Correlative Analysis of Surfaces and Nanostructures to Understand their Physics Using AFM and SEM
(2024)
The atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) are two techniques that now have been used for decades to measure and analyse surfaces. This thesis deals with 1st real in-situ correlative microscopy platform that combines both of these techniques. This unique platform through SEM facilitates to measure the inhomogeneous sample surfaces, on which it is difficult to land the cantilever tip at specific region of interests through a conventional optical visualisation at nanometre resolution. This platform eases the nanostructures’ analysis and directly correlating the AFM and SEM measurement data. In this work different samples with diverse characteristics were measured using a variety of AFM measurement modes and through the assistance of SEM. In doing so, the measurement accuracy, precision and possible applications of the correlative microscopy tool were evaluated. (a.) A polymer blend of two polymers was nanomechanically characterised to benchmark the measurement results of the correlative microscope against other commercial standalone AFMs. The benchmarking is crucial for advancing the development of in-situ AFM measurement modes. (b.) A multi-pulse laser ablated stainless steel surface, which was subjected to ultra-short femtosecond laser pulses, was measured via AFM topography imaging to characterise the evolution of surface morphology. This characterisation not only helps to understand the multi-pulse laser ablation, but it also further provides the experimental knowledge and basis to simulate the models for multi-pulse laser ablation. (c.) 3D structures nanoprinted via Focused Electron Beam Induced Deposition (FEBID) were mechanically characterised to assess their structural stiffness and deformation. This sort of evaluation of FEBID structures is to current knowledge the 1st of its kind. While recording force-distance curves, the structural deformation and tip landing on the FEBID structures was observed live via secondary electron imaging using the SEM. It is also a fantastic example demonstrating the power of correlative AFM and SEM measurements. The results are valuable towards the enhancement of FEBID process.
Reality capturing a construction site or enterprise manufacturing hall with a laser scanner results in a digital twin of the environment. Generating a digital twin in regular intervals is useful to plan and manage the facility as well as to check its up-to-date status virtually. Commonly, a mobile scan of the facility takes several hours to accomplish and should take place during non-working hours to decrease the chance of capturing moving objects degrading the scan accuracy. The repeated execution of manual scans is therefore restricted to time slots at night and on weekends and increases the personnel costs.
To overcome the time restrictions and to reduce the personnel cost for repeated scans, an autonomous mobile mapping robot was developed within this thesis. This robot is able to autonomously traverse harsh and changing environments based on a predefined path while scanning and taking 360_ pictures of the surroundings. Therefore, the mobile laser scanner NavVis VLX was mounted on the quadruped robot SPOT from Boston Dynamics. Communication between the robot and the laser scanner enables the simultaneous control of both devices. The user can plan the execution of an autonomous scanning mission with a graphical user interface and the execution itself does not require an operator and is reliably successful. The autonomous scan was proven to have a precise repeatability and coverage of the planned trajectory even with obstacles blocking the original path. In addition, the accuracy of the scan meets the specifications of a classical VLX scan resulting in an accurate representation of the reality.
With the discovery of Tsai‘s Modulus as a fundamental property of composite material and the newly introduced Double-Double Laminate family, new and highly efficient methods for the design of composite laminates are available. An overview of these so-called invariant-based design methods is given. Additionally, two novel approaches are proposed for the invariant-based analysis of stability and displacement of composite panels. These methods are shown to accurately predict the field of displacement and the buckling load for Double-Double type laminates independent of material and laminate thickness. Subsequently, an optimization of layup and thickness of composite panels utilizing these methods is demonstrated. A parametric finite element model is presented, allowing the efficient analysis and optimization of Skin-Grid-Structures. Many different modeling types with varying levels of detail are considered and compared. These include complete solid modeling with layered solid elements as well as combined shell / solid modeling. Additionally, pure shell modeling is considered using pre-integrated shell sections. Both by using a smeared stiffness method and by discreetly assigning stiffness properties. An overview of the theories behind these methods is given. The model is embedded into the Composite Laminate Toolbox for MATLAB, from which the APDL input file is created and executed. A mass optimization of the design parameters is performed with respect to stiffness constraints using the surrogate optimization provided by MATLAB. The optimal solutions are compared to an unstiffened aluminium plate with equivalent stiffness. By direct comparison of the required mass, the immense lightweight potential of the Skin-Grid-Structure is demonstrated.
