Among the possible traffic members on a Vehicle-to-Everything network, the term Vulnerable Road User (VRU) is assigned e.g. to pedestrians and cyclists. The VRU Awareness Message (VAM) is used by VRUs to inform other users of their presence and ensure they are perceived in a traffic system. Since the number of VRUs in crowded areas might be very high, the over-the-air traffic might be overloaded. To reduce channel overload, VAMs offer a clustering feature in which VRUs with similar kinematics and positions can group themselves so that only one device transmits messages. The VRU Basic Service specification describes the cluster as a bounding box that must cover all its members using a geometric shape so that other vehicles in the vicinity can avoid colliding with the contained VRUs. This paper contributes to the standardization effort by introducing a data structure, the Cluster Map, for the clustering in the VRU Basic Service. Furthermore, this work is the first to suggest strategies for forming bounding box shapes. Simulation results show that each of the geometry types is useful in different situations, thus further research on the topic is advised.

AI has recently become a huge topic in many domains, including the healthcare environment. In radiology physicians have to make many decisions every day, analyzing medical images and choosing the right treatments for each individual patient. In order to help them with this workload there has been a lot of development to create AI based recommender systems that will assist the medical professionals. But with promising advancements also comes great responsibility and new challenges. In the following I try to assess how the use of AI in medical decision making might impact the trust of the physicians in such tools. My central research question is in how far AI-based medical decision support systems impact physicians, if for example certain factors make them more or less likely to trust the AI and heed its advice. Responsibly and properly integrating AI in medical processes is a task that needs to be taken seriously. Moral and ethical aspects of developments in this area should be taken into consideration to ensure the safe use of AI.
The aim of this thesis will be to identify and assess factors that might influence physicians’ trust when using AI-based decision support systems. Since AI is rather new in this area it is not clear yet which factors of using AI decision support systems might change the trust that physicians have in these systems. But we can only work with these changes and influences if we are aware of them. Upon identifying them there is a need to investigate in what way they influence physicians. Once this is clear the next step will be to find out how these influences can be avoided or mitigated in order to ensure a beneficial use of AI in medical decision making.
This thesis will be based on already published academic papers. The combined knowledge and insights of these papers will be compared, critically reviewed and combined to come to new conclusions.
This bachelor’s thesis explores the integration of visual and text-based models for predicting American football plays based on National Football League (NFL) games. The study focuses on automatically extracting visual features from pre-snap images of NFL plays and combining them with a text-based model trained on historical play-by-play data. The visual features are extracted using computer vision techniques and YOLOv8 model architecture, while the text-based model utilizes an XGBoost model to analyze historical play-by-play data.
The research methodology involves preprocessing and analyzing a dataset of NFL pre-snap images and historical play-by-play data. Computer vision algorithms, such as Optical Character Recognition or Line Extraction are employed to extract relevant visual features, such as player positions, formations, and field dynamics, from the images. Simultaneously, an XGBoost model is trained on historical play-by-play descriptions to capture textual patterns associated with different play outcomes, such as pass or run.
The extracted visual features and text-based predictions are then integrated into a unified prediction pipeline. The effectiveness of the integrated model is evaluated through extensive experimentation and performance analysis. Various metrics, including accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score, are used to assess the predictive capabilities of the model.
The results demonstrate the potential of combining visual and text-based information for accurate prediction of NFL plays. The integrated model achieves promising performance in predicting pass or run plays with a test accuracy of 74.13% and validation accuracy of 73.78%. The findings of this research contribute to the advancement of predictive analytics in sports and provide valuable insights for coaches, analysts, and the football and data science community.
On the influence of explainable AI and time pressure on confirmation bias in digital pathology
(2024)
The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) in recent years has opened the door to its employment for life-saving applications in the medical field. In particular, the increasing prevalence of AI in diagnostic pathology holds the potential to enhance diagnostic accuracy and provide more efficient patient care. While explainability is often identified as a crucial component in terms of safety and AI acceptance for future clinical use, it may also introduce or strengthen human cognitive biases such as the confirmation bias.
