Yet little attention has been paid to the reverse direction of this relationship, i.e. how agricultural innovation projects affect AIS in the course of their innovative activities. Accordingly, there are currently no tools to measure such AIS spillovers from agricultural innovation projects. OBJECTIVE This paper shows that even where agricultural innovation projects have not been designed with the explicit aim of influencing AIS they can have spillovers on the AIS in which they operate. Based on this finding, it argues that designing agricultural innovation projects in a way that maximises such positive and reduces negative AIS spillovers would be a useful tool for strengthening agricultural innovation capacities in a particular territory or sector. METHODS Based on the concept of agricultural innovation projects as Organisational Innovation Systems (OIS) that are embedded in AIS, the paper develops an analytical framework for assessing spillovers of such projects on AIS and applies it to a case study of an Operational Group in the German Federal State of Hessen. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS The case study shows that agricultural innovation projects may yield diverse spillovers on the AIS in which they operate. In addition to considering how agricultural innovation projects are shaped - constrained and/or enabled - by AIS, the research community on agricultural innovation should pay more attention to this side of the interrelation of AIS and agricultural innovation projects. Designing agricultural innovation projects responsibly so that spillovers on AIS are monitored can help to improve national or sectoral AIS. SIGNIFICANCE This paper points to an underexplored issue in research on agricultural innovation and, related to this, a thus far unused potential policy tool for improving national and sectoral AIS. It further develops the concept of innovation projects as OIS into an approach for assessing the effects of projects on AIS; an area of project assessment that until now has not been adequately covered.}, language = {en} } @article{AlffKonysbayevSalmyrzauly2023, author = {Alff, Henryk and Konysbayev, Talgarbay and Salmyrzauly, Ruslan}, title = {Old stereotypes and new openness: discourses and practices of trans-border re- and disconnection in south-eastern Kazakhstan's agricultural sector}, series = {Eurasian Geography and Economics}, journal = {Eurasian Geography and Economics}, publisher = {Taylor \& Francis}, issn = {1538-7216}, doi = {10.1080/15387216.2023.2169184}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:kobv:eb1-opus-6340}, pages = {23}, year = {2023}, abstract = {Since the Soviet breakup, rural communities in the Kazakhstan-China borderlands have faced cataclysmic social, economic, and ecological transformations. Collective and state farms have been replaced by precarious smallholder agriculture suffering from a decline in financial inputs and the deterioration of infrastructure. At the same time, dynamic transformations of border permeability (and trans-border reconnections) between Kazakhstan and China have challenged the until relatively recent widespread Soviet rhetoric on Western China (or rather Xinjiang) as an underdeveloped space across the border. This article is based on several months of fieldwork between 2019 and 2021 in Panfilov District, located at major cross-border road and railway intersections and hosting important infrastructural objects, such as a dry port, a major railway transhipment hub, and a trans-border special economic zone. The article explores how the border situation (and the border's changing permeability for people, commodities, and ideas since the early 1990s) as well as the implementation of new trans-border infrastructures eventually shaped local discourses and practices in the socio-economic development of south-east Kazakhstan's agricultural sector. It is scrutinized herein how various forms of trans-border socio-economic interactions (although heavily regulated) and China's (agri-) economic policy in Xinjiang started to affect farmers' ambitions and practices across the border.