As part of a real-life laboratory, two services were developed and tested with the aim of improving rural supply: the delivery of regional goods and the return of online orders in cooperation with a regional public transport provider, regional retailers and parcel services. An evaluation team provided support to the project in identifying, monitoring, and documenting the societal impact of the services and promoted impact-oriented project management. The concept of providing services of general interest through social logistics and testing them in a real-world laboratory was based on preliminary work in the region. The results indicate that this approach can promote this type of social logistics in the long term. A social logistics approach does not focus solely on economic aspects but emphasises social and environmental benefits for the region. A real-world laboratory approach enables an environment that promotes open exchange, involvement of different stakeholders and joint problem solving in a reflective, iterative process. The use of digital technologies can support this by designing and managing resource-efficient and context-specific agricultural systems. We present the Digital Agricultural Knowledge and Information System (DAKIS) to demonstrate an approach that employs digital technologies to enable decision-making towards diversified and sustainable agriculture. To develop the DAKIS, we specified, together with stakeholders, requirements for a knowledge-based decision-support tool and reviewed the literature to identify limitations in the current generation of tools. The results of the review point towards recurring challenges regarding the consideration of ecosystem services and biodiversity, the capacity to foster communication and cooperation between farmers and other actors, and the ability to link multiple spatiotemporal scales and sustainability levels. To overcome these challenges, the DAKIS provides a digital platform to support farmers' decision-making on land use and management via an integrative spatiotemporally explicit approach that analyses a wide range of data from various sources. The approach integrates remote and in situ sensors, artificial intelligence, modelling, stakeholder-stated demand for biodiversity and ecosystem services, and participatory sustainability impact assessment to address the diverse drivers affecting agricultural land use and management design, including natural and agronomic factors, economic and policy considerations, and socio-cultural preferences and settings. Ultimately, the DAKIS embeds the consideration of ecosystem services, biodiversity, and sustainability into farmers' decision-making and enables learning and progress towards site-adapted small-scale multifunctional and diversified agriculture while simultaneously supporting farmers' objectives and societal demands.}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{SteinherrKrachunovaBirkmannetal.2023, author = {Steinherr, L. and Krachunova, T. and Birkmann, A. and Acosta Ortiz, D. Although farmers introduced food crops into agricultural production to ensure food security after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the government still mandates that cotton cultivation occupy a considerable portion of Tajikistan's limited irrigated land. However, following the recent Covid-19 pandemic crisis, farmers have encountered the need to reassess their agricultural practices, given constrained governmental assistance and a range of socioeconomic considerations. This research adopts resilience as a conceptual framework to examine the coping strategies of smallholder farmers in the Khatlon region of Tajikistan, with a specific emphasis on the period spanning from 2019 to 2022. At the outset, our research employed the snowballing technique to increase respondent participation, later transitioning to a representative sample size that facilitated the collection of qualitative data from around 100 semi-structured interviews, 10 focus groups, and personal visits to agricultural fields over the course of four years. The paper not only demonstrates the overall creativity of Tajikistani farmers in growing and selecting non-cotton crops in this most recent period of crisis, but also points to wealthier farmers' generally greater willingness to adopt technological innovations and gain new knowledge to apply to them. Although these strategies have been taken in order to address farmers' immediate needs in troubled times against the backdrop of the existing state cotton policy, their sustainability remains uncertain. While the qualitative focus of this study bears certain inherent limitations, the data collected nevertheless show that this period of crisis has been generative for many farmers as they seek out new methods of subsistence.