However, they do not show the full potential of using them as a supplement to public transport, since single-occupancy registration of the vehicles usually allows only slow speeds and also requires a substitute driver on board. In our study, we aim to (1) examine the status quo of its user acceptance and (2) identify the roles of the operators and their tasks in automated urban shuttle buses. We conducted a mixed-method study including in-depth interviews, questionnaires, and in-the-field observations visiting pilot projects of the two most widespread pilot projects on German streets. Our results uncover the multiple roles and tasks the human operators currently assume. Furthermore, we developed design approaches for a digital companion substituting the operator in a long run and evaluated these concepts. A remote operator or a hologram were preferred solutions and we propose further design requirements for such companions. This work helps to understand the individual roles that operators currently occupy and provides a good basis for concepts of technologies that will perform these tasks in the future.}, language = {en} } @article{JeonParkKimetal.2021, author = {Jeon, Myounghoon and Park, Chung Hyuk and Kim, Yunkyung and Riener, Andreas and Mara, Martina}, title = {Editorial: Contextualized Affective Interactions With Robots}, volume = {12}, pages = {780685}, journal = {Frontiers in Psychology}, publisher = {Frontiers}, address = {Lausanne}, issn = {1664-1078}, doi = {https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2021.780685}, year = {2021}, language = {en} } @article{LudwigWeberMaedcheetal.2023, author = {Ludwig, Thomas and Weber, Philip and Maedche, Alexander and Riener, Andreas}, title = {Special issue on "conversational agents" - Editorial}, volume = {22}, journal = {i-com: Journal of Interactive Media}, number = {1}, publisher = {De Gruyter}, address = {Berlin}, issn = {2196-6826}, doi = {https://doi.org/10.1515/icom-2023-0010}, pages = {1 -- 2}, year = {2023}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{SchartmuellerRiener2022, author = {Schartm{\"u}ller, Clemens and Riener, Andreas}, title = {Multimodal error correction for speech-to-text in a mobile office automated vehicle: results from a remote study}, booktitle = {IUI'22: 27th International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces}, publisher = {ACM}, address = {New York}, isbn = {978-1-4503-9144-3}, doi = {https://doi.org/10.1145/3490099.3511131}, pages = {496 -- 505}, year = {2022}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{vonSawitzkyGrauschopfRiener2022, author = {von Sawitzky, Tamara and Grauschopf, Thomas and Riener, Andreas}, title = {Hazard notifications for cyclists: comparison of awareness message modalities in a mixed reality study}, booktitle = {IUI '22: 27th International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces}, publisher = {ACM}, address = {New York}, isbn = {978-1-4503-9144-3}, doi = {https://doi.org/10.1145/3490099.3511127}, pages = {310 -- 322}, year = {2022}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{SchartmuellerRienerWintersberger2018, author = {Schartm{\"u}ller, Clemens and Riener, Andreas and Wintersberger, Philipp}, title = {Steer-By-WiFi: lateral vehicle control for take-overs with nomadic devices}, booktitle = {Adjunct Proceedings: 10th International ACM Conference on Automotive User Interfaces and Interactive Vehicular Applications}, publisher = {ACM}, address = {New York}, isbn = {978-1-4503-5947-4}, doi = {https://doi.org/10.1145/3239092.3265954}, pages = {121 -- 126}, year = {2018}, language = {en} } @article{FunkDrechslerPeintnerRewayetal.2022, author = {Funk Drechsler, Maikol and Peintner, Jakob and Reway, Fabio and Seifert, Georg and Riener, Andreas and Huber, Werner}, title = {MiRE, A Mixed Reality Environment for Testing of Automated Driving Functions}, volume = {71}, journal = {IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology}, number = {4}, publisher = {IEEE}, address = {New York}, issn = {0018-9545}, doi = {https://doi.org/10.1109/TVT.2022.3160353}, pages = {3443 -- 3456}, year = {2022}, language = {en} } @article{WeiglSteinhauserRiener2022, author = {Weigl, Klemens and Steinhauser, Marco and Riener, Andreas}, title = {Gender and age differences in the anticipated acceptance of automated vehicles: insights from a questionnaire study and potential for application}, volume = {27}, journal = {Gender, Technology and Development}, number = {1}, publisher = {Routledge}, address = {London}, issn = {0973-0656}, doi = {https://doi.org/10.1080/09718524.2022.2137893}, pages = {88 -- 108}, year = {2022}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{PeintnerFunkDrechslerMangeretal.2022, author = {Peintner, Jakob and Funk Drechsler, Maikol and Manger, Carina and Seifert, Georg and Reway, Fabio and Huber, Werner and Riener, Andreas}, title = {Comparing Different Pedestrian Representations for Testing Automated Driving Functions in Mixed Reality Environments}, booktitle = {Proceedings of the International Conference on Vehicle Electronics and Safety (ICVES 2022)}, publisher = {IEEE}, address = {Piscataway}, isbn = {978-1-6654-7698-0}, doi = {https://doi.org/10.1109/ICVES56941.2022.9986669}, year = {2022}, language = {en} } @article{BrewsterKunRieneretal.2021, author = {Brewster, Stephen and Kun, Andrew and Riener, Andreas and Shaer, Orit}, title = {Human-Computer Interaction to Support Work and Wellbeing in Mobile Environments}, volume = {11}, journal = {Dagstuhl Reports}, number = {5}, publisher = {Schloss Dagstuhl}, address = {Dagstuhl}, issn = {2192-5283}, doi = {https://doi.org/10.4230/DagRep.11.5.23}, pages = {23 -- 53}, year = {2021}, abstract = {We are living in a world where ubiquitous computing devices are becoming parts of the fabric of our lives. At work and at school, devices such as calculators, tablet computers, mobile phones, and different electronic measurement devices, support our work and learning. Building on all of these technological advancements will be novel human-computer interaction techniques that will allow us to use the devices for work and play in a broad set of circumstances, from riding in automated vehicles, to exploring museums, to walking on the street, to playing with our kids on the beach. The central underlying question Dagstuhl seminar 21232 wanted to address is, "how will we interact with the ubiquitous devices of our near (and not-so-near) future?" To date, there are a number of interaction techniques that show significant promise, including speech, augmented reality, tangible objects, gesture, multitouch screens, as well as simple keyboards and non-touch displays. But, before we address technologies to use, we must first identify the economic and broad societal driving forces that will create the need for interaction with our ubiquitous computing devices. From the economic point of view worker well-being is one such driving force; another one is the need to improve the productivity of workers and firms; yet another is the need to provide access to continuous education to a changing workforce. From the broad perspective of our society, it is important for us to understand how ubiquitous technologies can support living a meaningful and fulfilling life, from childhood to adulthood. In the following, we report the program, activities, and the outcomes of Dagstuhl Seminar 21232 "Human-Computer Interaction to Support Work and Wellbeing in Mobile Environments".}, language = {en} } @article{WeiglSchartmuellerRiener2022, author = {Weigl, Klemens and Schartm{\"u}ller, Clemens and Riener, Andreas}, title = {Development of the Questionnaire on Non-Driving Related Tasks (QNDRT) in automated driving: revealing age and gender differences}, volume = {42}, journal = {Behaviour \& Information Technology}, number = {9}, publisher = {Taylor \& Francis}, address = {London}, issn = {1362-3001}, doi = {https://doi.org/10.1080/0144929X.2022.2073473}, pages = {1374 -- 1388}, year = {2022}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{SchartmuellerWintersbergerRiener2017, author = {Schartm{\"u}ller, Clemens and Wintersberger, Philipp and Riener, Andreas}, title = {Interactive Demo: Rapid, Live Data Supported Prototyping with U.S.E.}, booktitle = {AutomotiveUI 2017: The 9th International ACM Conference on Automotive User Interfaces and Interactive Vehicular Applications: Adjunct Proceedings}, publisher = {ACM}, address = {New York}, isbn = {978-1-4503-5151-5}, doi = {https://doi.org/10.1145/3131726.3132046}, pages = {239 -- 241}, year = {2017}, language = {en} } @inbook{Riener2017, author = {Riener, Andreas}, title = {Subliminal Perception or "Can We Perceive and Be Influenced by Stimuli That Do Not Reach Us on a Conscious Level?"