TY - THES A1 - Thomeczek, Magdalena T1 - Live GNSS Tracking of Search and Rescue Dogs with LoRa N2 - Dogs have amazing abilities that can be used to help humans, for example when finding people in need with Search and Rescue Dogs. To achieve this years of training are required for both dog and handler. In addition to this dog training is a highly complex topic and avoiding mistakes is crucial. This can be challenging, due to the nature of Area Search Dog (or Air Scenting Dog) training in which the dogs often work out of sight. In these cases live visualisation of the dog’s track can help form a better understanding of the dog, which is key to finding missing persons. This thesis evaluates existing technologies for sending coordinates locally over distances, to track dogs. The results show that current options offer no satisfactory location update frequency, are expensive, lack sufficient range, or are dependent on the availability of third party infrastructure. An affordable alternative is proposed making use of the radio modulation technique LoRa, which can offer sufficient accuracy and update frequency. A prototype shows that a specialised training app can offer reasonable support to decrease the complexity of Search and Rescue work.