}, language = {en} } @article{LitschelBerendtCremer2023, author = {Litschel, Johannes and Berendt, Ferr{\´e}ol and Cremer, Tobias}, title = {Holzbauquote in Berlin-Brandenburg steigern}, series = {Holz-Zentralblatt}, volume = {149}, journal = {Holz-Zentralblatt}, number = {35}, publisher = {DRW-Verlag Weinbrenner GmbH \& Co. The temporal lag between environmental impacts and visible tree response can lead to a lack of understanding for the consequences of human actions and management decisions, especially in the perspective of drastically changing climatic conditions through climate change. This study aims to establish a research setup, which can deliver data on the impacts of environmental parameters on tree-physiology parameters. It examines whether the constructed research setup can deliver sufficient data to display cause-effect relationships between the parameters. Detected correlations could be used to create a data-based model, which can make the research results accessible and visible for users. For this purpose, stem radius fluctuations of multiple individuals of Fagus sylvatica were measured in micrometer resolution with point-dendrometers in a research area located at the Digital Forest Lab Haselberg. Stem radius changes can be traced back to either growth processes or tree-water movements. The data was processes based on the Zero-Growth concept by Roman Zweifel et al. with the R-package treenetproc and tested for correlations. The results showed correlations between environmental parameters and tree-physiology parameters but varied for seasonal and trend components of analyzed time series. Rising temperatures and connected environmental parameters showed a decreasing effect on stem radiuses on a daily basis but correlated positive with growth and stem radius expansion overall. A clear diurnal pattern was detected, induced by day-and-night-cycle of the environmental parameters, which influenced tree parameters and caused a similar pattern. While correlations were confirmed, trees showed differing behavior in their response to environmental conditions, which could not be fully explained within the current research setup. Further research in an enhanced setup is necessary to deliver satisfying answers and to create a reliable model, which can be utilized as an interactive user-experience in the Digital Forest Lab Haselberg, to foster understanding for the ecological impacts of changing environmental conditions.}, language = {en} } @article{KaiserRettigHoerning2023, author = {Kaiser, Annemarie and Rettig, Max and H{\"o}rning, Bernhard}, title = {Zweinutzungsh{\"u}hner im Fokus: Wer forscht wo?}, series = {DGS: Magazin f{\"u}r Gefl{\"u}gelwirtschaft}, journal = {DGS: Magazin f{\"u}r Gefl{\"u}gelwirtschaft}, publisher = {Ulmer}, issn = {0947-5664}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:kobv:eb1-opus-7932}, pages = {28 -- 31}, year = {2023}, abstract = {Aktuell untersuchen mehrere Forschungsvorhaben die Leistungen verschiedener Zweinutzungsherk{\"u}nfte unter Praxis- und Stationsbedingungen. The starting point and central element of this paper are reflections from selected students representing the field of environmental sciences. Students contribute as co authors of this paper. The student co authors were asked by the lead authors to share their experiences with photography. The lead authors analysed these reflections using a grounded theory approach. On this basis, we were able to identify four key areas that are of particular importance: 1) learning, 2) skills development, 3) communication, and 4) personal development. In addition we considered the limitations and challenges in the use of photography for students, ethical aspects to be considered when using photography in the context of science and education and student advice for educators. The lead authors' interpretation and enrichment of the student reflections led to interesting trains of thought, which are brought to light in our discussion. Our paper highlights the importance of viewing the subject of photography from diverse perspectives. By doing so, various insight and outlier perspectives emerged that were not expected. The student experiences underline the importance of the close connection between learning and emotional recall. In particular, the topic of personal development and the aspect of joy and fun in the context of photography were highlighted. It also became clear that the students' point of view emphasized the process of taking photographs and sometimes even value this process more than t he end result the actual photo. Finally, we also addressed our ethnic, cultural, and disciplinary bias and mentioned the digital divide. Aspects such as transport and slaughtering conditions are often overlooked in both production standards and communications with consumers. Long transport routes and conventional slaughtering can cause significant stress to animals and have negative impacts on their welfare and on meat quality. On-farm slaughter can address these criticisms. Communicating the value of low-stress slaughtering conditions like on-farm