In the automotive industry, ensuring the functional safety over the product life cycle while limiting maintenance costs has become a major challenge. One crucial approach to achieve this, is predictive maintenance (PdM). Since modern vehicles come with an enormous amount of operating data, ML is an ideal candidate for PdM. While PdM and ML for automotive systems have both been covered in numerous review papers, there is no current survey on ML-based PdM for automotive systems. The number of publications in this field is increasing — underlining the need for such a survey. Consequently, we survey and categorize papers and analyse them from an application and ML perspective. Following that, we identify open challenges and discuss possible research directions. We conclude that (a) publicly available data would lead to a boost in research activities, (b) the majority of papers rely on supervised methods requiring labelled data, (c) combining multiple data sources can improve accuracies, (d) the use of deep learning methods will further increase but requires efficient and interpretable methods and the availability of large amounts of (labelled) data.}, language = {en} } @article{ReiterTrinklZoerneretal.2015, author = {Reiter, Christoph and Trinkl, Christoph and Z{\"o}rner, Wilfried and Hanby, Victor Ian}, title = {A Dynamic Multinode Model for Component-Oriented Thermal Analysis of Flat-Plate Solar Collectors}, volume = {2015}, pages = {280694}, journal = {Journal of Solar Energy}, publisher = {Hindawi Publ.}, address = {New York; Cairo}, issn = {2314-6230}, doi = {http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2015/280694}, year = {2015}, abstract = {A mathematical model of a flat-plate solar collector was developed on the basis of the physical principles of optics and heat transfer in order to determine collector's component temperatures as well as collector efficiency. In contrast to many available models, the targeted use of this dynamic model is the detailed, theoretical investigation of the thermal behaviour of newly developed or adjusted collector designs on component level, for example, absorber, casing, or transparent cover. The defined model is based on a multinode network (absorber, fluid, glazing, and backside insulation) containing the relevant physical equations to transfer the energy. The heat transfer network covers heat conduction, convection, and radiation. Furthermore, the collector optics is defined for the plane glazing and the absorber surface and also considers interactions between them. Forward-looking sensors (radar, lidar and cameras) have the technical capability to already provide important (pre-)crash information, such as the position of contact, relative crash velocity and overlap (width of contact) before the crash occurs. Future safety systems can improve crash mitigation with sophisticated vehicle safety strategies based on this information. One such strategy is an early activation of restraint systems compared with conventional passive safety systems. These integrated safety systems consist of a combination of predictive forward-looking sensors and occupant restraint systems (airbags, belt tensioners, etc.) to provide the best occupant safety in inevitable crash situations. The activation of the restraint systems is the most critical decision process and requires a very robust validation system to avoid false activation. Hence, the information provided by the forward-looking sensor needs to be highly reliable. A validation sensor is required to check the plausibility of crucial information from forward-looking sensors used in integrated safety systems for safe automated and autonomous driving. This work presents a CFRP-based (carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic) validation sensor working on the principle of change in electrical resistance when a contact occurs. This sensor detects the first contact, gives information on impact position (where the contact occurs) and provides information on the overlap. The aim is to activate the vehicle restraint systems at near T0 (time of first contact). Prototypes of the sensor were manufactured in house and manually and were evaluated. At first, the sensor and its working principle were tested with a pendulum apparatus. In the next stage, the sensor was tested in a real crash test. The comparison of the signals from the CFRP-based sensor with presently used crash sensors in the vehicle highlights its advantages. The crash event can be identified at 0.1 ms after the initial contact. The sensor also provides information on impact position at 1.2 ms and enables a validation of the overlap development. Among the available bioenergy technologies, biogas production via biodegradation and anaerobic digestion is a widely applied approach, not only to produce biofuels but also to manage industrial and domestic organic waste. Within the biogas production, a sufficient mixing of the organic mass is a crucial step to ensure high biogas yields by bacteria and enzymes. Measurements of the electric power consumption of biogas plants revealed that the electrical energy demand of the stirrer system has a high share of the total electricity consumption of a biogas plant. Investigations on real biogas digesters to optimize the mixing process are cost and time intensive. Therefore, laboratory prototypes and computational simulations represent promising alternatives to analyse and improve the efficiency of mixing systems. In this paper, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model is presented, which is applied to commercial stirring systems. The case of two propeller stirrers, located in diametrically opposite positions in a tank filled with ca. 1400 m3 of substrate is described in detail. For the simulation, the rheology of the fluid is adapted to a biomass with 12 wt \% dry matter content and obeying the non-Newtonian generalized Ostwald-de Waele power law. Once the application of probiotics ended, we examined whether acquisition of VRE reoccurred. Although probiotic application ceased in April 2018, VRE-colonized patients rarely presented on that ward until 2019. Probiotic treatment also resulted in a decreased number of patients with VSE and ESBL. While decreased incidence of