Confirmation Bias describes the selective search for and intake of information to strengthen prior existing beliefs, which could be further amplified by the time pressure ubiquitously present in everyday pathology. To date, very few user-centric studies have been carried out in this domain, thus this thesis seeks to empirically examine the effects of explainable AI and time pressure on confirmation bias during the interaction with clinical decision support systems in a mixed-method study and aims to contribute to the safe and efficient development and design of intelligent support systems in the medical sector.

This thesis addresses usability issues arising from unclear information and cluttered interfaces in existing webapp of Livello Kiosk’s Webapp. Through user research, competitor analysis, iterative redesign and AB Testing, the aim of this study is improving the User Experience of the entire purchasing process for Livello's Smart Kiosk system.
By understanding user needs and learning from competitor successes and failures, interviews, and surveys from real users, drawing insights from their feedback, the redesigned interface will prioritize clarity, ease of use, and intuitive navigation.
This research has the potential to contribute valuable insights for the development of user-centered and intuitive interfaces for Kiosk Webapp (KWA). Ultimately, it will be enhancing customer satisfaction, reduce frustration and increase task completion rates.
Currently, a significant gap exists between academic and industrial research in automated driving development. Despite this, there is common sense that cooperative control approaches in automated vehicles will surpass the previously favored takeover paradigm in most driving situations due to enhanced driving performance and user experience. Yet, the application of these concepts in real driving situations remains unclear, and a holistic approach to driving cooperation is missing. Existing research has primarily focused on testing specific interaction scenarios and implementations. To address this gap and offer a contemporary perspective on designing human–vehicle cooperation in automated driving, we have developed a three-part taxonomy with the help of an extensive literature review. The taxonomy broadens the notion of driving cooperation towards a holistic and application-oriented view by encompassing (1) the “Cooperation Use Case”, (2) the “Cooperation Frame”, and (3) the “Human–Machine Interface”. We validate the taxonomy by categorizing related literature and providing a detailed analysis of an exemplar paper. The proposed taxonomy offers designers and researchers a concise overview of the current state of driver cooperation and insights for future work. Further, the taxonomy can guide automotive HMI designers in ideation, communication, comparison, and reflection of cooperative driving interfaces.
Real-time rendering of real world terrain states a popular field of research of the recent decades. Real world terrain is represented by highly detailed data sets. Therefore, it is crucial to use methods and algorithms that create simplified terrain meshes out of this data. As a result, steadily new approaches and techniques are developed, to render terrain efficiently with a high degree of detail, while trying to use the most of the current hardware’s performance.
The goal of this thesis is to develop an off-screen terrain renderer using Vulkan as graphics API and real world data sets, as height maps and satellite images. Additionally, the developed terrain render is supposed to be executed on selected embedded devices, while still delivering high framerates.
In order to achieve this goal, necessary basic terminology and concepts of terrain rendering are dealt with. An important part of these concepts are performance optimizations, as level of detail and culling methods.
Furthermore, Vulkan as graphics API will be introduced and compared with its predecessor OpenGL. For a technical understanding of Vulkan it is crucial to look at its render pipeline and basic rendering concepts.
After several rendering methods are analyzed, based on them the design of this thesis’s renderer is examined, while the most important parts of its implementation are looked at closer by analyzing their code snippets.
The main part of this thesis is completed, by analyzing benchmarks of different scenarios to see how the developed terrain render behaves in different situations. These benchmarks include the frames per second, and statistics of the device’s hardware components, as CPU load, GPU load, memory usage and memory throughput.
The thesis ends, with a summary and general conclusion of the work. Possible future work includes optimizing the usage of embedded devices’ unified memory, testing of texture compression methods for an optimized memory usage or a comparison of an OpenGL version of the developed renderer by comparing benchmark results of the same scenarios.
This thesis examines the ethical and societal implications of generative AI models, focusing on their associated risks, but also exploring the potential benefits. It synthesizes existing research to outline the primary concerns and opportunities that generative AI presents, with an emphasis on the need for its responsible development and deployment. The analysis includes an exploration of the increasing difficulty in distinguishing between AI-generated and human-created content, highlighting advancements in AI that challenge current notions of authenticity and trust.
The work further discusses a variety of broader societal changes and risks that may emerge with generative AI, advocating for the necessity of regulatory interventions to mitigate potential negative outcomes. It assesses and critically investigates the current regulatory landscape and potential regulation strategies, noting the lack of comprehensive and mandatory frameworks to address the implications of generative AI adequately.