}, language = {en} } @misc{Wolff2023, author = {Wolff, Ian}, title = {Forschungsdatenstrategie 2023 - 2025}, organization = {Hochschule f{\"u}r nachhaltige Entwicklung Eberswalde}, doi = {10.57741/opus4-677}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:kobv:eb1-opus-6774}, pages = {25}, year = {2023}, abstract = {Diese Strategie wurde am wurde am 12. Current Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement are insufficient to avoid the irreversible loss of critical island ecosystems. Existing research, policies, and finance also do not sufficiently address small islands' social-environmental challenges. For instance, the new Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) mentions islands in the invasive species management target. This focus is important, as islands are at high risk to biological invasions; however, this is the only GBF target that mentions islands. There are threats of equal or greater urgency to small islands, including coastal hazards and overexploitation. Ecosystems such as coral reefs and mangroves are crucial for biodiversity, coastal protection, and human livelihoods, yet are unaddressed in the GBF. While research and global policy, including targeted financial flows, have a strong focus on Small Island Developing States (SIDS), the situation of other small islands has been largely overlooked. Here, through a review of policy developments and examples from islands in the Philippines and Chile, we urge that conservation and climate change policies place greater emphasis on acknowledging the diversity of small islands and their unique governance challenges, extending the focus beyond SIDS. Moving forward, global policy and research should include the recognition of small islands as metacommunities linked by interacting species and social-ecological systems to emphasize their connectivity rather than their isolation. Coalition-building and knowledge-sharing, particularly with local, Indigenous and traditional knowledge-holders from small islands, is needed to meet global goals on biodiversity and sustainable development by 2030.}, language = {en} } @misc{Goettert2023, author = {G{\"o}ttert, Thomas}, title = {Cross-Landscape Approaches to Human Wildlife Conflicts—Na{\"i}ve or Necessary?}, series = {Diversity}, volume = {15}, journal = {Diversity}, number = {5}, publisher = {MDPI}, issn = {1424-2818}, doi = {10.3390/d15050653}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:kobv:eb1-opus-6677}, year = {2023}, language = {en} } @techreport{GoettertHobelsbergerKoenigetal.2023, type = {Working Paper}, author = {G{\"o}ttert, Thomas and Hobelsberger, Christine and K{\"o}nig, Bettina and N{\"o}lting, Benjamin and Roose, Ilka}, title = {Kartierung von Nachhaltigkeitstransfer? - Entwicklung einer Methode zur Sichtbarmachung von Nachhaltigkeitstransferaktivit{\"a}ten}, doi = {10.57741/opus4-666}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:kobv:eb1-opus-6661}, pages = {35}, year = {2023}, abstract = {Im vorliegenden Diskussionspapier wird mit der „Kartierung von Nachhaltigkeitstransfer" eine Methode zur Sichtbarmachung von - und Reflexion {\"u}ber Nachhaltigkeitstransfer vorgestellt und diskutiert. Dabei stehen die Entwicklung der Methode sowie unsere Erfahrungen bei deren Anwendung im Rahmen eines Workshops mit einem Fachbereich der Hochschule f{\"u}r nachhaltige Entwicklung Eberswalde (HNEE) im September 2022 im Mittelpunkt. Ausgangspunkt der {\"U}berlegungen ist das Konzept Nachhaltigkeitstransfer. Die Motivation f{\"u}r die Entwicklung einer Methode zur besseren Sichtbarmachung resultierte aus der Beobachtung, dass viele mit der HNEE assoziierte Personen wesentlich mehr Aktivit{\"a}ten im Bereich Nachhaltigkeitstransfer durchf{\"u}hren, als ihnen in der Regel bewusst ist. Die Methode bietet die schlaglichtartige, niedrigschwellige, intuitive und nicht-wertende Erfassung und Verortung von Nachhaltigkeitstransfer in kollektiver Workshopatmosph{\"a}re und die M{\"o}glichkeit zum Gedanken- und Erfahrungsaustausch zu diesem Thema. Zentrales Element sind drei „Karten", auf denen sich die am Workshop teilnehmenden Personen mit ihren Nachhaltigkeitstransferaktivit{\"a}ten verorten. Diese zweidimensionalen Bezugssysteme erlauben die Beschreibung von Nachhaltigkeitstransfer, ohne auf einen konkreten Maßstab f{\"u}r die Einordnung abzuzielen. Ein zweiter zentraler Aspekt ist der gegenseitige Austausch und die Reflexion {\"u}ber die Nachhaltigkeitstransferaktivit{\"a}ten. Darum haben wir die Kartierungen als kollaborative Workshops angelegt, die Raum f{\"u}r die direkte Interaktion bieten. Ziel der Workshops sind nicht nur die Karten, sondern auch der Austausch unter den Teilnehmenden und die Reflexion {\"u}ber ihre Transferaktivit{\"a}ten. Nach der ersten Erprobung ist die Kartierung nach unserer Einsch{\"a}tzung eine geeignete Methode, um die Vielfalt und Komplexit{\"a}t von Nachhaltigkeitstransferaktivit{\"a}ten abzubilden. Gleichzeitig machen die Ergebnisse (z.B. Karten, Erfahrungsberichte) diese