation and statistical analysis will be done in a second study phase. However, the model already provides a reasonable tool that is easy to apply for the forest and wood industry in order to make the most accurate estimate possible of the solid wood content in a wood pile. Thus data related to climate change and its site specific drought effects on one hand and current soil nutrient status on the other is especially required to support decision making. Besides soil texture, soil organic carbon is one of the most important key factors controlling soil nutrient status (eg. cation-exchange capacity) and soil water storage (e.g. field capacity) in the glacial deposits of north eastern lowlands. In contrast to soil texture, which can be considered as stable over periods relevant to practical forest management, for mapping soil organic carbon and its distribution throughout the soil profile a more dynamic regionalization approach considering contemporary measurements is needed. For this purpose, data on contemporary soil organic carbon stocks is taken from the second National Forest Soil Inventory and additional regional sampling points in Brandenburg (Germany). Potential covariates representing the soil forming factors: parent material, organisms (vegetation), age, relief and climate are obtained with high spatial resolution from forest site mapping, forest inventory, digital terrain analysis and climate models. The proposed regionalization approach captures the concepts of SCORPAN modelling and depth functions. While for estimation of carbon stocks in the entire soil solum stepwise regression analysis and geostatistical techniques are involved, the methodology to derive and map relative depth functions is based on cluster analysis and classification tree approach. The intended benefits by splitting regionalisation into plot level and relative vertical depth gradients are to ensure consistency of solum stocks and single soil depths and to avoid the construction of artificial depth gradients. Furthermore, the procedure allows a straightforward interpretation of covariates in the sense of pedogenetic processes, which: (a) supports variable selection and exclusion of spurious covariates during model development and (b) may provide direct decision support regarding environmental and management effects on soil organic carbon. The obtained statistical models contain covariates related to all five soil forming factors. But, the conducted analyses especially point towards high influences of depth to groundwater table and mean slope of catchment area on soil organic carbon storage. Invoking geostatistical techniques shows no remaining variation, to be explained by spatial position and thus don’t improve overall model performance. Cluster analysis of relative depth gradients results in five Clusters of acceptable heterogeneity. The highest differences between the clusters are observed across the portions of carbon stored in the forest floor. Relative depth gradients are especially distinguished by tree species composition and stand age. Therefore, in the further development of the cultural landscape and in the management of natural resources, special importance must be attached to the habitat demands of species and the preservation of ecosystem services. The study of ecosystem services has extended its influence into spatial planning and landscape ecology, the integration of which can offer an opportunity to enhance the saliency, credibility, and legitimacy of landscape ecology in spatial planning issues. Objective: This paper proposes a methodology to detect red deer habitats for e.g. huntable game. The model is established on remote sensing based value-added information products, the derived landscape structure information and the use of spatially and temporally imprecise in-situ data (e.g. available hunting statistics). In order to realize this, four statistical model approaches were developed and their predictive performance assessed. Methods: Altogether, our results indicate that based on the data mentioned above, modeling of habitats is possible using a coherent statistical model approach. All four models showed an overall classification of > 60% and in the best case 71,4%. The models based on logistic regression using preference data derived from 5-year hunting statistics, which has been interpreted as habitat suitability. The landscape metrics (LSM) will be