slaughtering may offer significant sales potential for a premium market segment. In this study, we explore consumers' preferences and willingness to pay for beef that is slaughtered on-farm rather than in conventional abattoirs. We conducted an online survey (n = 400) in 2022, with a sample that is representative of the German population with respect to gender, age, income and education. Our survey included a discrete choice experiment for the purchase of minced beef, incorporating product attributes that influence purchase decisions. These included: price, information on the social, economic and environmental benefits of regional production, different production standards (conventional/organic) and information on on-farm slaughtering. Our findings indicate that consumers derive the highest utility from a low price, followed by information about on-farm slaughtering. Yet little attention has been paid to the reverse direction of this relationship, i.e. how agricultural innovation projects affect AIS in the course of their innovative activities. Accordingly, there are currently no tools to measure such AIS spillovers from agricultural innovation projects. OBJECTIVE This paper shows that even where agricultural innovation projects have not been designed with the explicit aim of influencing AIS they can have spillovers on the AIS in which they operate. Based on this finding, it argues that designing agricultural innovation projects in a way that maximises such positive and reduces negative AIS spillovers would be a useful tool for strengthening agricultural innovation capacities in a particular territory or sector. METHODS Based on the concept of agricultural innovation projects as Organisational Innovation Systems (OIS) that are embedded in AIS, the paper develops an analytical framework for assessing spillovers of such projects on AIS and applies it to a case study of an Operational Group in the German Federal State of Hessen. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS The case study shows that agricultural innovation projects may yield diverse spillovers on the AIS in which they operate. In addition to considering how agricultural innovation projects are shaped - constrained and/or enabled - by AIS, the research community on agricultural innovation should pay more attention to this side of the interrelation of AIS and agricultural innovation projects. Designing agricultural innovation projects responsibly so that spillovers on AIS are monitored can help to improve national or sectoral AIS. SIGNIFICANCE This paper points to an underexplored issue in research on agricultural innovation and, related to this, a thus far unused potential policy tool for improving national and sectoral AIS. It further develops the concept of innovation projects as OIS into an approach for assessing the effects of projects on AIS; an area of project assessment that until now has not been adequately covered.}, language = {en} } @article{AlffKonysbayevSalmyrzauly2023, author = {Alff, Henryk and Konysbayev, Talgarbay and Salmyrzauly, Ruslan}, title = {Old stereotypes and new openness: discourses and practices of trans-border re- and disconnection in south-eastern Kazakhstan's agricultural sector}, series = {Eurasian Geography and Economics}, journal = {Eurasian Geography and Economics}, publisher = {Taylor \& Francis}, issn = {1538-7216}, doi = {10.1080/15387216.2023.2169184}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:kobv:eb1-opus-6340}, pages = {23}, year = {2023}, abstract = {Since the Soviet breakup, rural communities in the Kazakhstan-China borderlands have faced cataclysmic social, economic, and ecological transformations. Collective and state farms have been replaced by precarious smallholder agriculture suffering from a decline in financial inputs and the deterioration of infrastructure. At the same time, dynamic transformations of border permeability (and trans-border reconnections) between Kazakhstan and China have challenged the until relatively recent widespread Soviet rhetoric on Western China (or rather Xinjiang) as an underdeveloped space across the border. This article is based on several months of fieldwork between 2019 and 2021 in Panfilov District, located at major cross-border road and railway intersections and hosting important infrastructural objects, such as a dry port, a major railway transhipment hub, and a trans-border special economic zone. The article explores how the border situation (and the border's changing permeability for people, commodities, and ideas since the early 1990s) as well as the implementation of new trans-border infrastructures eventually shaped local discourses and practices in the socio-economic development of south-east Kazakhstan's agricultural sector. It is scrutinized herein how various forms of trans-border socio-economic interactions (although heavily regulated) and China's (agri-) economic policy in Xinjiang started to affect farmers' ambitions and practices across the border.