Aktivit{\"a}ten sowohl f{\"u}r die Wissenschaft als auch f{\"u}r die Praxis greifbar, was eine Voraussetzung f{\"u}r die Zusammenarbeit zwischen Praxis und Hochschule ist. So wurde den Teilnehmenden anhand der Karten bewusst, dass der Fachbereich durch zahlreiche Aktivit{\"a}ten zu (Nachhaltigkeits-)Transfer charakterisiert ist, die ein umfangreiches thematisches Spektrum sowie ein großes Praxisnetzwerk abdecken. Es zeigten sich auch „blinde Flecken", da große Unternehmen innerhalb dieses Praxisnetzwerkes zu fehlen scheinen. Die Einsatzm{\"o}glichkeiten der Kartierungsmethode reichen von einer Mikro-Ebene (individuelle Teilnehmende) bis zur Makro-Ebene (z.B. Fachbereichsprofil). Zusammenfassend kann festgehalten werden, dass die Kartierung ein Kommunikationsinstrument ist, das neue Sichtweisen auf das Thema Nachhaltigkeitstransfer erlaubt und es erm{\"o}glicht, kritische Aspekte und Bedarfe der Teilnehmenden sichtbar zu machen. Aufbauend auf diesen Ergebnissen kann die Kartierung ein Auftakt bzw. Diese 57,3 Prozent haben einen Anspruch auf Zugang zu politischer Bildung, da Bildung als Grundvoraussetzung f{\"u}r gesellschaftliche Teilhabe gilt (Deutsches Institut f{\"u}r Menschenrechte o.J.). NS-Gedenkst{\"a}tten sind beispielhafte Orte der politischen Bildung in l{\"a}ndlichen R{\"a}umen. Gedenkorte der NS-Verbrechen bieten gerade in l{\"a}ndlichen R{\"a}umen die Chance, das enge Netz des Systems Konzentrationslager und damit die Dimension der Gewalt und Vernichtung zu dokumentieren und aufzuarbeiten sowie das eigene Lebensumfeld historisch zu verstehen (Garbe 2005: 59ff.). Bestehende Fachliteratur zu NS-Gedenkst{\"a}tten und historisch-politischer Bildung bezieht sich jedoch selten explizit auf l{\"a}ndliche oder st{\"a}dtische R{\"a}ume, obwohl sich politische Bildung in ihren Voraussetzungen und Bedarfen jeweils unterscheiden (Denzer und Wießner 2019: 253; Akquisos 2021: 5ff). Mit der vorliegenden Arbeit soll ein Beitrag dazu geleistet werden, die fehlende Thematisierung der Querverbindungen zwischen politischer Bildungsarbeit an NS-Gedenkst{\"a}tten und l{\"a}ndlichen R{\"a}umen zu f{\"u}llen. Es wird sich dazu sowohl mit der gesellschaftspolitischen Bedeutung als auch mit den Erfahrungen bez{\"u}glich der Rahmenbedingungen und der Vermittlungsarbeit historisch-politischer Bildungsarbeit in l{\"a}ndlichen R{\"a}umen besch{\"a}ftigt. Im Zentrum steht dabei die Ableitung von Handlungsempfehlungen und Unterst{\"u}tzungspotenzialen, die sowohl von Bildungsorganisationen als auch von politischen Entscheidungstr{\"a}ger*innen genutzt werden k{\"o}nnen, um ihre Angebote oder Entscheidungen an die herausgearbeiteten Bedarfe anzupassen. Als Grundlage zur Erarbeitung der Ergebnisse und Schlussfolgerungen dienten leitfadengest{\"u}tzte Expert*inneninterviews mit Akteur*innen aus der Praxis der l{\"a}ndlichen Gedenkst{\"a}ttenarbeit, die mit Hilfe der inhaltlich strukturierenden Inhaltsanalyse ausgewertet wurden. Die Interviewparter*innen bet{\"a}tigen sich an kleinen Gedenkst{\"a}tten ehemaliger Konzentrationslager oder Lager der Zwangsarbeit in Deutschland, die in der Regel von zivilgesellschaftlichem Engagement oder maximal zwei p{\"a}dagogischen Mitarbeiter*innen inhaltlich gepr{\"a}gt werden. Dar{\"u}ber hinaus liegen die Orte sehr l{\"a}ndlich und in einer weniger guten sozio{\"o}konomischen Lage (nach K{\"u}pper 2016: 26). Im Ergebnis sind viele der Gedenkst{\"a}tten aus den Interviews mit {\"a}hnlichen, strukturellen Aufgaben konfrontiert: Mit Fragen der Tr{\"a}gerschaft und Finanzierung, Herausforderungen des generationellen Wandels in den eigenen Ehrenamts-Strukturen, Gegebenheiten einer schlechten oder nicht vorhandenen Anbindung an den {\"O}PNV, Themen des gesellschaftlichen und politischen R{\"u}ckhalts oder Entwicklungen der Professionalisierung in der p{\"a}dagogischen Arbeit. Although various research approaches have tackled technological innovations in the last few decades, the specificities and enabling conditions of individual sustainability innovations remain rather unknown. We therefore propose an analytical framework, built on learning from the social-ecological systems and transitions literature. The sustainability innovation framework features four dimensions: context, actors, process and outcomes, which are detailed in 31 variables. We use the sustainability innovation framework to analyze two case studies selected in the Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve, Germany. The first refers to technological and organizational innovation in mobility, while the second relates