}, booktitle = {Emotions and Affect in Human Factors and Human-Computer Interaction}, editor = {Jeon, Myounghoon}, publisher = {Academic Press/Elsevier}, address = {London}, isbn = {978-0-12-801851-4}, doi = {https://doi.org/10.1016/B978-0-12-801851-4.00019-7}, pages = {503 -- 538}, year = {2017}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{WeiglSchusterRiener2021, author = {Weigl, Klemens and Schuster, Sabrina and Riener, Andreas}, title = {Investigation of UX and Flow Experience in Sports Activities during the Covid-19 Pandemic: A Comparative Analysis of Cycling Apps}, booktitle = {icSPORTS 2021: 9th International Conference on Sport Sciences Research and Technology Support: Proceedings}, editor = {Pezarat-Correia, Pedro and Vilas-Boas, Jo{\~a}o P. and Cabri, Jan}, publisher = {SciTePress}, address = {Set{\´u}bal}, isbn = {978-989-758-539-5}, issn = {2184-3201}, doi = {https://doi.org/10.5220/0010688200003059}, pages = {68}, year = {2021}, abstract = {Since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, a dramatic increase in mHealth application (app) downloads has been documented. However, overall dwell retention for fitness apps is low, so gamification techniques are used within apps with the goal of positively influencing the user experience and ultimately the user's motivation. The so-called flow, which is related to intrinsic motivation, has been little explored in the context of cycling apps. Therefore, we conducted a quasi-experimental cycling study with 34 cyclists (20 female, 14 male; 19 to 57 years old) who tested the adidas Running by Runtastic (Adidas Runtastic), Komoot, and Strava cycling apps during a 20-minute bike ride. After testing each cycling app, they completed the User Experience Questionnaire (UEQ) and the Flow State Scale-2 Short (FSS-2S). Our results showed no significant differences across the six factors of the UEQ, nor across the total score of the FSS-2S. Thus, we conclude that the three cycling apps Adidas Runta stic, Komoot, and Strava are perceived and rated almost equally by female and male cyclists.}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{PfeilschifterBauderPaulaetal.2023, author = {Pfeilschifter, Claus and Bauder, Maximilian and Paula, Daniel and Riener, Andreas and Schweiger, Hans-Georg}, title = {Using a Driving Simulator to Assess Reaction Times and Driving Behavior for Forensic Accident Analysis}, booktitle = {15th International ACM Conference on Automotive User Interfaces: Adjunct Conference Proceedings}, publisher = {ACM}, address = {New York}, isbn = {979-8-4007-0112-2}, doi = {https://doi.org/10.1145/3581961.3609846}, pages = {320 -- 322}, year = {2023}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{PeintnerMangerRiener2023, author = {Peintner, Jakob and Manger, Carina and Riener, Andreas}, title = {Communication of Uncertainty Information in Cooperative, Automated Driving: A Comparative Study of Different Modalities}, booktitle = {15th International ACM Conference on Automotive User Interfaces: Main Conference Proceedings}, publisher = {ACM}, address = {New York}, isbn = {979-8-4007-0105-4}, doi = {https://doi.org/10.1145/3580585.3607154}, pages = {322 -- 332}, year = {2023}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{RollwagenSchussRiener2023, author = {Rollwagen, Alice and Schuß, Martina and Riener, Andreas}, title = {Enhancing Accessibility for Diverse User Groups in Automated Shuttle Buses: Implications from a User Enactment Study}, booktitle = {15th International ACM Conference on Automotive User Interfaces: Adjunct Conference Proceedings}, publisher = {ACM}, address = {New York}, isbn = {979-8-4007-0112-2}, doi = {https://doi.org/10.1145/3581961.3609876}, pages = {77 -- 82}, year = {2023}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{MangerVoglRosbachetal.2023, author = {Manger, Carina and Vogl, Annalena and Rosbach, Emely and Ziegler, Carina and Riener, Andreas}, title = {Automation's Not Perfect But Neither Are We: Unveiling Illusionary Control And Automation Bias In Automated Driving}, booktitle = {15th International ACM Conference on Automotive User Interfaces: Adjunct Conference Proceedings}, publisher = {ACM}, address = {New York}, isbn = {979-8-4007-0112-2}, doi = {https://doi.org/10.1145/3581961.3609897}, pages = {25 -- 29}, year = {2023}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{SchussHimmelsRiener2023, author = {Schuß, Martina and Himmels, Chantal and Riener, Andreas}, title = {Development of a Perceived Security Scale for Shared Automated Vehicles (PSSAV) and its Validation in Colombia and Germany}, booktitle = {15th International ACM Conference on Automotive User Interfaces: Main Conference Proceedings}, publisher = {ACM}, address = {New York}, isbn = {979-8-4007-0105-4}, doi = {https://doi.org/10.1145/3580585.3607177}, pages = {52 -- 62}, year = {2023}, language = {en} } @article{SchussPizzoniRiener2024, author = {Schuß, Martina and Pizzoni, Luca and Riener, Andreas}, title = {Human or robot? In the future, these vehicles will operate with no human driver on board, which poses several challenges that might differ depending on the cultural context and make one-fits-all solutions demanding. A promising substitute for the driver could be Digital Companions (DCs), i.e. conversational agents presented on a screen inside the vehicles. We conducted interviews with Colombian participants and workshops with German and Korean participants and derived two design concepts of DCs as an alternative for the human driver on SAVs: a human-like and a robot-like. We compared these two concepts to a baseline without companion using a scenario-based online questionnaire with participants from Colombia (N = 57), Germany (N = 50), and Korea (N = 29) measuring anxiety, security, trust, risk, control, threat, and user experience. In comparison with the baseline, both DCs are statistically significantly perceived as more positively. While we found a preference for the human-like DC among all participants, this preference is higher among Colombians while Koreans show the highest openness towards the robot-like DC.}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{DoricFrisonWintersbergeretal.2016, author = {Doric, Igor and Frison, Anna-Katharina and Wintersberger, Philipp and Riener, Andreas and Wittmann, Sebastian and Zimmermann, Matheus and Brandmeier, Thomas}, title = {A Novel Approach for Researching Crossing Behavior and Risk Acceptance: The Pedestrian Simulator}, booktitle = {AutomotiveUI 2016, 8th International Conference on Automotive User Interfaces and Interactive Vehicular Applications, Adjunct Proceedings}, publisher = {ACM}, address = {New York}, isbn = {978-1-4503-4654-2}, doi = {https://doi.org/10.1145/3004323.3004324}, pages = {39 -- 44}, year = {2016}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{EscherPeintnerRiener2024, author = {Escher, Bengt and Peintner, Jakob and Riener, Andreas}, title = {Beyond Automation: Exploring Passenger Cooperation and Perception in Teleoperated Shared Automated Vehicles (SAVs)}, booktitle = {2024 IEEE Intelligent Vehicles Symposium (IV)}, publisher = {IEEE}, address = {Piscataway}, isbn = {979-8-3503-4881-1}, doi = {https://doi.org/10.1109/IV55156.2024.10588392}, pages = {1246 -- 1251}, year = {2024}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{AppelSongRiener2024, author = {Appel, Patricia B. and Song, Ye Eun and Riener, Andreas}, title = {Investigating eVTOL Passenger Preferences in South Korea: Safety, Vertiport Location, and Weight}, booktitle = {2024 IEEE Intelligent Vehicles Symposium (IV)}, publisher = {IEEE}, address = {Piscataway}, isbn = {979-8-3503-4881-1}, doi = {https://doi.org/10.1109/IV55156.2024.10588875}, pages = {3269 -- 3275}, year = {2024}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{BoeckAppelEisenmannetal.2024, author = {B{\"o}ck, Henrike and Appel, Patricia B. and Eisenmann, Lena Maria and Kaiser, Larissa and Riener, Andreas}, title = {Exploring Turbulence Impact on Passenger Experience in Urban Air Mobility: Insights from a Virtual Reality Study}, booktitle = {2024 IEEE Intelligent Vehicles Symposium (IV)}, publisher = {IEEE}, address = {Piscataway}, isbn = {979-8-3503-4881-1}, doi = {https://doi.org/10.1109/IV55156.2024.10588742}, pages = {3114 -- 3119}, year = {2024}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{PeintnerHimmelsRocketal.2024, author = {Peintner, Jakob and Himmels, Chantal and Rock, Teresa and Manger, Carina and Jung, Oliver and Riener, Andreas}, title = {Driving Behavior Analysis: A Human Factors Perspective on Automated Driving Styles}, booktitle = {2024 IEEE Intelligent Vehicles Symposium (IV)}, publisher = {IEEE}, address = {Piscataway}, isbn = {979-8-3503-4881-1}, doi = {https://doi.org/10.1109/IV55156.2024.10588527}, pages = {3312 -- 3317}, year = {2024}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{HimmelsPeintnerMangeretal.2024, author = {Himmels, Chantal and Peintner, Jakob and Manger, Carina and Rock, Teresa and Jung, Oliver and Riener, Andreas}, title = {In Search of Social Presence: Evoking an Impression of Real Pedestrian Behavior Using Motion Capture}, booktitle = {2024 IEEE Intelligent Vehicles Symposium (IV)}, publisher = {IEEE}, address = {Piscataway}, isbn = {979-8-3503-4881-1}, doi = {https://doi.org/10.1109/IV55156.2024.10588404}, pages = {82 -- 90}, year = {2024}, language = {en} }