calculated on the basis of the Global Forest Change dataset (HANSEN et al. 2013b ). The interpolation of landcover data into landscape-level was made with the software FRAGSTAT and the moving window approach. Correlation analysis is used to identify relevant LSM serving as inputs; logistic regression was used to derive a final binary classifier for habitat suitability values. Three model variations with different sets of LSM are tested using the unstandardized regression coefficient. Results lead to an insight of the effect of each LSM but not on the strength of the effect. Furthermore, the predicted outcome is rather difficult to interpret as different units and scales for each LSM are used. Hence, we calculated the fourth model using the standardized regression coefficient. It harmonized the measurement units of the LSM and thus allowed a better comparison, interpretation, and evaluation.Conclusion: Our research reveals that applying a statistical model using coarse data is effective to identify potential red deer habitats in a significant qualitative manner. The presented approach can be analogously applied to other mammals if the relevant structural requirements and empirical habitat suitability data (e.g. home range, biotopes, and food resources) are known. The habitat preferences of red deer are best described by LSM concerning area-relation and wildlifeedge relations. Most important are edges between meadows, pastures or agricultural field and forest, as well as short paths between those elements for food resources. A large proportion of forest is important for species survival and positively influences the occurrence of red deer. Outcomes help to understand species habitat relation and on which scale wildlife perceives the landscape. In addition, they support the practical habitat management and thus the overall species diversity. Holzanatomisches Kolloquium N2 - Das DFG-Forschungsprojekt „Vorhersagbarkeit der Farbänderungen von Holz im Innenbereich - Die Auswertung in Abhängigkeit von der Strahlungsdosis als neuer Ansatz“ beschäftigt sich mit den Farbveränderungen der Oberflächen von in Mitteleuropa wachsenden Holzarten. Die optischen Eigenschaften des Holzes sind sehr unterschiedlich und im Wesentlichen abhängig von den im Holz vorhandenen chromophoren funktionellen Gruppen (z.B. phenolische Hydroxylgruppen, Doppelbindungen, Carbonylgruppen) und chromophoren Systemen (Chinone, Chinomethide, Biphenyle) (Hon 2001; Rowell et al. 2012). Sowohl zwischen verschiedenen Arten als auch innerhalb einer Holzart gibt es zum Teil erhebliche Farbschwankungen. Eine veränderte Lichtbrechung durch Strukturmerkmale wie Dreh- und Wechseldrehwuchs hat auch Einfluss auf das optische Erscheinungsbild. Farbänderungen treten bereits beim Trocknen oder Dämpfen der Hölzer auf (Aydin und Colakoglu 2005). Zudem verändert sich die Farbe der Oberfläche sowohl beim Auftragen von transparenten Oberflächenbeschichtungen („Anfeuerung des Holzes“) und durch Kombination von beidem. Licht ist der sichtbare (englisch: visible (Vis)) Teil des elektromagnetischen Spektrums, neben weiteren Spektralbereichen wie ultravioletter (UV) und infraroter (IR) Strahlung. UV-, VIS- und IR-Strahlung haben als Teile des Sonnenstrahlungsspektrums eine energetische Wirkung auf Holzoberflächen. Die Farbänderungen bei natürlicher Alterung werden durch Strahlung von UV-, VIS- und IR-Licht und der dadurch induzierten Photooxidation hervorgerufen (Hon und Chang 1982; Feist und Hon 1984; Hon und Minemura 2001). Zur optischen und chemischen Erfassung der Veränderungen der Holzoberflächen wurden in dem Projekt u.a. Farbmessungen im CIE L*a*b*-Farbraum (DIN EN ISO/CIE 11664-4:2020-03), abgeschwächte Totalreflexions-Fourier-Transformations-Infrarot-Spektroskopie (ATR-FTIR) und Spektroskopie im ultraviolett-visuellen Bereich (UV-Vis)sowie regelmäßige Farbscans der Probenoberflächen durchgeführt. Zudem wurden die Methoden der Gaschromatographie mit Massenspektrometrie-Kopplung (GC- MS) und die zelluläre UV-Mikrospektralphotometrie (UMSP) angewandt. Letzte wird im Folgenden näher erläutert. Koch 2004 führte umfangreiche, topochemische Untersuchungen über Inhaltsstoffe im Holzgewebe und deren Bedeutung für die Holzverfärbung durch. Die grundlegenden Untersuchungen zur fakultativen (an Fagus sylvatica L.) und obligatorischen (an Prunus serotina Borkh.)Farbkernbildung beinhaltete die UMSP-Methode. Damit können aromatische