to social and organizational innovation in agriculture. As a result, we highlight commonalities and differences in enabling conditions and variables between the two cases, which underpin the influence of trust, commitment, resource availability, experimenting, learning, advocating, and cooperating for innovation development. The cases further demonstrate that sustainability innovations develop as bundles of interdependent, entangled novelties, due to their disruptive character. Their specificity thereby resides in positive outcomes in terms of social-ecological integrity and equity. This study therefore contributes to transitions studies via a detailed characterization of sustainability innovations and of their outcomes, as well as through a generic synthesis of variables into an analytical framework that is applicable to a large and diverse range of individual sustainability innovations. Further empirical studies should test these findings in other contexts, to pinpoint generic innovation development patterns and to develop a typology of sustainability innovation archetypes.}, language = {en} } @techreport{DickhutStrasdasGoergeetal.2023, author = {Dickhut, Heike and Strasdas, Wolfgang and Goerge, Marius and Schulze D{\"u}ding, Johanna}, title = {Messung der Nachhaltigkeit des Tourismus in Deutschland}, number = {73}, editor = {Umweltbundesamt,}, publisher = {Umweltbundesamt}, address = {Dessau-Roßlau}, issn = {1862-4804}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:kobv:eb1-opus-6531}, pages = {350}, year = {2023}, abstract = {Mit dem hier vorgelegten Projekt wurden zwei Hauptziele verfolgt. Zun{\"a}chst wurde das sogenannte Tourismus Sustainability Satellite Account (TSSA), ein Bilanzierungssystem zur Messung der Nachhaltigkeit des Deutschlandtourismus, das in der vorangegangenen Projektphase erstmalig entwickelt und angewendet wurde, nun mit den aktuell verf{\"u}gbaren Daten erneut bef{\"u}llt. Beim TSSA handelt es sich um ein erweitertes Tourismus-Satellitenkonto (TSA) bzw. ein Kennzahlensystem, welches im Wesentlichen auf den statistischen Rahmenwerken der Volkswirtschaftlichen Gesamtrechnungen (VGR) und Umwelt{\"o}konomischen Gesamtrechnungen (UGR) beruht. Hinzu kommen soziale Indikatoren, die die Nachhaltigkeit der Arbeitsverh{\"a}ltnisse im Tourismus messen. Das TSSA erlaubt somit eine systematische Zuordnung der {\"o}konomischen, {\"o}kologischen und sozialen Auswirkungen des Tourismus zu den tourismusrelevanten Wirtschaftszweigen auf nationaler Ebene. Im Ergebnis der TSSA-Aktualisierung zeigt sich, dass der Tourismus in Deutschland weiterhin signifikant zur Wertsch{\"o}pfung und zur Schaffung von Arbeitspl{\"a}tzen beitr{\"a}gt. Rund 3,6 \% bzw. 6,1 \% der Gesamtbruttowertsch{\"o}pfung und -besch{\"a}ftigung standen im Jahr 2019 im Zusammenhang mit dem Tourismus. Die Arbeitsproduktivit{\"a}t im Tourismussektor ist allerdings weiterhin relativ gering. Bei den {\"o}kologischen Auswirkungen zeigt sich ein im Vergleich zur letzten Messung (mit Daten von 2015 oder 2016) leicht gestiegener Energieverbrauch bei allerdings zur{\"u}ckgehender Energieintensit{\"a}t. Diese ist im Tourismus {\"a}hnlich hoch wie im Durchschnitt der deutschen Volkswirtschaft. Bei den tourismusinduzierten Emissionen von Treibhausgasen (THG) und besonders bei der Emissionsintensit{\"a}t sind ebenfalls Verbesserungen zu beobachten, doch liegt die Emissionsintensit{\"a}t der Tourismuswirtschaft immer noch deutlich {\"u}ber dem volkswirtschaftlichen Durchschnitt. Innerhalb der deutschen Tourismuswirtschaft tr{\"a}gt weiterhin der Verkehrssektor (insb. Flug- und Schiffsverkehr) am st{\"a}rksten zum Energieverbrauch und zu den THG-Emissionen bei. Dagegen ist der tourismusinduzierte Wasserverbrauch deutschlandweit als eher unproblematisch einzusch{\"a}tzen. Die Wasserintensit{\"a}t des Tourismus liegt deutlich unter dem Durchschnitt der deutschen Volkswirtschaft. Innerhalb des Tourismus ist sie am h{\"o}chsten in den Sektoren Beherbergung und Gastronomie. Bez{\"u}glich der sozialen Nachhaltigkeitsdimension ist der relativ geringe und im Zeitverlauf abnehmende Verdienstabstand zwischen M{\"a}nnern und Frauen (bekannt als Gender Pay Gap; hier unbereinigt) in der Tourismuswirtschaft hervorzuheben. Alle anderen Kennzahlen in Bezug auf die Arbeitsbedingungen im Tourismus fallen dagegen weiterhin eher negativ aus. Dementsprechend werden diese von den Besch{\"a}ftigten der Branche im Vergleich zum Durchschnitt der deutschen Gesamtwirtschaft als schlechter eingesch{\"a}tzt. Bereits w{\"a}hrend der vorangegangenen Projektphase