The critical role of collaborative efforts among stakeholders in navigating the ethical landscape of generative AI is highlighted. It concludes that addressing the examined challenges requires a multidisciplinary approach, integrating insights from an array of fields, including technology, ethics, and policy to ensure that generative AI advances in a way that aligns with societal values and norms.

If we, as user experience designers, want to create truly user-centered experiences, we need to understand not only what people want, but what they need and how they behave. Human behavior, however, also results from the choices people make every day. The same applies to the development and design of automated transportation. To achieve and maintain these goals, we need to accept that human decisions are not only made on a rational level, but rather on the basis of mental shortcuts, which may be efficient, but can also lead to cognitive biases and thus to sub-optimal results.
This master’s thesis specifically sheds light on four cognitive biases - truthiness, illusion of control, action bias and automation bias -, their existence in automated driving, as well as their relationship to each other and possible influencing factors. As part of a preliminary study (n=117), which was implemented as an online questionnaire, the existence of the cognitive biases in focus of this work is examined in more detail and initial findings of visualizations and explanations as an influencing factor are collected. In the further course, a user study (n=34) was completed to build on the knowledge gained and examine the accuracy of the mental model of the occupants of an automated ride and their individual personality traits as further influential parameters. This work should serve as a cornerstone to include cognitive biases and their influencing forces in the development of automated vehicles in the future and to use the knowledge gathered to integrate psychological aspects that affect every human being into user-centered humanmachine interactions.
Accurate and comprehensive semantic segmentation of Bird's Eye View (BEV) is essential for ensuring safe and proactive navigation in autonomous driving. Although cooperative perception has exceeded the detection capabilities of single-agent systems, prevalent camera-based algorithms in cooperative perception neglect valuable information derived from historical observations. This limitation becomes critical during sensor failures or communication issues as cooperative perception reverts to single-agent perception, leading to degraded performance and incomplete BEV segmentation maps. This paper introduces TempCoBEV, a temporal module designed to incorporate historical cues into current observations, thereby improving the quality and reliability of BEV map segmentations. We propose an importance-guided attention architecture to effectively integrate temporal information that prioritizes relevant properties for BEV map segmentation. TempCoBEV is an independent temporal module that seamlessly integrates into state-of-the-art camera-based cooperative perception models. We demonstrate through extensive experiments on the OPV2V dataset that TempCoBEV performs better than non-temporal models in predicting current and future BEV map segmentations, particularly in scenarios involving communication failures. We show the efficacy of TempCoBEV and its capability to integrate historical cues into the current BEV map, improving predictions under optimal communication conditions by up to 2% and under communication failures by up to 19%. The code will be published on GitHub.

Numerous prognostic factors are currently assessed histopathologically in biopsies of canine mast cell tumors to evaluate clinical behavior. In addition, PCR analysis of the c-Kit exon 11 mutational status is often performed to evaluate the potential success of a tyrosine kinase inhibitor therapy. This project aimed at training deep learning models (DLMs) to identify the c-Kit-11 mutational status of MCTs solely based on morphology without additional molecular analysis. HE slides of 195 mutated and 173 non-mutated tumors were stained consecutively in two different laboratories and scanned with three different slide scanners. This resulted in six different datasets (stain-scanner variations) of whole slide images. DLMs were trained with single and mixed datasets and their performances was assessed under scanner and staining domain shifts. The DLMs correctly classified HE slides according to their c-Kit 11 mutation status in, on average, 87% of cases for the best-suited stain-scanner variant. A relevant performance drop could be observed when the stain-scanner combination of the training and test dataset differed. Multi-variant datasets improved the average accuracy but did not reach the maximum accuracy of algorithms trained and tested on the same stain-scanner variant. In summary, DLM-assisted morphological examination of MCTs can predict c-Kit-exon 11 mutational status of MCTs with high accuracy. However, the recognition performance is impeded by a change of scanner or staining protocol. Larger data sets with higher numbers of scans originating from different laboratories and scanners may lead to more robust DLMs to identify c-Kit mutations in HE slides.