}, language = {en} } @misc{Wolff2023, author = {Wolff, Ian}, title = {Forschungsdatenstrategie 2023 - 2025}, organization = {Hochschule f{\"u}r nachhaltige Entwicklung Eberswalde}, doi = {10.57741/opus4-677}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:kobv:eb1-opus-6774}, pages = {25}, year = {2023}, abstract = {Diese Strategie wurde am wurde am 12. Current Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement are insufficient to avoid the irreversible loss of critical island ecosystems. Existing research, policies, and finance also do not sufficiently address small islands' social-environmental challenges. For instance, the new Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) mentions islands in the invasive species management target. This focus is important, as islands are at high risk to biological invasions; however, this is the only GBF target that mentions islands. There are threats of equal or greater urgency to small islands, including coastal hazards and overexploitation. Ecosystems such as coral reefs and mangroves are crucial for biodiversity, coastal protection, and human livelihoods, yet are unaddressed in the GBF. While research and global policy, including targeted financial flows, have a strong focus on Small Island Developing States (SIDS), the situation of other small islands has been largely overlooked. Here, through a review of policy developments and examples from islands in the Philippines and Chile, we urge that conservation and climate change policies place greater emphasis on acknowledging the diversity of small islands and their unique governance challenges, extending the focus beyond SIDS. Moving forward, global policy and research should include the recognition of small islands as metacommunities linked by interacting species and social-ecological systems to emphasize their connectivity rather than their isolation. Coalition-building and knowledge-sharing, particularly with local, Indigenous and traditional knowledge-holders from small islands, is needed to meet global goals on biodiversity and sustainable development by 2030.}, language = {en} } @misc{Goettert2023, author = {G{\"o}ttert, Thomas}, title = {Cross-Landscape Approaches to Human Wildlife Conflicts—Na{\"i}ve or Necessary?}, series = {Diversity}, volume = {15}, journal = {Diversity}, number = {5}, publisher = {MDPI}, issn = {1424-2818}, doi = {10.3390/d15050653}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:kobv:eb1-opus-6677}, year = {2023}, language = {en} } @techreport{GoettertHobelsbergerKoenigetal.2023, type = {Working Paper}, author = {G{\"o}ttert, Thomas and Hobelsberger, Christine and K{\"o}nig, Bettina and N{\"o}lting, Benjamin and Roose, Ilka}, title = {Kartierung von Nachhaltigkeitstransfer? NS-Gedenkst{\"a}tten sind beispielhafte Orte der politischen Bildung in l{\"a}ndlichen R{\"a}umen. Although various research approaches have tackled technological innovations in the last few decades, the specificities and enabling conditions of individual sustainability innovations remain rather unknown. We therefore propose an analytical framework, built on learning from the social-ecological systems and transitions literature. The sustainability innovation framework features four dimensions: context, actors, process and outcomes, which are detailed in 31 variables. We use the sustainability innovation framework to analyze two case studies selected in the Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve, Germany. The first refers to technological and organizational innovation in mobility, while the second relates to social and organizational innovation in agriculture. As a result, we highlight commonalities and differences in enabling conditions and variables between the two cases, which underpin the influence of trust, commitment, resource availability, experimenting, learning, advocating, and cooperating for innovation development. The cases further demonstrate that sustainability innovations develop as bundles of interdependent, entangled novelties, due to their disruptive character. Their specificity thereby resides in positive outcomes in terms of social-ecological integrity and equity. This study therefore contributes to transitions studies via a detailed characterization of sustainability innovations and of their outcomes, as well as through a generic synthesis of variables into an analytical framework that is applicable to a large and diverse range of individual sustainability innovations. Further empirical studies should test these findings in other contexts, to pinpoint generic innovation development patterns and to develop a typology of sustainability innovation archetypes.