Correlative Analysis of Surfaces and Nanostructures to Understand their Physics Using AFM and SEM
(2024)
The atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) are two techniques that now have been used for decades to measure and analyse surfaces. This thesis deals with 1st real in-situ correlative microscopy platform that combines both of these techniques. This unique platform through SEM facilitates to measure the inhomogeneous sample surfaces, on which it is difficult to land the cantilever tip at specific region of interests through a conventional optical visualisation at nanometre resolution. This platform eases the nanostructures’ analysis and directly correlating the AFM and SEM measurement data. In this work different samples with diverse characteristics were measured using a variety of AFM measurement modes and through the assistance of SEM. In doing so, the measurement accuracy, precision and possible applications of the correlative microscopy tool were evaluated. (a.) A polymer blend of two polymers was nanomechanically characterised to benchmark the measurement results of the correlative microscope against other commercial standalone AFMs. The benchmarking is crucial for advancing the development of in-situ AFM measurement modes. (b.) A multi-pulse laser ablated stainless steel surface, which was subjected to ultra-short femtosecond laser pulses, was measured via AFM topography imaging to characterise the evolution of surface morphology. This characterisation not only helps to understand the multi-pulse laser ablation, but it also further provides the experimental knowledge and basis to simulate the models for multi-pulse laser ablation. (c.) 3D structures nanoprinted via Focused Electron Beam Induced Deposition (FEBID) were mechanically characterised to assess their structural stiffness and deformation. This sort of evaluation of FEBID structures is to current knowledge the 1st of its kind. While recording force-distance curves, the structural deformation and tip landing on the FEBID structures was observed live via secondary electron imaging using the SEM. It is also a fantastic example demonstrating the power of correlative AFM and SEM measurements. The results are valuable towards the enhancement of FEBID process.
Reality capturing a construction site or enterprise manufacturing hall with a laser scanner results in a digital twin of the environment. Generating a digital twin in regular intervals is useful to plan and manage the facility as well as to check its up-to-date status virtually. Commonly, a mobile scan of the facility takes several hours to accomplish and should take place during non-working hours to decrease the chance of capturing moving objects degrading the scan accuracy. The repeated execution of manual scans is therefore restricted to time slots at night and on weekends and increases the personnel costs.
To overcome the time restrictions and to reduce the personnel cost for repeated scans, an autonomous mobile mapping robot was developed within this thesis. This robot is able to autonomously traverse harsh and changing environments based on a predefined path while scanning and taking 360_ pictures of the surroundings. Therefore, the mobile laser scanner NavVis VLX was mounted on the quadruped robot SPOT from Boston Dynamics. Communication between the robot and the laser scanner enables the simultaneous control of both devices. The user can plan the execution of an autonomous scanning mission with a graphical user interface and the execution itself does not require an operator and is reliably successful. The autonomous scan was proven to have a precise repeatability and coverage of the planned trajectory even with obstacles blocking the original path. In addition, the accuracy of the scan meets the specifications of a classical VLX scan resulting in an accurate representation of the reality.
With the discovery of Tsai‘s Modulus as a fundamental property of composite material and the newly introduced Double-Double Laminate family, new and highly efficient methods for the design of composite laminates are available. An overview of these so-called invariant-based design methods is given. Additionally, two novel approaches are proposed for the invariant-based analysis of stability and displacement of composite panels. These methods are shown to accurately predict the field of displacement and the buckling load for Double-Double type laminates independent of material and laminate thickness. Subsequently, an optimization of layup and thickness of composite panels utilizing these methods is demonstrated. A parametric finite element model is presented, allowing the efficient analysis and optimization of Skin-Grid-Structures. Many different modeling types with varying levels of detail are considered and compared. These include complete solid modeling with layered solid elements as well as combined shell / solid modeling. Additionally, pure shell modeling is considered using pre-integrated shell sections. Both by using a smeared stiffness method and by discreetly assigning stiffness properties. An overview of the theories behind these methods is given. The model is embedded into the Composite Laminate Toolbox for MATLAB, from which the APDL input file is created and executed. A mass optimization of the design parameters is performed with respect to stiffness constraints using the surrogate optimization provided by MATLAB. The optimal solutions are compared to an unstiffened aluminium plate with equivalent stiffness. By direct comparison of the required mass, the immense lightweight potential of the Skin-Grid-Structure is demonstrated.
In many domains of X-ray spectroscopy, such as materials science, bio-imaging and astronomy, large silicon detectors form the heart of the imaging process. Adequate cooling is a prerequisite for an optimum operation. Dark current can thus be minimized, the effects of radiation damage limited, and reverse annealing and thermal runaway avoided [1], [2].
A so-called active interposer (AI), a narrow 76 x 76 mm² silicon cooling plate with an embedded microchannel network designed for large pn-CCDs, which also takes local heat fields into account, is evaluated by equivalent test structures. Unlike the commonly used massive cooling frames, time spent on cool-down and warm-up may being reduced, miss match in coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) limited and thermal paths are shortened [3]–[5]. It also serves as a silicon circuit board (SiCB) allowing a dense integration into a tiled-like, large-scale focal plane arrangement with little inactive area.
The equivalent test structure was monitored and supplied with coolant by a high-pressure pump in a vacuum chamber. An analytical as well as a CFD model in ANSYS-Fluent were created to verify, compare, and thoroughly investigate the thermal and hydrodynamic parameters. First tests have shown that temperature gradients below 4°C can be achieved at a power dissipation of 22 watts, with an average temperature increase of 7.5 degrees Celsius at Reynolds numbers below 750. Initial conclusions about the microchannel cooling (MCC) capacity could be drawn and the dependence between temperature gradients and flow rates has been verified.
Last but not least, the experiments have provided first indication that an active interposer and the associated supply system are feasible, paving the way for further steps to increase practicality and functionality in cooling of large semiconductor detectors.
Microacoustic radio frequency filters are essential electronic components for all devices using wireless communication. For miniaturization and cost reduction it is necessary to further reduce the area for the electrical contacts on the chip. CPB (copper pillar bump) interconnections on radio frequency filters can release valuable chip design area of up to 26 % compared to standard SB (solder bump) interconnections on a Qualcomm TFAP (Thin Film Acoustic Package). We developed a process to deposit CPB interconnections on microacoustic radio frequency filters. A 1.20 mm × 1.60 mm SAW (surface acoustic wave) LTE (Long Term Evolution) band 26 duplexer with a height of 0.20 mm including the CPB interconnections was investigated. Unbiased highly accelerated stress test, damp heat steady state, dry heat, and temperature cycling reliability tests have shown that the new interconnection technology fulfills the reliability requirements of the smart device industry. Two failure modes caused by extended temperature cycling were identified via scanning acoustic microscopy and scanning electron microscopy analyses on cross sections.
