Analysis of errors during the construction of large press tools and development of a lessons learned process

  • “Every process can be improved further and there is no upper limit to an improvement” as rightly pointed out by Mr Alexander Smith shares a broad insight into not just a manufacturing company but life in general. The concept of continual improvement not only plays a vital role in our lives an individual but also the processes followed by an organisation to develop a product or provide a service in a very cost-competitive market. Among the various areas of organisational development, a key area is business process improvement as stated in research by Tony et al. [1]. The construction of large press tools is a resources intensive, time-consuming and expensive process which in the scope of an automotive manufacturer requires an immense collaboration of a large number of internal and external departments, external companies and other stakeholders. Since any deviation in the prescribed process costs time and money for modification to ensure quality, it is important to develop a process to analyse the typical errors which rise during the“Every process can be improved further and there is no upper limit to an improvement” as rightly pointed out by Mr Alexander Smith shares a broad insight into not just a manufacturing company but life in general. The construction of large press tools is a resources intensive, time-consuming and expensive process which in the scope of an automotive manufacturer requires an immense collaboration of a large number of internal and external departments, external companies and other stakeholders. Since any deviation in the prescribed process costs time and money for modification to ensure quality, it is important to develop a process to analyse the typical errors which rise during the construction, classify them and find out the improvement potentials in the internal and external working. Keeping this goal in mind a structured approach is taken to study the process of construction of large press tools in BMW, develop tools to automate the analysis process and finally a lessons learned process is described to cascade the learnings from the results intra and inter department.show moreshow less