VRE occurred immediately, decreased VSE and ESBL numbers occurred months later. A probiotic-mediated decrease of VSE and ESBL incidence cannot be explained when assuming bacterial transmission exclusively as a linear cause and effect event. The decrease is better understood by considering bacterial transmissions to be stochastic events, which depend on various driving forces similar to an electric current. We hypothesize that VRE, VSE and ESBL uptake by patients and by staff members mutually reinforced each other, leading staff members to form a bacterial reservoir, similar to a condenser that stores electrical energy. This knowledge is particularly relevant when the therapeutic agents are remarkably adaptable and diverse biological entities capable of a plethora of interactions, most of which remain largely unexplored. Although phage therapy (PT) undoubtedly holds the potential to save lives, its current efficacy in case studies recalls the golden era of antibiotics, when these compounds were highly effective and the possibility of them becoming ineffective seemed remote. Safe PT schemes depend on our understanding of how phages interact with, and evolve in, highly complex environments. Here, we summarize and review emerging evidence in a commonly overlooked theme in PT: bacteria-phage interactions. In particular, we discuss the influence of quorum sensing (QS) on phage susceptibility, the consequent role of phages in modulating bacterial cooperation, and the potential implications of this relationship in PT, including how we can use this knowledge to inform PT strategies. We highlight that the influence of QS on phage susceptibility seems to be widespread but can have contrasting outcomes depending on the bacterial host, underscoring the need to thoroughly characterize this link in various bacterial models. Criteria are selected and properly weighted to determine if the project is effective and feasible. The present research study is focused on methodical selection of design parameters to install two propeller mixers inside anaerobic digesters of biogas plants. A cylindrical tank of 1400 m3 was considered. For the model-based optimisation, the substrate was considered as a non-Newtonian fluid with a density of 1090 kg/m3. The Oswald-de Waele power-law model was selected to account for the rheological behaviour of the fluid. Installation parameters of the mixers were rotational angles and heights of the shafts of the two propellers. A computational model was developed to simulate the fluid dynamics depending on the mixing process inside the tank. Several configurations were analysed according to evaluating criteria such as the value of the fluid velocity, its distribution along the three spatial dimensions, and the power consumption to rotate the mixers. The maximum fluid velocity and minimum power consumption were observed when the propellers are located at intermediate height inside the tank and with the shafts perpendicular to the tank radius. With this configuration, the fluid reaches a maximum velocity of 0.28 m/s. Languages that can provide memory safety at compile-time can be used instead. This thesis examines the suitability of the Rust programming language for embedded software development. The relatively new language provides such memory safety guarantees while offering high performance comparable to other common languages. The objectives of the thesis are to assess the suitability of Rust in comparison to an existing language and to explain the necessary steps when eventually switching development to Rust. The C language is used for the comparison, as it is currently the most common language for embedded software development. To be able to assess Rust objectively, the comparison to C is carried out on the basis of pre-defined aspects that were deemed important. This comparison is explained and discussed in the main part of the thesis. Furthermore, this part contrasts safety and performance by explaining the different safety problems as well as countermeasures and subsequently comparing an example program according to the performance in both languages. To be able to examine the switching process, another set of criteria is employed. Rust is analyzed according to them and an exemplary switching process is provided. Comparing the criteria leads to different findings. Some aspects show a similar suitability of Rust and C. These include the popularity, the compliance with safety standards as well as the performance, although the latter highly depends on the tested application. Positive aspects of C include the large amount of available compilation targets and the maturity. Rust on the other hand stands out through a greater variety of programming paradigms, a state-of-the-art and well-adopted toolchain as well as good documentation, community support and a sound ecosystem. Furthermore the safety guarantees pose a clear advantage over C and make embedded software provably safer. It is also shown that for switching to Rust, numerous resources for employee training are available and different tools for the integration into an existing code base are offered by the programming language and its ecosystem. The results suggest that Rust is indeed suitable for embedded software development, although the choice must not be made without careful consideration of the examined criteria.