In many domains of X-ray spectroscopy, such as materials science, bio-imaging and astronomy, large silicon detectors form the heart of the imaging process. Adequate cooling is a prerequisite for an optimum operation. Dark current can thus be minimized, the effects of radiation damage limited, and reverse annealing and thermal runaway avoided [1], [2].
A so-called active interposer (AI), a narrow 76 x 76 mm² silicon cooling plate with an embedded microchannel network designed for large pn-CCDs, which also takes local heat fields into account, is evaluated by equivalent test structures. Unlike the commonly used massive cooling frames, time spent on cool-down and warm-up may being reduced, miss match in coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) limited and thermal paths are shortened [3]–[5]. It also serves as a silicon circuit board (SiCB) allowing a dense integration into a tiled-like, large-scale focal plane arrangement with little inactive area.
The equivalent test structure was monitored and supplied with coolant by a high-pressure pump in a vacuum chamber. An analytical as well as a CFD model in ANSYS-Fluent were created to verify, compare, and thoroughly investigate the thermal and hydrodynamic parameters. First tests have shown that temperature gradients below 4°C can be achieved at a power dissipation of 22 watts, with an average temperature increase of 7.5 degrees Celsius at Reynolds numbers below 750. Initial conclusions about the microchannel cooling (MCC) capacity could be drawn and the dependence between temperature gradients and flow rates has been verified.
Last but not least, the experiments have provided first indication that an active interposer and the associated supply system are feasible, paving the way for further steps to increase practicality and functionality in cooling of large semiconductor detectors.
Microacoustic radio frequency filters are essential electronic components for all devices using wireless communication. For miniaturization and cost reduction it is necessary to further reduce the area for the electrical contacts on the chip. CPB (copper pillar bump) interconnections on radio frequency filters can release valuable chip design area of up to 26 % compared to standard SB (solder bump) interconnections on a Qualcomm TFAP (Thin Film Acoustic Package). We developed a process to deposit CPB interconnections on microacoustic radio frequency filters. A 1.20 mm × 1.60 mm SAW (surface acoustic wave) LTE (Long Term Evolution) band 26 duplexer with a height of 0.20 mm including the CPB interconnections was investigated. Unbiased highly accelerated stress test, damp heat steady state, dry heat, and temperature cycling reliability tests have shown that the new interconnection technology fulfills the reliability requirements of the smart device industry. Two failure modes caused by extended temperature cycling were identified via scanning acoustic microscopy and scanning electron microscopy analyses on cross sections.
In this paper a new method for sensitivity recalibration of capacitive MEMS microphones is presented. Recalibration can be applied to compensate ageing or environmental influences. Recalibration can be done by measuring the sensitivity for only one bias voltage after a stress test. A microphone with a variable bias voltage can measure its pull-in voltage. Unfortunately, the drift of the pull-in voltage does not correlate with the sensitivity drift. So a true self-calibration without a defined acoustical test signal was impossible.
In this paper we present a systematic method to determine sets of close to optimal sensor calibration points for a polynomial approximation.
For each set of calibration points a polynomial is used to fit the nonlinear sensor response to the calibration reference. The polynomial parameters are calculated using ordinary least square fit. To determine the quality of each calibration, reference sensor data is measured at discrete test conditions. As an error indicator for the quality of a calibration the root mean square deviation between the calibration polynomial and the reference measurement is calculated. The calibration polynomials and the error indicators are calculated for all possible calibration point sets. To find close to optimal calibration point sets, the worst 99% of the calibration options are dismissed. This results in a multi-dimensional probability distribution of the probably best calibration point sets.
In an experiment, barometric MEMS (micro-electromechanical systems) pressure sensors are calibrated using the proposed calibration method at several temperatures and pressures. The framework is applied to a batch of six of each of the following sensor types: Bosch BMP085, Bosch BMP180, and EPCOS T5400. Results indicate which set of calibration points should be chosen to achieve good calibration results.
