The term Sustainable Development and its first holistic definition in 1986 as "development that meets the needs of present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs" in the Brundtland report seems to have lost importance these days in the political debate. The finding back then was, that sustainable development "contains within it two key concepts: the concept of 'needs', in particular the essential needs of the world's poor ... and the idea of the limitations imposed by the state of technology and social organization on the environment's ability to [regenerate itself]", which led to further research on Global Change. Global Change is more than just Climate Change, since our current way of living and operating industries not only alters our atmosphere at an increasing pace, but among others also the land use and living species. These developments and processes, as well as specifically the solutions towards sustainability for industry are at the core of the new SIOB study program. Section A evolves around Taking Responsible Action and considers "Responsible Consumption and Production" in accordance with the Sustainable Development Goal n°12 of the United Nations. It looks at alternative food sources for humans and livestock, discusses water management and resource efficiency in computing, and dives into alternative materials and recycling for automobiles. Section B presents Innovative Ideas in accordance with the UN Goal n°9 "Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure". The impact of 3D printing and recycling of concrete on the construction industry and of quantum computing and bitcoin on the energy sector is discussed. Trends in technology such as augmented reality, electric planes and a deep dive into smart factories and their influence on the industrial sector as well as our everyday lives are presented. Section C is dedicated to Sustainable Communities and, thus, to UN Goal n°11 "Sustainable Cities and Communities" raising awareness about practices that enable us to reduce our carbon foot print in cities and combat the already visible effects of climate change. Topics evolve around green roof technologies, vertical gardens and carbon neutral housing for greener, cooler and healthier cities. The section takes a look into smart homes and discusses the broader issue of sustainable tourism focusing on projects in Kenya.}, language = {en} } @misc{PredigerMazrekajAmadietal.2024, author = {Prediger, Elisabeth and Mazrekaj, Alicia and Amadi, Emmanuel C. and Sharma, Gaurav K. and Sackitey, Daniel N. and Abdalla, Noureldin and Bauer, Verena and Rose, Luisa M. This magazine captures part of the journey that its first ever Bachelor of Engineering students had. It summarizes their research results on future technologies and sustainability in our everyday lives. They gained insights into trends and current problems that companies, politics and the wider public face but also opportunities enabled by new discoveries and innovation. May this mark the start of a tradition allowing incoming students to dive deeper into a topic of their interest on their way of changing our world for the better. Section A considers Sustainable Business Practices and the balancing act of transforming industries and society. This section of Foot Print is dedicated to projects and companies that enable us to reduce our carbon foot print and combat the already visible effects of climate change. Section B considers Technologies of the Future and the potential of novel technologies for our society. Following the industrial revolution is the ongoing technological revolution. This section of Foot Print is dedicated to technologies that are truly having an impact on meeting climate goals, improving manufacturing practices or saving lives improving the medical sector.}, subject = {Nachhaltigkeit}, language = {en} }