}, language = {en} } @thesis{Binder2020, author = {Binder, Kathrin Susanne}, title = {Autobahn fahren in geteilter Kontrolle}, subtitle = {Entwicklung eines HMI-Designs zur Steigerung der User Experience und Akzeptanz der Fahrenden w{\"a}hrend einem bedingt automatisierten Fahrbetrieb}, publisher = {Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt}, address = {Ingolstadt}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:bvb:573-7845}, pages = {62, XXVIII}, school = {Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt}, year = {2020}, language = {de} } @thesis{AsadollahiEsfahani2021, author = {Asadollahi Esfahani, Bahareh}, title = {Integrating renewable energies into a district heating network in a residential area in Dachau}, publisher = {Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt}, address = {Ingolstadt}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:bvb:573-7764}, pages = {XIV, 92}, school = {Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt}, year = {2021}, abstract = {The project includes designing a low-temperature district heating network center with a flow and return temperature of 45 °C/20 °C in a modern residential area with 50 buildings with 37,000 square meters located in Dachau, Bavaria and consists two scenarios. This downside causes the necessity to use data science techniques to automate the analysis of an ensemble of crash simulation data. This study aims at setting up a workflow to dimensionally reduce the simulation data, cluster it based on a behavioral pattern and analyze a particular behavioral pattern to obtain if-else rules to avoid or achieve that particular behavioral pattern. In this context, a behavioral pattern refers to an observed characteristic result that occurs because of specific input parameter values. In this thesis, dimensionality reduction is undertaken using feature extraction algorithms, the knowledge behind the simulations is extracted and clustered based on an individual simulation's behavioral pattern using unsupervised clustering algorithms, and the rules to avoid or achieve a particular behavioral pattern are extracted using decision tree algorithm and associative rule mining algorithm. The workflow is applied to a simple side pole impact test, where a pole is impacted to an assembly of three parallel vertical members welded to a horizontal member. Using the workflow, every simulation data is represented using 50 lower-dimensional parameters and the simulations in the dataset are clustered into three different clusters based on three different behavioral patterns observed. One of the behavioral patterns observed is lower buckling of a vertical member, which is not a desired crash behavior to be observed in a crash energy absorption structure and this behavior should be avoided. The rules to avoid this behavioral pattern is further obtained using rule extraction. The results from the study suggest that the workflow and the algorithms used in this thesis to analyze an ensemble of simulation data helps an engineer in efficiently representing simulation data using lower-dimensional embedding, extracting the underlying knowledge, and obtaining rules to avoid or achieve a certain behavioral pattern. Be it for navigation in dynamic environments or simply to grasp objects, depth computation is a central functionality for autonomy. Typically, depth is extracted when having two sensors (i.e. cameras) through matching the perspectives in each of them towards the attended location and is a typical problem in machine vision. When looking at monocular depth extraction, the problem changes and becomes more challenging from both algorithmic and validation perspectives. In this thesis, I address the problem of monocular depth extraction in a comparative setup between traditional (frame-based) cameras and the novel event-based cameras. Targeting practical implementations (i.e. autonomous driving, assistive devices for blind people), I have developed an algorithm benchmarking framework and a physical test-rig for monocular depth computation for both frame-based and event-based cameras. The core contribution of the work is the design and implementation of the test-rig, the software framework for benchmarking the two types of algorithms, together with their calibration and validation. Therefore, as a digital interpretation of this natural interaction, mid-air gestures became a popular method for enabling the interaction with a computer, with use cases ranging from operating graphical or natural user interfaces to interactions in games. However, with the advantages of mid-air gestures, the problem of not experiencing direct haptic feedback arises at the same time. This means that an important aspect that we know from real-world interaction is no longer present. Until now, there are only a few inflexible, complex, commercially available technologies to enable haptic feedback into such interactions. Despite smartwatches with vibration motors already carry the technology to generate vibrotactile stimulation and communicate with external devices via wireless connectivity, to the best of our knowledge, they have not been considered in such a context yet. We believe that such widely spread personal devices could provide a platform for accessible, flexible, and unobtrusive integration of haptic feedback in mid-air gesture interaction. To investigate this potential in the context of mid-air gesture interaction, this thesis deals with the question of how vibrotactile feedback on the wrist can be integrated into gesture interactions with virtual objects to enrich their perception haptically. Following the double-diamond approach, we first qualitatively surveyed user needs and desires for mid-air gesture interactions with virtual objects and focused on the problem of not being able to perceive invisible object properties. A wrist-worn vibrotactile display prototype was developed based on extensive literature research and six different vibration patterns were designed using a modular construction kit. The vibration patterns were rated in a user study (n=18 subjects) via an implemented slingshot game. The results were then statistically analyzed in terms of their user experience (UX), under the criteria of hedonic and pragmatic qualities. Results show that all vibration patterns not only enrich the perception of object properties but also support mid-air gestures, making them more efficient and interesting. This was achieved with the following effects: Through congruent, dynamically changing vibrotactile feedback adapted to the user's input, associations with the virtual objects' behavior are created, making them haptically perceptible. Through constant interaction with an object, it is essential to apply constant, continuous feedback that dynamically changes according to the user's input. Thereby, the orientation of the user's hand in the virtual world is improved by guiding the user through the scene via vibrotactile spatial cues, thus enabling a better estimation of distances. In order to develop any new system, each organization must define strategies to suit ever-evolving market requirements. In the automotive