    <title language="eng">Analysis, formalisation and improvement of aircraft ground equipment development using a model based systems engineering approach.</title>
    <abstract language="eng">Developing complex systems requires processes able to adapt to the increasing systems complexity level. The Aircraft ground equipment (AGE) development process is based on a systems engineering approach, well known for its versatility and flexibility. Determining if there is any improvement potential by introducing a model based systems engineering approach is key for establishing the scope of the thesis. Model based systems engineering (MBSE) is a formalised approach which supports the implementation of systems engineering activities. It serves to develop and integrate complex systems in an effective and efficient form. Systems engineering is the currently in use approach. However, there is an apparent lack of process formalisation and standardisation. The main objectives of this thesis are the process analysis, the formalisation of processes and the introduction of modelling approaches as part of an improvement proposal.&#13;
The development process has been analysed to determine the improvement potential. There is no standard approach for analysing a process. Therefore, a process overview has been prepared to obtain an expert’s opinion. The results concluded in the recommendation of introducing a new process step. This should assist in reviewing the system’s purpose and serve as a base for modelling, system drafting and all the remaining development steps.&#13;
The proposal validation and evaluation suggest that the proposed improvements will deliver a notable process improvement. This should be responsible for improved system quality, error reduction and process formalisation. Implementing modelling standards will set the foundations for future modelling and process automation.