}, language = {en} } @techreport{DickhutStrasdasGoergeetal.2023, author = {Dickhut, Heike and Strasdas, Wolfgang and Goerge, Marius and Schulze D{\"u}ding, Johanna}, title = {Messung der Nachhaltigkeit des Tourismus in Deutschland}, number = {73}, editor = {Umweltbundesamt,}, publisher = {Umweltbundesamt}, address = {Dessau-Roßlau}, issn = {1862-4804}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:kobv:eb1-opus-6531}, pages = {350}, year = {2023}, abstract = {Mit dem hier vorgelegten Projekt wurden zwei Hauptziele verfolgt. An increasing number of studies is investigating insect population trends based on time series data. However, the available data is often subject to temporal pseudoreplication. Inter-annual variability of environmental conditions and strong fluctuations in insect abundances can impede reliable trend estimation. Temporal random effect structures in regression models have been proposed as solution for this issue, but remain controversial. 2. We investigated trends in ground beetle abundance across 24 years using generalised linear mixed models. We fitted four models: A base model, a model featuring a random year intercept, a model featuring basic weather parameters, and a model featuring both random year intercept and weather parameters. We then performed a simple sensitivity analysis to assess the robustness of the four models with respect to influential years, also testing for possible spurious baseline and snapshot effects. 3. The model structure had a significant impact on the overall magnitude of the estimated trends. However, we found almost no difference among the models in how the removal of single years (sensitivity analysis) relatively affected trend coefficients. The two models with a random year intercept yielded significantly larger confidence intervals and their p-values were more sensitive during sensitivity analysis. Significant differences of the model with random year intercept and weather parameters to all other models suggest that the random year effects and specific weather effects are rather additive than interchangeable. 4. We conclude that random year intercepts help to produce more reliable and cautious uncertainty measures for insect population trends. Moreover, they might help to identify influential years in sensitivity analyses more easily. But in addition to this, grazing livestock fulfils other fundamentally important roles, one of which is the maintenance of open landscapes, which in turn provides habitat for many rare plant and animal species. Whether wild large herbivores, such as red deer (Cervus elaphus), benefit from the management of the open landscapes is unknown, and there are conflicting views on the nature of the interaction between livestock and wildlife. To investigate this question, we studied interactions in space and time between red deer and livestock in an 787 ha fenced pasture in eastern Germany. First, we used faecal pellet counts to determine whether red deer were using the fenced pasture and whether livestock were using the entire available pasture. Second, we fitted ten red deer, as well as eight Konik horses (Equus ferus caballus) and eight Heck cattle (Bos taurus) with GPS-collars. These data allowed us to perform analyses of space-time interactions. The faecal pellet data showed that red deer did indeed use the fenced pasture and that livestock used the entire extent of the pasture. Further, we verified a neutral space-time interaction between red deer and livestock within the pasture. Thus, there was no indication of a negative effect of the presence of livestock on red deer inside the pasture. One important way in which canteens can contribute to this transformation is by increasing the share of organic and local products. These new political and public demands contrast with the organizational development of canteens over the past few decades, which has mainly been characterized by an increase in economic efficiency and a reduction in costs. Based on a project that was carried out in the Berlin-Brandenburg region (Germany), this paper exemplifies some of the challenges canteens face in the process of introducing organic and local products. Methods The empirical results are based on 31 qualitative interviews with canteen managers and kitchen staff as well as with the processing company involved. In addition, a survey of 500 canteen guests was conducted in the participating canteens. Results The analysis shows that the canteens had to adapt various organizational practices to ensure a healthy and sustainable diet at manageable cost. Introducing local organic beef in the canteens requires close cooperation with local farmers and processors, a change in procurement practices, transparency around the origin of the products, as well as adapted menu planning. Discussion Based on the empirical results, the paper discusses how these challenges can be met and which supportive measures can be taken on different governance levels. To change entrenched practices, process facilitators who support local cooperation along the value added chain are needed, and practical knowledge and professional training must be provided. Here, we reflect on the importance of feralization