Invariant based optimization of a CFRP wing box
- This thesis covers the optimization of skins of a vertical stabilizer of an aircraft fighter made from CFRP. A new invariant method is applied to optimize the laminate design considering so-called double double laminates [±ϕ;±ψ]. This method is implemented in the DD-Design Tool (DiCaprio, Riccio, and Tsai 2020) which has been improved and implemented in Python within the scope of this thesis. The new tool has been proven as computationally efficient for optimizing laminated structures and the obtained results show great weight savings for skins made of double double laminates, compared to legacy quad laminates or aluminum constructions. Due to the partial low loading resulting in thin laminates with a thickness of one building block, two design strategies were defined and investigated for their effects on weight: 1st Symmetry Design Approach, 2nd Homogenization. Design Approach, both applied to the digitized optimization results. It is shown that the Symmetry Design Approach yields a significantly lower weight than homogenization for the studied model and all considered failure criteria. In addition, the achieved skin weights for first ply failure are compared with skin weights corresponding to last ply failure, where weight reductions of 28% and 35% are obtained for Tsai-Wu and unit circle, respectively.