zeigte sich, dass f{\"u}r einige Nachhaltigkeitsindikatoren, vor allem aus dem {\"o}kologischen Bereich, eine Ber{\"u}cksichtigung im Rahmen des TSSA-Ansatzes nicht uneingeschr{\"a}nkt m{\"o}glich ist. Dies liegt unter anderem an der unzureichenden Datenlage in der amtlichen Statistik sowie der Komplexit{\"a}t, bestimmte {\"o}kologische Effekte kausal dem Tourismus zuzuordnen. Daher wurde im zweiten Teil des hier vorgelegten Projekts f{\"u}r die Umweltindikatoren „Biodiversit{\"a}t", „Wasserqualit{\"a}t", „L{\"a}rmbelastung", „Fl{\"a}cheninanspruchnahme", „Luftemissionen" und „Abfallaufkommen" sowie f{\"u}r den sozialen Indikator „Tourismusakzeptanz" eine ausf{\"u}hrliche Recherche bestehender Datengrundlagen durchgef{\"u}hrt und darauf aufbauend evaluiert, inwieweit alternative Bilanzierungsans{\"a}tze - als Erg{\"a}nzung zum TSSA-Messsystem - den Tourismuseffekt abbilden k{\"o}nnen. Im Rahmen des Datenscreenings best{\"a}tigte sich zun{\"a}chst die mangelhafte Datenlage auf Bundesebene. Die Machbarkeitsanalyse kam nachfolgend zu dem Ergebnis, dass eine r{\"a}umliche Differenzierung nach dem Grad touristischer Relevanz, gemessen an Tourismusdichte und -intensit{\"a}t, und eine daran ankn{\"u}pfende Analyse der Ver{\"a}nderung von Umweltbedingungen in stark touristisch gepr{\"a}gten Regionen mit Vergleich zum gesamtdeutschen Durchschnitt eine M{\"o}glichkeit darstellt, um den Beitrag des Tourismus beispielsweise zur Fl{\"a}chenversiegelung zu quantifizieren. Einerseits k{\"o}nnte daf{\"u}r auf bereits bestehende amtliche Regionaldaten zur{\"u}ckgegriffen werden. Andererseits w{\"a}ren bei bestimmten Umweltindikatoren auch zus{\"a}tzliche Datenerhebungen auf lokaler Ebene in der Zukunft notwendig. An increasing number of studies is investigating insect population trends based on time series data. However, the available data is often subject to temporal pseudoreplication. Inter-annual variability of environmental conditions and strong fluctuations in insect abundances can impede reliable trend estimation. Temporal random effect structures in regression models have been proposed as solution for this issue, but remain controversial. 2. We investigated trends in ground beetle abundance across 24 years using generalised linear mixed models. We fitted four models: A base model, a model featuring a random year intercept, a model featuring basic weather parameters, and a model featuring both random year intercept and weather parameters. We then performed a simple sensitivity analysis to assess the robustness of the four models with respect to influential years, also testing for possible spurious baseline and snapshot effects. 3. The model structure had a significant impact on the overall magnitude of the estimated trends. However, we found almost no difference among the models in how the removal of single years (sensitivity analysis) relatively affected trend coefficients. The two models with a random year intercept yielded significantly larger confidence intervals and their p-values were more sensitive during sensitivity analysis. Significant differences of the model with random year intercept and weather parameters to all other models suggest that the random year effects and specific weather effects are rather additive than interchangeable. 4. We conclude that random year intercepts help to produce more reliable and cautious uncertainty measures for insect population trends. Moreover, they might help to identify influential years in sensitivity analyses more easily. But in addition to this, grazing livestock fulfils other fundamentally important roles, one of which is the maintenance of open landscapes, which in turn provides habitat for many rare plant and animal species. Whether wild large herbivores, such as red deer (Cervus elaphus), benefit from the management of the open landscapes is unknown, and there are conflicting views on the nature of the interaction between livestock and wildlife. To investigate this question, we studied interactions in space and time between red deer and livestock in an 787 ha fenced pasture in eastern Germany. First, we used faecal pellet counts to determine whether red deer were using the fenced pasture and whether livestock were using the entire available pasture. Second, we fitted ten red deer, as well as eight Konik horses (Equus ferus caballus) and eight Heck cattle (Bos taurus) with GPS-collars. These data allowed us to perform analyses of space-time interactions. The faecal pellet data showed that red deer did indeed use the fenced pasture and that livestock used the