in the relationship between ongoing urbanization and the worsening biodiversity crisis. Feralization is often viewed as the exact opposite of a domestication process—a perception that we argue is too simplistic. The interrelations between domestication, feralization, and the adaptation of taxa to novel, human-made environments such as cities are complex. Given their unique traits, feral(izing) taxa can play key roles in sustainability, sometimes problematic (i.e., invasive species) but at other times, improving human well-being in urban settings. Abstract Domestication describes a range of changes to wild species as they are increasingly brought under human selection and husbandry. Feralization is the process whereby a species leaves the human sphere and undergoes increasing natural selection in a wild context, which may or may not be geographically adjacent to where the originator wild species evolved prior to domestication. Distinguishing between domestic, feral, and wild species can be difficult, since some populations of so-called "wild species" are at least partly descended from domesticated "populations" (e.g., junglefowl, European wild sheep) and because transitions in both directions are gradual rather than abrupt. In urban settings, prior selection for coexistence with humans provides particular benefit for a domestic organism that undergoes feralization. One risk is that such taxa can become invasive not just at the site of release/escape but far away. As humanity becomes increasingly urban and pristine environments rapidly diminish, we believe that feralized populations also hold conservation value.}, language = {en} } @misc{WenigReppeHorbeltetal.2023, author = {Wenig, Charlett and Reppe, Friedrich and Horbelt, Nils and Spener, Jaromir and Berendt, Ferr{\´e}ol and Cremer, Tobias and Burgert, Ingo and Eder, Michaela}, title = {Adhesives free bark panels: an alternative application for a waste material}, doi = {10.17617/3.AZRWF3}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:kobv:eb1-opus-6118}, year = {2023}, language = {en} } @article{WenigReppeHorbeltetal.2023, author = {Wenig, Charlett and Reppe, Friedrich and Horbelt, Nils and Spener, Jaromir and Berendt, Ferr{\´e}ol and Cremer, Tobias and Frey, Marion and Burgert, Ingo and Eder, Michaela}, title = {Adhesives free bark panels: An alternative application for a waste material}, series = {PloS one}, volume = {18}, journal = {PloS one}, number = {1}, publisher = {Public Library of Science (PLoS)}, doi = {10.1371/journal.pone.0280721}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:kobv:eb1-opus-6104}, year = {2023}, abstract = {The proportion of bark in tree trunks is in the range of ~ 10-20\%. Our motivation for this work was to keep the bark in an almost natural state and explore alternative processes and applications for use. The traditional method of de-barking tree trunks by peeling was used to harvest large bark pieces. Two pieces of peeled bark were placed crosswise, with the rhytidom side (outer bark) facing each other. After different conditioning steps, bark pieces were hot pressed to panels without adding adhesives. Forest fragmentation not only poses a threat to many organisms but also reduces the resistance and resilience of the ecosystem, which is especially relevant to the ongoing climate crisis. The effects of recent extreme heat years on forests in Germany have not been studied in detail for the influence of fragmentation. We investigate the relation of forest fragmentation with temperature and vitality in Germany per ecoregion at the canopy level using satellite imagery at 1-km and 30-m resolution. We differentiated between ecoregions and main forest types. In 2022, larger intact tree-covered areas that are less fragmented have relatively low temperatures on hot days and higher overall vitality. Nearly 98\% of the almost 1.95 million forest fragments at 30-m resolution in Germany are smaller than 1 km2, which cover nearly 30\% of the total forest area. It is essential to accurately estimate and predict SOC levels on a large scale. While spectroscopy through proximal sensing is effective in accurately predicting SOC levels, its limitation in estimating SOC on a large spatial scale is a concern. Hence, there is a need for faster and more cost-effective techniques for quantifying SOC content. Recent research has proposed the use of remote sensing (RS) methods as a potential solution. The main objective of this research was to assess and compare the proximal soil sensing (field spectroscopy measurements) in monitoring and estimating SOC levels with data obtained from spaceborne Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and Sentinel-2A on an agricultural field. To improve the accuracy of the RS methods (UAV and Sentinel-2A) in predicting SOC levels, nine spectral indices were created. The modelling process involved the use of different bands and wavelengths, specifically four bands for