One potential hazard of cycling, especially in cities, is "dooring"—passing parked vehicles that still have occupants inside. These occupants could open the vehicle door unexpectedly in the cyclist's path—requiring a quick evasive response by the cyclist to avoid a collision. Dooring can be very poorly anticipated; as a possible solution, we propose in this work a system that notifies the cyclist of opening doors based on a networked intelligent transportation infrastructure. In a user study with a bicycle simulator (N = 24), we examined the effects of three user interface designs compared to a baseline (no notifications) on cycling behavior (speed and lateral position), perceived safety, and ease of use. Awareness messages (either visual message, visual message + auditory icon, or visual + voice message) were displayed on a smart bicycle helmet at different times before passing a parked, still-occupied vehicle. Our participants found the notifications of potential hazards very easy to understand and appealing and felt that the alerts could help them navigate traffic more safely. Those concepts that (additionally) used auditory icons or voice messages were preferred. In addition, the lateral distance increased significantly when a potentially opening door was indicated. In these situations, cyclists were able to safely pass the parked vehicle without braking. In summary, we are convinced that notification systems, such as the one presented here, are an important component for increasing road safety, especially for vulnerable road users.}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{vonSawitzkyGrauschopfRiener2023, author = {von Sawitzky, Tamara and Grauschopf, Thomas and Riener, Andreas}, title = {Supporting Cyclists through Hazard Notification Systems: Insights from the Evaluation of Notification Modalities with a Head-mounted Wearable System}, booktitle = {Mensch und Computer 2023 - Workshopband}, editor = {Fr{\"o}hlich, Peter and Cobus, Vanessa}, publisher = {Gesellschaft f{\"u}r Informatik e.V.}, address = {Bonn}, doi = {https://doi.org/10.18420/muc2023-mci-ws03-469}, year = {2023}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{SavinovonSawitzkyMatviienkoetal.2021, author = {Savino, Gian-Luca and von Sawitzky, Tamara and Matviienko, Andrii and Sturdee, Miriam and Wozniak, Pawel and L{\"o}chtefeld, Markus and Kun, Andrew and Riener, Andreas and H{\"a}kkil{\"a}, Jonna}, title = {Cycling@CHI: Towards a Research Agenda for HCI in the Bike Lane}, pages = {107}, booktitle = {CHI'21: Extended Abstracts of the 2021 CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems}, publisher = {ACM}, address = {New York}, isbn = {978-1-4503-8095-9}, doi = {https://doi.org/10.1145/3411763.3441316}, year = {2021}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{RienerGeislerPflegingetal.2019, author = {Riener, Andreas and Geisler, Stefan and Pfleging, Bastian and von Sawitzky, Tamara and Detjen, Henrik}, title = {8th Workshop Automotive HMIs: UI Research in the Age of New Digital Realities}, booktitle = {Mensch und Computer 2019 - Workshopband}, publisher = {Gesellschaft f{\"u}r Informatik e.V.}, address = {Bonn}, doi = {https://doi.org/10.18420/muc2019-ws-282}, pages = {397 -- 399}, year = {2019}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{vonSawitzkyWintersbergerLoeckenetal.2020, author = {von Sawitzky, Tamara and Wintersberger, Philipp and L{\"o}cken, Andreas and Frison, Anna-Katharina and Riener, Andreas}, title = {Augmentation Concepts with HUDs for Cyclists to Improve Road Safety in Shared Spaces}, booktitle = {CHI'20: Extended Abstracts of the 2020 CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems}, publisher = {ACM}, address = {New York}, isbn = {978-1-4503-6819-3}, doi = {http://dx.doi.org/10.1145/3334480.3383022}, year = {2020}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{vonSawitzkyWintersbergerRieneretal.2019, author = {von Sawitzky, Tamara and Wintersberger, Philipp and Riener, Andreas and Gabbard, Joseph}, title = {Increasing trust in fully automated driving: route indication on an augmented reality head-up display}, booktitle = {PerDis '19: Proceedings of the 8th ACM International Symposium on Pervasive Displays}, editor = {Cauchard, Jessica and Gentile, Vito and Khamis, Mohamed and Sorce, Salvatore}, publisher = {ACM}, address = {New York}, isbn = {978-1-4503-6751-6}, doi = {https://doi.org/10.1145/3321335.3324947}, year = {2019}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{vonSawitzkyGrauschopfRiener2022, author = {von Sawitzky, Tamara and Grauschopf, Thomas and Riener, Andreas}, title = {Hazard notifications for cyclists: comparison of awareness message modalities in a mixed reality study}, booktitle = {IUI '22: 27th International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces}, publisher = {ACM}, address = {New York}, isbn = {978-1-4503-9144-3}, doi = {https://doi.org/10.1145/3490099.3511127}, pages = {310 -- 322}, year = {2022}, language = {en} } @article{WintersbergerFrisonRieneretal.2018, author = {Wintersberger, Philipp and Frison, Anna-Katharina and Riener, Andreas and von Sawitzky, Tamara}, title = {Fostering User Acceptance and Trust in Fully Automated Vehicles: Evaluating the Potential of Augmented Reality}, volume = {27}, journal = {PRESENCE: Virtual and Augmented Reality}, number = {1}, publisher = {MIT Press}, address = {Cambridge}, issn = {1531-3263}, doi = {https://doi.org/10.1162/pres_a_00320}, pages = {46 -- 62}, year = {2018}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{vonSawitzkyGrauschopfRiener2020, author = {von Sawitzky, Tamara and Grauschopf, Thomas and Riener, Andreas}, title = {No Need to Slow Down!