entire extent of the pasture. In Germany, as in many other European countries, it is a very important species both culturally and economically. Few studies have focused on bark volumes being delivered to the wood industry together with the roundwood, being potentially a valuable resource for material or energetic utilization. Therefore, logs from six different forest sites were collected and bark variables including double bark thickness (DBT) in three different categories, diameter, and bark damage (as a degree of miss-DBT) in three different categories, diameter, and bark damage (as a degree of miss-ing bark) were measured and analyzed in order to model bark volume (Vbark) and bark mass (Mbark). The correlation analysis using Pearson's method showed that the highest correlation coefficients were observed from the correla-tion between DBT and Vbark, as well as between DBT and Mbark. Also, results demonstrated that with DBT greater than 20 mm, the percentage of Vbark exceeded 20\%. Finally, different linear regression models were recommended to predict Vbark and Mbark based on the other variables. Most remote-sensing-based land use classification approaches are categorical in nature, and thus they are unable to capture these changes. We have developed an approach to detecting the timing of land fragmentation based on textural information from a time series of Landsat images for four Central Asian countries (Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan) between 1990 and 2019. Our results showed that detected fragmentation events correspond well with documented agrarian reform processes in the different countries, and validation yielded maximum overall accuracies between 67 and 73\%. One important way in which canteens can contribute to this transformation is by increasing the share of organic and local products. These new political and public demands contrast with the organizational development of canteens over the past few decades, which has mainly been characterized by an increase in economic efficiency and a reduction in costs. Based on a project that was carried out in the Berlin-Brandenburg region (Germany), this paper exemplifies some of the challenges canteens face in the process of introducing organic and local products. Methods The empirical results are based on 31 qualitative interviews with canteen managers and kitchen staff as well as with the processing company involved. In addition, a survey of 500 canteen guests was conducted in the participating canteens. Results The analysis shows that the canteens had to adapt various organizational practices to ensure a healthy and sustainable diet at manageable cost. Introducing local organic beef in the canteens requires close cooperation with local farmers and processors, a change in procurement practices, transparency around the origin of the products, as well as adapted menu planning. Discussion Based on the empirical results, the paper discusses how these challenges can be met and which supportive measures can be taken on different governance levels. To change entrenched practices, process facilitators who support local cooperation along the value added chain are needed, and practical knowledge and professional training must be provided. The article concludes that there is a great potential to foster a sustainable and healthy diet via public and private canteens if the tension between efficiency and sustainability orientation can be overcome by adapting framework conditions.}, language = {en} } @article{GoettertPerry2023, author = {G{\"o}ttert, Thomas and Perry, Gad}, title = {Going Wild in the City—Animal Feralization and Its Impacts on Biodiversity in Urban Environments}, series = {Animals}, volume = {13}, journal = {Animals}, number = {4}, editor = {Bakaloudis, Dimitrios}, publisher = {MDPI}, issn = {2076-2615}, doi = {10.3390/ani13040747}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:kobv:eb1-opus-3992}, year = {2023}, abstract = {Simple Summary Understanding the impact of urbanization on biodiversity is a crucial task of our time. Here, we reflect on the importance of feralization in the relationship between ongoing urbanization and the worsening biodiversity crisis. Feralization is often viewed as the exact opposite of a domestication process—a perception that we argue is too simplistic. The interrelations between domestication, feralization, and the adaptation of taxa to novel, human-made environments such as cities are complex. Given their unique traits, feral(izing) taxa can play key roles in sustainability, sometimes