UAV and eight for Sentinel-2A. The Roman Catholic Church plays a uniquely important role in this regard due to both the strong moral imperative of the Church to care for the earth, as well as the significant potential impact of the Church on greenhouse gas emissions and local culture. Unfortunately, in the United States, very little work is being done to encourage and support parishes in addressing their contributions to climate change. Using action research and the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Corporate Standard, this research develops a methodology for measuring the carbon footprint of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Minnetonka, Minnesota in the United States of America. A broad scope was developed to encompass not only all Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions but also all Scope 3 emissions that could reasonably be measured in the 6-month research time frame. A combination of local emissions factors, LCA results from the literature, and expenditure-based emissions factors for the United States were used to calculate a final result of 180.20 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions. The top three emissions sources were heating, building maintenance, and electricity usage. These results were used to set priorities and begin developing an action plan for carbon footprint reduction that will be presented to the IHM Finance Council. This unique and thorough examination of an American Catholic parish provides substantial insight into the opportunities and challenges facing parishes in the realm of climate change mitigation. Although there is much room for further research, the methodology and planning guidelines developed can be applied to other Catholic parishes in the region as a guiding document to help them make the first steps towards reducing their carbon footprint.}, subject = {Climate Change}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{WeissLinde2023, author = {Weiss, Fabio and Linde, Andreas}, title = {How precise are size-weight equations for estimating carabid biomass and how could they be improved?}, series = {22. However, measuring insect biomass can be methodologically challenging, and very labour intensive. For many datasets, weight measurements are not available and the original samples may have already been lost. Size-weight equations provide a straightforward method for estimating insect biomass when the insect's body length is known. If insects have been determined to species level one can also use the average body length given in literature. Based on the correlation between the body length and the weight of an insect, there is a variety of size-weight equations for different groups of insects. They are widely used in insect research, but have rarely been tested with independent data. We evaluated two size-weight models for carabid beetles, by Szyszko (1983) and Booij et al. (1994), drawing on previously published independent data by comparing model predictions with actual measurements of biomass, using relative deviation graphs and observed versus predicted from regression. Moreover, we also tested if the inclusion of additional taxonomic parameters, in this case subfamily, can improve results. We found that both models produced systematically biased results: Szyszko´s model gave more accurate results for larger species, while the model of Booij et al. did so for smaller species. This bias is most likely caused by the different origin of the respective training data. This underlines the restricted applicability of such models. We demonstrate that additional taxonomic parameters have the potential to increase the accuracy of size-weight equations and represent a potential solution to the issue of restricted applicability. As actual biomass measurements for carabids are scarce, data availability is limited to only few subfamilies. Until data on more subfamilies become available, we recommend a combined use of both evaluated models: Szyszko's model for carabids ≥ 11.8 mm, and the model of Booij et al. for carabids < 11.8 mm, respectively.}, language = {en} } @misc{MolitorKrahReimannetal.2023, author = {Molitor, Heike and Krah, Jennifer and Reimann, Julian and Bellina, Leonie and Bruns, Antonia}, title = {Zukunftsf{\"a}hige Curricula gestalten - eine Handreichung zur curricularen Verankerung von Hochschulbildung f{\"u}r nachhaltige Entwicklung}, editor = {Krah, Jennifer and Reimann, Julian and Molitor, Heike}, organization = {Arbeitsgemeinschaft f{\"u}r Nachhaltigkeit an Brandenburger Hochschulen}, doi = {10.57741/opus4-388}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:kobv:eb1-opus-3889}, pages = {40}, year = {2023}, abstract = {F{\"u}r die Bew{\"a}ltigung der globalen Herausforderung durch die Gestaltung einer nachhaltigen Entwicklung braucht es die Kompetenzen einer Bildung f{\"u}r nachhaltige Entwicklung (BNE) als Schl{\"u}ssel-Skills f{\"u}r alle relevanten Berufsbilder.
