<title language="eng">Examining the perspective of expats and students on DEI management practices of SMEs in Germany</title>
DEI management is essential for promoting innovation, attracting, and maintaining people, and improving organizational performance in small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) in Germany. Designing effective DEI strategies in SMEs in Germany requires considering the perspectives of expatriates and students because they bring diverse cultural backgrounds and experiences that offer unique insights into DEI challenges and opportunities, and because students, as the future workforce, represent the expectations of the next generation for inclusive workplaces. This thesis looked at their experiences, challenges, and suggestions in this regard to better understand their viewpoints on DEI and find opportunities to enhance SME DEI strategy. This study used a qualitative interviewing methodology in which a series of questions were posed to students and expats. Many students mentioned that the German language is the major challenge they face in all areas and recommended that the leaders and managers be more patient and open for communication and provide free language trainings including trainings for their career development in Germany. The findings or data from the students’ one-on-one interviews were validated in an expert interview. From the expert interview it was concluded that the usage of language and its enforcement at work is crucial for a student’s career development in Germany. The inputs of expert were taken on all the dimensions and areas of DEI and a framework was developed that could help SMEs with their DEI management practices in Germany. Furthermore, it was also concluded that diversity is a give-and-take concept where the international students must make equal efforts in learning and usage of the language and make efforts in integrating into the German work culture.
