By contrast, GPU compute platforms offer powerful, feature-rich languages suitable for heterogeneous compute. We propose reframing shading languages as embedded domain-specific languages, layered on top of a more general language like C++, doing away with traditional limitations on pointers, functions, and recursion, to the benefit of programmability. This represents a significant compilation challenge because the limitations of shaders are reflected in their lower-level representations. We present the Vcc compiler, which allows conventional C and C++ code to run as Vulkan shaders. Our compiler is complemented by a simple shading library and exposes GPU particulars as intrinsics and annotations. We evaluate the performance of our compiler using a selection of benchmarks, including a real-time path tracer, achieving competitive performance compared to their native CUDA counterparts.}, language = {en} } @article{EckertGoelitzLueckingetal.2016, author = {Eckert, Matthias and G{\"o}litz, Philipp and L{\"u}cking, Hannes and Struffert, Tobias and Knossalla, Frauke and Doerfler, Arnd}, title = {Optimized Flat-Detector CT in Stroke Imaging: Ready for First-Line Use?}, volume = {43}, journal = {Cerebrovascular Diseases}, number = {1-2}, publisher = {S. Herein, knowledge about the process temperature is of critical importance since it affects the material properties, such as hardness or forming behavior, as well as the chemical and physical interactions between the tool, workpiece, and lubricant. A proven thermoelectric method of temperature measurement in machining, forming, and blanking is a tool-workpiece thermocouple. Herein, instantaneous measurement of the temperature development is allowed in this setup during the manufacturing process in situ at the contact area of the tool and workpiece. The accuracy of this method is dependent on the calibration of the thermocouple, for which the Seebeck coefficients of the tool and workpiece material have to be determined. Usually, material samples from different batches are used for this purpose, although the resulting measurement errors due to slight changes in material properties are hardly known. The effects of small changes in the chemical composition and the transformation of the crystal lattice due to hardening on the Seebeck coefficient are investigated for the first time to allow precise quantification of the measurement error resulting from the calibration process.}, language = {en} } @article{KuhnHuberDorfneretal.2015, author = {Kuhn, Philipp and Huber, Matthias and Dorfner, Johannes and Hamacher, Thomas}, title = {Challenges and opportunities of power systems from smart homes to super-grids}, volume = {45}, journal = {Ambio}, number = {Suppl 1}, publisher = {Springer}, address = {Dordrecht}, issn = {1654-7209}, doi = {https://doi.org/10.1007/s13280-015-0733-x}, pages = {50 -- 62}, year = {2015}, abstract = {The world's power systems are facing a structural change including liberalization of markets and integration of renewable energy sources. This paper describes the challenges that lie ahead in this process and points out avenues for overcoming different problems at different scopes, ranging from individual homes to international super-grids. We apply energy system models at those different scopes and find a trade-off between technical and social complexity. Small-scale systems would require technological breakthroughs, especially for storage, but individual agents can and do already start to build and operate such systems. In contrast, large-scale systems could potentially be more efficient from a techno-economic point of view. However, new political frameworks are required that enable long-term cooperation among sovereign entities through mutual trust.
