TY - THES A1 - Sood, Saili T1 - Emerging technologies in retail BT - a study between Germany and India N2 - With E-Commerce rising at an unparalleled pace all over the world, brick and mortar stores need to work twice as hard to gain consumer interest. While there is always a convenience when shopping online, there can still be a healthy way in which offline retailers can compete with online retailers by enhancing the experience through use of various emerging technologies. Before making a purchase, beyond the price, German consumers wish to learn the maximum amount about the actual product offerings and its features. German consumers are becoming increasingly conscious about the environment, this is also why there is a consumption trend for more environment friendly products. On the contrary, the average Indian consumer has a behavior that is driven by a compartmentalized society; thus, it is easier for the brand to advertise by digital means and word of mouth. Rather than the credibility of the brand, Indian customers look for added value of the purchase. In the remote locations of India, digital technology plays a major role in areas like retailing, services and consumer foods which is powered by the increased access to low-cost high-speed wireless internet and smartphone penetration. While Germany is an economic powerhouse, it continues to lag behind in terms of digital reediness. The slow adoption of digital commerce by German consumers stems from different factors. Cash remains influential in the payment environment, viewed by the budget-conscious older generation as a simpler means of payment to keep track of costs. These differences in consumer behaviors raise the necessity to research on the reasons of retailers for adopting new technologies in the physical stores. This research focuses on the retailer’s perspectives from the Indian and German markets, and presents a list of existing and emerging in-store consumer-facing technologies. The results of this thesis provide an understanding of the retail customers consumption pattern in both the countries with respect to the existing and emerging retail trends. This research also highlights the strategies that can be adopted by the physical retailers based on their successful implementation in Germany and India in terms of consumer facing technologies.