Verbindungen in einzelnen Zelltypen und Zellwandschichten hochauflösend, topochemisch detektiert werden. Zudem ist eine qualitative Charakterisierung bzw. Reaktionen von Inhaltsstoffen über UV-Spektren vor und nach einer Sonnenlicht-Simulation möglich. Mit Hilfe der zellulären UV-Mikrospektralphotometrie können aromatische Verbindungen (Lignin, phenolische Extraktstoffe) in einzelnen Zellwandschichten bei einer Auflösung von 0,25 μm x 0,25 μm lokalisiert werden. Die qualitative Charakterisierung von Inhaltsstoffen erfolgt über die Aufnahme von UV/Vis- Spektren im Wellenlängenbereich von 240 bis 700 nm (Messbereich für das UMSP 80, siehe Kapitel 2). Durch das spektroskopische Flächen-Scanning können die Verteilung und semi-quantitative Konzentration von Lignin und phenolischen Extraktstoffen graphisch dargestellt werden (Koch et al. 2003, Koch und Kleist 2001). Vor allem die genaue Visualisierung der farbgebenden Komponenten in den unterschiedlichen Zelltypen und Zellwandschichten sowie deren Änderung durch die Sonnenlicht-Exposition liefert weitere grundlegende Erkenntnisse über die photochemischen Reaktionen im Holzgewebe. Für die chemische Charakterisierung der Stoffe können zudem Punktmessungen mit einer Auflösung von 1 μm² durchgeführt werden. Diese UV/Vis-Extinktionsspektren werden in einem Wellenlängenbereich von 240 bis 580 nm aufgenommen. Ein Absorptionsmaximum im Wellenlängenbereich von 276 bis 280 nm ist z.B. typisch für aromatische und konjugierte Verbindungen. Nach Koch 2004 entstehen mit zunehmender Trocknungstemperatur höherkondensierte Verbindungen, die durch eine starke Verschiebung der Absorptionsmaxima in den längerwelligen Spektralbereich und insgesamt höheren Absorptionswerten charakterisiert werden. Diese Reaktionsmechanismen erklären auch das Farbverhalten des Holzes bei längerer Lichteinstrahlung, durch die ein intensives Nachdunkeln (Lichtalterung) einsetzt. Aufgrund der erheblichen Datensätze von bis zu 60.000 Messpunkten für jedes Scanning-Feld (Größe ca. 50 μm x 50 μm) wird die Auswertung der topochemischen Analysen im Gesamtvorhaben exemplarisch auf drei Holzarten und zwei Schnitttiefen mit vier Messzeitpunkten pro Setup und Behandlung (unbehandelt/extrahiert) reduziert. Die Bedarfserhebung in Brandenburg ist die erste, die sich an alle Forschenden sowohl an Fachhoch- schulen als auch an Universitäten eines ganzen Bundeslandes richtet. Erhoben werden Kenntnisstand und Bedarfe für Beratung, Schulung und technische Unterstützung im Umgang mit Daten als Basis für den lokalen und landesweiten Aufbau von Infrastruktur und Serviceangeboten. Der Fragenkatalog basiert auf einer bundesweiten Erhebung an Fachhochschulen zu FDM. Der Verbund besteht aus vier Universitäten und vier Hochschulen für Angewandte Wissenschaften[1]. Zur Weiterentwicklung von Strategien und Unterstützungsangeboten zum Forschungsdatenmanagement (FDM) – sowohl an jeder Hochschule als auch gemeinsam für Brandenburg – ist es wichtig, aktuelle FDM-Kenntnisse und Unterstützungsbedarfe der brandenburgischen Forschenden zu ermitteln. So können Angebote datenbasiert und zielgerichtet konzipiert werden. Zu diesem Zweck wurde eine quantitative Bedarfserhebung zum FDM unter den Forschenden der am Verbundprojekt beteiligten Hochschulen durchgeführt. Die Bedarfserhebung wurde als Online-Umfrage[2] in deutscher und englischer Fassung zur Verfügung gestellt. Insgesamt umfasste die Erhebung 32 Fragen zu den Themenbereichen Datenquellen/-arten, Datenspeicherung, Datenpublikation, Nachnutzung, Organisation der Forschungsdatenverwaltung, Schulungs-/Unterstützungsbedarfe sowie Kenntnisse zu rechtlichen und ethischen Aspekten im Umgang mit Forschungsdaten. Trotz stetig wachsender Anforderungen der Forschungsförderorganisationen, zeigen die Ergebnisse der Forschenden (N = 486) insgesamt einen eher niedrigen bis durchschnittlichen Kenntnisstand im professionellen Umgang mit Forschungsdaten. Als punktuelles Beispiel sind Datenmanagementpläne (DMP) ca. 55 % der Teilnehmenden unbekannt während 23 % der Teilnehmenden DMPs zwar kennen, aber nicht nutzen. 