This paper describes a novel method for trimming a low noise, differential micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) microphone with a state of the art signal to noise ratio (SNR) of 66 dB(A) and a sensitivity of -38 dBV/Pa @ 1 kHz after completing the fabrication process. The method allows compensating the electroacoustic variations caused by process tolerances and reducing specification limits of the microphone sensitivity from ±3 dB to ±0.5 dB. Trimming is done by programming the bias supply voltage of the capacitive membrane-backplate-system and the gain factor of the output pre-amplifier. Microphone sensitivity can be modified within a range of 11.2 dB. Thus the standard deviation of the sensitivity of a production batch could be reduced from 0.97 dB to 0.11 dB. Furthermore the SNR could be increased to 66.5 dB(A).
Barometric MEMS pressure sensors must be calibrated at several temperatures and pressures. The fewer calibration points are needed to fulfill a sensor specification, the faster sensor production is. This paper proposes a polynomial approach for determining optimal sensor calibration, using the minimum number of calibration points necessary. In an experiment the framework is applied to the following sensor types: Bosch BMP085, Bosch BMP180, and EPCOS T5400. Influences of temperature operation range and pressure range are discussed in the experiment. Further, optimal calibration point suggestions are identified.
A new iterative matrix algorithm has been applied to improve the precision of temperature and force decoupling in multi-parameter FBG sensing. For the first time, this evaluation technique allows the integration of nonlinearities in the sensor’s temperature characteristic and the temperature dependence of the sensor’s force sensitivity. Applied to a sensor cable consisting of two FBGs in fibers with 80 μm and 125 μm cladding diameter installed in a 7 m-long coiled PEEK capillary, this technique significantly reduced the uncertainties in friction-compensated temperature measurements. In the presence of high friction-induced forces of up to 1.6 N the uncertainties in temperature evaluation were reduced from several degrees Celsius if using a standard linear matrix approach to less than 0.5°C if using the iterative matrix approach in an extended temperature range between −35°C and 125°C.
The thesis aimed to clarify whether there are differences in the technical acceptance of students from Germany and Japan. If applicable, the thesis pointed out possible reasons for differences. To achieve this, it was necessary to conduct research in existing literature. A literature review also led to a model capable of observing the level of technical acceptance and factors connected to acceptance. While the effectivity of the model could not be completely confirmed, it became the basis for an online survey. The survey was distributed to students in Germany (mainly Munich) and Japan (mainly Tokyo) and accessible for about three weeks. The survey investigated the stance of the students towards the topics virtual reality, robotics and alternative means of payment. No strong, general correlation between the nationality of the students and their rate of technical acceptance was found. The results indicated differences for some items of robotics and alternative means of payment, but due to a small number of participants, the significance of the indications is low and requires a more thorough investigation on a bigger scale.
MEMS microphones must be further miniaturized for use in mobile devices. So we developed packaging technologies for MEMS microphones using flip chip technology instead of wire bonding. The first two generations have the sound hole in a ceramic interposer at the bottom side of the package. Now a new flip chip microphone package with the sound hole on the top side has been developed. The new package technology combines a large acoustic reference volume for good signal to noise ratio with small size. Compared to other microphone packages the sensitivity is improved by 3 dB. The front volume is small to avoid resonances in the acoustic frequency range.
The AEgIS collaboration (Antimatter Experiment: Gravity, Interferometry, Spectroscopy) at CERN has assigned itself the goal of directly measuring Earth's gravitational force on antimatter with a precision of 1% for the first time. Neutral antihydrogen atoms enable this measurement and are produced using the highly efficient charge exchange reaction of cold antiproton plasma with laser excited Rydberg-positronium. These atoms are then transported by Stark-acceleration towards a Moiré deflectometer which detects the displacement of the antihydrogen beam caused by gravity.