problematic (i.e., invasive species) but at other times, improving human well-being in urban settings. Abstract Domestication describes a range of changes to wild species as they are increasingly brought under human selection and husbandry. Feralization is the process whereby a species leaves the human sphere and undergoes increasing natural selection in a wild context, which may or may not be geographically adjacent to where the originator wild species evolved prior to domestication. Distinguishing between domestic, feral, and wild species can be difficult, since some populations of so-called "wild species" are at least partly descended from domesticated "populations" (e.g., junglefowl, European wild sheep) and because transitions in both directions are gradual rather than abrupt. In urban settings, prior selection for coexistence with humans provides particular benefit for a domestic organism that undergoes feralization. One risk is that such taxa can become invasive not just at the site of release/escape but far away. As humanity becomes increasingly urban and pristine environments rapidly diminish, we believe that feralized populations also hold conservation value.}, language = {en} } @misc{WenigReppeHorbeltetal.2023, author = {Wenig, Charlett and Reppe, Friedrich and Horbelt, Nils and Spener, Jaromir and Berendt, Ferr{\´e}ol and Cremer, Tobias and Burgert, Ingo and Eder, Michaela}, title = {Adhesives free bark panels: an alternative application for a waste material}, doi = {10.17617/3.AZRWF3}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:kobv:eb1-opus-6118}, year = {2023}, language = {en} } @article{WenigReppeHorbeltetal.2023, author = {Wenig, Charlett and Reppe, Friedrich and Horbelt, Nils and Spener, Jaromir and Berendt, Ferr{\´e}ol and Cremer, Tobias and Frey, Marion and Burgert, Ingo and Eder, Michaela}, title = {Adhesives free bark panels: An alternative application for a waste material}, series = {PloS one}, volume = {18}, journal = {PloS one}, number = {1}, publisher = {Public Library of Science (PLoS)}, doi = {10.1371/journal.pone.0280721}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:kobv:eb1-opus-6104}, year = {2023}, abstract = {The proportion of bark in tree trunks is in the range of ~ 10-20\%. This large amount of material is currently mainly considered as a by- or even waste-product by the timber processing industry. Recently, efforts towards the use of bark have been made, e.g. as a raw material to harvest different chemical compounds or as an additive for wood particle boards. Our motivation for this work was to keep the bark in an almost natural state and explore alternative processes and applications for use. The traditional method of de-barking tree trunks by peeling was used to harvest large bark pieces. Two pieces of peeled bark were placed crosswise, with the rhytidom side (outer bark) facing each other. After different conditioning steps, bark pieces were hot pressed to panels without adding adhesives. These experiments on bark samples of different Central European tree species suggest that production of panels with species dependent properties is possible and feasible. Forest fragmentation not only poses a threat to many organisms but also reduces the resistance and resilience of the ecosystem, which is especially relevant to the ongoing climate crisis. The effects of recent extreme heat years on forests in Germany have not been studied in detail for the influence of fragmentation. We investigate the relation of forest fragmentation with temperature and vitality in Germany per ecoregion at the canopy level using satellite imagery at 1-km and 30-m resolution. We compiled and correlated forest maps for connectivity based on Thiessen polygons, canopy temperatures on the hottest days based on land surface temperature, and forest vitality based on the maximum normalized difference vegetation index per growing season. We differentiated between ecoregions and main forest types. In 2022, larger intact tree-covered areas that are less fragmented have relatively low temperatures on hot days and higher overall vitality. Nearly 98\% of the almost 1.95 million forest fragments at 30-m resolution in Germany are smaller than 1 km2, which cover nearly 30\% of the total forest area. To counteract the forest crisis, forest and landscape management should aim to reduce fragmentation and maintain tree biomass and forest cover in the landscape. Increasing the size of continuous forest fragments contributes to ecosystem-based adaptation to climate change.}, language = {en} }