world, electronics system development projects are also subjected to changing OEM's standards and requirements. These development projects have become more difficult to plan and execute with traditional project management techniques. There has been a lot of research and modifications to the current project management techniques to make them more adaptable to the changes during the development period. For switching into the new Project management approaches, project team-mindsets must be changed. The training and introduction to such approaches require lots of effort and investments from the top management. Such challenges can be addressed if the new approach has lesser gaps in methodologies than the running system. However, such cases are rare as different project management techniques have unique definitions and solution approaches towards the target. It is always beneficial for any project team to relate and map artifacts from the new system with the current one. This work also addresses such integration of two different project management methodologies. The traditional Stage-Gate method of project management needs proper planning in a single flow approach. On the other hand, most agile project management deals with the iterative approach towards any problem. This work deals with identifying activities from the Stage-Gate-based PEP system, relating them to the Agile terminologies, and planning the structure of the project. A common solution to this problem is the employment of software-based cryptography to ensure the integrity and confidentiality of the messages sent. However, the concept of employing cryptography to secure internal aircraft communications was only superficially considered in the current research. Instead, the research mainly focused on securing external systems, such as ACARS and ADS-B. For this reason, this study aimed to propose a security solution using software-based cryptography for securing aircraft-internal avionics communication. At the beginning of the research, the scope of all algorithms was reduced to the usage of symmetric authenticated encryption for securing avionics communication. Performance measurements were conducted that showed the superior performance of AES 128 CTR-HMAC SHA 256 over other algorithms. Based on that, a high-level architecture was developed that describes the operational process of the security concept. Accordingly, the cryptographic system is constituted by the combination of the high-level architecture and the selected algorithms. However, the system was not implemented on avionics hardware. More so, the tropical weather condition in Africa, means that building requirement for cooling activities would equally increase. Thus, resulting in growing energy consumption in Buildings. Therefore, it is based on these concerns, that the proposed herbarium building in the Okavango Research Institutes (ORI), in Maun Botswana, seeks to examine environmentally sustainable solution for the proposed herbarium building. This research study, therefore, focuses on evaluating the environmental impact and energy saving potential from the use of commonly available construction materials used for fa{\c{c}}ade units of a building using life cycle assessment methodologies. Thus, clay bricks and hollow concrete blocks were considered for analysis. The life cycle assessment professional software tool, SimaPro 8.4.0 was used in performing a life cycle assessment of the considered building components (clay bricks, hollow concrete blocks, reinforce concrete, window units and PV system). Hence, using this assessment tool, environmental impact assessment on the considered building components was carried out, and the evaluation of the impact category using two environmental indicators, namely: global warming potential and cumulative energy demand, was performed. Furthermore, a comparative study between the considered fa{\c{c}}ade materials (clay brick and hollow concrete block) was performed in order to evaluate the contribution of the different fa{\c{c}}ade unit to the ecological sink of the building system. Also, a comparative study between the fa{\c{c}}ade unit and the other building components was performed to understand the significance of the fa{\c{c}}ade unit in the overall ecological sink of the building. In addition, a CO2 mitigation potential from the use of a PV system for the supply of energy for cooling activities in the proposed herbarium was evaluated against the use of electricity for supply from the Botswana national grid. Consequently, the results obtained showed that hollow concrete block offers a more environmentally friendly solution than clay bricks when used as fa{\c{c}}ade unit in a building system. This because, it contributes twice as less GHG emission to the building ecological sink when compared with clay bricks. Although, clay bricks has a slightly better energy savings potential during the use-phase than hollow concrete block, the environmental impact associated with the production of clay bricks in form of embodied energy, outweighs the energy saving gained during the use-phase for a reference lifetime of 50 years when compared with hollow concrete block. Also, the PV system's CO2 mitigation potential when used for cooling activities during the reference lifetime of the building (50 years), resulted in a CO2 saving potential of 2.03E+06 CO2 Kg-eq. This finding showed that the PV system has a more significant impact on the reduction in the environmental impact of the building system than the environmental impact associated to the fa{\c{c}}ade unit of the proposed herbarium building in Botswana.}, language = {en} } @thesis{Neif2021, author = {Neif, Anneliese}, title = {Station{\"a}rer Modeeinzelhandel in Deutschland}, subtitle = {Chancen und Herausforderungen im Rahmen der digitalen Transformation}, publisher = {Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt}, address = {Ingolstadt}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:bvb:573-8391}, pages = {53, ix}, school = {Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt}, year = {2021}, abstract = {Die Digitalisierung ist in der Mitte der Gesellschaft angekommen und h{\"a}lt massive Ver{\"a}nderungen f{\"u}r die Wirtschaft und Unternehmen bereit.