This Master's thesis is based on AEgIS' goal and focuses on the positron system which is an essential component of the overall experiment. Two main objectives are dealt with. Firstly, the systematical optimization of the positron apparatus consisting of a source, two Surko-type buffer gas Penning-Malmberg traps with rotating walls and a transfer line to the AEgIS antihydrogen apparatus or to a test chamber for sample examination. Secondly, two positron/positronium converter targets are investigated for the first time at AEGIS using single-shot positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy. Regarding the first objective, a large enhancement of the total positron yield (ten times higher) is achieved which results in a higher positronium output and thus satisfies the needs of a high antihydrogen yield. This is realized by applying horizontal and vertical magnetic correction fields in one of the traps; optimizing the frequency and amplitude of the rotating wall; shielding critical parts with µ-metal sheets from environmental magnetic fields and by adjusting the potentials in the traps and the transfer line. After this, a positron bunch with 20 ns time-spread containing up to 5.7 · 107 positrons within a reasonable accumulation time of ten minutes can be provided for further measurements. The two investigated converter targets for the positronium production are an aerogel target from NASA and a nanochannel converter produced by the University of Trento. The annihilation radiation of the incident positron bunch is detected with a PbF2- Cherenkov detector which shows a slow decreasing signal for tens of nanoseconds for both targets which proves the emission of positronium. The nanochannel converter is slightly more effective and has a positronium lifetime of (90 ± 2) ns, whereas the yield with the aerogel target is smaller and only a lifetime of (59 ± 2) ns is found. These results indicate that the nanochannel converter is best suited for AEgIS but also that additional and more precise measurements will help to improve the positronium yield in the future.
Designing mechanical structures exposed to random vibration loading compromises the central challenges of defining comprehensive load assumptions and of processing these efficiently in a fatigue assessment. For this matter of statistical load description, frequency-domain methods withhold major advantages. They describe random vibration loading by its power spectral density, which allows drastic data reduction, to conduct efficient response analyses and to derive a statistical description of resulting load spectra. Nevertheless, this procedure is limited to stationary Gaussian loading. Thus, this paper proposes an extension of the frequency-domain approach to a special class of non-stationary loading – amplitude-modulated processes. These consist of a unique vibration state that varies in intensity, which is represented by a modulating signal. This paper develops a methodology to test for amplitude-modulated processes, to derive efficient measures for the intensity variation and to include this behavior in a fatigue assessment carried out in frequency-domain. The full methodology is presented via a set of simulated data.

In forest ecology, a snag refers to a standing, partly or completely dead tree, often missing a top or most of the smaller branches. The accurate estimation of live and dead biomass in forested ecosystems is important for studies of carbon dynamics, biodiversity, and forest management. Therefore, an understanding of its availability and spatial distribution is required. So far, LiDAR remote sensing has been successfully used to assess live trees and their biomass, but studies focusing on dead trees are rare. The paper develops a methodology for retrieving individual dead trees in a mixed mountain forest using features that are derived from small-footprint airborne full waveform LIDAR data. First, 3D coordinates of the laser beam reflections, the pulse intensity and width are extracted by waveform decomposition. Secondly, 3D single trees are detected by an integrated approach, which delineates both dominate tree crowns and understory small trees in the canopy height model (CHM) using the watershed algorithm followed by applying normalized cuts segmentation to merged watershed areas. Thus, single trees can be obtained as 3D point segments associated with waveform-specific features per point. Furthermore, the tree segments are delivered to feature definition process to derive geometric and reflectional features at single tree level, e.g. volume and maximal diameter of crown, mean intensity, gap fraction, etc. Finally, the spanned feature space for the tree segments is forwarded to a binary classifier using support vector machine (SVM) in order to discriminate dead trees from the living ones. The methodology is applied to datasets that have been captured with the Riegl LMSQ560 laser scanner at a point density of 25 points/m2 in the Bavarian Forest National Park, Germany, respectively under leaf-on and leaf-off conditions for Norway spruces, European beeches and Sycamore maples. The classification experiments lead in the best case to an overall accuracy of 73% in a leaf-on situation and 71% in a leaf-off situation, if we assess the classification results using 5-fold cross-validation method with the help of reference data acquired by the field surveying.