15 % der Teilnehmenden nutzen sie immer oder meistens zur Planung ihrer Forschungsvorhaben, weitere 7 % eher selten. Ein Viertel der Teilnehmenden hat bereits Forschungsdaten in einem digitalen Repositorium veröffentlicht; die Mehrheit hat dies jedoch (noch) nicht getan. Die Unterstützungsbedarfe der Forschenden sind vielfältig. Ein hoher Bedarf besteht vor allem an persönlicher Schulung und Beratung sowie technischer Unterstützung; als besonders wichtig wird Unterstützung u. a. in den Bereichen Datenpublikation/Open Access, Repositorien, Datenschutzrecht sowie Datendokumentation angesehen. Erste Schlussfolgerungen für die auf den Daten basierenden FDM-Maßnahmen für Brandenburg unterstützen die Etablierung zweier technischer Dienste: Das Tool RDMO (Research Data Management Organiser)[3] zur systematischen Planung eines Forschungsvorhabens mithilfe von DMPs und das Forschungsdatenrepositorium RADAR (Research Data Repository)[4] zur Veröffentlichung und Archivierung von Forschungsdaten. Eine bedeutende Rolle werden diesbezüglich der Aufbau eines zu verstetigenden, brandenburgweiten Helpdesks und regelmäßige Schulungsangebote spielen. Wichtige Bausteine solcher Schulungsangebote müssen u. a. Workflows zur Dokumentation, die Verwendung von Repositorien und das Thema Datenschutz sein. Weitere FDM-Maßnahmen werden aktuell anhand der in der Auswertung befindlichen Daten erarbeitet. Vorausblickend werden hierzu ebenfalls hochschul- und disziplinspezifische Aspekte beleuchtet, um möglichst passgenaue FDM-Unterstützungsangebote in Brandenburg aufzubauen. To address the growing need for structured research data management (RDM) at UASs, the FDM@HAW network has emerged as a potential connector between NFDI and UAS landscape. It aims to raise awareness of NFDI services across a diverse UAS network, and articulate UAS-specific requirements back to NFDI. In doing so, it strengthens mutual integration and fosters targeted support. With over 200 institutions [1], UASs constitute a significant part of the German science system. Traditionally focused on teaching, UASs have become drivers of applied research and regional innovation. Their contributions to education and research make them essential actors in shaping RDM in Germany. Research at UASs benefits business, science, and society. In many federal states, the right to award doctorates further reinforces their research activities. Strengthening RDM competencies is important to ensure that valuable research data from UAS meet the FAIR principles. Furthermore, employers benefit from graduates equipped with strong data literacy. Despite their potential, UASs remain underrepresented in the NFDI (and partly in the RDM community). Low participation in NFDI consortia and limited association membership indicate a broader lack of engagement, largely due to low awareness of NFDI among UAS researchers and administrations [2, p.42] [3, p.6]. The NFDI structure report 2024 addresses this gap and calls for broader contact to UASs [4, p.27]. Structural challenges limit UAS engagement in RDM and the NFDI, including high teaching loads, minor resources, and partnerships prioritizing data protection over openness or commercial interests. In response, many UASs have implemented strategic networking in research, teaching, and infrastructure to overcome resource limitations. This approach also drives the development of RDM structures, often via projects or state-level initiatives. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research supports 14 projects [5] through its funding guideline for RDM at UASs. This initiative led to the establishment of the FDM@HAW network in 2023, connecting these projects. Since its formation, the network has engaged in continuous exchange on RDM development and contributed to events such as Love Data Week, the FORTRAMA conference [6], Volkswagen Foundation's Digital Skills in Science Week [7] and E-Science-Tage [8]. These activities have helped sharpen the network's focus, identify shared priorities and integrate new members. Members contribute ideas, tools and services developed in RDM projects or collaborations - such as the "NFDI Survival Kit" [9] and the "NFDI-N(HAW)igator" [10] - to promote RDM awareness and inform about NFDI on a national scale. In line with NFDI's mission to "improv[e] the possibilities for using data for science and society" [11], FDM@HAW seeks to disseminate knowledge of and strengthen competence in delving into these possibilities. The network provides valuable support to activate a target group that has largely been untapped. Close cooperation between NFDI and FDM@HAW will then contribute to the successful development of a nationwide RDM ecosystem. In the presentation, proposals for cooperation will be outlined.