Virtual Reality (VR) has emerged as a promising and effective tool for education. The serenity of nature and the underlying Biophilic design theory promise positive effects on learning by influencing attention, well-being and immersion in advanced technology. However, the specifics of how and under what contexts learning is most effective in VR with a focus on the abstraction level remains to be elucidated. This study aims to determine how radically different virtual environments (VE) - natural vs. abstract - design approaches affect learning and attention and the underlying interplay of these two constructs with attention, comfort, presence, and immersion. A mixed-method design with a comparative exploratory approach within subjects was adopted to explore the influence of different VR settings, one being natural and one being abstractly designed without elements. The study emphasizes the crucial role of interaction between presence and attention in VE design. However, while there were no significant quantitative differences regarding this data set, naturalistic VR environments significantly influenced learning effectiveness and attention spans according to qualitative data about the same result. Also, biophilic elements facilitate emotional comfort while considering user comfort and engagement during thematic analysis. It is also evident that quantitative measuring within Immersion and Presence effects reveal slight trends towards natural VE, while qualitative data favored the abstract VE, which raises the question of sensitivity on the MPS Questionnaire and incorporating and elevating the perspective of Acceptance of Virtual Reality Environments to be more sensitive and valid. Our research confirms VR’s potential in education and highlights that traditional classroom elements should blend with VR capabilities (educational VR spaces should augment, not replace, conventional methods). The broader explorative approach revealed potential gaps in VR research, new perspectives on abstraction levels, and the impact on VR learning.
The goal of this thesis is to provide a guide that can be used by software developers that wants to include Rust into an existing C++ application.
After a brief summary of the languages, both the basics of integrating Rust code into C++ applications and the reverse way are presented to set a common base of knowledge. Additionally, a few tools and libraries are introduced, namely bindgen, cbindgen, cxx, and the cc crate. As they are being used in the following guide, the toolsets CMake and CMakeRust are presented and explained in more detail to make it easier for developers to include and use them in their own projects.
The guide is separated into three steps which help to identify the required interfaces, implement them and eventually include everything into the C++ compilation process.
Apart from more advanced types based on pointers, the integration is fairly easy and straight-forward. Using structs and their implemented methods, Rust is able to replicate a class structure that is typical for object-oriented C++. After providing the required binding files, the Rust component can easily be called from C++ code like any other function. While external Rust methods need to be called using a function(Object) syntax, they can be also be converted and used via the standard Object.function() syntax by implementing wrapper classes that translate the calls. These can then be included in more complex C++ architectures like inheritance structures. The usage of the aforementioned advanced types, which are based on pointers, is not covered in this thesis, though the cxx library can be used for those.
The compilation for and usage on embedded targets is also possible with its required effort depending on the target architecture. If the necessary target is not officially supported yet, some additional things like the standard library need to be downloaded and compiled manually.
The thesis comes to the conclusion that considering C++ is not officially supported by the Rust FFI, it works very well with the C ABI and apart from one floating point type, no clear limitations or incompatibilities were identified. For interfaces that only work with basic types and to get a general understanding of the topic, this thesis is a good starting point and guide for a developer who is new to the topic.
Context: Software tools integral to the testing process of automotive software must provide evidence that they are functioning as intended. The safety standard ISO 26262 outlines methods for qualifying these tools; the scope of the thesis lies in Method 1c tool qualification. Ensuring compliance has the potential to create bottlenecks in the tool vendor’s development process.
Objectives: This thesis aims to reduce the qualification effort by integrating automation techniques such as continuous practices while complying with ISO 26262 requirements. Therefore, a concept was developed consisting of widely used components to enable its applicability not only to the tool under investigation but also to related tools.
Methods: An internal study was undertaken to investigate TEST-GUIDE, the software tool targeted to the application of the proposed concept. Regarding development, the chosen components are based on the analysis of acknowledged surveys published in 2023. To explore additional automation degrees feasible in tool qualification, a taxonomy is presented.
Results: The developed concept was successfully applied to one feature of TEST-GUIDE, leading to a tool qualification report that represents the validation results. At the same time, room for optimization is identified concerning the qualification of multiple features.
Conclusions: This thesis presents an automated approach to encountering bottlenecks that occur during tool qualification. Additionally, the taxonomy serves as guidance to derive novel concepts according to a desired automation degree in this domain.