In this paper, we present an integrated strategy to comprehensively evaluate the feature relevance of point cloud and image data for classification of trees and vehicles in urban scenes. First of all, point cloud and image data are co-registered by backprojection with available orientation parameters if necessary. After that, all data points are grid-fitted into the raster format in order to facilitate acquiring spatial context information per pixel/point. Then, various spatial-statistical and radiometric features can be extracted using a cylindrical volume neighborhood. Classification results as labeled pixels can be acquired from the classifier, and after appropriate refinements we obtain the objects of trees and vehicles. Compared to other methods which have assessed the classification and relevance simultaneously using a single classifier, we first introduce AdaBoost classifier combined with contribution ratio to provide both classification results and measures of feature relevance, and then utilize Random Forest classifier to evaluate and compare the feature relevance from a more independent viewpoint. In order to confirm the accuracy and reliability of classification and feature relevance results, we consider not only characteristics of the classifiers itself, but also errors of data co-registration and alterable parameters. We apply the procedure to two different datasets. In the dataset requiring co-registration a-priori, the AdaBoost classifier even achieves a great accuracy of 96.99% for trees and 83.45% for vehicles. The quantitative results of feature relevance assessment highlight the most important features for classification of tree covers and vehicles, such as NDVI, LiDAR intensity, planarity and entropy. By comparative analysis of the two independent approaches, the reliable and consistent feature selection for classification of trees and vehicles from LiDAR and image data could be validated and achieved, being unrelated to the classifiers.
Although head injuries in football having approximately the same incidence as in American football and ice hockey, head protectors are barely used for prophylaxis. A detailed human head-neck model including force elements describing the material behaviour of human soft tissue structures such as ligaments, tendons, cartilage layers, intervertebral discs and muscles has been developed using multi-body system (MBS) modelling techniques to investigate the effectiveness of commercial headgear. For ball-head impacts at ball velocity of about v = 20 m/s the simulations calculate a Head Impact Power (HIP) index of 4.1 kW resulting in a five percent injury risk for concussion. When using headgear the resulting HIP-value comes to 3.91 kW meaning that the reduction of the injury risk is very small.

Heat pumps offer a great opportunity of heating buildings on renewable energy sources. A small, cost-efficient and environment-friendly implementation are ammoniawater absorption heat pumps. One of its critical components in terms of efficiency, size and cost is the absorber. In this thesis the physical processes inside an ammoniawater spray absorber chamber were analyzed, modeled and simulated with the objective of optimizing the absorber efficiency by determining the influence of spray and nozzle properties on the absorption process. Effects of drop diameter and velocity were estimated analytically by simple approximations and by calculations in LibreOffice spreadsheets. The joint distribution of drop diameter velocity in a spray produced by a certain nozzle was modeled using both empirical equations and abinitio methods like the maximum entropy formalism (MEF) by the current state of scientific and engineering knowledge. The model of a swirl nozzle thus obtained was implemented in C++ as a part of an OpenFOAM solver. Using an existing, specifically built absorption library, the author was provided with, several simulations were conducted varying the absorption chamber geometries and the nozzle types. The results of these simulation showed that the heat transfer from the drops to the ammonia vapor atmosphere in the absorption chamber and subsequently from the chamber atmosphere to the chamber walls is the crucial parameter determining the absorption rate and the final ammonia concentration. In literature, several approaches can be found to determine the absorption rate of a single, representative drop in a spray, either by analytical or numerical methods. However, so far no study considered the effects of the whole spray consisting of a huge number of drops with varying size and velocity. By the model and setup developed in this work, effects like heating up of the absorber chamber or flow induced by momentum transfer from the drops to the fluid, can be taken into account for the first time.
This work has shown that the number of local defects (craters) beyond certain limit values correlates very well with the number of missing dots, and therefore the surface topography of the paper has definitely the greatest impact on printability in rotogravure. The deepenings have an average depth of 2-5 μm and diameters between 50-250 μm. When ESA is used bigger craters as regards depth and diameter are necessary to cause missing dots. However, not all missing dots can be explained and described by means of surface topography. Non-topographic factors,
such as electric properties of papers (especially when using the ESA), fibre and filler distribution, ink absorbency or microscopic compressibility can also have an influence on printability as regards missing dots. Paper independent factors (e.g. printing ink or printing machine) may also have a certain influence on missing dots.
