Its main objectives are in energy efficiency, waste heat recovery and the feasibility of a solar-thermal process heating system. Based on the particular simulation results the overall solar-thermal potentials for German breweries and dairies were determined. In this connection a literature review indicated that most of the potential studies on solar-thermal energy use in the industry or related to specific industrial sectors are based on the total use of low-temperature heat. In opposition to these results, the available and mainly limited roof area was found to be a more important aspect for the solar-thermal potential. Hence, the development of a methodology for a site- specific analysis was necessary. The interconnection of only a few defined evaluation criteria resulted in a more realistic estimation of the potential for a solar-thermal heat supply. Validation using experimental results of conventional flat-plate collectors showed satisfying results especially regarding the calculation of individual part temperatures of a collector. The model was used to predict system efficiency as well as individual part temperatures in order to analyse a polymeric collector approach in comparison to a conventional collector. The simulation results showed that the fractional energy savings of systems with conventional flat-plate collectors cannot be reached with the analysed polymeric collector approach. Also the stagnation temperatures of more efficient approaches are too high for low-cost polymeric materials. The exemplary analysis of annual temperature loads of the backside insulation for different approaches proved the necessity of careful collector design aiming at temperature reduction for all individual collector parts. A monetary product life cycle evaluation for different alternatives supports the decision-making process beyond the initial purchase price. Beside the cost perspective, the reduction of CO2 emissions also becomes an important goal for the industry. Therefore, the life cycle assessment is a concept to evaluate the environmental impact along the product life cycle. In conclusion, the cost and environmental approaches deal with the consequences of decisions. Thus, the production planning department has the task to evaluate both dimensions for manufacturing equipment. However, the implementation of these life cycle approaches is still moving forward slowly due to lack of both information at the decision point, and a practical method to support decision-making. This paper shows a framework for the life cycle rating for manufacturing equipment within the planning phase. The framework supports the decision-making process regarding economic and environmental consequences. N2 - The Advisory Board for Junior Scientific Staff (WiN) of the German Informatics Society (GI) calls for and recommends measures to improve the situation of doctoral candidates and post-doctoral researchers in computer science and other technical sciences. Doctoral and postdoctoral scientists in the field of computer science are increasingly affected by the complex structural and financial problems of academia. The bottleneck on the way to a professorship leads to precarious employment conditions in academic careers. The difficulty in combining family and academic careers creates an additional disadvantage, especially for female scientists. A lack of quality assurance and reliable and transparent decision-making processes make it difficult to identify and deal with conflicts during the doctoral and postdoctoral period. Misguided incentives in the academic system impair the direct, intensive and regular supervision of early career researchers. Timely coping with the challenges outlined in this paper is of central importance for the future survival of university research institutions and for a successful continuation of the principle of best selection. In addition to measures already planned and implemented to empower early career researchers, this paper outlines concrete measures to improve supervision during the doctoral phase, and to structure and create further career paths in academia.
